We were holidaying in the area and called in at Malton. Alas like most old market towns it’s become down trodden and full of charity shops however amongst all that there is this little lovely cafe/coffee shop the staff are great its dog friendly and the light bite food coffee and tea are a delight a truly great spot and I highly recommend

Nice location on the market place. There are four rooms - two upstairs and two downstairs - so much bigger than it first appears. We called in for coffee but ended up having afternoon tea for two. Excellent scones with loads of jam and cream. Teapot of tea and offer of refill for the coffee. Staff were lovely - very friendly and pleasant. Toilets were very nice but beware - quite a lot of steps to get there!

Slightly disappointed by this cafe experience given there's so much competition in Malton. Staff were lovely and they're dog friendly so that's what drew us in on a cold day for a hot bevvy. Latte was good, lemon drizzle cake homemade and delicious. It was the monkey hot chocolate which let the experience down. The hot choc was good - very chocolatey. But given it was £4.95 for cream, marshmallows and a flake it's not worth the cost. 6 mini marshmallows, a thin coating of cream and a flake that disintegrated (and fell off on delivery to the server's tray) because the cream was so thin it didn't really cut it. The cafe smelt greasy and the chairs are uncomfortable. If in Malton again I'd try somewhere else rather than rush back.

Good food, good view (of the Market Place), friendly staff. My friend and I had a lovely lunch here. Didn’t mind the half hour wait for lunch (half-term and end of Food Festival) as the place was pretty and the drinks came swiftly. The sandwiches were fresh and flavoursome . We both recommend the chocolate and vanilla marble cake (didn’t need the takeaway bag offered as we managed the large pieces). Malton it

I popped in for a coffee and scone with my wife during our visit to York to celebrate a significant birthday. The service was impeccable, the fruit scone beautifully tasty with just the right amount of jam and cream, and the extra free cup of filter coffee was the icing on the cake! Thoughtful touches like the table flowers, framed photos, paintings for sale and extra paper towels in the washrooms make all the difference.

Just been welcomed by friendly and polite staff at The Hidden Monkey cafe. A lovely menu with plenty of light bites, cakes and a specials board to choose from. My husband had a bacon and sausage sandwich, whilst I choose a really delicious feta, hummus and sundried tomato granary sandwich ( Fantastic choice) I really enjoyed it. The cakes looked lovely too. Thanks to the staff who were very polite and welcoming, unlike a place we walked out of a few minutes earlier. We would definitely like to return.

Very disappointing! Cosy open fire downstairs but it was full so you have to schelp upstairs, find a table and schelp downstairs again to order. It was chilly (both upstairs and the staff’s attitude). Ordered poached eggs on toast x 2 with bacon. Easy! Square shaped sliced cheap bread, scant butter, burnt toast, 2 rock hard eggs, bacon burnt to a crisp. One very bitter flat white and one weak and willing filter coffee. Pretty awful. I definitely won’t go again.

Called in on spec on a Saturday lunchtime and we were lucky enough to find a table. Other folk weren't so lucky, but were told by surly staff that they didn't know if there were any free tables and sent the prospective customers to go upstairs and look! Surely a simple CCTV camera could be used to save folk moving around an already small building only to walk out disappointed? Service was on the slower side of acceptable and the drinks (a tea and Mocha) were really good. Food was good quality, but fairly meagre portions. The ploughman's lunch cost £12 with a £2 surcharge to add ham. This ham was tasty, but was barely a slice. Overall, not bad but we'll be looking for other places to eat in Malton.

Came to Malton on my birthday - a very wet, miserable Tuesday - and having read reviews decided to stop by for a nice lunch. We were greeted by a host who informed us that there would be a 30-minute wait for food, which we didn't mind. Amongst other things on the special's board was a pork pie platter for £9.95; just our kind of thing. We ordered 2 and 2 pots of different loose-leaf tea. There were 3 tables in the small area of the cafe where we were, which amounted to a family of 3 and 2 tables of 2. Food eventually started arriving at the other tables and we were served 45 minutes after ordering. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. Everything on the platter - and I use the term loosely - had come out of a packet. Whilst there is nothing wrong with this, I don't understand why the wait for food was so long. We were served a quarter of a pork pie, coleslaw, 2 slices of cheddar and a couple of slices of ham. Very poor considering the price and title of the dish. The bill came to just over £25 and even the lady who was on the till questioned it to see if that was right. I wouldn't recommend or return.

Hidden Monkey Café in Malton is one of my favourite local cafes but this visit I was somewhat disappointed. The place was well heated & clean as usual. The lady server was very friendly, the food was perfect. However as I was finishing & it was getting busy & people were trying to find seats, I got up to allow another family to sit at our table & in doing so I moved our dirty cups & placed them on the side next to the kitchen for easy collection & to allow the group to sit comfortably. A different lady came to take out payment & when she saw me clearing the table, I didn't get an 'oh thank you for your help' like you'd usually expect, I instead got a very snotty response of 'I was getting to that if you'd just leave it'. Hmm. Very rude & unnecessary. I was only trying to help & left feeling I had done wrong. It definitely put me off going back for a while. Very disappointed. It doesn't take much for manners!

I visit the Money regularly with my husband. It is what it seems to be: a traditional tearoom. It you want chrome and glass, and 'have a nice day service' then you won't like it. If you want somewhere relaxing to pass a little time and have some refreshment, then it's great. The staff, though sometimes a little pressed for time, are golden-hearted, and will certainly go well beyond their role to help people.

Usually ok but poor food today! I mentioned that the food wasn't great and left it at that. It must be just me, or so I was told when I went to pay! They are local butchers sausages apparently from Fox's! They didn't look or taste like a butchers sausage but if they were I'll be giving them a wide berth also! Begrudgingly knocked me £1 off which I didn't ask for! Go elsewhere for actual good local produce there's plenty in Malton and the difference is obvious! Waitress was very nice! The 'Diet Coke' is a cheap alternative too! Or maybe it's a local brand! I really couldn't be bothered to argue I'll just vote with my feet!

We usually have a full English but decided to try the jacket potato/salad combo. Mine with prawn mayo & my Husband's with tuna mayo. It was brilliant! Such a great portion size, I struggled to finish it! And definitely a lot for your money. Very fresh, well made & very well presented. The staff are always friendly & helpful & the place has a really nice atmosphere. The only thing I'd say is don't come in a rush as it does take some time to be served & fed. It's definitely worth it though & we will be back soon. Thank you :-)

Always good quality food priced well. Doggie friendly, there are usually a few in. Very traditional Yorkshire building, nice upstairs too. Love the atmosphere.

Visited on Saturday during food festival and was looking for a cafe to cater for me with coeliac disease so gluten free. Staff were busy but helpfully showed me the menu for people with special diets. Food was labelled as low gluten as they said legislation prohibited them from stating it was gluten free as they couldn't rule out contamination in the kitchen. It was good that they they were aware of contamination but need educating as coeliacs need to know that the bread etc is or is not gluten free . I suggest you contact coeliac uk for information as you are obviously confused.

This is a lovely place but let down by how chaotic it was . I got two scones and two coffees took the scones to our table and was told the drinks would be brought across, The scones were hard ( certainly not fresh ) I had trouble biting mine I had to cut it up to eat it , it was dry , I also noticed someone took a scone back I heard the girl say it must of got mixed up with the fresh ones , ours must have been last weeks ,It was 15 minutes before we got our drinks I noticed several tables hadn't got theres either , people were going to the counter to complain by this time . Just needs a bit more organising, who wants to eat a scone without a drink !!!..on the other hand we will go again to try the Gardeners lunch which looked delicious

Great food and service from the staff. Really enjoyed my meal here. I had the black pudding to start and fillet beef for main. Looking forward to my next visit already!
