From the welcome as we arrived to the last spoonful of pudding this was one of the best Sunday lunches we’ve had for some time. Beautifully slow cooked tasty beef, great veggies, home roast potatoes and Yorkshires - the rhubarb pannacotta was perfection - and hubby’s sticky toffee pudding disappeared so fast I didn’t get a taste! Fantastic setting, lovely walks down to the river and ruins. Faultless!

I dined here with my parents on Thursday evening and had the loveliest experience. Matt and his team were very welcoming, took time to make sure we were comfortable, assisting with menu choices and arranging water and treats for our doggie diner. The dinner menu was full of tempting choices making it difficult to pick. Lovely traditional pub staples but each elevated to make them extra special, alongside other mouthwatering options. The choices we had were delicious, totally faultless, cooked to perfection. Nothing was too much trouble for the very attentive and lovely staff. In all, one of the nicest dining experiences I’ve had in quite some time.

Visited this place yesterday evening. Have been before but yesterday’s experience was the worst ever! It was very quiet for a Saturday evening but in spite of the fact there were only a few people there, the service was slow and inattentive to say the least! There were quite a few staff but they seemed to be mainly young and inexperienced, and appeared to have had little to no training whatsoever! When first attempting to take our order, we were barked at ‘Do you know what you want yet?’ - an unbelievable lack of manners or basic politeness. The table we sat at hadn’t been cleaned and no one attempted to clean it after we’d sat down. We had to ask a few times for tap water before it arrived. When the starters eventually arrived, we had no cutlery or napkin. The cutlery arrived later after we’d asked for it, but we had to ask again for a napkin - you would think this would have been included with the cutlery, but apparently not! The starters themselves were OK but no more than that. We were sitting for a good 40-45mins with our dirty plates and glasses in front of us before anyone thought to come & clear away & before the mains arrived, even though staff were walking past all the time. When the mains arrived, again, no one had thought to bring cutlery beforehand, and we had to wait for someone to bring it (again!!) The food itself was pretty good but mine was tepid. No one thought to ask if the food was OK until we’d practically finished. The ambience of the place wasn’t great.. a pub for locals (which is fine) but a lot of swearing at the bar, which let’s face it, if you’ve gone out for a quiet meal you don’t want to be subjected to. When we complained about the less than satisfactory service, they did at least remove the service charge from the bill, but we won’t ever be coming back here! Another point was that the menu advertised on their website was completely different to the one on offer, so they basically hadn’t been bothered to update this. Difficult if you have any food allergies/intolerances as you can’t plan in advance if anything will be suitable for you. I have a food intolerance, and no questions were asked about this when we ordered our food - I actually thought this was a legal requirement now??! A real shame as it’s in a lovely setting (especially in spring/summer), but they charge high prices for a budget level of service.. they really need to sort their staff out if they want to survive as a foodie pub.

Great Sunday Lunch at the Stone Trough today. We had pre-booked and had advised them that we would have two dogs with us. We all received a really warm welcome and were shown to our table where a water bowl and dog treats were waiting for our dogs - needless to say, they really loved that! We both opted for the roast beef and we weren’t disappointed. Two clean plates said it all; it was absolutely delicious - good portion size and good mix of fresh, seasonable vegetables (the cauliflower cheese is some of the best I’ve had!). The general manager, Matt, creates a welcoming atmosphere and the pub has a relaxed feel to it. We’ll definitely be back. Keep up the good work!

We had roast beef and roast pork. The beef very nice, the pork was just OK (very fatty lacked flavour). The veg was very good and well cooked. £21 for roast beef or pork was on the upper shelf of prices for pub grub Sunday lunch. The bill had 10% auto added which always annoys me anywhere I go. The menu does not show the price, only the price for two courses or three not the main course. Dogs are welcome at this place👍. Pleasant staff serving on.

It's a shame I'm having to put a negative review but the service was pretty much non existent from the get go. We walked in as a family of three (me, partner and 3yr old) we had one of the staff members who wasn't actually on shift come over to take our order as he could see us sat twiddling thumbs. To cut it short we waited a long time for food then we almost finished our meals by the time we got the sauce we asked for when given our meals, then we asked to see a dessert menu and it never came. Asked again to see it, still sat waiting and our daughter was getting tired and we was abit frustrated with the fact we also had two dogs on the opposite table yapping at our daughter because they are anxious around kids. Overall not a friendly, helpful experience, food was okay, won't be returning unfortunately 🙄 we had to request the service charge be knocked off at the end since it was non existent!

We went to the Stonetrough Inn for a bite of lunch after a lovely weekend in Helmsley. Having been there several times before we we confident it would be a good choice! We couldn't have been more wrong. We were the first in and the staff member although polite was clearly not ready for service. We ordered a ploughman's for 2 to share which took ages to come and was the worst ploughman's we've ever had. It seemed like it was put together of bits left over from the weekend. Roast Beef does not belong and the bread was greasy focassia and there was no chutney included. It was served on a board but no side plates so difficult to eat. The chips were nice though. I read other reviews prior to our visit stating good disabled access as I have a bad knee but couldn't see how this was possible as steps down into the pub then very steep step down into bar and sitting area and the toilets were up steps and the handrail had broken off the wall. Such a shame it should be a great pub in fabulous setting!

Welcoming, accessible, and accommodating. Lovely green setting in the countryside. Perfect to go for a meal and drinks, or as a stop on a walk or cycle ride. 4 of us enjoyed a generous portion of roast dinner and a tasty dessert each: good food, that didn't cost the earth. A dog and a wheelchair were both warmly welcomed, when booking, as well as on arrival. One of my friends suffers from occasional seizures (epilepsy adjacent). When this happened (between main course and dessert), the staff could not have been more supportive. Without making any fuss, they quietly checked in with us to ask how they could help, offering a few proactive ideas (a glass of cold water, and opening a window). They also offered to postpone delivery of our desserts until after the seizure had passed - even though this meant remaking the vegan dessert. Vegan and gluten free options available, albeit with limited options during busy Sunday lunch service (very understandable).

We'd been cycling at Dalby forest so did a pub search on the south side of the A64 to call into on the way home and went with the Stone Trough Inn. What a find! We had no reservation but the staff were fantastic and accommodated without hesitation. We both went with the 2 course option from the Sunday menu and it's a good feed; 3 courses would have been uncomfortably full. The food was great and the service was superb. Major props to our young waiter, Luke, who was conversational, impeccably well mannered and a good laugh. The cherry on top was the manager catching us on the way out to wish us well and remembering our names. A small thing, but one is those details that goes a long way.

We had to go and get extra coats out of the car and we all wore them throughout the whole meal. Definitely not the cosy pub vibes we were hoping for. Not very child friendly. We had a few children with us and there was no option for them other than Sunday lunch which they would not eat. The food was lovely but the service was chaotic and rather stressful. Beautiful building, nicely furnished, lovely staff. Food was a little disappointing tbh. My starter of ham hock and piccalilli was excellent. The main roast beef, etc, was OK. The roasties tasted like reheats or that they'd stood for a while. The other veg were OK, and even though the sprouts were mush, they were delicious. Beef was tender and plentiful. I then had a poached pear, which was so flavourless it was depressing. There was supposed to have a "deconstructed crumble" vibe to it. The 'crumble' element had had a conversation with done spices but decided they weren't friends. More cinnamon, ginger, and even vanilla may have saved the dish. But alas not. I feel a proper crumble would have been better. Having said that, other people's desserts looked fabulous, and few were left.

Nice place. Unfortunately the waiting staff ruined the experience for us. It took for a lady (who clearly worked there but was on her day off with her dog) sat having her dinner to tell the staff that we were finished after waiting almost ten minutes for our starters to be cleared. (By pointing at us) And then again with our mains. They were all far too involved with chatting at the bar and getting spoons to share a dessert plate with each other, they were not attentive at all, this is the reason I removed your service charge which usually, I am very generous with. To add to this, whilst I was sat eating my starter, I received a call from a staff member to ask why I was late for my booking …. I was 25minutes early and he had not recognised we were there. Have visited here previously and never disappointed but did think the standard of food had gone down a little , we had Sunday lunch and was disappointed of only beef or chicken on the menu apart from a vegetarian option, it was nicely cooked and hot and vegetable selection good. The desert was supposed to be a lemon and fruit pavlova but was basically a meringue nest with frozen summer fruits and a drizzle of lemon sauce and cream not like the previous deserts we have had before . My main criticism was very poor disabled facilities, sloping carpark covered in gravel with no designated parking area for disabled near entrance.Only toilet facilities were up 4 steps which made it impossible for my 91 year old mother unable to access the facilties I notice previous complaints about disabled access poor on reviews but clearly nothing has been addressed. Really need to look at these issues before I would choose to recommend or go back.

The wellington, in comparison to the amount of beef/ chicken the others got was a very small portion for the same set menu price, maybe halved of a full one and not particularly full of its filling. Lovely country pub with covered extension on the side for diners. Has plenty of outside tables too. Overlooking the valley and with a skyline of pine trees Lovely surroundings. Just a stones throw from Kirkham Abbey. Food plentiful and tasty, not too expensive. We had Sunday lunch, tender meat and Lovely veg. Dessert was heavenly. Large car park, dog friendly and room for kids to play. Very good service, you felt looked after. Will call again

Good portions of food.... in some cases. Very limited options on the Sunday lunch menu, ordered the beef lunch and it came with a fair portion of meat and yorkshire pudding, but very little on behalf of the other components of the meal. The only vegetable i was provided with was less than half a carrot and 2 pieces of roast potato. Thankfully we ordered a starter of cauliflower cheese (which was delicious). For pudding we got the sticky toffee pudding, which was a good portion and one of the best desserts I have ever ordered in a restaurant, highly recommend it. Staff were a bit disorganised but friendly, atmosphere was lovely, very nice decoration.

Very warm and inviting (and dog friendly) welcome when we arrived. Service was impeccable. Food was amazing. We had the special soup of the day which was local asparagus and wild garlic. I'd advise you don't miss the chance to sample this delight due to the short life of locally sourced asparagus and wild garlic as it truly is scrumptious. The burger bomb and gluten free battered fish was equally amazing (had with gluten free battered onion rings). Portion sizes were not at all stingy and very well priced. The pub is a little off the beaten track but so so worth the short trip to get there. Will definitely visit again when we are next up this way.

The menu was not a traditional pub menu, there was no specials on board. The sweet menu was little choice. Would recommend the fried fish, it is massive but the chips spoilt it there were frozen. My Dad went to bar for drinks, and there was about 3 people behind bar doing nothing and ignored my dad at first till he said something. Will not be going back.

We went to the stone trough inn for Sunday lunch. The views from the restaurant are are beautiful, the staff are friendly and attentive and the food was delicious. They even went out of their way to make us a gluten free veggie option with extra sides, which I really appreciated.

Excellent in every way. The Sunday roast was the best roast beef dinner I have had in a pub. Excellent value. And the staff were friendly and attentive at the right time.

Seven of us had Sunday lunch today and we all enjoyed the food and lovely service. The menu is quite limited on a Sunday but there was something to suit all our tastes. Grandma could have done with a steak knife to cut her huge Yorkshire but that was our fault for not asking. Good communication to warn us about the bridge closure and to confirm our booking of an extra guest.

From the moment I stepped into the hotel it was a piece of heaven. Tony and his wife are perfect hosts. Great sense of humour from Tony. Wonderful food and wine expertly chosen by Tony for us, and lovely service from Sally. A memorable stay even though it was 1 night. Great walking around.Thankyou. Julie.

Stayed for two nights. Staff great gave a lovely welcome to a gorgeous Vintage room. Cosy, clean and spacious. Bath, shower and super comfy beds. Weather was beautiful, enjoyed sitting outside our room in the sunshine listening to the peace and quiet. A delicious dinner on the first night, and it was really delicious! All was fabulous, topped off with a mouthful watering Bergamot Sorbet, yum! Location perfectly central, close to the railway station and castle. Great Indian restaurant across the road, dined there on the second night. For chocolate lovers, try the Birdgate Chocolatier, a couple of doors down. Parking easy and EV charging available. Great Yorkshire hospitality!

Sunday night stay, room 10 which is top floor at the back. Probably the best hotel stay I've had, slept so well. Rooms are spot on, for £50 a night it's an absolute bargain. Evening meal was lovely, excellent beer. Breakfast again a wide choice and very very nice. Would give this place 6 stars if possible. 😊
