What a great find this was! We wanted a nice place to stay for Ripon Races . The Masons Arms far exceeded our expectations, set in a small village not far from the race course . The room was excellent and had a nice en suite with shower. Downstairs the pub was true country style and the food both good and reasonably priced . Everyone was very welcoming and happy to chat. If you want an idyllic place to stay then I have no hesitation in recommending The Masons Arms . We will be back soon 👍

Ordered the chicken sizzling plate with no sauce. After waiting a good 45 minutes ( was told because there was chicken in the order it took longer to cook) it came with sauce so sent it back and it was back in a few minutes. The chicken was well over cooked, the stir fry was under cooked but the rice was nice but cold by the time the sizzling plate came back. Ordered the apple and pear crumble which was lovely however my custard was served in a jug that should in my opinion be in the bin. When paying the bill said about my issues and was told it was my own fault as I didn’t want sauce with my chicken sizzling plate. The jug he did not mention. Rude young gentleman server.

We were staying local and decided to try out the masons arms after a day of exploring with our dogs. We were warmly greeted by Molly and shown to a table, and both of our dogs were allowed to accompany us and sit at the table. All of the menu items sounded great, and the menu is very well written. We ordered our food with Molly, and the food was served very promptly, and very hot, straight from the kitchen, with a bowl of water for the dogs. Both of our starters and main courses were absolutely faultless.Very well presented, and extremely tasty. We wanted to sample the desserts as well, but we were too full up from the incredible mains. We are so pleased we dined here, and would recommend to anyone in the area. Great food, great drinks, and very welcoming to both humans and dogs. Thank you to Molly and the kitchen team.We will definitely be back when next visiting the area. 5⭐

We booked here to attend a car show at Newby Hall. Parking to the rear of the property which is secluded and out the way which was perfect. Check in was swift and easy. Lovely little pub which seems to be the heart of the village. Locals were very friendly. Room had tea and coffee facilities, some juice and a cake which was a really nice touch. I have to mention the landlord. He was a really really top guy and made our stay! Will definitely return. Thanks Gary!!

We called in on the off-chance hoping for Sunday lunch. We were not disappointed. There was a table free and we were served promptly. I had a Sunday roast beef lunch and it was excellent. Beef cooked perfectly. Cauliflower cheese was excellent and it was served with veg and gravy. I would go out of my way to come here again for Sunday lunch. We all chose different meals and there was not a scrap left on any of our plates. Great job, well done.

A tad late with this review BUT important nevertheless. My daughter and son in law renewed their wedding vows in the village church on 23rd December, followed by a prearranged meal for 34 people. We held the village Tennis Club annual dinner at the Masons-a gathering of around 20 people. The menu suggestions we received were excellent-canapés followed by a choice of 3 main courses and desserts. We ordered in advance and discussed the timings-after that we left everything to the team at the Masons. The result was an outstanding evening which prompted positive responses from everyone who came. I have always been a fan of especially the Sunday lunch here-now I know they can do larger catering events too. Thank you-I’m sure next year’s will be 30 people rather than 20!

Had meals meals in the past which were very good but on this occasion we had a limited choice as the Sunday roast meats had run out, we were served chips instead of roast potatoes, limited vegetables (one cauliflower cheese floret between four of us! ). Booked to stay at The Mason Arms for two nights 11th and 12th November and wasn't disappointed. Stayed in room one, absolutely brilliant accommodation, extremely clean, bright, warm and spacious. Breakfast provided was Contentinal style, ample and in room. Tea and coffee making facilities available in room. Plenty of hot water available for showers. Ate in the pub both evenings as food was excellent. I ordered Chicken Sizzler with rice followed by Apple and Pear Crumble absolutely delicious and plentiful. My husband ordered Beef and Ale Pie, choice of chips or mash and vegetables followed by Chocolate Sundae, again amazing. Didn't get a photograph of his pie meal as he tucked into it so soon! Please note the green cabbage was from my husband's plate, he didn't want it and I love it! Please see photographs of what I managed to take to support the quality of food on offer here. Truly an asset to the beautiful village of Bishop Monkton. Compliments to the Chef and all the team at the Mason Arms they truly deserve to be successful as their hard work clearly is a credit to them. We were staying locally while cycling the Way of the Roses, but were coming in late as we'd had a mechanical issue with my bike. On the advice of our host (Jane at Mill View Barns) we called ahead to the pub to find out what time last orders were. When we ended up being further delayed, the team allowed us to call in an order before they closed the kitchen and we rushed over to meet our food. If they hadn't had done this, we would have gone to bed very hungry and grumpy. Food was tasty and generous portions. Thank you to the whole team for helping us out!

Initially I was not going to write this review as the staff at the time did try to rectify the problems, however my husband messaged the manager later in the evening with our experience and was told that we were liars (ie. I had eaten half of the meal before it was returned to the kitchen) and that we were not welcome back in the pub even for drinks. We arrived and was shown to a table by a waitress who seemed to be the only member of staff dealing with food orders for the whole of the pub and therefore was missing or forgetting things, although she did make us very welcome and fetch us a bowl of water for the dog. Orders were taken for food which took over 40 minutes to arrive. The waitress asked if we wanted any sauces etc, we answered yes,and assumed that the cutlery would arrive with the sauces. she disappeared and we then saw her taking other diners orders and had to be called over again when it was obvious that she had forgotten. The gammon meal was small but cooked ok, the meat tender and juicy but served on a cold plate so by the time the cutlery had arrived everything had cooled considerably - we did not complain about any of the above - the poor girl was running around like a scalded cat! However, the Cajun Chicken Burger in a ciabatta bun was a whole different experience (I wish I had taken photos to do the meal justice) I was presented with a wooden breadboard with a portion of fries in a separate bowl (fine) though who wants to eat of a breadboard I will never know! The bread looked like it had been left out to dry for the day and was dry and wizened. I did eat the top half of this, smothered in cajun mayo to give it some moisture. the rest of the bread was left. The chicken fillet was much larger than the bread but was overcooked and also appeared to have been left out to dry for the day as it was solid. I did break a chunk off the end and try to eat it; notice I say break as it was impossible to get my knife to cut it (a steak knife may have worked better). This chunk of chicken disintegrated as I bit into it,, it was so dry! I was ready to give up on this when the waitress reappeared and asked if everything was okay, I was about to say yes (as is the British way) but actually said No, its not okay and tapped my knife on the chicken as a demonstration. She apologized again and took the burger and half bun back to the kitchen, leaving the fries with me as I was by now, quite hungry. She returned with more apologies and said chef would prepare another which I mistakenly agreed to as after another 30 mins or so, we were no longer wanting to stay there, hubby had finished his meal a long time ago and I asked a member of the bar staff for the bill, who then tried to blame the waitress for many of the problems There were more apologies and the price of the burger and a pint of lager was removed from the bill but we had been charged for 3 pints of beer when hubby had only had 2, so this too had to be rectified before we could leave. Given the other good reviews about this place I was really surprised and saddened at our experience but would have happily sat outside whilst we were staying in the village with a pint and crisps etc. However the message back from the manager to my husband made it very clear that we were not welcome. I am expecting a 'angry' response from the manager/owner as I have seen them from him previously,. however this was our true experience and you can see from my many other reviews, this is not something I make a habit of..

However, BEWARE after receiving the bill and paying it and on our way out of the pub we were called back in and told that we hadn't paid enough. We found that this was a service charge that we didn't expect. This amounted to about 12% of the bill. Don't get me wrong - the food is good although the menu isn't very extensive. The service, however, is poor. We were there over two hours and only had two courses. Our finished mains were waiting 30 minutes to be cleared, when they were we were offered a dessert menu but no drink refills...20 minutes later we had to seek these out ourselves. Meanwhile another couple had been in, had 2 courses, paid up and left! Not only that but we were seated in the pub, surrounded by people vaping indoors, and cigarette smoke blowing in through the open front doors from the smokers stood on the doorstep - off-putting to say the least!

Due to visit this lovely pub for the third time tomorrow - great place to take family and friends when they visit the area. Comfortable seating, dogs welcome, good food from a good selection on various menus. A la carte, early bird, specials, children’s meals. Took advantage of the two main courses for £18 but could have chosen the early bird menu,2 courses £13.95. Fish and chips lovely with chunky chips and home made tartare sauce but my favourite is roast meat sandwich with chips and gravy, from the lite bite menu. Might try one of the sizzler dishes tomorrow . No need to book but would advise you do as it got very busy the two lunch times I’ve been in. Very friendly staff, nothing too much trouble.

It was a pleasure to be served good quality food by such friendly staff. The gammon steak and lamb Henry were particularly appreciated. I enjoyed my small bottle of excellent prosecco. All in all, a very enjoyable lunch.

We visited the pub a few times for a drink whilst staying in the village on a caravan rally. The Black Sheep ale was superb. On the Sunday lunchtime whilst sat outside enjoying a refreshing drink in the sunshine, we saw the staff come out with a couple of Sunday lunches, they looked so good we instantly decided to stay for lunch and we were not disappointed, it was excellent, good food, well presented and with plenty of fresh vegetables. The interior of the pub has been tastefully modernised and is well decorated. A perfect country village pub in this very pretty village.

Was really looking forward to it for my Mums birthday. First course was lovely then it all went a bit downhill. Main course was ages and they got 2 out of 6 dishes completely wrong - had to wait 20 mins to get another drink and dessert took for ever. Food was nice you just need a lot of patience and don’t order veg as you won’t get any. Birra Moretti was cheap!

Been a while since we last visited the Mason Arms ... The staff were very welcoming and the menu has a good selection of dishes which are very reasonably priced. The food was excellent as was the service. A very enjoyable evening.

Quite simply the best main meal we've had in a long time. We visited without realising the kitchen was closing but they were so kind and allowed us to order anyway. The chicken supreme is AMAZING. Delicious, full of flavour and beautifully done. We practically licked the plates clean. The staff were friendly and so welcoming. You could tell from the atmosphere this is a well loved place and we only wish we could have a place like it at home! It's also incredibly good value! We've paid more for meals that didn't even come close in quality and happily paid more than they asked.

...Abbey to Harrogate and fancied lunch. What a pretty village! What a great pub! 3 real ales on offer, and a really nice menu. All four of us gave our food 8/10 we all had sandwiches: a crayfish prawn & avocado, a fish butty and 2x steak with caramelised onion & horseradish. Each was accompanied by a serving of skinny fries. Service very friendly, prices reasonable & WiFi available. We shall come here again! Thanks Gary!

Ate here whilst staying on a caravan site in the village. Both my wife and I had the fish and chips which were very good - they did serve a home made tartar sauce, but that lacked a bit taste. However, the rest of the food was well cooked, and good quality. The pub serves 3 beers, black sheep, theakstons and a hambleton ale, but apparently these don't seem to change - bit of a shame really as there are lots of great craft/micro breweries in Yorkshire. Staff are pleasant and would happily eat there again
