Hate chains, so was passing this bakery and thought brill, fresh home baked individual cake and bakes and pastries, we bought varied savoury and sweet, all tasted like cheap chain food, most went into the trash can, shame.

After a long walk we called inhere for lunch. The signs were there, well they weren't actually, outside the shop are lots of signs but no menus, no prices. In we went anyway. Staff very pleasant. On checking the menu it was a little expensive so I opted for a ham toasties at £7.50, I would normally have cheese with it as it isn't really a toasties without is irmt but £2 extra to have cheese with it! Robbery. The Mrs had a toasties as well, but it was interesting to see that if you wanted your coffee white, then the milk was 20pence extra!!! What???? Milk should come with itasit does never other cafe I have ever visited. Rant over The food was good though but I felt robbed by those 2simple overpricings!

We had breakfast here this morning (Feb 17th) and it was very good. One large breakfast, 2 small breakfasts with coffee. We all enjoyed the food, it was hot, well cooked and tasty. The mushrooms were particularly delicious! The toast was also very good. Very filling and kept us going til teatime! Pleasant service in a bright and modern cafe. We loved the photos of the business from many years ago. Highly recommended.

This review is based on two consecutive lunches. First was soup and sandwich and was very good in every way. Second I ordered steak and kidney pie with peas and chips. What I actually got was a steak and kidney stew with a piece of puff pastry. Definitely no pie!! This is in Yorkshire where we know what pies are!! All tasted ok but NO pie!!

Food was nice. The price for a small bottle of juice is overpriced. For what you're paying I think the customer is doing a lot of the work. The one way system to go in and out is ridiculous.

The setting of the quaint village of Thornton le Dale, suits this cafe really well. Baldersons is very reminiscent of the cafés of the past, with a cosy feel and good food offerings. Could do with updating their menu to accommodate dietary restrictions.

Stayed in the village for a week, but only visited here once. Had a lovely lunch, but they would have had more of our business if it wasn't for a silly 'No Substitution' rule for breakfast. The Cedarbarn cafe (1 mile up the road) happily offered substitution so got all our breakfast trade.

Nothing special at all. Not what I expected or anticipated from the outside. More akin to the cafes in supermarkets or motorway services than in a village. Food and drinks okay, but nothing more. No character and little atmosphere. I didn't appreciate being forced through the gift shop in order to exit, either. Odd.

I have never felt such an overwhelming desire to leave a negative review which I normally wouldn’t do. I visited with my elderly mum and 5 year old daughter. We ordered three meals and three drinks. My daughter drank her fresh orange very quickly and then had no drink. She has Cystic Fibrosis and has to take tablets with food, so I asked for a glass of tap water and explained that it was to take tablets she required. I was told that there was bottled water at £1.95 I could buy, I said she only needs a sip to take her tablets, but was directed towards the fridge to bottled water. Having been disgusted I went and sat down, having no alternative I went and bought a drink, of which my daughter drank hardly any, when buying I said I was disgusted as my daughter has CF and I required a drink for tablets. Again I was directed to the fridge to bottled water. Having gone in this cafe for years the sheer greed of the owners makes me certain I will never go in again. I hope customers read this and custom is lost. I work in a professional job and there is such a term as discretion, I would suggest you learn to apply it in future.

Took my elderly parents for lunch, went to order 3 mains and asked for 3 glasses of tap water. Was told by cashier we had to buy bottled water, on questioning this the owner/manager intervened and I was informed the same, had to buy bottled water. I asked cashier how much my order came to....£35. I questioned manager, was she prepared to forsake my order of £35 (+ 3 sweets following main) for the sake of 3 glasses of tap water? ...to be told yes!! I can only describe our experience of a cafe I have visited many times before as awful and the owner/manager was obnoxious, arrogant, rude and lacked any sort of people management skills. I shall not frequent the cafe again and will not recommend......I hope in deepest, darkest winter when customers are harder to come by the cafe owner/manager realises £35 maybe worth more than her attitude!!!!

I wonder if this place has recently had a change in management or ownership as the service has gone down hill rapidly. We ordered two drinks and two cakes. The cakes of which were tasty and a good sized portion. With our order we wanted a couple of glasses of tap water and were informed we had to buy bottled. This is a very unusual choice for a business of this nature, although not illegal as they are not licensed so we were told. As well as ‘if you don’t like it, you don’t have to stay’ - this place is usually good, but we wont be returning any time soon.

Sat out in the courtyard, nice sunny day to sit out for lunch. The lunch was disappointing. Very mediocre and when I asked for water for the table I was told we do not give free water it’s £1 a bottle (this is tap water just pre-bottled. They also have branded mineral water for a higher cost). We ordered tea but I like to have water with a meal too. We were also dining with toddler who didn’t have the option of the other drinks on the menu, so to refuse them water is pretty disgusting. Having spent £26.35, a glass of water should not be charged for. I was quoted they don’t have to give me free water because they are not a licensed premises. The young member of staff was embarrassed having to refuse and she did say sorry. This cafe is lucky in the fact it is in a village with a high footfall of tourists and maybe doesn’t have to try too hard as most of their business is from one off visits but for the people like myself who lives fairly locally to Thornton-le-Dale and would revisit in their quieter months, this type of service has ensured they will not be getting any repeat business from myself and my family.

Baldersons operate a row of shops on Thorton le dale including a bakery, coffee shop, gift shop and ice cream parlour. The business has been here years and I always stop off while visiting Yorkshire. My wife and I stopped off for a drink and sat in the patio area at the rear of the shop. You now have to wait to be seated which is fine and as we had two dogs with us we had to sit outside anyway. The outdoor decking is a lovely quiet area which is also sheltered in case it rains. Outside next to the seating area are a few bits for sale such as wood carvings which are very nice. There is no table service so you must go up and order your drinks etc and take it back to your table. On this visit my wife had a latte and I had a tea which were both fine. We also got a couple of cakes to take away which we ate later that day and were extremely tasty. The rocky road was a little hard, but still good and we were given a large slice of it. Only thing I disliked on my visit was the exit is no longer the way you enter the cafe. Customers without dogs can go through the gift shop which is fine, however we had dogs and so had to exit through a back gate. On our visit it started raining just as we were leaving and so had a bit of a walk to get back to our car. I really think Baldersons need to rethink this policy they have put in place.

Still using outdated covid restrictions and looks like a bank with the big protective screen. I wanted a bacon and egg sandwich that I was told I couldn't have because the kitchen was too busy. Why advertise it on the blackboard then? Since the bakery...

No tap water available even after we spent £40 on food and drink!!! The panini's were yummy with a generous helping of filling and salad so can recommend on that front. What we found strange was we were not allowed tap water or to fill out water bottles and were told to buy a water bottle...which we didn't. There wasn't too much of a welcoming or friendly atmosphere from the staff there, however food came quickly and was nice. The garden was cute and if you can eat there we would recommend. We just felt that for £40 being told we weren't allowed tap water (only asked for 2 glasses) was really disappointing.

Baldersons welcome cafe is in Thornton le dale. We called in on Sunday lunchtime for a cup of tea. Cafe was very busy but managed to find a seat. We had hot cross buns and a pot of tea. Good quality tea and plenty of it, the buns were home made and very buttery, toasted nicely and were absolutely delicious! There were plenty of pleasant staff who were very well organised. A lot of the customers were eating meals from the extensive menu. Will return!
