Hare and Hounds in Barnsley

First visit for lunch here on 31/10/24 with my husband & cousin. The Hare & Hounds has a very traditional pub feel to it, lovely friendly service from the 2 members of staff that served us. We ordered scampi, a baked potato with cheese & beans + bangers & mash, we also had a couple of lattes & a cappuccino. Food was lovely as was the coffee, piping hot & full of flavour, unfortunately we were far too full for dessert as the mains portions were decent. Hopefully we'll get to try dessert another time as we'll definitely be back!

Ordered creamy garlic mushroom starter, which wasn't bad however there was no garlic in it at all, so it was basically creamy mushrooms. Ordered hunters chicken main which again wasn't bad but wasn't the best. Ordered a peppercorn sauce to go with my chips which does state on the menu that all sauces have mushrooms, which is fine. But what i didn't expect is pieces of red pepper in the peppercorn sauce, this wasn't stated on the menu. Anytime I've ordered peppercorn sauce it comes plain creamy sauce with just the peppercorn. They have tried to make it more fancy but ultimately destroyed it, didn't even taste like peppercorn either. Also tried the Diane sauce which tasted vinegary. A family member ordered a medium-well steak and it came out really well done when they mentioned it they was told they had took the wrong steak which wasn't the case. Either way nothing was done to rectify this and my family member couldn't eat the steak. The majority of the food was left and At the end of the night 2 of my family members had been sick, with me and my partner having an upset stomach and feeling like we were going to throw up. Would never come here again.

Had a lovely lunchen with my wife and an old friend. Sizzlers and stake and ale pie were cooked and presented very, and tasted lovely, nothing left on the plate. A nice pint of Jonh smith's served at the bar.

Family meal for 9. Good food and great service. Recommended.

There were a group of us went to eat, all apart from my plate looked really nice. Took everybody ages to eat with loads on plate but not mine. Tasted nice but portions were small, could've been better presented and even though the 'chips' were nice they were quite soggy.

Been coming here most Sundays and through week on odd occasion.. food is perfect, staff are so friendly and atmosphere lovely.. never had a bad meal and food is always piping hot.. definitely worth a visit …

Went for my Mum’s 80th birthday. There were 21 of us so I would have expected some delay in service, I was wrong. It was like a military operation. Fantastic food (portions were large) and fabulous service. Can not recommend it enough! My only disappointment was the reform uk poster, we all have our opinions, please take it down, let’s not advertise racism and bigotry !!

The food was lovely, we didn't have to wait long,the girls were all friendly and on hand.

We went here for a Father's Day meal for 17. Everything was perfect. Food was beautiful great value for money. Service wax excellent and great atmosphere.

Decided to eat here after recommendations from work colleagues. Haven’t been for years but decided to try it out again. The pub itself hasn’t changed much and still remains a traditional style pub. Staff were friendly, good choice of typical pub food. Good choice of specials too. Bit of a wait for food but that is a good thing as it all seemed cooked from fresh and we all enjoyed our meals. Very generous portions, home made chips, nice side salad with the mains. Our server was great and almost seemed a little surprised to receive a tip! Pub is a little noisy at times but adds to a nice atmosphere. I would definitely recommend this pub.

We attended a late Sunday afternoon for a family birthday celebration. We rang in advance to book and confirm menu options. We were told specifically that the Sunday lunch menu plus other alternatives would be available. However, once we were shown to our table later that day, we noticed there was only a Sunday lunch menu available. We queried this and were told in fact that there was ONLY Sunday lunch available! Only 2 of our 8 party members wanted the Sunday lunch, which was why we had rang to confirm in the first place. The lady who served us was quite abrupt, and clearly had no customer skills or interest. ' that's all we do and that's that'. I noticed the staff generally appeared un professional and miserable, particularly compared to a few weeks ago in April when we also went as party of 8 and the staff working seemed most helpful. Regrettably, we all had Sunday lunch, which was okish, but Chicken was overcooked, and they had run out of Pork and Turkey! It was disappointing considering it was a special occasion, and the lack of enthusiasm from the staff who served us means we probably won't be returning again!

Food was lovely and hot, but the roast potatoes looked and tasted horrible. But then we only had ONE large one.

Absolutely amazing food well cooked , quality ingredients. The staff were fantastic i really cant fault the place. 10/10

First time visiting this pub, pub was quiet, but food and service was absolutely amazing, lots of choices, home cooked, I’m vegan and it’s hard to find places to eat in Barnsley, but to find vegan option and dog friendly too is almost impossible, party of four and 2 dogs, we all loved this place and we’ll be back to try rest of menu very soon. Would 100% recommend

13 of us went for dinner Saturday afternoon, the food was gorgeous and could believe how cheap it was, when I paid the bill.

Nice place, nice food, nice drinks. We arrived at 8.00pm which seemed to be late for the staff. Home made French Fries !

When we got there it was really busy in the bar area and this is where our table was booked. It was too hectic for us to eat there. A member of staff could see we weren’t happy with the table so she tried her best to move us. After a while we got moved into the restaurant part which was much better. The 2 members of staff were brilliant. The food was fantastic again. So what started off a bit of a disaster turned out brilliant. Thank you to Lizzie and Katie who helped us have a great night.

Stopped off on a trip to Southampton, from Newcastle. We called 1 hr away & booked a table for 2. Lovely, friendly staff & friendly atmosphere, We both had a roast beef Sunday lunch - this was really good & beef was cooked well, with delicious gravy. We then had a desert each. There is an option for 1,2 or 3 courses. All reasonably priced. If we’re ever passing again we would definitely stop off.

Sunday lunch with a family of 8 people and one child. We are returning customers but not as good as previously experienced. It was quite a late booking after four so not all meats available. Just beef turkey and chicken. Starter’s were pretty good but main course wasn’t as good. No homemade Yorkshire pudding Veg was very nice but additional gravy came to the table straight from the fridge Didn’t realise until poured over food. Offered to microwave the meal to reheat it but was spoiled. Had to ask for mashed potato as it wasn’t brought out immediately. Overall not our best experience as they were very busy and appeared short staffed. We will try again as previous visits were good. Maybe just an off day.

Great food always at the Hare and Hounds, sometimes you have to wait but this is the price of having your meal hot and fresh. We often visit on a Friday evening and have never been disappointed. Tried the Sausage, Liver and Veg last time and it was delicious. The young waiter was obvs rushed off his feet but he did an excellent job. Have had the burgers previously served with some banging onion rings and chips. Would definately recommend.

The meal was ok taste wise the chips were pale and boring probably microwaved chips/wedges overpriced and I only had kids meal

Quiet local pub. Nice food and good choice of drinks. Drinks a bit pricey but so are all the pubs in hoyland common.

This pub is a little gem cosy with really good food. It's got it's own carpark. All on the ground floor. Clean toilets, a good pint everyone is pleasant. Some seating outside the front.well worth calling in.

Lovely home cooked food, the pie is amazing! We eat here every week now, by far the best around.

We were in the area last Saturday and called in here by chance. The food was some of the best I've ever had in a pub. Staff were friendly and down to earth.

We all enjoyed our lunch. It was reasonably priced and of a very good standard. The fish was delicious and perfectly cooked. The waiting staff went above and beyond to make sure everything was to our liking and she was very friendly. We have been here several times for lunch and will no doubt return in the future.

Upon arrival was greeted by friendly staff the food was well prepared and tasty the menu is a varied selection of dishes.very well priced to suit your pocket would recommend a visit but book early as this is a popular choice of eaterie.

Good value pub food if you fancy a night off from cooking during the week. Portions are less than before which is disappointing as the prices have increased but that's the same everywhere at the moment.

Our first visit and it was very friendly with a decent Sunday lunch. What more do you want

We have been several times and have always found the service and food to be a good standard. This time it was Sunday lunchtime. I'm more than happy to recommend this place to others to try.

Went as a Valentines day treat for the wife. Meals were very good and tasty. Was busy so a bit of a wait but in no rush so not an issue. Would return as it delivered an enjoyable experience at a reasonable price as we took advantage of the over 60's 2 course deal.

Very nice family run Pub, good food good beers great atmosphere.

The food here is brilliant. Portion size compared to price is also great value for money. I think sitting in the bar area is nice and cosy rather than the restaurant if there is only a few of you. Always great service too.

We went here for my aunt's 80th birthday a few weeks ago and while we was there we noticed the Christmas fare menu so we went back the following week for that. The food is great here and awesome service from the staff and they dealt with a large group of us quite easily on top of rest of bar been busy too.

What a super Christmas Meal with my team from work..Lovely Starter of Garlic creamed mushrooms on toast, Turkey, all the trimmings plus a mountain of fresh Vegetables and lashings of gravy! Happy efficient staff and environment...Thank you it was gorgeous

Popped in after a couple of days in Blackpool, very accommodating as we had dogs with us. Food was amazing we had steak and ale pie, food was very hot. Would definitely come here again and only 5 mins off the motorway. Well done everyone you have a great place here

Ordered chicken stuffed with brie it was Luke warm,dry cheese was solid and hardly any cheese inside. Chips were hot and veg was ok but came out about 4 mins after the main. Steak and ale pie was nice. Ordered a Jam sponge to be told, don't know why they advertise it as we don't sell it!?! Didn't say anything in the night as it with a lot of other people and it just wasn't with it but at least we know where not to go back to

We booked a table for 12 and ordered a variety of meals. The staff were polite and attentive. All the food was hot, plentiful and tasty. Prices as good as can be expected for decent food. A very enjoyable evening would highly recommend.

Nice little welcoming place, although some of the furniture has seen better days. The food was ok but way too big portion sizes so a lot is wasted unless you have a really big appetite. Because the portions are so big it is split over several plates and so you are waiting while they bring one plate at a time.

Absolutely delicious food, definitely some of the best pub food I have had in ages. Friendly and attentive staff and honestly can't complain about the food at all. The decor could use an update but it was fine but the toilets really let it down, they obviously haven't been refurbished in years. Definitely worth a visit for the food.

We rang up before hand to ask what food would be available as there is no option to look online before. The lady who answered found it too difficult to read off the items on the specials board and was particularly unhelpful. When we arrived the staff were rude and service was poor. When the food arrived, I found a hair underneath the garlic bread. We asked for tea afterwards and were served our drinks in dirty and chiped cups. At 9, we were asked if we wanted the bill as we were the last ones in there and they clearly wanted us to leave.
