We were staying in Acklam and in search of a drink. We arrived at the half moon inn and were welcomed by an extremely nice group of people. The owners, Neil and Carol, were very friendly and a lot of fun. We came for just a few drinks and ended up staying late into the evening. We booked a table for four as we were staying locally. It was our first visit but won’t be our last! The pub internally is immaculate, with really good Covid-19 practices in place. We ordered three steak and ale pies and one scampi, various drinks and a bottle of wine. The pie was absolutely delicious and I’m assured the scampi was too. We went on to have a dessert, one sticky toffee pudding and one raspberry cheesecake, which again were both delicious. I can’t recommend this pub highly enough. It has a really lovely atmosphere, really fabulous food and was very reasonably priced. All four of us said we wouldn’t hesitate to return. Thanks so much for the wonderful food and service!

Off the beaten track, the Half Moon is well worth the couple of extra miles for an evening meal or a Sunday lunch. The inn is cosy and clean, with a warm welcome from Neil and Carol, and serves excellent home-cooked pub classics. From a good range of traditional options, their exceptional steak and ale pie is my favourite. Depending on the day of your visit you’ll find a specials board with curries, fish and chips, tasty steaks of various sizes or a proper Sunday roast beef dinner. With very well kept Tetley’s to wash it down, what’s not to like? The well stocked bar usually has another guest ale e.g. Osset Blond or a Wold Top beer. A limited takeaway service has been available during lockdown 2 but I am already looking forward to sitting down again next month to enjoy a pie and a pint - cheers!!

We live locally and had not been in this pub for years. Following a recommendation, 4 of us enjoyed a great evening in a very friendly atmosphere. The steak was excellent, as were all the tasty bits served with it. The men very much enjoyed the beer. We were really pleasantly surprised just how nice this place is and wonder why we have not been for so long?! This is definitely the place to visit if you are in the area and you want a delicious meal in a pleasant country pub with good beer and friendly welcoming staff. Do hope the word spreads about this place, they certainly deserve to do well. Thanks Half Moon!

Went for Sunday lunch yesterday, our first time there.First impressions of the actual place were very good. Everything done properly with regards to Covid. The lady behind the bar, the owner I think, was very welcoming and showed us to our table. Because of Covid, everything was table service. The roast beef and all the trimmings was absolutely cooked to perfection, the beef was very tender. I can honestly say that the roast potatoes were the best I’ve ever had eating out. Golden and crunchy on the outside, light and fluffy on the inside. There were 4 different veggies , all good and plenty of gravy and of course home made Yorkshire puds.I didn’t have a desert, but my husband had the homemade lemon cheesecake. He said it was delicious. It certainly looked good.Future Sunday lunches out will be taken at the Half Moon of that I have no doubt.Highly recommended.

Spot on! We stayed in Aclam for a few nights and ate in the local village pub. Despite being a couple of southerners we were made to feel so welcome by Neil and Carol (and the locals) that we went back again the next night too. They've really thought about Covid in the current climate and although a limited menu the food was lovely and homemade and the ale really well kept. Curry night on a Tuesday and then steak and ale pie on the Weds ready and waiting for us after a long days walking in the Wolds. We couldn't want for anymore. Hope you give them a try.

We have an annual Christmas Dinner and this year we chose the Half Moon.On arrival we received a warm welcome from the staff at this cosy little country pub hidden away in the Wolds south of Malton. It was a freezingly, bitter cold day, but the log burner was roaring away keeping the pub nice and warm. We had pre-chosen our meals from their Christmas Menu. Between the eight of us we had turkey, beef and salmon with all the trimmings and eight different vegatables all perfectly cooked and presented. All of this was served up quickly and most important to us - hot - and there was plenty of it. We had Chistmas pudding with brandy sauce and lemon tart with cream for deserts, yummy, and coffee. The staff were wonderfull and with this quality of food and service along with reasonable prices this venue offers great value for money. We will most definitely go there again.

Great service, excellent value, enjoyable entertainment (we went on a Friday night) and food was lovely. We both had steak and all the trimmings and they were the best steaks we have ever had. We asked where they were from and were told they were from a local farmer in newton on derwent...they were cooked to perfection! For dessert we had Granny Apple, caramel tart which was homemade and was yummy, it rounded off the evening well. The reasons we didn't give a score of five out of five is because the chips were slightly under done and the pub doesn't take plastic, only cash. However, we will be back very soon and looking forward to it.

If you fancy a trip into some beautiful countryside and a bite to eat at a friendly country pub then I recommend this spot, situated between Malton, York and Driffield. We went for a family lunch on a Saturday. There were a couple of other tables of diners but it was fairly quiet at that time. The landlady took our order and was very pleasant. We booked a 2 course meal for 2 with a Groupon deal and then added two extra people to the reservation. After travelling through lots of countryside we arrived at 5pm and parked in the car park at the back- a bit rough and ready looking up a steep slope. The outside looks nice for a country pub. On entering we thought the place smelled very musty, foisty and of ancient cigarettes and looked in need of a revamp. The place was empty as it has just opened. Our reservation caused a minor problem as it was on the computer but not written in the book. Friendly staff who took our order, explained the menu and brought the drinks. A good selection of music playing which was modern pop and then classic 60s songs. The food arrived after 20-30 mins and looked delicious. The portions were huge. A light snack of a chicken panini could have fed two! We also ordered the gammon, a starter of garlic mushrooms, half chicken, lasagne (best I have tasted) and then a chocolate brownie to take away. The chips with the meals were home cooked and crispy but just too much and nobody could eat it all. The gammon steak was duly wrapped up to take away without problem. The total cost with the voucher, 4 drinks and 2 extra meals was an amazing £26. Friendly staff and locals that arrived around 6pm as there was a charity night on, which would have been good to stay for but was too far away from home. A much better experience than we initially expected and we would return if in the vicinity.

I ate here with my wife and her parents. The pub itself is in a nice location - out of the way. Although i wouldnt say the pub was anything special inside, the food was good and the beer was excellent - particularly the Guzzler (a must try).Nothing to complain about in regards to the food, if i was being picky id say the veg was slightly over cooked - but as i say that would have been picky. We enjoyed the meal - really need to go back for the steak night. Also on the plus side, as we had travelled there in our camper van and the in laws had theirs - we were kindly allowed to stay in the car park. Which we could enjoy the beer even more so.Only one thing is, please pick up the dog mess in the car park. Will definately be returning.

We were staying locally with our son and daughter in law who had a group on voucher for The Half Moon so he booked Sunday Lunch. We all ordered the Roast Beef and had pre- lunch drinks. They had a choice of 3 real ales - very good for such a small pub - and when I enquired about the draught cider for the ladies was offered a small taster to sample. The local draught bitter was very good. The roast dinner was good; the beef tender and succulent, the vegetables al dente, including battered parsnip. One slight grouse, we would have preferred slightly more roast potatoes and less mash.Puddings were also very good. Service and attention commendable. Only two other couples dining there which is a shame. I have paid a lot more for Sunday lunch - that is the menu price, not the group on one - and not had as good a meal. All in all a very nice, yet small, country pub.

As a regular of the half moon inn which i think speaks for itself i'v always found the food, drinks and service to be of a high standard, have been to a couple of their themed nights which were fantastic. Their open mike nights are a great evening out with some great talents on show, will definitely be back.

Living just a few miles away from this lovely country pub we don't really take time to visit places that are local but glad we did with The Half Moon at Acklam. We went for sunday lunch, although there was a great selection of other meals should you not fancy a sunday lunch and all priced very resonable, we had beef sunday lunch and what a plate full we got, all fresh veggies, homemade yorkshire's and the beef was so tender it probably is one of the best sunday lunches weve had for a while. We will defo return to this lovely village pub to try some of the other meals on offer, also the landlady and landlord are very cheery and helpful.Try for yourself you will not be disappointed if you are then there is something wrong with you!!

At time of visit in Feb 2015 the Menu in my opinion was everything you want as 'PUB GRUB' being a northerner. Good selection, food good, and had fish, meat, vegetarian options and a specials board. We was very pleased with using our Groupon offer coupons and said we would go back, and we did ! They do an open-mic night first Friday night I believe in each month, sounds great, but we couldnt make it due to other commitments in March and hope to go back to see them again soon. Would recommend. Service staff and Manageress very pleasant and portions were good.

My family and I visited here for a family birthday Sunday lunch and we all thoroughly enjoyed it! It was one of the best Sunday lunches I've ever had in a pub. The beef was melt in the mouth and all the veggies and gravy were delicious. My children all enjoyed their meals and I couldn't pick any faults with anything! We had a meal voucher so it was excellent value for money but I would be happy to pay full price for the quality of food we received. It's a small village pub with friendly, attentive staff and we will definitely be returning!

I was looking to go out for a meal with a party of seven on a Sunday lunch time. I phoned around and the Half Moon in Acklam had a table available. We entered the pub and it looked a bit dated and uncared for but we hoped the food was good. Please understand that I am not trying to "have a go" but instead I am trying to provide a factual and useful review for others. The menu looked like it had been written in the seventies and we opted for what we thought would be a good option of the Sunday Roast with my wife ordering the soup. We also ordered a bottle of white wine which was pretty awful. The food arrived and my wife gave up on the soup after only 3 spoonfuls. The roasts arrived and The turkey looked very like supermarket slices and the others not much better. One small gravy boat was provided for 6 dinners but the vegetables were ok. The waitress came and asked if everything was ok and I told her that the wine was not good and the soup was unacceptable. She apologised and walked off. I don't quite know why but we thought that the desserts might be better but they weren't. When we got the bill there was no reduction in the price for the unacceptable food or wine and I have never left half a bottle of wine in a restaurant before. Totally dreadful. I would actively discourage any others from going there for a meal. Worst meal ever in a pub.

Went last Saturday evening and was very pleased with the service and food.We had a shared platter starter which was a meal in itself and then the ribeye which was cooked to perfection, and lovely flavour. The hosts were extremely pleasant and helpful and the setting in the pub was laid out very nicely. I would recommend the food there. However it is a bit of a trek to get there and in the dark could be a bit tricky for some. There is one thing the hosts could do to help, and that is to install a couple of sensor spotlights on the car park as it's pitch black at the back.

I was given a groupon voucher as a gift so we finally managed to use it last weekend. We arrived at 7pm & it was very quiet & not very warm despite the log fire.I ordered the Sunday roast with pork & my partner ordered steak & ale pie only to find there wasn't any. He ordered the special of steak & kidney pie with chips & peas instead. The pork was two thin slices that were quite fatty & the vegetables were overcooked - apart from the roast potatoes which were lovely. The parsnips appeared to have been deep fried and the gravy was lukewarm. The pie came with veg (same as the roast) instead of chips & peas which they offered to change but it would have taken too long. Nice gravy for the pie though.Overall quite disappointing after reading other reviews.
