We visited The Tavern for an evening meal for a large group. The staff were amazing with such a big order and were very friendly and accommodating. They were very dog friendly and had some really good gluten free options (steak pie to name one which was delicious). Due to the large table and our food taking a bit longer than the average order, (understandably with a table of 15) we were given Prosecco on the house for the group to celebrate a members birthday which was an extra special touch that was much appreciated. A great atmosphere and we highly recommend!

Lovely pub, cosy and homely, would be nice to sit and drink in however, we came for food as a family and would never come again. Pizza was a pizza we buy from supermarket at home for a few quid, goodfellas I think. Lasagne had absolutely no sauce on and the mince was pale, probably the worst lasagne I’ve ever had. Cheesy home cooked chips were really nice. We didn’t ask for a refund or complain, we just paid and left and wouldn’t return. Gutted as it’s a nice pub to sit in and everyone is friendly. Have to rate it 1 star purely because of the food, we wanted to come out for a nice family meal but left feeling gutted.

Went here today for Sunday lunch. Absolutely shocking. 3 of us are vegetarians and ordered the vegetarian option- Lasagne. After about an hour our meals were served. However 2 of the vegetarians noticed that the meat in the lasagne may not have been quorn. We asked the waitress and she said that it was meat!!!! We said that we did notwant a replacement meal. Also one of the group had asked for extra roast potatoes - not served with the main meal, the waitress said that they would be 10 minutes - never served. The yorkshire puddings served with the Sunday roast were still frozen. To top it all we were charged for drinks that had already been paid for. All in all a terrible experience - never to be repeated. All this while the landlady sat at the side of the bar drinking. Not one sincere apology.

I went for a Sunday lunch here with my parents today and am shocked at the quality of the food and service offered. Especially compared to some of the great alternatives nearby. It took an age to get seated after being passed between different staff, and when we finally got a table, the service there didn't pick up at all. In terms of the menu, the single vegetarian option was lack luster. My parents both ordered a meat dinner and I was given a meat free lasagne (I asked to substitute the garlic bread with chips and was given two (literally, just two) roast potatoes as an alternative... Something the waitress found funny when I queried it. My parents comments about their meat dishes were summarised with 'wasnt great, but I ate it because I was hungry'. They were not impressed with either the meat or vegetables. Anyways, I won't be returning to The Tavern, and I certainly wouldn't recommend it (to either carnivores or veggies). I stopped at McDoanlds on the way home given our meal there was so poor. Next time I'll stick to the Elephant and Castle, or one of the other pubs around.

Just had one of the best Sunday dinners, nearly as good as mine lol, Lovely little place, portion sizes are huge, your plate is nearly full then they bring out the vegetables and the biggest jug of gravy you've ever seen, food stays hot too as the plates are piping hot. If you live close by, you got to give it a try, we will be back.

Worse Sunday dinner I have ever had. Wouldn’t feed the dog it! No atmosphere, staff stomping around making you feel an inconvenience to them, no one came to take the order had to ask, after been sat for 20m when the place was dead. The girl serving needs extensive training in customer service honestly shocking no people skills whatsoever. I wouldn’t normally write a review but combining both the poor food and service I felt the need to, paying for such shoddy service and food is very disheartening. Will not return.

For the half term we decided to explore the countryside of South Yorkshire, we have a thing for true traditional raw outdoor trips, if we can call them that XD anyway, we have a motorhome and that makes our trips always unique, sometimes it’s only hard to park and stay for the night in a... legal way. So, long story short, the tavern allowed us to stay in their car park for free, and also let us fill our deposit with drinkable water! Thank you for this!! Disregarding this kindness, the tavern itself is cozy and the staff is cheerful and friendly, personally loved the decoration! We didn’t ate at the tavern this time, but the casque conditioned ales are both very good, specially the lighter one! We recommend if you are around Barnsley!!!

Visited in a large group pre booked for a Sunday for birthday meals out. Sunday dinner took around 35-45 minutes to actually come after ordered. When came a “child’s portion” for one of the girls was one roast potato, one small Yorkshire pudding and half of a chicken breast. That was it! No mash or anything. Plenty of vegetables and gravy provided shame the dinner was not too good, meat very dry and mash lumpy. Roast potatoes were very nice though! Staff seemed almost annoyed we were there seeming to have attitude entire time we were there or asking for anything. I asked for some sauce (which there was a pot containing all different sachets on the table but not the one I wanted) she came back and put it in the pot saying “the sauces are in here if you would have had a look” Like I did and that’s why I asked as there was not any of the one I wanted. Real shame this place used to be a lot better.

I used to be a regular of the Tavern and was initially very impressed with the refurb. The food was usual pub selection and cooked generally well, with most dishes coming within a few minutes. Food was priced okay but not necessarily competitively. The thing that left a bad taste in the mouth was when a family member sat on a chair with something upon it - blood. Judging from the location on the chair it looked like a previous female guest had an accident. Our family member left understandably upset to go and change as her clothes were ruined. We advised the staff and did not even have an apologetic look, let alone an apology for the situation. The chair was removed without a word and nothing more said. I appreciate that they may not have been aware and embarrassed when discretely advised but the general response left a bad taste in our mouth. Given the existence of a lot of good competition in Elsecar nearby, we won't be rushing back.

Now under new ownership the pub has been refurbished and given a new lease of life. These guys know the area and the history of the place and the new decor reflects this perfectly. There's a good range of beers/lagers available and the bar meals are perfect if you want a bite to eat with your drinks. There's regular live music - either played inside or outside on the custom-built stage to the rear of the pub - and overall a really nice atmosphere. Great to see it buzzing again!

Really disappointed came here for mother’s day with mum who had previously worked here for years. Pub looks fab shame about the food can honestly say one of the worst carverys we have ever had ,meat sparse and dry frozen Yorkshire puds daughter asked for another one as she didn’t like the veg to be told no you can only have one potatoes and veg either massively over cooked or stood too long as mush. Such a shame as high hopes with it being local but would not eat again or recommend no one asked if everything was ok I have a feeling they know the answer if other diners comments where to go by I have never complained before but felt I had to tell the staff on the way out who apologised and said he would pass our comments on.

We regularly visit the pub in couples. Love what they have done with the place. Lovely staff great bear. Love the log fire. But the food is a let down I'm afraid. A few of us had pie chips and peas. They say home made chips. More like frozen. The pie was a small square with little meat. The cost was£ 9.95per meal. £5 to much for what we were served. Other couples had chip butties.. The breadcakes were dry cheap ones. With a few chips on. Nearly £4.not worth it. But a great pub

I used this pub for a club social event with drinks before and after a club AGM meeting and Sunday carvery meal. The lunch was very mediocre with dried up meat portions and a poor choice of vegetables. The pub management were asked to ensure that a good selection of beer was available as there are many enthusiastic beer monsters in our ranks. However: on arrival it was clear that the message had not been clearly received as the real ales on offer were basically 2 versions of the same thing ie pale ales. This was mentioned by myself to the bar staff. In this conversation I asked who chose the breed on offer. I was informed that it was in fact the lady that I was speaking to. I then asked, if in fact she herself drank beer and it turned out she did not. I owened my own pub many years ago and I made it my priority to be familiar with all the products I offered in my pub, which should be a priority of all similar business managers. It is clear that this is not the case at this establishment.

This place was once a popular destination until it closed in Spring having lost its way as a country pub. After being closed for many months it has recently been taken over by local people. In just a few short weeks it has been restored back to a cosy and charming country pub, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The old chintzy interior has been replaced by light wood and lots of quirky fittings which reflect the area’s mining and rural history. Lovely roaring fire, plenty of comfy seating and a very welcoming ambience. Upon speaking to the staff it seems that great efforts have been taken to get it open as a pub for now - with meals to follow at the end of January. I hope when the food arrives it will be unpretentious and hearty pub fare with gravy not ‘Jus’ and custard not ‘milk foam’. The new management team seem to have captured what people want from a country pub - Warm welcome and comfortable atmosphere. It only reopened on Saturday 1st December after weeks of intense activity. I can say as a local - welcome back, you’ve been missed.

Attended a sit down meal for 25 for my dad’s 60th birthday celebrations on Friday 9th Feb. I booked a month in advance and pre ordered all the meals. Communication with the manager was excellent and he accomodated all of our special dietary requirements. On arrival the staff were warm and welcoming and the room was decorated to a high standard of which we were not required to pay any additional surcharge for. I have seen earlier comments about the temperature however I found the room to be comfortable. Although this was planned as a sit down meal the tavern supplied background music of our choice and appropriate lighting that made it feel more like a celebration again all free of charge and a fantastic addition to the “party”. The food was served promptly by very attentive wait staff and was to a very high standard the pie was especially delicious. After our meal we did not feel rushed to leave and instead the staff asked if we would like the volume of the music increasing to create more of a party atmosphere which we greatfully received. Overall a fantastic night made even better by the gift from the management of a bottle of prosecco for the birthday boy. I have eaten here on previous occasions and will definitely be going again. Would strongly recomend for any intimate larger group gatherings. Well done The Tavern and will see you again soon!!!

We also had a discounted bottle of wine after paying full price for the first which was well received by all. A good eating experience and will return in the near future

I went to the tavern with friends to try out the new menu. On first appearance a sign outside said closed for food and drink which it wasn’t. The waitress was quite nice and seated us. The pub was cold and had a dog and children running around. The food was nice but I think if you are doing fine dining then maybe the atmosphere should be the same. No children and dogs running around and put the heating on. I would have enjoyed a coffee after my meal to warm me up but was told the machine had broken. No offer of instant instead. Shame as the food was nice just everything else so wrong

Having living very local we Have been to the tavern twice now both times in December. As like many people often do I searched for the menu online - the Facebook page is pretty inactive which I think is poor in today's climate, I choose so many places to go and eat purely on looking on their Facebook page and pictures of their food and menus etc. Anyway, I managed to find their website and picked out something I would like so I was a little disappointed when the menu was different when we got there. I still managed to pick something relatively similar which was the pan fried chicken with lentils. On the website it was advertised with Mushrooms and red wine jus which it didn't have and I think it was missing some kind of sauce or seasoning as I found it a little bland unfortunately. My husband had the belly pork which he thought was very tasty but it was mostly just fat (I know belly pork is a very fatty cut but their was hardly any meat on this what so ever) my daughter had a kids meal which she is only three and everything else was with chips which she doesn't eat so chose the macaroni cheese which is literally all it was. I don't mind ordering a kids macaroni cheese but when it's literally like a Heinz tin of macaroni cheese and it's the same price as homemade chicken nuggets or fish fingers and chips it's a bit on the expensive side.

Called in a few nights ago for a meal now that the painting has been completed on the outside. Very pleased to see the pub has been given a really good clean and refresh without taking the 'village pub restaurant' feeling away. New carpets and a smarten up is just what was wanted. Now a new menu with lots of old favourites and some new tastes too. Being a bit of a traditionalist I just had the Haddock and home made chips and my better half had the home made pie. Both excellent with the single issue that the portions were too big - so we both left some chips! Nice pint too, and it looks like we might be getting our local back to what it should be. I was so impressed, I'm booking for about 30 for our local Scuba Club for the Christmas 'do'.

Mains we had sea bass, honey glazed belly pork, hake, steak and ale pie and braised lamb shank. The food was beautiful, couldn’t fault it at all. Thought we would give the new management & chef a run for their money & boy did they deliver. The food was fantastic 'off the chart' for this area. I had the seafood risotto with hake & my wife had seafood linguni, both cooked to perfection. The attention to detail was second to none with two beautifully presented dishes (sweet pea shoots to garnish). Having chatted to the chef I get the feeling things are going to be different & varied to what you would otherwise find locally, he seems very keen to provide seasonal foods & more importantly listen to customers feedback regarding fine tuning his fine dining ideas. Thank goodness The Tavern has finally got the new drive it has been so lacking for many years. We have visited this pub and the others in the same chain several times. It has changed hands since the last time we visited. The staff are friendly and helpful but the menu has changed. They no longer do the mixed grill which is a popular dish and the steak now comes on a hot stone so is cooking it's self, a bit awkward to eat your meal with a hot stone stuck in the middle of your plate. The portions are still fairly plentiful. There was a party upstairs who were gypsies and the children kept running round the pub and round the tables so was a bit off putting while eating our meal despite the staff repeatably asking them not to.

Our group visited the Lundhill Tavern for Sunday lunch. Most of the meals were ok, not bad but nothing special. However one of our party, a woman in her 80s, asked for a steak. She was told that it would come with a hot stone and she had to cook it herself. She naturally felt very nervous about this and we asked for a normal steak, cooked for her. They refused, saying they weren't allowed to do that! Apparently the Lundhill Tavern has been taken over by a chain who have dropped the Lundhill from the name (making it much less interesting IMO) and dictating strictly what the staff can and can't do. Cooking steak apparently is on the forbidden list. Very disappointing.

The service on the other hand was not as good, a meal was missed yet it was apparently the tables responsibility to make sure staff had collected all orders; another groups drinks had been added to our tables and then the staff member behind the bar was rather abrupt and rude. There was a large party in but this should not detract from bar/restaurant customers. The service was first class and l suppose when they asked us if all was ok we should have made the comments face to face however, didn't feel they could have corrected the issues without putting our lunch in the microwave - not something l would have wanted.

Visited on a Friday evening, was very quiet, service quick and efficient. I nearly always try a burger when eating out, so ordered one and it didn't disappoint. Very thick meat, large bacon slice and decent chips.Had the Blond Witch ale which was nice, the dessert I chose was not great, but acceptable fare.Worth a try.

I came for a meal on the 19th with my family and while there a vintage tea party was taking place. I had a look at what was available, and was blown away by what the management team and staff had created they really have out done themselves this time. Lovely food at grer prices as always

Visited the Lundhill tavern a couple of months ago and visited again last night! The changes are noticeable and the service has improved massively, all staff was welcoming as we arrived for a table of 6 with out booking although the pub was quite busy, the meals came out in good timing and was the best pub meals we have ever had! I would definitely recommend

This pub was recommended for both food & drink so we decided to call in & try it out. Sadly we didn't get beyond having a drink before realising this was a huge mistake. We were served our drinks by a guy who I can only describe as unbelievably rude & ill mannered!! I got the impression he was either the landlord or manager (wore black nail varnish) however he demonstrated neither managerial nor any other form of social skills whatsoever. Whilst hastily, & uncomfortably finishing our drinks we witnessed his bad attitude towards the other customers present too. I would definitely not recommend nor return to this place -this guy is desperately in need of a customer care course.......or career change!!!

Went here again with some friends on Saturday night. We ordered our meals which came out fairly quickly to say there was 6 of us and the pub was quite busy. 2 people had the fish which was massive and very fresh. 2 had the steak pie which was nice, the meat was very tender but the flaky pastry was a bit hard to cut would be nice with home made shortcrust instead. All our meals were off the 2 for £14 menu which were tasty and plentiful. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We will defiantly be returning.

About thirty years ago I lived on Lundhill road and the Tavern was my Local and I also played football for them every Sunday.I then moved to Darfield and I started to use the Longbow until it closed down.In December 2016 four of us decide to try the Tavern for a meal.I booked a table for Saturday evening. The experience was way above our expectations. The two female staff that were serving were excellent, very polite and friendly, two of the best I have ever seen. The food was brilliant and cooked to perfection. All in all our experience was first class. We will definitely be returning in the very near future.

Wife and I both had lasagne. It was OK nothing special. Had better had worse. Lovely home made chips with salad portion could have been better. It was reasonably priced though. Lemon meringue was a bit bland, came across as a frozen desert no crisp to the meringue and soft pastry no zing to the lemon. Wife said the same of her chocolate brownie nothing special. Atmosphere good lovely place staff good too.

I organised a wake for my Grandmas funeral this week at Lundhill Tavern because it was a pub that she knew and meant something to her. There's a number of reasonably priced choices for buffet and hot meal menus and the buffet we chose was fresh with very tasty homemade chips and cakes. The staff decorated the tables with some nice flowers and let us put on a playlist of my grandmas favourite music. Everything was served promptly and the barman was attentive and friendly. We are all very thankful of helping us to give my grandma the send off she deserved.

Meals nice as usual .. 1 hrs wait for starters... another hrs wait for mains.. didn't bother with pudding .. too late. 12 of us booked in for 7pm after 10 pm when we left...ran out of some things ... not a great amount on plates ...we ended up not being charged for all of our starters... staff very & friendly & apologetic ... but doesn't make up for disappointment .... we was one of first for a meal & one of last to get our meal. Serving all the walkins first. Very disappointed..... we go to tavern for every celebration we have always 12 of us ... Will be seriously thinking of if we return.. or was it just a bad night ??? 12 regular meals is a lot of custom to loose... !!!!! We have also hired upstairs room for celebrations .. no problem. !!!

As a regular in this local pub I feel I should offer a regular, honest review. Well, tonight's food has surpassed everything else! 3 main courses and every one was superb. Steak cooked medium rare as requested and every morsel was devoured. Steak pie and fish and chips were delicious. Great food at affordable prices, looking forward to watching the football and having a few drinks and good food!!

Found this pub open on bank holiday Monday.... Serving a wide range of food at reasonable prices. Me and my fiancé both had starters which were both excellent, then we had mains which were good portions and equally tasty. Unfortunately it wasn't sunny, if it had been we would have sat outside in the beer garden, were there is plenty of seating. Staff were great, service was friendly. We will defiantly return.

First visit today, what a delightful place. Had tea which were the best burgers I've had in a long time, very nicely presented. A good well kept cask ale from Acorn Brewery. The staff were attentive and very welcoming, couldn't do enough for us, drinks ordered at bar and brought to table leaving us to chill out in the oldy worldy style surroundings. If you've never been it's well worth a visit, not sure on how busy they get but maybe check if booking is required before a visit if your planning on eating. Will be visiting again;)

Having used this pub frequently over the past 4 years I have got to say how disappointed we were with our last visit when the food was not up to the usual high standard and staff appeared stressed out and at one point a senior member of staff was barking orders to a junior member who appeared to get upset. At this point everyone seemed to disappear upstairs which left the bar unattended for 10 minutes so no one could get a drink ! We witnessed people leaving having waited too long for their food

Dry as cardboard and about the same taste, on the upside I didn't get gravy down my shirt, because there wasn't any. 4 meals ordered, no sauces, gravy to accompany bland food. We have been 3 times and can't see us coming back, a pity because the place is quite nice and the staff are great.

Well it was an experience. The bloke running the place gave an aura of discomfort with a huge lack of understanding of the English language. I felt sorry for him that the proprietor had left someone in charge that was unable to understand an order. Two customers ended up walking out because they became too frustrated after they had to write down the order and then have guy just staring at them but into the void. I waited as I was simply filling time anyway. Wish I hadn't, the fish was awful, just meh slimy and gross. Not had fish this bad in a long time. Won't be going there again. Also whilst I was there an angry customer came in complaining that he hadn't answered the phone to take orders. The phone was going alot and he just stared at it. From what I gathered, because of his limitations of the language, he ignores the orders.
