George & Dragon in Ryedale

We ate here twice during our holiday, staying in a nearby village. Good service and the food was really good... (we both had the steaks and were happy that our 2nd visit happened to be on steak night!)

We drove into Kirbymoorside needing coffee, we spotted this has outside tables and had two extremely good coffees each with a homemade biscuit. Hit the spot - many thanks.

Whilst the meal was good, our night was spoilt by the owner who obviously has never heard of customer service. I sent back my wine as it didn't taste right. Thw owner then came through and proceeded to tell the whole restaurant that there was nothing wrong with it etc, etc. Is this really the way to treat your customer's? If our food hadn't already been served, we would have walked out.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the George and Dragon. David and Alison were the perfect hosts. Their espresso coffee is probably the best in Ryedale. Will definitely visit again.

Arrived late with my wife, but managed to get a table. Evidently it had been extremely busy and there were staff shortages. Ordered the only remaining meat, which was turkey. It arrived with roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, mashed potatoes, cabbage and broccoli. With loads of gravy. They had run out of cauliflower cheese, which was a disappointment. However, what we were served was great and was served by a lovely young but clearly harassed waitress. We will be back again to sample again as it was a good meal at a good price. Thank you.

Had a very pleasant 2 night stay at the George & Dragon. All staff very hospitable. Special mention forAli as she was always very pleasant, whatever her workload.The meals were to an excellent standard. Rooms clean. Our dog was made very welcome too. Well done to all. Recommended.

Stopped here for lunch - my husband had the most enormous ploughman's - cheese, ham, pate and gala pie with toast, bread roll, pickled onions and red onion chutney - all delicious! I had a fresh 'real' burger with delicious chips. Friendly staff and nice atmosphere.

The food is really nice and great to see something different on the menu. I had the lamb, which was so nice. Book to sit in the reasaurant, its a lovely space.

Called in on the spur of the moment after a long walk on the edge of North Yorkshire moors for a drink. While there we looked at the menu and decided to try and book a table. The staff and the manager Dean were most helpful and managed to facilitate a early booking slot. We rtn later, seated promptly the staff were attentive and friendly without being pushy at all. We both ordered the scallops followed by the Trio of lamb, the chefs really know how to present and cook , the scallops were tender and melted in the mouth served on a bed of black pudding and minted pea pura. The lamb was done to perfection, again beautiful presented. We enjoyed the the food and atmosphere so much we booked again for the following night, again the food was delicious and of the same standard. The restaurant was extremely busy but the staff were excellent and kept us informed of any delay due to the large amount of dinners attending ,All in all a fantastic place to eat with great staff who worked extremely hard to make it a thoroughly enjoyble 2 nights, will be returning soon

Only stopped for coffee. But nice coffee, splendid home made ginger biscuit (unasked for and free!) good service - so no complaints.

Visiting the area and heard good reports on food thought we would try it. We ordered the pie Bad choice was told it was chicken ham and veg pie sounded lovely,when it came it was chicken and mushroom suet pie not told it was suet, it was a load of stodge and mush no liquid in it very tastless .But chips and peas very good. wish we'd gone to the white house farm at Rosedale again which was excellent.

First night in Kirkbymoorside and booked George & Dragon. It went beyond our expectations. Table was ready in front of lovely fire in bar area. We had haggis/black pudding tower- delicious. For mains we had pork in cider and lamb. Both were presented beautifully and were consumed with delight. This was restaurant standard food at a very reasonable price. They even went the extra mile and did sausages for our 2 dogs, We had no room for pudding- perhaps next time.

The food is wonderful and decent sizes. Over 2 nights we had soup, lamb, steak, duck haggis, plum crumble, salmon and scrambled eggs, smoked haddock with poached egg. Definitely visit again, lovely base for walking. Staff very helpful and friendly. Rooms little bit dated but very clean and food, price and location is top notch

While staying in kirbymoorside we booked a table at this pub .the outside does look a little tired but once you walk in its bright clean and very welcoming. We were given a choice of table given one of our friends has dementia and we require a certain type of area . The staff were smartly dressed polite and very friendly. The decor is very good and we felt very comfortable in this covid 19 times .we were served promptly and efficiently. The request for certain items was met promptly and with no fuss .we all had different items from the menu. They all lived up to expectations. Due to the portion size none of us could manage a pudding. Really worth a visit.

We booked in advance for a table at 6:30pm, and were seated quickly in the bar area on arrival (after the obligatory hand sanitiser). It was quite quiet but that was to our liking - it did get busier through the evening, and we did feel that the tables were a little closer together than was comfortable. We were leaving shortly after the tables around us were occupied, so can't say what the staff would have done if we'd mentioned it. There were a few regulars but it didn't feel like newcomers were excluded.The food was lovely - we had soufflé (twice baked, in cheese sauce so quite rich) with chips (homemade, very nice) and salad (on the small side but fresh). Staff were attentive but not pestering. Puddings were also delicious and of a decent size.

Even when booked with confirmation and payment taken ....we didn’t get our room!I would definitely say ring and double check before setting off and been told you’ve been shoved in a hotel nearby as “these things happen”!! Very unprofessional and confrontational from us arriving and asking to check in.

Sadly a poor experience. One of the members of staff on seemed very unhappy bordering on rude with interactions with us, and we were ignored for a good 35-40 mins, raising eyebrows and amusement from the rest of the diners who could see our trouble every time we did try and catch someone’s attention, even shouting “excuse me please” after the waitress twice as she disappeared. Finally got to order, and although one steak came correctly (rare), a medium-rare came well done, further adding to our frustration of not being able to eat until a whole hour after we were seated. The payment process at the bar again was provided by a member of staff who seemed grumpy at best. Not a brilliant experience. Also, the establishment didn’t ask for or have records of attendance of its customers, something that seems remiss given the guidance from the government on 2nd July.In a nutshell, set out to help get some cash flowing back in to the local pubs, and came away very disappointed.

Booked a table for a family dinner this evening. Food was lovely, all our meals were great, but it took 1 hr 15 mins to eat. The order was lost in the kitchen, genuine error, but we were then not offered any drinks or any reduction to our bill. Such a shame, the food was really tasty and the waitress very apologetic, but not to be offered drinks while we were waiting was too much. Staff were clearly overwhelmed and owners seemed oblivious. We could see other people waiting a long time for drinks, real shambles.

Food was really good at a reasonable price for what you got service was not up to the same standard seemed to be bit of confusion whether this is due to current climate I'm not sure that being said the staff were very friendly chips were fantastic all 3 course we're delicious if we are back the area would definitely visit again.

We had a most delightful and unexpected surprise for my friend's Birthday evening meal.A pub/ hotel restaurant, The George & Dragon in Kirkbymoorside, North Yorkshire produced for us a meal of outstanding Michelin-standard Quality at mere Gastro Pub prices.Added to this was the friendly atmosphere of the restaurant and all its efficient and helpful staff.A birthday celebration to be remembered for many years to come!

Hate posting this... I live in Kirkbymoorside, a lovely town and this is the nicest pub in the town. The food and beer are good and the bar staff are lovely. It has been for sale for some time now. The owners are not in the slightest bit interested in customers enjoying their visits. You’ll hardly ever see a local in here sadly, and the reason is simply down to the owners. They are rude, abrupt and simply not welcoming. Had my last night in there tonight after being told off for moving a table 2 feet! (until it’s sold on).

We were in Kirbymoorside for a weekend break and ate twice at the George & Dragon, hubby loved the steak & stilton pie so much he had it both times! I had the haddock/ scampi mix which was very nice and then the sea bass which was beautiful with a fab creamy sauce and fresh veg. Big portions but did manage a pud which was very nice too. The staff and locals were all very friendly and we could take our dog in with us ( always a bonus) would always go back if we were in the area

Me and my partner visited Kirkbymoorside on the 7th December 2019. We asked our B&B of any nice places to go for an evening meal where we were advised the George and Dragon as the food is always lovely.... which it was. Both me and my partner thoroughly enjoyed the food so hats off to the chefs. However, the reason I have given an average rating is because the staff were incredibly rude from making the initial phone call to book a table..... when we arrived the waitress had a booking for us but no name, to which the waitress asked a colleague who's reply was whilst looking directly at me "I couldn't understand him" which I both me and my partner thought was rude. We were then sat down to eat where the service during pour meal was ok, I guess but wouldn't visit again. When we came to pay our bill at the bar I was asked if I was paying by card or cash which couldn't have looked more of an inconvenience for the waitress if she tried. She then asked me if I was leaving a tip as she needed to put it into the machine before progressing. (I've been to enough places and paid by card to know that the machine should have been handed over at that point for the customer to decide) My response was obviously a no as I felt it was rude and we both felt like an inconvenience from arrival.Summary:Food: Brilliant!Staff: Big fat no, find somewhere else to eat.

Visited for dinner with my wife and adult daughter. Menu sounded very good, and the venue seemed pleasant enough. The waitress took our food order but forgot to enquire whether we would like a drink before / with dinner. We actually had to ask her !When asked what the soup of the day was she said she wasn't sure. !! ..didnt even offer to find out !I ordered the steak pie and my wife and duaghter ordered the duck. The steak pie was terrible. The crust was rock hard and the mash had clearly been microwaved. The skin on it gave that away. The gravy also had a skin on it and came out as a warm lump. The duck and vegetables were all well over cooked. We were so disappointed with the food that we actually paid the (£90) bill and left without finishing it. We even left the half empty bottle of wine, such was our disappointment with the quality.

As a local kirkbymoorside resident the george and dragon is our regular place to dine the food is always of a good standard with fresh produce cooked well ,on thursday evening Steak Night is a popular night with locals and tourists and it is well worth making a reservation ,the puddings are all homemade and delicious if you can manage it ,very friendly owners and staff,Worth a visit if in the area.

Called in without a booking and were found a table even though very busy. The food was good but a little over- seasoned. Service was excellent.

Lovely food, generous portions and plenty of choice I had the steak and stilton pie which was delicious with a lovely crispy crust. It came with a pile of fluffy mashed potato, peas and gravy. I did struggle to eat it all as it was such a large portion. Possibly not the cheapest place to eat but definitely great quality and value for money.

Our first stay in Kirkbymoorside was at this ex old coaching inn. We stayed in a superior double room with walk in shower on the first floor overlooking the garden and car park. The room itself was very comfortable and we both slept very well. The break was intended to be a respite from the tribulations of a house move and sure enough, we were able to relax and enjoy some peace and quiet. The first meal we had was on the first evening of our stay and consisted of haddock and chips for my wife and sirloin steak and chips for me. Both meals were well cooked with good quality ingredients and were a joy to eat. The wine list is fairly comprehensive and will suit the majority of pallets. The breakfasts were also on the same level of quality as the evening meals. No complaints whatsoever.It must be said that the staff throughout the hotel were absolutely amazing and nothing was too much trouble. Everything they did was done with a smile and a will to please. All in all, we had a very pleasant and enjoyable stay and without any hesitation, we can say that we will be back at the first opportunity. Well done all.

Brilliant service, excellent food, We had the offer of either the bar or the main restaurant. Everything on the menu looked great & certainly would encourage trying the haggis & black pudding for starters. The Henry Lamb was perfectly cooked as the main. Look forward to visiting again.

On passing we saw that it was steak night and quite good value so we went and enjoyed a good meal there

It started badly when sullen waitress asked us to move to a smaller table in case she got a large group, fair enough but place was empty and lots of tables available, husbands beer, a pint of local Howardian was poor, he sent it back she kept saying ‘I do apologise’ in a tone that meant otherwise. Husband an official beer taster at festivals knows a duff pint. His Next pint Timothy Taylor was reasonable. I asked how big the fish on one of their smaller plates was she said it’s how it comes! No answer. Chose the larger one, batter very thick fish very thin chips ok. Husband had small portion of scampi and chips which was fine. Locals seem to take over part of pub which is great we all need locals supporting their pub, but one lady was talking so loudly about getting wasted the night before we could hear her across the pub, drove us mad, doesn’t normally bother me but she was so loud it wasn’t funny.

An old Georgian coaching house with beams, etc. & lots of character with modern comforts. We had a very comfortable bed and slept well in this quiet location. The bathroom was clean with good toiletries but the temperature of the shower fluctuated according to the number of other users in surrounding rooms. Oooh! Oooh! Aaah!

Lovely pub, great breakfast, lovely staff, what more do you need.

Staying in the local area for an evening and decided to give this place a try. The pint of Wainright Golden Ale was lovely, well kept beer! The Farm Yard Burger I had was absolutely delicious, I would say one of the nicest beer patty’s I’ve ever had. I added cheese to the burger and it was great. Certainly would recommend this place for food! Staff were friendly and very helpful.

Visited with family on vacation. Excellent quality locally sourced food. Great service. Will be back

Needed lunch while travelling & found this which sounded ok.

We were staying nearby and needed an evening meal. It had been suggested we visit here but were warned portions were big! Initially we looked into the Knights Restaurant but found it to be empty so retreated to the bar where a charming member of staff said we could eat in the bar area or the restaurant. We chose the bar and had a lovely table by the window. We ordered drinks while browsing the menu - not extensive but a good choice available. The order was taken by a friendly waitress and then we didn't have to wait too long for our order to be served. The steak was cooked to perfection with excellent chips while the lamb shank to was delicious. The waitress was attentive but not overly so. We were offered the dessert menu but were too full from the main course (we had been warned - Yorkshire portions we were told afterwards!). All in all the dining experience was fine, all the staff we met were friendly and the atmosphere pleasant. No hesitation recommending visiting for a meal here.

we spent 4 nights here, hosts and staff, were absolutely lovely, a true Yorkshire welcome. Our room was very comfortable in the old mill conversion across the lovely courtyard. The bar is great to sit and have a drink or two nice atmostphere, the resturant is also very good, and Yorkshire breakfast to die for egg 2 bacon sausage, toms beans mushrooms and black pud. toast,orange juice cereals fruit choice is endless and all in the price excellent service with a smile. We simply loved it and will return as we have still got sights we wish to see and we just love the area and the people. Thankyou to you all for alovely stay in your county.

This was a great hotel in the middle of the town. We were given room 8 which was a great room also the breakfast was ample and the restaurant provided excellent food

I have eaten here before and the food was very good, a few weeks ago 4 of us reserved for the restaurant mid week, we were put into the bar/ dining area.

A wonderfull no-nonsense place to stay for a night or more, combining true hospitality, good comfortable rooms and excellent cuisine. We had a superior dinner with top quality beef and excellent Italian and French wines and a superb English breakfast in the morning before leaving for the most beautiful moors just nearby.

The choice on the menu is huge including two vegan options!! The quality of the food is unimaginable....my Mom could not have done it better. The portions are huge but the quality is maintained. The service from the friendly and helpful staff makes it a home from home. I will be back

Good food, well presented in a very pleasant restaurant. The staff were friendly. We had a very enjoyable evening. Would not hesitate to eat here again.

If your are a genuine foodie and understand food, they please avoid this place! The food is poor, badly presented and nowhere near good standards of fine dining gastro pubs. That asides, what made our experience terrible is the attitude and feeble customer service demonstrated by the owners and their team. Not a happy place.

We have given this pub 3 or 4 chances. Visiting Kirkbymoorside regularly we often eat in local establishments. This place stands out as being by far the worst customer service we have come across. We have previously visited and had not recieved great customer service but thought we would give it another. Today we tried to book a table. Granted this was for a Saturday night and we went in to the bar to book at around 11am. However, we were made to feel totally unwelcome as if our custom didn’t matter. They did not even try to accommodate us making us feel stupid that anywhere would accommodate us on a Saturday night. How wrong they were. The Kings Head 100yards down the road were more than accommodating and we have just had an excellent meal. Please read our review of the Kings Head!

I did think the price of fish and chips at nearly £14 each was expensive, and not that good. Had far better at fish and chip shop.

Food was great, atmosphere was good and managed to get a table for 5 as a walk in! Was a bit noisy, but there was a wedding reception happening.

Stopped for Sunday lunch and wasn’t disappointed! Me and my husband both opted for the beef roast, portion size was good and very tasty. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. Staying nearby for the week and will definitely be back.

Such a pleasant surprise to discover an interesting range of fish and meat dishes and the best vegan sausages ever!

We met up with several pals from my schooldays with their partners for a weekend and decided to eat here on the Friday as we were booked elsewhere for the Saturday. The menu had a reasonable selection and the food was well cooked when it was served. For a small place they had a good wine list without the usual "bottled in the UK" industrial stuff. We were all quite impressed with both the service and the quality.

My wife and I visited for dinner on a Sunday but did not have a good experience. The food was poor and there was only one member of staff on duty trying to attend to six or seven tables.

One of a few village pubs, the George & Dragon provides a warm welcome with a fine range of hand pulled ales to suit my pallet and other drinkers equally well catered for. A very friendly atmosphere, good staff and a perfect place for a lunchtime couple, an afternoon dabble or an evening session. Recommended.

We had an evening meal in the restaurant. It has nicely spaced tables, not too close together and the background music is not too loud or intrusive. There are linen table cloths and napkins on all the tables, which is quite unusual these days, but welcome! The menu had a good balance of dishes to suit most tastes. I was struggling to decide what to chose. My husband had a black pudding starter followed by local roast pheasant and I had the crab thermidor followed by syrup pudding. Delicious on all counts!

We walked into the George and Dragon after a 20 minute walk in the rain on a cold February evening. We sat at a table near the real fire next to the bar. The interior was very clean and attractive.

The hotel was once an old coaching inn one assumes and is in the main street. Market day is certainly on a Wednesday with vendors up this street. Rooms have been upgraded and are quite comfortable. WIFI is available free as one would expect

I checked into the family room for Two nights (Room 12) I was told the price was £130.00pn the room had a double and Two single beds, the TV was the size of a postage stamp and very dated.

Booked two family rooms one was a family room the other was a double room with a terrible camp bed the room was more then half the size but the same price. Did mention that it was unfair that we were charged the same but it wasn’t even noted. We were Interrogated at breakfast by the miserable landlady as to why we hadn’t eaten the previous evening. Definitely not somewhere we will be staying again

Lovely pub grub. Nice setting and the staff are very good and very happy to help. Also great for just popping in for a quick pint or 3.

A friend and I went for their steak night. The food was really good the service was good. It is a nice atmosphere and a comfy place to have drinks before and after a meal.

Un típico hotel antiguo, con suelos que crujen y suelos ondulados - bonito!

Nos recomendaron el George and Dragon por ser propietario y ser en Kirkby Mills. Decidimos comer en el bar aunque nos ofrecieron una mesa en el restaurante. Buena comida de pub con porciones muy bueno.

Organizamos un precio para nuestro grupo y mientras una o dos personas preguntaron por las habitaciones de la planta baja, porque de dificultad con escaleras, no hay ninguna mención de un cargo extra. Cuando llegó la hora de salir de tiempo, la casera intentaron cobrar a las personas extra por la habitación les habían dado, aunque las habitaciones deluxe de no había sido solicitada. Al final desistió, pero he de decir que no fue con buena gracia. No me cobran extra por mi habitación 1 piso pero había pedido si podía llevar a mi perro y habían dicho que estaba bien. El día después de llegar a casa, la casera llamó para decir que ella me había olvidado cobrarme 15 libras para mi perro. Cuando me dijo que ella no había mencionado absolutamente sin duda un cargo para el perro, dijo que ella debe haber hecho porque ella siempre lo hace. Ella no. Lo pagué pero dejó un sabor desagradable. En general, la comida era buena, el personal era encantador, pero por desgracia jóvenes relaciones al cliente la casera y habilidades de comunicación dejaba mucho que desear.

If you are looking for a great place to stay with or without a dog this is the place.great food, great company and a very comfortable place to sleep.

Just had a one night stop in the G & D(Not the first time)and just feel a bit let down this time , we arrived Saturday tea time and asked if we wanted a table to eat which we said yes please would 8 be ok to which we got no problem.Went to the bar about 6.30 and it seemed very busy but thought no more of it , got to 8 and nobody had seen us so enquired at the bar when our table would be ready and it was so we were shown to our table, ok so far(in the mean time as we left our table in the bar somebody who walked in off the street was shown to this table).Then at 8.30 we enquired if we could have a menu so the alarm bells were ringing , the menu turned up a couple on mins later , then 5 mins later the waitress turned up to take our orders and told us that half the menu was off but it was 8.30 on a Saturday(didn`t they know who was booked in) so ok a quck look again we ordered(we didn`t want her to go away for another 30 mins)and there were a few more people waiting for food/plates to be cleared away. The starters turned up about 9.10 and to be fair we all enjoyed them so we thought back on track , the mains turned up about 9.40 ish(by then we were the last people in there)so as they turned up we ordered another round of drinks , finished our meals by about 9.55 oops where were are the drinks you guessed it still on the bar!(remember the table we left in the bar by 9 O`clock they had eaten and left the G & D)so we asked what was going on and a lady(I presume the mangeress)told us they had been a chef down so that was the reason for the delay(so when they took the orders why not say this then?) , when asked about the drinks she didn`t know what to say but she was too busy taking the table cloths off the table to worry about us so we presumed they didn`t have a desert menu but to be fair the food was very nice just a shame about the service but if this how they treat returning guests I think something needs looking into.Regarding the rooms I think they are slowly doing work,in our room(room 10)the bathroom had been done but the actual bedroom was very tired and in our friends room(room 11)the bathroom had not been done and this room was also very tired(in the bathroom there was just a shower head to hold to wash your head and a leaking toilet).The breakfast was ok but nothing spectacular(I have had a lot better)you expect proper butchers sausage and bacon when in the country and you got a thin sausage that bearly had two bites in it and it just didn`t seem good quality(think proper butter not small square packets etc) .All in all I think they need to look at a few things because they charge enough(we paid £90.00 a room)and class them selves as 4 star , compared to some places we stay that are classed as three stars the G & D doesn`t hold a candle to them its a shame because the food in the restaurant is nice , where it is situated is great for walking but until they try and be a bit more customer friendly and renovate(the rooms have not changed in 10 years)I will not be returning

We were on holiday in the area for Valentine's Day so had not booked anywhere to have a meal - luckily the George & Dragon had plenty of availability in the restaurant, and surprisingly were offering both the set valentine's menu and the normal a la carte menu. We chose to eat from the standard menu, both opting for pheasant in peppercorn sauce.The service was exemplary and the layout of the restaurant was beautiful. For the both of us, 2 courses and 2 drinks came to less than £45 which on Valentines Day seems like extraordinary value.All the staff were incredibly helpful and friendly - would certainly visit again if in the area.

Generally I prefer more down to earth, ordinary pubs - but this one is actually OK.Quite simply the George and Dragon is a very smart pub. They clearly major on the food side of the business but the bar area is still a pleasant place for a quiet pint.Service is exceptionally smart and is also friendly and welcoming.It's not the sort of place I'd choose for a session with mates, but it's a pleasant place for a quiet pint.

Great atmosphere, friendly service.Beer was excellent.Proper homemade Yorkshire pub grub, massive portions of perfectly cooked food. I had the steak and stilton pie. A generous wedge of homemade pie, crammed with tender steak and mushrooms. Served with chips, peas and gravy. My wife had the gammon with two eggs.Both were delicious.What's not to like?

3 couples went for a evening out, it was a saturday night but not too busy,The beer was good , and a good selection,The food was excellent , we all had a main cource and a desert, everyone loved it and we all said we would come again,

Dropped in without booking on a Friday night and had a good meal - fish pie is recommended. Local beer was good. Dogs are allowed in the bar.

Five of us booked in here for our evening meal on a busy Saturday evening. Although our table wasn't ready when we arrived, this wasn't a problem as we were able to have a pre-meal drink and choose our meal whilst waiting in the bar area. Plenty of choices on the menu and I was especially pleased to see that there was a separate vegetarian menu - and that some thought had gone into it, offering more than the usual veggie options provided by many other pub restaurants. We all enjoyed our food and the three members of staff who served at our table couldn't be faulted. Helpful, pleasant and patient when we wanted slight changes to what was offered on the menu and whilst we decided what we wanted to drink. It's a shame that the same cannot be said of the owner/manager who seemed to think that her 'back office' was more important than serving her customers at the bar - hence only 4 stars - but don't let this put you off. She could learn a lot from her team. Once this hurdle was overcome though we thoroughly enjoyed our evening at the George and Dragon.

I found the meal disappointing and the meal description was misleading. The fish dish I had was haddock and salmon pieces in a sauce and was described as having a parmesan crust but just had melted cheese on the top and the it was smoked haddock which was very salty.

Limited menu of locally sourvced meat, fish and seafood with veggie option, deliciously cooked to order and far from being outrageously expensive. Full English breakfast would satisfy a trencherman.

Went for a meal in the bar. Plenty to eat, good range except for desserts (the frozen lemon Eton Mess is a bit metallic and doesn't taste of much) and its a long time since the menu changed. Same menu in bar or restaurant.

After a busy day sightseeing in York, we couldn't be bothered cooking so decided to eat out - a very good decision!!!We both opted for the steak and stilton pie, expecting the normal "adequate" portion - not a bit of it!!!! We got presented with a large plate brimming with a huge portion of pie, veg and potatoes!! The stilton and steak worked so well together and we soon had 2 extremely clean plates (OK, our springer spaniel also benefitted from some bits fed to her and she also approved).This place was so good we returned 2 nights later and this time I also indulged in the cheese board for desert. They could put several other places to shame with the quality and quantity of cheeses, biscuits and fruit that they provided. Will definitely return next time we are on holiday in the area.

Unfortunately The George has had some staff changes this year, however, that has NOT reflected on the friendliness of the staff who remain or those who have recently joined them. Good range of beers from the bar, good menu of Northern portion pub grub.This establishment is a good all round, hotel, eatery, bar, and local pub.

Great food, hard working staff and good value. Slept well and will be going back. Chris bar manager and lady looking after the hotel as managers on holiday were a credit to the place. Nothing too much trouble. Only negative was the scrambled eggs, plentiful but dry.

We had dinner here on Saturday of the bank holiday weekend. There weren't a lot of places in the area that had any availability, but the friendly staff found a table for us without having a reservation. Given that we merely found this place by fluke, our expectations weren't high, but now this has to be one of the best places I have eaten at in the UK. Our entire evening for two cost £60, this included drinks, mains and desserts, and coffees to finish. The food was absolutely delicious, and worth it to take a bit of a drive out of your way to have dinner here. I had the duck for main, and my husband, the lamb shank. For dessert we enjoyed Chocolate Orange tart and cheesecake. The food was perfectly prepared, well-balanced, and more than worth the price we paid for it. The chef here is great and deserves any recognition that may come their way. It was a busy night, but each plate got the attention it deserved and staff are friendly and very attentive. I would highly recommend dinner here.

Welcoming, friendly and helpful staff. Food was excellent and generous portions Well worth a visit. They have the same menu for both the bar and restaurant. The menu offered a really good choice. Can get busy early on as they stop serving mid afternoon and start again at 6pm on a Sunday

Great food and large portions the room was clean and nothing was to much trouble for the friendly staff, would love to visit again.

There was a good choice of food and wines as well as a well-stocked bar. The three of us all had the slow cooked lamb shanks, which were excellent. The Cabernet Sauvignon accompanied it very well.

We booked this hotel in June for 2 nights but day before arrival was told we could only have one night but as we had already booked tickets on the NYMR we had to book elsewhere for our second night. The staff where very nice and breakfast and dinner where lovely. Now I know that this was a travelzoo deal and we probably got the short straw because off this but their was no offer of compensation and was then charged a £20 accommodation fee for our troubles which we thought was taking the p--s.

The breakfasts are really good. Try a kipper perhaps. The evening meals are excellent. One main course was more than enough for me.

George and dragon Is a lovely pub with friendly staff that serves good quality food. Prices top end for a pub and whilst food is good, I don't think it quite matches prices.

Great food, great staff, disappointing bedroom which was rather small and we could hear every noise from adjoining rooms.

The George and Dragon is our local pub. It always offers a warm and friendly welcome. They offer a brilliant drinks selection and also have a fantastic wine selection. The food that is offered is genuinely amazing. All in all if your in the area it is worth every penny stopping here for lunch/ dinner and a drink. You will not be disappointed

Food here is very good and the service is quick and efficient, we thought is was a bit overpriced. £15!for a burger seems a bit much.Desserts were good though.

Very friendly service, with good timing. We found the helpings to be very large! If they gave us less for the same price, we could have eaten a sweet, and end up paying more!

We had two evening meals. Same menu both nights, no specials. Quite expensive for what was offered although tasty and well presented.

Main meals good value for money, sweets where expensive for the portion size. surroundings where very comfortable.

Excellent food and good service, quite pricey but worth it for the odd treat, have been a few times and will always go back.
