I don’t get away much as have my own business so was looking forward to this stay , Got upgraded from annex to main house and told music from a wedding til midnight which we were fine with. First room smelt so bad of mould and damp so I rejected , second room offered looked like student accommodation, had a view of the bins and had black mould round the shower so I rejected , 3rd room I was offered had stained carpets , ( as did all actually ) bed was so awful hardly slept could feel the springs and bathroom had a mould patch on ceiling and dirty grouting . Utterly ridiculous really , manager didn’t come a see me to apologise , staff were nice enough just kept saying sorry as if they deal with it all the time . No offer of compensation , I didn’t make a fuss as was with son for his 18th . In my opinion needs closing and all the issues sorting out , a good clean , some money spent on rooms , definitely not a 4* hotel, cheep things in rooms , containers catching leaks in corridors , really ?? Come on whoever owns it , ( asked the staff who did and they said they couldn’t remember his name ) spend some money on your hotel as has amazing potential but currently a bit of a mess . 😔

5 stars from my wife and I, we stayed in room 7 it's very spacious with a very large king-size bed, which was soft and comfortable. the ensuite was huge with a bath and a separate shower. Rooms are warm and pleasantly decorated. The staff are friendly and polite, special thanks to Gracie, the receptionist/bar maid who was very busy but always helpful. Waiting staff are professional, the evening meal was very tasty and the amount of breakfast well worth the cost. The grounds are fenced, so a secure place if you have children, there's a short walk nearby to the castle grounds and a nature garden. Malton is a stones throw from the Lodge. It's rustic and modern, drinks are reasonably priced, and shelves well stocked in the bar. We were allowed to leave our car parked after check out to visit Malton town

Having stayed here before, we thought this was a safe bet to stay at again. The room had a musty smell, and there were signs of water intrusion in the past. The bed was too soft and fairly uncomfortable. We returned one evening to find our door hadn't been fully closed following the daily clean. Thankfully, nothing had been taken! The positives are that the building looks lovely and the grounds are well kept, there's ample parking. The room was a good size, and the bathroom too. Although the shower screen on the bath didn't seem to do its job, there was a pool of water on the bathroom floor after each shower. Sorry, I slipped a negative in there... maybe it was all that water on the floor 😉 Our experience this time around may have made us decide not to stay here in the future tbh! We visit friends in Malton annually.

Not impressed. With there customer service I’m afraid. Room wasn’t ready for check in time. But yet if you pay nearly £70 for an early check in. There excuse was they were short staffed. That may be the case but if you’re needing to meet people at a certain time it’s not good. And I’m sorry but I wasn’t going to pay £70 just to check in 40 minutes before check in time. Staff on reception when we arrived just didn’t seem that bothered.

Enjoyed our stay and an easy five stars. Best bits: * The establishment - including its grounds - oozes history and character * Upgraded room with massive jacuzzi sized bath (and bathroom) along with separate shower * Fascinating local in the hotel bar who owns a nearby village (downgrade from his family half of Yorkshire a couple of centuries ago but it'll do). Won't go into more details due to discretion, indeed it is only his openness that gives me moral permission to post this. But if you like people you'll love him. And Hugh if you're reading the member of Genesis we'd both forgotten the name of was Peter Gabriel! * Great staff - really lovely and helpful. Unfortunately I didn't get any of their names otherwise I'd mention them, but we liked literally everyone - either they went out of their way to help us or would have done if we'd needed them to. Not so great: * Hot water supply to said room needs upgrading - it's plenty to fill the massive bath or the shower, but it's not enough to refill it. * Supper's not bad but should be better (I can see why that would be hard at the current prices - so just put them up!). Didn't try breakfast so can't comment on that. Random observation neither good nor bad: We stayed for three nights and while there was definitely housekeeping going on, they didn't go to our room. Am not bothered about that cause firstly like I said the staff were great and I'm sure we could have asked for housekeeping if we'd wanted it, and secondly the rooms were huge but it did mean we felt a bit guilty leaving three days worth of rubbish. Maybe we just need to learn to make less rubbish :D

Great location. The place needs improvement. I thought I was arriving at Downton Abbey but was more Faulty towers on the first night. We got put into the old lodgings on the first night. Nothing like the hotel. The windows were broken. There is a issue with damp. Down the road and no parking so you have to walk down. The faulty fire alarm went off around 3am. Fire brigade came out. The night staff member was useless, I have since found out he's handed his notice in. The next day things got much better. We got a huge upgrade of being put into a beautiful 4 poster bedroom with a standing bath in the room. Noticed the hotel itself needs a bit of TLC. The woman on reception was so helpful and lovely. She couldn't of helped anymore and was so sorry about the first night. I would stay again though if in the second room we stayed in

Went last November, though not to leave a review thinking maybe one off but reading today others one star review changed my mind. Booked £120 family room for 3 ( young child). Carpet was dirty and curtains soiled made me uncomfortable and made me think of checking the bedding ? I normally don’t because you can feel the freshness of clean bedding….anyway.. one look on one side and a long dark hair was sitting on the pillow… ok maybe was the cleaner? had a look on the other side and found a black curled pubic hair and when pulled the duvet was one more black curly leg hair… basically could tell the sex and gender of each person who slept in that bed… I felt sick from my stomach.. never recovered from this till today…. Went to reception and they changed our room immediately with a proper one .. This place is a ruin and should be closed down… Still don’t understand how is still doing this to the people?? Disgusting and disgraceful

1 star for the lovely location but worst Hotel bar none wouldn't stay there again in fact never stayed unless you can count the 2hours we were there. Booked in by the manageress then just over an hour later whilst reporting the fact the room was filthy the receptionist told us no rooms had been cleaned. Basically a manageress aware of issues chose to knowingly put us in a dirty room and then ask a receptionist to offer us a free drink whilst she gave it a once over. Their idea of dealing with the problem was unprofessional, unacceptable and we made the decision to leave.

The Old Lodge is such a stunning building. Full of character and history. The rooms are spacious and clean. The staff have been so cheerful and helpful. The staff came to my aid a year ago. My parents are in their 80's. My father had suffered with dementia for 6 years. They hadn't had a holiday for a number of years. I rang The Old Lodge explained our needs, we trialled a night. I can't thank the staff enough. We've been back 5 times and have booked again We love the place. I stayed over with my children and their partners to visit Flamingoland. One stay was enough - it looks a nice hotel online from the photos, but beware as many guests are accommodated in what they call the Old Lodgings which is actually an old terrace house 300 yards down the road which even the staff admit is substandard! Nice main building, a little tired, very understaffed - we felt sorry for the rude receptionist so collected empty glasses and rearranged tables outside ourselves, average food, though reasonable pricing but the listing does show breakfast included which invariably it isnt. Definite One Star ⭐️ ☹️

Four stars, one lost for the following. How I wish hotels would utilise summer duvets, in preference to the wrong duvets, as in a winter duvet, too hot to be under in September, yet too chilly to be thrown off, leading to a disturbed night's sleep as was the case and reported to reception here at The Old Lodge. What a location, what a building, what a (tired darkly lit) room and yet everything worked well. Lovely grounds wirh ample garden seating, and with safe parking. The service from reception to dining room and onto checking out was impeccable in its friendliness and efficiency.

Rooms in the separate block are half the price of the main hotel and are fine. But you are walking down the main road to get to them. I have eaten twice here, and the food is mediocre for the cost. The bar is a nice space to spend some time as are the outside grounds. An on-site EV charger would make the hotel more appealing as its a 10 minute walk to the nearest one.

3.5/5 The lodge is situated in a great location if you’re planning on visiting York and exploring the Moors. We booked a room in the Old Lodging building, but were checked in one of the Feature rooms, which was a nice bonus. The lodge gives off a Downton Abbey vibe, but “on a budget”. It would have been so much more impressive if the owners kept it up. We were finding dead bugs and cobwebs everywhere around the room, breakfast was served a bit cold and we had to wait quite a bit. I’d say it’s more like a 3 star hotel. The main thing that makes it a 4 star are the bathrobes provided in the room. Despite many people staying at the same time as we were, it was very quiet and we never heard any noise from the street or inside the lodge. Entrance to the property is easy to miss, so pay attention when approaching it.

Food was OK but not great. Whilst we had fun it was more about the company and friends rather than the venue and event. They were short of staff, with reception working the bar and a lack of waiting staff. You could either check-in or order a drink! We were in room 15. AVOID - it is tiny, with little room to move around the bed. On arrival the curtains were hanging off the rail. I reported this when we went for dinner and was told it would be repaired. I checked after dinner and nothing had been done. I queried this at reception and the lady who told me it would be fixed, then informed me there was no one from maintenance available. I requested a room change but they were fully booked. Eventually they bodged a repair. Why was the roo presented like that. It reflects the lack of care and attention throughout the hotel. The bathroom had been recently refitted and was nice, apart from the steam, as the extractor fan didn't work and the strong unpleasant smell from the drains. There was no where in the bathroom to put our toiletries, it needs a shelf, we had to put ours on top of the wardrobe in the bedroom. The TV didn't work, the wardrobe was tiny. You couldn't hang a dress in it. There was no decent mirror in the bedroom, just a small one on a dressing table squeezed in by the bed, with no room for a chair or stool. The bed was very soft and for us, uncomfortable. The walls are thin and you can clearly hear people in other rooms talking. Romantic it was not. Dinner was OK but the soup was really thick passata, strong and not nice. The salmon was OK but the veg didn't arrive at the same time and when it did there were no serving spoons. We weren't offered wine or water. Our eggs were missing at breakfast... The whole hotel is run down, chairs in the bar are split with exposed foam. in summary, I'd avoid and the locals we spoke to agree. It shows as 4* on the website but it's barely 2* in reality. There are so many elements required for a 4* rating that are missing it should be investigated

This used to be one of ‘The Places to go’ in Malton. We had heard mixed reports in recent months but decided to give it a try after being some time since going there. ‘Crispy Whitebait’ while quite tasty had lost their crisp. One of the meat dishes was sent back and exchanged for a different meat as it seemed as though it had been pre-sliced and been kept warm until required. Roasties seemed as though they had been cooked on the previous day then warmed up again. The ones in the party having desserts reported them to be just ‘OK’ Have to say the young wait staff were charming, polite and helpful.

Careful when you book, you may be in the "lodge" described as 100 metres down the road (more like 300) with no parking, it's not ideal, you need to park in the hotel, where breakfast is served etc, but you are down a thin main road, approximately 300 metres away in the rain. If you forget something in your car, it's a nightmare. The lodge, (which you get no real directions to from the very unhelpful staff) has stairs down to it, (lethal in the wet) and it's like a maze. When you do eventually find your room, it has damp patches on the ceiling, cracks everywhere (even in the bath) stains on the carpet...it's not great. Phone to complain if you like, but no one answers the phone (you'll need to email) You will get a reply (eventually) offering a different room, described as worse than your current room, it really doesn't do anything to help the situation. My honest opinion is, they really don't care, you paid in advance.

Stayed for 1 night at the weekend and all I can say is WOW! A stunning hotel, with beautiful gardens, the room was fantastic, food was delicious and service was 2nd to none. Would thoroughly recommend a stay here and can't wait to return. I feel I must mention Tristan who greeted us warmly at reception upon arrival, a lovely young man who was also tending the bar and served us in the Dining Room on the evening a real asset to the hotel

Perfect from start to finish. For the first year ever we decided to dine out for Christmas day dinner, and we will never look back! From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we had the best festive time. The service was amazing and the food was incredible. 10/10! Will definitely be back

Two years ago Malton Old Lodge served good lunches and the staff were well trained, professional and courteous. What has happened ? Our dining experience was very disappointing. We celebrated my daughters wedding with an evening meal for 7 adults & 4 young children in late December. There was no welcome from staff on our arrival. We spent time in the bar before the meal and then a member of staff said we could go in to the small dining room that was just for us . No one came to take our drink order even after the starter was served and we had to ask. The meals were poorly presented and the food was of poor quality. The staff were neither professional .nor courteous. It is a beautiful building and the small dining room we were in is a great venue . However without good cuisine and courteous well trained staff , we will not be eating there again.

Awful visit Was meant to be a treat for a friend of mine who had been a huge support to me and my baby during lockdown. Staff were rude and dismissive. Showers didn’t work in either rooms! No option of toast at breakfast Promised a call back. Not heard. Will NOT stay again or recommend

My husband and l stayed for 2 nights just recently after l had a drink in the bar with friends in summer on way back from the seaside. Thought it was a stately home at first! Not only a beautiful old building with all the quirks to be expected, but we were upgraded to the honeymoon suite which was a lovely suprise. We ate here on both our evenings as we liked the menu's good reviews, and were not dissapointed with the choice, quality, portion size or service. The drinks were reasonably priced too. The grounds are gorgeous, so close to the centre of Malton and our room was cleaned on the second day with used items replaced ect. The staff were friendly and attentive, so what was there not to enjoy? We were even lucky with the weather! Thanks to everyone involved with our stay. We will be returning!

Finally getting away overnight since Covid, I could not have wished for anything more. The location is well suited for all tastes with a great many things to do in the area. Malton is itself a very old market town with plenty of history. The Old Lodge is situated in its own grounds just a few minutes walk from the town centre and has got its own history. There is a large private car park. The room was advertised as a Feature room and I think that was a fair description, see the photographs to make up your own opinion. We had a number of enjoyable meals at the property. Bar snack when arriving at the property, dining in the restaurant for evening meal and also a delightful breakfast. I thought the description re breakfast was misleading when I booked the break. I thought breakfast was going to be a continental breakfast. That was definitely not the case. Yes you can have a continental breakfast but also on the menu was a full English breakfast, choices for vegans along with Salmon, Kippers, or sandwiches. All in all a delightful break.

What a lovely place and such friendly helpful staff, the rooms are so clean and big, we are in the lodge rooms literally 200 yards away from the main building and that is no problem. The food at the restaurant food is top quality and very reasonably priced.

Afternoon Tea was shocking basic bread , basic filling plastic ham. We at least expected some granary bread and nice white bread the fillings were so plain and the cakes were shop bought the scones were so tiny and basic definitely not home made . Not worth the money .

Having previously enjoyed a Christmas meal at the Lodge, me and my husband decided to return here for Sunday lunch. We ordered two beef dinners. The food came out in 5 minutes and the quality was very disappointing. The beef was pink and incredibly chewy, so much so it was very difficult to eat. The roast potatoes were hard where they had been kept in the oven too long and the vegetables were cold. The drinks were not much better either. My husband's beer was flat and my wine tasted very cheap and nasty. Both meals cost 28 pound and the drinks were over 10 pound. It was an absolute waste of 40 pound which could have bought us a nice meal else where. We will not be returning.

Great meal, with great service, couldn't really fault it or the place and staff, and unlike a lot of eatery's around this area it didn't cost an arm and leg either.
