Derwent Arms in Ryedale

Dining out with food intolerances can often be a minefield, but my recent experience at The Derwent Arms was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment I mentioned my gluten and dairy restrictions, the staff were incredibly accommodating and reassuring. The menu, while featuring classic pub favourites, offered plenty of options that could be easily adapted. I opted for 2 courses for 12.99 and had tomato soup with gluten free bread for starter and cheese burger and chips, and the kitchen staff were more than happy to modify it to suit my dietary needs. The result? A truly fantastic meal. It's rare to find a pub that not only understands dietary restrictions but also manages to deliver a meal that tastes just as good as the original. There was no sense of missing out, or eating a bland substitution. The Derwent Arms has proven that they are a pub that truly cares about their customers. If you're looking for a warm and welcoming atmosphere, combined with delicious food and excellent service, especially if you have intolerances, The Derwent Arms is a must-visit. I left feeling completely satisfied, and I'll definitely be returning.

Had a midweek 2 course special. Delicious steak. Unbelievable value. Highly recommend. Very friendly staff too.

Evie is absolutely the best barmaid of all time, never have I been anywhere where someone is so attentive and helpful as she is. A beautiful soul who deserves more than she gets. An absolute stunner who will make us come back to the derwent arms again and again. The best ever!!!

Visited Nov 2024. Pub car park dark on arrival and raining, bar area busy. Family of 4 adults and 4 young children. Paid for food and drinks for all of the party. Have since received threatening letters to pay £200 parking fine because we didn’t see anywhere to register our cars. Despite speaking to bar staff to order drinks and food the car registration was never mentioned so can’t even say where the device was to enter vehicle registration just that you couldn’t get near to the right hand side of the bar. Would not recommend .

been working in the area past 7 days and I have visited here practically every day I must say the food is outstanding delicious and prompt cooked to high standards the staff are second to none best staff ever thank you for all your service the customers are just as great and pleasant nice warm welcome also definitely be having the cheese and bacon burger and hunters chicken on next visit or try something else I plan to come with friends and family in near future or myself if am working over this way well done everyone what amazing place to eat drink and visit

Tried the food for the first time this eve, will definitely return, it was lovely and the steak cooked to perfection! Lisa was lovely and the customer service from her was outstanding.

Value for money with a pint stop in motorhome with electric 10 pound and walk into town also bus service outside of building will return soon

Got issued a Parking fine of £100 after parking for only 14 minutes. Met friends who were already at the Derwent arms after work, came in for one pint and asked the barman if I needed to input car registration as I'll only be 15 mins. They said they didn't think so, so I had a pint and left in 14 minutes giving friends a lift home. Now got £100 fee!

Just had the 2nd meal since the new year here and the food was amazing. The burger was really good and peppercorn sauce is the best I've had

It's the second time I've been for food with my family,1st time was New Years Day,and it was so good we've come back again for my Nephews birthday. The food is excellent,staff really friendly and helpful,will definitely recommend to my friends to give it a try. 100% happy.

Absolute rip-off....attended works dinner there, having been there for such events previously. Arrived in the dark and didn't notice new parking signage and was fined £100 parking fee for not giving my reg number in. Appealed providing receipts from my visit and fee was reduced but still had to pay it. Will not be going back again...and strongly arguing works do goes else where in future!

Stopped off for lunch on our way to West Ayton. We decided on the southern fried chicken burgers and were not disappointed. Presentation of food and service by friendly staff was great. Will definitely return when we are in the area.

Me and my family had Christmas dinner out at the Derwent. Simon and Charlie the landlords are very welcoming and made the day perfect from start to finish, they couldn’t be more accommodating. The food was unbelievable, will definitely be visiting here again!

Plesently surprised with the swift and friendly service. Food cooked as requested and was excellent value for money. Hope to return often

Very fair parking scheme, clearly signposted

Absolutely disgusting for trying to rip customers off for parking fine. No obvious sign saying the customer’s vehicle needs to be registered and no info from staff either, not even have to mention when it is dark in winter. Tried to appeal with our meal receipt and it was unsuccessful due to no sufficient evidence. What a disgrace for such business to exist in Malton!

Brilliant pub been an our local for year and run by great lads, all staff really helpful and brilliant atmosphere!

Put on a balaclava and striped black and white t-shirt if you want to rob people of their money for parking in your empty carpark for a few mins. Take, take, take for something so inconsequential and an easy mistake missing a sign god forbid.

Warning: Went late afternoon after football two Saturdays ago. Parked the car and went in for a drink. I didn't see the parking signs (it was dark). The sign inside telling you to register your car wasn't obvious (our team and another visiting side all missed it) result - £60 fine. Four other players from our team got also. Surely staff should ,make a point of mentioning to new arrivals to register? If you don't pay the £60 in a certain time it jumps to £100. Appeals process a nightmare and pointless. Very poor customer relations in my opinion.

Came as a family for food and the food and service was amazing. I would highly recommend it. Only down side was gravy all ready over the food. Should be brought out separate.

Decent little pub in Norton, didn't eat but plenty of drink choices!

Only called in for a quick drink and warm up but stayed and had a catch-up with friends.

Had a pasta dish … very tasty and very filling.

Food very good. Plentyfull, and hot. Definitely recommend. BUT … all this was spoilt by the £100 parking charge we were left with a week later, from parking on the Derwent car park. You would have thought that a member of staff would’ve informed their patrons about putting car reg into their system on arrival. NOT HAPPY 😡 *EDIT* The problem regarding the parking fine has been taken care off by the Derwent arms management in a timely manner, very professional and much appreciated, definitely going back

Good food, always room for improvement but great price point for the food. Kids menu had some variety which is great. Shame about some shouty patrons down the bar way swearing around kids but that’s not really the pubs fault.

We called in for some lunch midweek , greeted by a warm friendly guy called Simon. We were given a menu an asked to order at the bar when we ready. We ordered the homemade fish & chips and chicken strips with a gravy jug on the side and skin on fries. The food was piping hot & delicious. My friend had the hand pulled real ales Timothy Taylor’s I just had a soft drink as was driving. The pub is spotlessly clean, welcoming & dog friendly. What a big difference these landlords have made to the pub we shall be visiting more often 😊👌

Amazing staff and very accommodating

Poor experience. Went for lunch as two. The pub was very quiet and we was the first to order yet we waited an hour for food. When the food came the chips were overcooked frozen chips which came with both the dishes, gammon and southern fried chicken platter. The southern fried chicken tasted like flour, the hunter chicken was not hunters chicken very dry and had tomato sauce on it? And the chicken wings had very weirdly tasting cheap bbq sauce on them and the beans looked like they had been in the microwave for 5 hours. The gammon was burnt on the outside and raw in the middle. Both meals were inedible. Very disappointing, made Wetherspoons look like a Michelin star restaurant. We don’t usually write reviews however felt like this one was needed.

Stopped with campervan at Bank Holiday. Lively pub and very friendly staff. Dog friendly too. All the best for the wedding.

Went in for a meal with my family. Had a few drinks aswell. Quite a few people in and some dogs who were very well behaved and friendly. The food was very nice and tasty and came very quickly.

This is our local and we’ve been a few times now after it’s had new management and it was fantastic food! They do some great deals and it feels like a nice environment that you need in a local pub!

Went for dinner one day. Really nice food freindly atmosphere and great staff. The £60 fine for parking in the car park was a kick in the knackers. Gutted. Somewhere hidden away apparently is a sign saying you need to put your reg number on a terminal.

After a very long wait (at least 45 minutes) the food arrived. It was not brilliant, but adequate. The lasagne was very nice, though not a huge portion and the salad consisted of a few bits of lettuce, half tomato and a bit of onion and cucumber. The garlic bread was small and a bit withered. Not somewhere I will return. Sadly. The pub looks like a nice local.

I contacted The Derwent Arms to see if they had availability to host a christening reception after my daughter’s baptism. Simon, Charlie, and their amazing team went the extra mile to ensure the pub was ready for all my family and friends to celebrate. From decorations to laying out the buffet, they made sure my vision came true. My family and friends were greeted with a warm welcome by the staff and directed to the private area where the reception was being held. The pub also has wheelchair access and a disabled toilet, which was great as this was needed for some guests, and most pubs in the area don’t have either of these. All in all, I couldn’t be happier with how the day turned out. A very big thank you to Simon, Charlie, and their wonderful team. I will definitely be using this establishment for any future events!

Staff are brillant and helpful. Food was lovely. Highly recommended kids chicken nuggets, cheese and bacon burger and the chicken wings. Bar snacks have a lovely deal if you want to pick and share. Drink prices are reasonable, will be returning.

I very rarely use the word pristine but this place was above and beyond... Came here to complete some work Simon is the new landlord and high standards are clear to see. The Derwent Arms is a jewel in the punch tavern crown and has to be seen to be fully appreciated... On Google there are more than one Dewent arms so not too be confused this is the one in YO17 postcode. Site offers the complete guest experience, live sports, pool, food and drink in very beautiful surroundings. Large FREE carpark but you must put your Registration in on the machine Thank you Simon for looking after me during my visit 👍

Lovely overnight stay - great evening meals and good breakfast. Friendly staff. Very clean. Dog friendly and good value

Went down to try the lunch menu, told to grab your own menu and sit wherever. Burger was edible it didn’t have much going for it and must say it was like having a kids meal only came with a handful of chips. Pint was poor and atmosphere wise it was very quiet but wouldn’t expect it to be heaving on a lunch time.

Stopped over on a Friday night with friends and two motor homes, free parking and the spaces had been coned off for our arrival. Lisa and Evie behind the bar are friendly and helpful and the food was outstanding, well worth a visit.

Absolutely horrendous,did not appreciate the threatening behaviour from the staff,had to wait 45 mins just for the starter!!

Staff were absolutely lovely! So welcoming and friendly, even though it was busy with the footy on. Found this place randomly when we were desperate for some decent food having been stuck in a tent in the rain all day! Had the vegan Sunday dinner, simple but tasty and filling and very enjoyable. Dog friendly too! Definitely worth popping in if you’re in the area - really nice place.

Since Charlie and Simon taken over. Derwent Arms has become such a delightful place to come and enjoy a drink, music, food and amphoshere. They really have turned the pub around. The food is amazing and quick service too. Its family and dog friendly. So I highly recommend this establishment to all far and near.

Great food, great service and atmosphere!

The new menu is amazing and not overpriced. i’ve been 3 times now and will definitely be returning again. i had the burger every time which has been consistent and the chips compliment it perfectly. i’ve tried the any 3 bar snacks for £15.99 which we’re definitely worth it. we had crispy prawns and mozzarella sticks which were delicious. we also had the nachos which in my opinion needed a bit of salt but we’re still very nice. my dad had the steak and ale pie which he said was lovely and other family members have thoroughly enjoyed the hunters chicken, sausage+mash and mushroom+tarragon pudding. can’t wait to go back to try the calamari, fish and chips, lasagne, onion rings….and many more items they haven on the menu. disappointed i haven’t tried a dessert yet as they sound amazing, the burger has filled me up every time which is great though as we haven’t ended up spending too much money!

Called for a meal on the way by, pub was quite busy with drinkers watching football and a few tables eating as well. Nice enough food and good prices too, big carpark and seating area at the back. Shame it started raining. Will call again 👍🏻

I visited the Derwent arms yesterday for lunch with my husband and mother. I had the mixed grill, my husband had the garlic and stilton burger and my mother had the gammon all of which was really good. The pub is dog friendly which is a welcomed amenity. The car park has plenty of space for patrons which is also appreciated. The food is excellent and offers great value for money. The desserts were also excellent. We had ice cream Sundays and I had the cookie dough which was divine and I would actually call in for just this and a drink it was so good. Collectively our bill was about £70 and that was for 3 main courses, 3 desserts and 6 drinks. I shall most definitely be returning to the Derwent in the near future.

Nice clean pub... a bit too 'commercial' to be a true English pub for my liking but I'll most probably pop in for a pint next time I'm in Norton.

Worst meal ever had. Fish size for a child. Peas hard chips from supermarket cheap kind. Expensive nothing like it used to be years ago. Wouldn’t recommend anyone to go. Go to local chipy in mill street instead. Really very poor

We went for a walk with the dogs and called in here for lunch. It was empty except for us, but it was a weekday. Lovely attentive bar person and a good choice of drinks. Quite an extensive menu, but we chose from the lunchtime one. Very tasty fresh food, we would definitely recommend. Dog friendly too, thanks
