Hare and Hounds in Barnsley

When we got there it was really busy in the bar area and this is where our table was booked. It was too hectic for us to eat there. A member of staff could see we weren’t happy with the table so she tried her best to move us. After a while we got moved into the restaurant part which was much better. The 2 members of staff were brilliant. The food was fantastic again. So what started off a bit of a disaster turned out brilliant. Thank you to Lizzie and Katie who helped us have a great night.

Stopped off on a trip to Southampton, from Newcastle. We called 1 hr away & booked a table for 2. Lovely, friendly staff & friendly atmosphere, We both had a roast beef Sunday lunch - this was really good & beef was cooked well, with delicious gravy. We then had a desert each. There is an option for 1,2 or 3 courses. All reasonably priced. If we’re ever passing again we would definitely stop off.

Sunday lunch with a family of 8 people and one child. We are returning customers but not as good as previously experienced. It was quite a late booking after four so not all meats available. Just beef turkey and chicken. Starter’s were pretty good but main course wasn’t as good. No homemade Yorkshire pudding Veg was very nice but additional gravy came to the table straight from the fridge Didn’t realise until poured over food. Offered to microwave the meal to reheat it but was spoiled. Had to ask for mashed potato as it wasn’t brought out immediately. Overall not our best experience as they were very busy and appeared short staffed. We will try again as previous visits were good. Maybe just an off day.

Went as a Valentines day treat for the wife. Meals were very good and tasty. Was busy so a bit of a wait but in no rush so not an issue. Would return as it delivered an enjoyable experience at a reasonable price as we took advantage of the over 60's 2 course deal.

Very accommodating as we had 2 dogs with us. Steak and ale pie was amazing and very hot. Only 5 mins from M1 will be back would highly recommend

Absolutely delicious food, definitely some of the best pub food I have had in ages. Friendly and attentive staff and honestly can't complain about the food at all. The decor could use an update but it was fine but the toilets really let it down, they obviously haven't been refurbished in years. Definitely worth a visit for the food.

We rang up before hand to ask what food would be available as there is no option to look online before. The lady who answered found it too difficult to read off the items on the specials board and was particularly unhelpful. When we arrived the staff were rude and service was poor. When the food arrived, I found a hair underneath the garlic bread. We asked for tea afterwards and were served our drinks in dirty and chiped cups. At 9, we were asked if we wanted the bill as we were the last ones in there and they clearly wanted us to leave.

Stunningly great food at a friend locals pub - even on Mother's Day they squeezed us in. Just of the M1 - definitely look to remember

Stopped in here as passing after a visit to the local area, was quite busy but the friendly landlord seated us straight away. The Sunday lunch menu had plenty to choose from, set price for one, two or three course. I had the beef and hubby had the honey glazed ham both came with a Yorkshire pudding and a roast potato, the veg came separate to share. Very tasty and fresh, plenty for two and felt full afterwards but managed to find room for a sticky toffee pudding and custard. Overall a lovely Sunday lunch, far better than any carvery and will definitely call in again.

My parents used to come here on the regular but haven't been for a while since COVID. Both of them are vegetarian and, previously, had really enjoyed their veggie options. Last night however, the Hare and Hound really let themselves down. My parent placed their order with waiting staff at 7:45, an hour later they had to ask where there food was. As it turns out the order had either not gone through to the kitchen or the kitchen had forgot. The waitress returned looking panicked saying that unfortunately there was a delay as it was busy, except that it hadn't been since we had arrived. Just after 8pm their meals arrived, upon tasting his Chilli my dad found that it had been made with Beef!!! Disgusted doesn't cover it, you simply cannot be making mistakes like that! Just to top it off the lasagna that arrived my mum had evidently been sat on the pass for quite sometime, the top was dry and crusty. The young waitress working that night was evidently trying her best, she was left to deal with this by herself and we appreciate her efforts. That being said, they need to realise if that was an allergen they would have been in a world of trouble.

My wife and I attended here today with our friends and had a gorgeous Sunday Lunch. We both had the Prawn Cocktail and the Roast Beef and all the food was excellent. The vegetables were lovely, especially the Cauliflower Cheese. It all came with a delicious Yorkshire Pudding and a good old fashioned Roast Potato. The Staff here are really nice, friendly and cheerful. The whole place has a great feel to it and I can't wait to come back.

Our first meal here since March. Pre covid. It was a fantastic lunch, couldn't fault anything, the food was lovely, good service and very safe feeling.

Would not recommend the staff were rude and the food wasn't cooked properly or how stated on the menu

This was our second visit for Sunday lunch and for the second time it was very good. We were a group of 20 people and we were all extremely well fed with lovely food and great service. We will be back again soon.

Went to Hare and Hounds on new years eve noon time and had gammon and my partner had Christmas roast. Both meals were very good and really good value for money as we were able to have the over 60s meal. The only down side was that we had to wait so long for the meals and then after ordering a desert waited another 20 minutes. Can understand not having enough staff on that afternoon but it spoilt the visit slightly. Would definitely go again when I would hope there would be quicker service.

Visited with friends for a birthday celebration. Lovely atmosphere, obviously popular as the place slowly filled up from late morning.

Visited today with my mum and sisters for Christmas Lunch. The food was plentiful and lovely. Even though it was busy we were not rushed and the staff were lovely.

Met up with old friends for meal, didn't opt for Christmas fayre but off menu. We had pensioners meal, 2 courses for £8-45. Both courses were beautiful served quickly by friendly helpful staff. The place is lovely and clean, well decorated. Will definitely go back soon

Great value visit at this pub. We’ve been a few times previously and were overdue a date night so came here on a Friday night. I rung up just before we set off to check we had a table. Got seated right away. There’s an extensive bar with plenty of gin choices and really well priced too. We both ordered mushrooms to start and my other half was desperate for a mixed grill. It wasn’t on the menu but the lady serving us was lovely and checked if it was possible and cooked it for him. Both portions were really generous and well worth the money! I had chicken wrapped in bacon with potatoes and veg and the attached photo is my other half’s mixed grill portion. He ate most of it. The uneaten meat got bagged up and we took it home. I’m sure we will be back soon!

Why try anywhere else if you’re looking for great food with great service.The steak pie is absolute amazing, but the food choice doesn’t stop there....every meal will not disappoint.The meal size is very good, the taste is even better! A meal that you will be wanting more of but you’ll struggle to cope with much more than what is dished up on your plate. Great little local pub!

The portion size, taste and price of food here is great. Drinks are pricey but what pub isn't pricey for drinks these days. Highly recommended.

Visited here a couple of times for both for food and drinks. Cosy little pub with no nonsense pub grub. Meals are reasonably priced with generous portions and staff were very attentive. Will definitely be back.

We live local and have been to the hare and hounds on several occasions over the years for food, all of which have been faultless, today was no exception it was beautiful!! there was a bit of a wait on as it was packed, it’s ok, I’m in a rush the rest of the week so a relaxing family dinner on a Sunday is fine, just had a drink while we waited, food hot and fresh, and delicious. Will be back again.

Don’t come here often but yet to have a decent meal here. Today I had the trout which was very overcooked and swimming in butter, literally. Salty butter with capers and very sweet care used onions and balsamic drizzle. Very strange, did not work at all. Didn’t finish and filled up ok vegetables. Would never suggest this place I’m afraid.

Enjoyed two excellent meals here on consecutive evenings. Generous portions and a good choice on the menu, plus interesting specials menu. Friendly staff. Lovely atmosphere. Highly recommend it.

Enjoyed our meals all food was nicely presented an well cooked apart from the tasteless frozen chips totally let the meals down unfortunately.

Thankyou once again for an exceptional meal, our friend was over from France, so I booked the Hare and hounds for our Sunday ttime meal, and as always they didn't let me down most of us had the roast and everyone said how much they had enjoyed it, we also had desserts all spot on. Highly recommend.

Being Father’s Day we were struggling to find somewhere to book.

We had another first class meal lastthursday at the hare and hounds We hadn't booked but the girls found us a table which had plenty of room and access round it was very easy as my wife has some mobility problems the meal was superb and cooked to perfection There was plenty of it in fact maybe too much for us The girls were very curious We found all the staff very friendly and helpful We will certainly be going back very soon The menu is quite extensive

My hubby & I ate here one busy Saturday tea time. We had reserved a table in the lovely dining room & we were seated immediately.

Lovely large seating area, clean and tidy. Steak and ale pie wonderful. Opted for the pensioners gammon and egg, this must have been as big as the standard meal. The chips were great, and I don't think I've had such hot food anywhere. Even the peas were hot, and that seems to be nearly impossible in most places.

This is a lovely pub. The restaurant is well set out and the food very good. The only let down is service when it is busy.

I visited the pub last night with friends, I have been here many times before over the last few years and have never had any issue. As we entered the bar area waiting to be served our drinks, we were greeted with a lady who was extremely rude to us from the get go, which we ignored initially. When asked if there were any tables she snapped at us once more. My friend asked for the bill for our drinks, we paid and left and went to another pub close by. We were all baffled as to why this young girl felt it appropriate to treat customers in this way. Such a shame because the food is fantastic, it’s a shame someone with zero customer service and a serious attitude problem is the first thing you are greeted with as you walk through the door.

Lots of specials on offer e.g. on Mondays a board of 'special' deals plus until 7 pm, a deal for those over 60. We went for gammon and chips and paid £1 extra for 'real' chips. Tried to get a local beer, but there didn't seem to be any.

Arrived to have lunch on a Saturday. Welcomed at the bar but were never asked if we wanted menus. No advise given as to whether we ordered food at the bar or it was waitress service. Just as we were pondering a girl came to take our order.

We were warmly welcomed into the pub and was soon found a table. The staff were very attentive and friendly. The main course was piled high on the plate and didn't look too appetising but it didn't taste too bad. Why do pubs think that you have to have mountains of food on the plate? The service was good and we will return.

We arrived here without a booking. It was busy, but we were easily accommodated.

We arrived with the intention of having main course and pudding. I am afraid we only managed main course, but were well and truly full, fat and satisfied! Three out of the party of four had pie and chips. It was superb. Lovely pastry and plenty of filling. My husband had the sizzler and he said it was delicious. Disappointed to have to miss dessert as their sponge puddings are very good. Next time hopefully.

Hubby and I and two friends ended up by default in the Hare and Hounds after visiting another pub and walking out because of the lack of ambience. What a delight our visit to the Hare and Hounds was from the moment we walked in the door. We were warmly welcomed and a table was quickly made ready for us. The menu gave a great choice and the four of us all had something different for the two courses. The presentation of the food was first class and was absolutely delicious. A thoroughly enjoyable evening. Thank you so much we will definitely be back and so will our friends.

past this place many times in the past and tonight we got a mini bus for 15 of us for our friend's birthday.What a lovely place with a fine selection of ales both traditional and some real ales, after being served we were shown to our tables and sat there in comfort to select our food. Our food was served piping hot and plenty of it i think every-one left some as we were all stuffed

Usually visit here with my family and we always love it here but last night in particular stood out to me! The food was the best I’ve ever had there it was gorgeous. Definitely, would recommend people to dine here, the food is top quality and you get exactly what you pay for if not more! Thank you x

Good value food, eaten there so many times and never a bad meal. Mondays it has deals on. Decent selection of real ales as well as normal selection of beer and wines

Had a very nice Sunday lunch of sea bass this last two Sunday's at the hare and hounds service was good and the veg was very tasty and plenty of it The surrounding were very pleasant and we came away quite full

I have been here twice now, We meet family who live in North Sheffield. The food has always been excellent & hot as there has always been about 15 + of us. The food always comes out together. We will be going again.

5 of us ate here today, the best value meal ever, delicious and ample, wonderful service, clean and friendly, polite and happy staff and FANTASTIC food... Roast of the day, enormous fish and chips, sausage and mash, sizzling chilli beef with home cooked chips, rice and salad. The sweets were yummy, I don't know how they make a profit!!

Visited here with my parents for their anniversary and had a lovely meal. It's quite a small dining area and was quite busy for a Thursday evening but I would say we arrived at peak time in the evening about 6:30pm.

visited last night.....o dear......the dish was described as ' marinated belly pork with stir fry vegetables, noodles in a thai hoisin sauce, confused or what? I think they were trying to present a Pad Thai. FAIL. the meat was undercooked and the marinade had not penetrated or tenderised the meat. the marinade would have benefited from some lemon grass, garlic and star anis and even some galangal. instead it was smothered in hoi sin sauce from a jar. leave the hoi sin for duck. the vegetables were sparse and some bean sprouts and lime would have been more appropriate. finally a garnish of chopped cashew nuts were required. overall VERY POOR. SERVICE WAS GOOD AND BEER FINE BUT THE MENU PLANNING AND EXECUTION NEED LOOKING AT. OH DEAR.

Been going here for years with friends and family and have got to know other customers, the staff and the owners quite well. The decor is good, clean and inviting. If you want to be in a busy pub stay in the bar area if you want a quiet chat go into the side room - every one happy. Food in either the bar, room or restaurant is amazing - proper portions and a great taste. The atmosphere is relaxed and Thursday evening is a good quiz night.

As this is local, me and my dad decided to give it a try.

I suggested to our friends that we stop at the hare and hounds in hoyland, on our way home from Wakefield to Chesterfield, as i had taken visitors from work there previously. All 6 of us really enjoyed our Sunday lunches. Our vegetarian friend was pleased with the veggie options available. The portions are generous and the food is really nicely cooked good honest pub food. We all enjoyed our meals and there were no leftovers. Desserts are also good and not expensive.

We rang up last minute on a busy Saturday night, and the gentleman said they were very busy but could fit us in. Even though they were busy we were very well looked after, the food came quickly to say that it was obviously freshly cooked to order, and it was well cooked with plenty of flavour.

Went at 5.30 on a Wednesday for steak night. £25 per couple for a sirloin or rump with a bottle of red or white wine.

I've eaten here in the past and have been impressed with the food. I had fish, chips and mushy peas today and was a little disappointed with the batter on my fish as it was rather soggy. The batter on my friend's onion rings was the same.

Went today with my boyfriend for Sunday lunch but ended up waiting over 40 minutes for our meals. Not that impressed!

We four luncheon on most Wednesdays in and around South Yorks. We have a league of enjoyment, and in one visit this venue went immediately went to the top. Please try the Scampi, you can really taste the the prawns.Very friendly staff, and good value, we will be back many, many times, already made a booking for Sunday Lunch.

This friendly pub came highly recommended and certainly didn’t disappoint. Beautiful home cooked food at very reasonable prices. Very polite and friendly staff and very cosy surroundings. Well worth a visit.

Recently visited at lunchtime. The pub is great and I would give it four stars, but the food, which is ok, could be better. Staff are wonderful and a good selection of ales. The menu tends not to change much and is sort of in between high end restaurant and low end cheap & cheerful. With examples of both of these close by, I think the Hare needs to shake things up a bit. A menu refresh is way overdue.

Cosy is the keyword, this is a busy little pub, set on the main Sheffield Road in Hoyland, (Junction 36 M1).

We reserved a table for our Saturday evening meal as we heard the pub got quite busy at weekends. It was very busy but we were served quickly. The food was excellent as were the waitresses who served us. A very friendly pub serving good food at reasonable prices. Well worth a visit.

Had a 3 course Lunch from the Christmas menu at lunchtime. Tomato soup starter was fairly decent. Main was turkey. Meat was poor, roast potatoes were terrible, mash watery, sprouts and carrots fine. Desert was a small Christmas pudding with strange tasting custard. Service was very slow also. Not a good Christmas lunch. Will try a different venue next year. Disappointing.

We went there as a family on Remembrance Sunday after Church Service. We were pre booked and arrived on time. At this point there were a few people in the restaurant but the bar tables were empty. We ordered 3 starters and 3 main course. It took 30 mins for starter to arrive. After that we waited 40 mins and still no main course. Plenty of take away cartons leaving the kitchen but no service for restaurant. Most annoying was the fact that the bar tables which were empty when we arrived were actually finishing their meal completely and we hadn’t been served! Staff were apologetic but really it’s not good enough for a set menu Sunday Lunch. We left after 1 hr 45 minutes and all we had was soup! Most definitely will NOT return.

We were a large party for Sunday Lunch. When we arrived the place was packed. The starters arrived promptly but we had to ask how much longer the main course would be. We were told we were waiting because we had ordered starters!! It was annoying to see what appeared to be take away cartons leaving the kitchen. If you can not serve the clientele in the restaurant then you should not be taking take away orders. After two hours we had only just finished mains. With two young children it is a long time.The food in general is always good and good value. This time several of the party complained the food could have been hotter. If the kitchen has a problem with large parties then why not ask for pre-orders. Normally this is our restaurant of choice for a family get-together. My brother who booked it for dad's birthday has said he will not go again. The waitresses were apologetic when we left and I appreciate they can only serve food as fast as it is prepared.

We attend here as a family quite often for birthdays etc.. We have never had a bad meal here. From start to finish we feel welcome and the eating area is a great atmosphere. All of the staff are hard working and very attentive! The food is always top notch and is better than most 4* hotels in Sheffield.. This is the type of food people want to be eating and the portion sizes are just right! Thankyou for always meeting our expectations I'm sure we'll be back soon!

Having rang up at last minute for a table we were delighted that we were able to get a table for Sunday lunch for 3. The bar staff was really great and was seated to a lovely table. The pub apmoshere was great. Our food and service was excellent. Will definitely be visiting again.

We went to the Cock Inn but food was not being served so we decided to try the Hare and Hounds for the first time.

On a wet Tuesday night first impressions of the H&H; were encouraging and we received a warm welcome from the bar and waiting staff. The menus OK consisting of expected pub menu dishes and we had heard of the sizzler dishes.

Visited the Hare and Hounds on a very wet and miserable evening but once inside things changed. Bustling pub with a good atmosphere and warm welcome. Excellent food at very good prices, wish we lived in the area but will tell my daughter who does.

Visited last night, a very warm welcome, excellent choice of food. The food then served was absolutely beautiful. More than generous portions. Staff were always on hand and were very friendly. A great night out, will definitely be visiting again. Many thanks.

Made another visit to this welcoming pub knowing a good meal is available. There was 3 of us and we chose pork t bone, duck comfet and from the Daily Specials board, sirloin with mushrooms and Stilton sauce all served with a generous helping of chips, peas, carrots and cauliflower. The meals were, once again, very enjoyable, and we look forward to visiting again soon.

Four of us meet here for lunch several times a year. We always receive a very warm welcome and enjoy the beer and the excellent choice of food. We have never had a disappointing meal and invariably choose from the £7.50 menu where there is a wide choice of pub favourites, including a couple of roasts, and an equally good choice of desserts. Highly recommended.

Nearly good, nearly all of the time, we had fillet steaks previous which were always good, this time not so well executed, ordered MW got W to Cremated and the normally seasoned veg were tasteless. Chips always excellent. Onion rings sensational. Service good. Owner needs make sure all Chefs sing off the same hymn sheet please. Excellent prices - proper "bar food" not bistro pub with daft prices for posh fish and chips!!! Plenty to eat. In general four stars!!

The food is lovely all fresh home made chips good portions they do a pensioners special two courses for £6.95 till 7pm service is great and prices are right for what you get my only grumble is the lighting it is poor and the tables in the bar area are nearly in darkness

Popped in here one Saturday afternoon. There were a few locals in and the banter with the barmaid was fabulous. Beer was good too. Came back later for fish and chips which was massive and yummy.

Had lunch on Mother's Day here and the meal was excellent couldn't complain about anything if anything could have done with a bigger table squeezing 5 on a 4 table was a bit tight but we went for the meal not the seating arrangement.excellent service,excellent food excellent company what more could a mother want .we will be returning soon as it is my favourite place

Just called for Saturday evening dinner. This place is hell on earth . Noisiest pub we've been in for some time .Table for six in the bar area . Starter garlic mushrooms quite nice actually , sizzling beef for main absolutely awful, tough as old boot . Told the waitress ,who told the manager ,who in turn told the waitress ,to tell us he'd tell the butcher . So the ignoramous manager hadn't the decency to tell us himself. Surely when everyone on a table leaves more than they ate something is drastically wrong with the food . Ah well their loss that's another six people won't be returning anytime soon.

All 4 of us enjoyed our meals,in a good atmosphere, friendly staff ,good selection of beer if there is one slight downside when its busy parking is at a premium, but it did not spoil our night

Up from oxfordshire on a few days break passed the hare and hound turned around and went in on the off chance so glad we did we had to steaks and a bottle of wine for £25 food was excellent and the chips were home made and fryed in lard I think anyway the were fantastic.the staff are so happy and friendly and the pub decor is very nice and very clean.if you are in the area I would recommend a visit.we would like to say a big thank you to all that work at the pub.

Sadly went here for the funeral of a well respected local.Place was packed and buffet good.Will return on a happier occasion perhaps.

Visited this pub for the first time in December 2016,reccommended by a friend.Thoroughly enjoyed our meal,the portions were good and the staff were friendly and helpful.Some of the tastiest pub food I have had recently and will definately be returning.The steamed pudding I had fof desert was delicious.

Thought me & the kids would try The H&H as we were visiting the area and went to Trip Advisor for a recommendation. Bland food, tables not cleaned,not much atmosphere and most of the team looked as if they would rather be somewhere else.

We were staying at Tankersley Manor and needed a meal on the Saturday evening. Having googled for local pubs/restaurants we thought this sounded ideal. We were not wrong. We rang and booked ahead on the Saturday afternoon, to be told that that the restaurant was full (and I thought January was a quiet month), but we could have a table in the lounge. When we arrived the pub/bar area was packed. Our table was away from the bar, which we were pleased about. We both ordered a sizzler, chilli beef from the main menu and BBQ pork from the specials. Both come with chips, rice or half and half. We also ordered some onion rings. All of the food was tasty, fresh, hot and superb value for money. The menu choice is great, but in York were we live we don't see much sizzler type food on the menu, so for us we enjoyed these dishes very much. The hotel room had a fridge, so the waitress brought us a box to doggy bag up the left overs, as we only ate half of it. If in the area, this pub is worth a visit.

My husband and I just been for a late lunch time meal. It was really good value - 2 courses for £6.95 for over 60's! This was our first time here and we shall certainly be returning again!

I have visited this pub many times and have always enjoyed tasty food. Staff are not very helpful, but the food is worth this inconvenience.However, I visited with my family today and will never return. On entry to the bar, we were asked by a very curt waitress if we had booked. We said that this was a spur of the moment visit. A table was found and eventually a waitress took our order Please note , there were only 3 other groups eating in the pub, one of which was a large birthday party. A pleasant waitress took our order and brought drinks . We waited patiently. One hour and 29 minutes later, the waitress returned to our table . She asked what we had ordered as she had forgotten.She also said that the kitchen had been unable to read her writing and she had come to check. We waited again. It was now one hour and thirty five minutes since our entry to the pub. No one had told us any information about our order or how long it would be . One hour and forty five minutes after our arrival , I informed the bar staff that I was now going to pay for our drinks, but as my husband had to return to work, we did not wish to eat .He had clients waiting and did not wish to be late . I explained this , but the bar staff were quite curt . They said that the food was now ready. When I asked if it was normal policy to forget a client's order , leave then totally unattended with no idea of when their food might be ready and ignore them completely , they made no comment.. I left the establishment feeling quite out out and rather hungry, I had also been short changed on the drinks ! A very disappointing experience altogether.

We visit this place several times a month. The food is good and consistent. The staff are really friendly. The atmosphere is good.

Six of us ate here on Saturday afternoon, we had the over 60's menu, and all enjoyed the various meals and puddings..I would just like to say how kind and helpful the staff and the landlord were, they just couldn't have done more to make us feel more comfortable

We eat here with my parents every time we visit Yorkshire. It is a smashing little pub with very friendly and obliging landlord and staff. There is an excellent choice of food. It arrives well presented and well cooked. My prawn cocktail had loads of prawns. All the mains were superb. I even managed a treacle sponge which was delicious. A wonderful meal.

Absolutely fabulous food and atmosphere, enjoyed the hoi sin duck special, slightly pricey drinks though, that would be my only negative

Lovely Sunday lunch . Pork was excellent and plentiful freshly cooked veg. Beef ,Ham,and Chicken all very good according to the family. Friendly efficient staff. Why go to a chain restaurant when this is on your doorstep .Fantastic value as well .

Took parents and other family members for a lunch time meal. All picked from the senior specials. Was not disappointed. Plenty to eat, well presented and prepared. Staff attentive and friendly. It's nice to find a pub open on a Monday lunch time serving senior citizens specials at a good price and even nicer, it's delicious food.
