Very warm and inviting (and dog friendly) welcome when we arrived. Service was impeccable. Food was amazing. We had the special soup of the day which was local asparagus and wild garlic. I'd advise you don't miss the chance to sample this delight due to the short life of locally sourced asparagus and wild garlic as it truly is scrumptious. The burger bomb and gluten free battered fish was equally amazing (had with gluten free battered onion rings). Portion sizes were not at all stingy and very well priced. The pub is a little off the beaten track but so so worth the short trip to get there. Will definitely visit again when we are next up this way.

The menu was not a traditional pub menu, there was no specials on board. The sweet menu was little choice. Would recommend the fried fish, it is massive but the chips spoilt it there were frozen. My Dad went to bar for drinks, and there was about 3 people behind bar doing nothing and ignored my dad at first till he said something. Will not be going back.

Seven of us had Sunday lunch today and we all enjoyed the food and lovely service. The menu is quite limited on a Sunday but there was something to suit all our tastes. Grandma could have done with a steak knife to cut her huge Yorkshire but that was our fault for not asking. Good communication to warn us about the bridge closure and to confirm our booking of an extra guest.

Drinks were flat (cola) burger was raw and I like my meat pink informed them but the male server didn't even apologise or recognise the issue. A cold experience. Would expect in a country pub on a cold wet April day a log fire lit, especially with logs stacked at the side of the fire. Some guests were heard saying it was cold, putting their coat's back on before food arrived.

I've visited here several times over the years but our latest visit (since the arrival of new management!) was special. My husband and I took our little dog out for a walk on Boxing Day and wanted to follow it up with a few quiet drinks at the pub. Alex and Shannon were only too happy to welcome us and the atmosphere was lovely, with locals and off-duty members of staff all chatting and supping together. The pub was decorated so festively and it looked great. They allow dogs and our young pup was fussed and treated like a queen. (The pub dog Tweed is a very good boy.) We passed several very happy hours relaxing in the bar and are eager to return to try out the food menu! Come here if you like good old-fashioned pubs with a crackling fire, friendly staff and what looks like a delicious new menu. You'll get a warm welcome!

Good service. Cozy setting. Steak was medium rare as requested but the Himalayan style steak was I think a Rump steak and didn't taste like a Prime cut or anything special. A bit noisy at the bar from a group of lads drinking loudly so we moved to a quieter area of the restaurant so we could talk with my husband but could still hear them in the background. Nice tranquil surroundings, though the carpark is awkward for motorcycles, being on a hill and covered in gravel. Cramped up inside, spacewise. Popped in yesterday for a drink at the end of a walk. Lovely exterior. On entering, it is clearly, erm, "aspirational". Bar staffed entirely by youngsters. One on phone taking a booking, one drying glasses, clearly too young to serve & one guy taking payment for a party's meal. When he finished, he turned to the till & started messing about with bits of paper while several folk were at the bar waiting for service. When I said "excuse me?" he turned & regarded me with a gormless gaze. "Can we have some drinks please?" Despite the fact that no one was serving at that time, he grumpily pointed out that HE was tidying up the till area and wasn't actually on serving duty. He resentfully served us, making it clear that customers were an inconvenience to his working day. So all the customers can stand & wait & wait while you tidy up bits of paper? 🤣🤣 If you're trying to be a high end pub - employ staff interested in hospitality.

The Stone Trough is such a friendly place, especially for dogs - he was served water before we got our drinks…! We all (not the dog) had roast beef Sunday lunch which was excellent. Advertised as slow cooked and the meat was tender and tasty, very satisfying compared to some places I have been to recently. Potatoes and gravy were also top stuff, though the Yorkies were a bit flat. For desserts, which are generous, sticky toffee pudding was the standout choice, and the Eton Mess was original with basil and black pepper - it worked very well with the usual ingredients. Other menu items looked interesting and worth another visit. We were served by Bee who was most attentive and professional at all times. This one is going into my diary.

Just had an absolutely dreamy Sunday lunch. Sat in the orangery in the sunshine and breeze and was in heaven for an hour or two. Delicious roast beef and sides (fabulous cauliflower cheese!) and amazing desserts, we tried them all between the whole of our group. We left very happy indeed. Thank you.

Marvellous views in a rather inert conservatory with tinny background music playing like a kazoo. The waitress didn't know how to read the table and kept interrupting to see if everything was OK. There was no wine list and unbelievably no champagne only prosseco she...

I had my wedding here at the end of May and couldn’t have been happier with the service, food and surroundings. Matt and his team went above and beyond to ensure we had a relaxing and enjoyable day. They were so helpful with setting up decorations and even blacking out a room for our baby to nap in. They were super friendly, made us feel completely at ease and even our guests were remarking how wonderful they all were. We had booked the venue completely blind, having never set foot in the pub, and I’m so glad we did. The food was really exceptional. I’m vegetarian, so it was important they got that side of things right too. You could tell they put thought into the flavour combinations as well as textures. I hear the meat and fish courses were also delicious (the Yorkshire puddings looked next level) and they had generous portion sizes. They were happy to accommodate our request for charcuterie in the evening - to go with our rounds of cheese ‘cake’ - and offered a wine tasting so we could choose wines they don’t usually stock at the pub. They allowed us to bring our decorations the day before (which they stored in their cellar and staff room) and had everything packed up and ready to go the day after. They really took the stress out of the day. The setting is also so beautiful and they really make the most of it with the conservatory. If it had been sunny, we could have had the roof open and windows down, but with the temperamental UK weather I was glad to have the option of having it all closed whilst still being able to see the countryside. The conservatory itself is licensed, so we had the ceremony in there and then Matt and his team turned it around for the reception whilst we had drinks in the main part of the pub (also extremely charming). Even based on the service alone, it was such value for money and some of our guests were even saying they hope to have an event there in the future.
