Nice pub in great location for walks, and staff really helpful and friendly. The rooms are light, airy with good views. Unfortunately, the experience was completely spoiled by the meals. We had to wait ages for the dinner to arrive, and when it did the steaks were significantly over cooked. Breakfast - no where to sit. Eventually found a table in the main bar area. Had to go foraging for cutlery, etc. The breakfast foods were not replenished and tables not cleared. Waited and waited for coffee and cooked breakfast, despite going to find and prompting staff. Had to give up in the end. No blame on the staff just the system that allows walk-ins to be prioritised over guests. Shame - maybe better out of season.

We’ve eaten here several times over the past year since we moved to the area and have been thoroughly impressed with the service and food but this last visit was utterly disappointing, Starting from the minute we walked through the door we could tell that there was issues, no staff present and a queue of customers waiting at the bar, we’d booked a table and were just waiting to be seated but had to wait while the one member of staff who had been changing barrels who then appeared and started pulling pints for the waiting customers one other member of staff came out a served another customer then promptly disappeared again! After ten minutes we were told where our table was and to order at the bar where as every other time has been table service surely this along with the food is what people pay good money for and expect? We ordered our food and drinks at the bar and again waited, drinks arrived and we waited for our food which was fine but nothing special and in our options not a reflection on the price or what we’ve experienced in the past. Mine was a tiny bit of gammon a fried egg on top, a small amount of fries and what was supposed to be a salad! For just short of £16. There were obviously problems that day and it has really put us off wanting to come back again. It felt like a run of the mill pub that day and not somewhere special to take visiting family.

On our recent visit to the Yorkshire Dales, we enjoyed an evening meal here due to it being the closest pub within walking distance to where we were staying. It is recommended that you make a booking for this pub as it apparently can get very busy, however, when we arrived around 6:00pm it was fairly quiet. Although our table was actually booked for 7:00pm, we were allowed to sit there from when we arrived, even though we did say we wouldn't be ordering food until around 7:00pm, this was no issue. The menu offers a good range of traditional pub dishes, we ordered; the beef and mushroom pie and the fish and chips. When our food arrived, it was nicely presented with great portion sizes, and it was really tasty! The only complaint we had (which is only very minor) is that the mushy peas served with the fish and chips were quite dry and cold, they certainly didn’t taste fresh.. Other than that, the food was great! The service was brilliant, staff were friendly and catered to us promptly. If we ever return to this part of the Yorkshire Dales, we would certainly book at this pub again.

My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful Sunday lunch here with our 3 large dogs. The staff were amazing at accommodating us despite us not having a booking on a busy Sunday lunchtime and we had a wonderful table in a secluded area giving us enough space to settle our dogs and eat without playing lead swap all the time, which can be a real issue eating out with more dogs present at the table than humans! The service was fantastic and the food was amazing. Highly recommend and we’ll definitely be back!

We were passing by and popped in to see if we could get a table to eat, it is best to book ahead if you do not want to be disappointed, as they were very busy and had a lot of group bookings booked in. We did get a table and had to leave it by a certain time for the next occupant’s, this was fine and we were thankful they could fit us in. Oh we were we pleasantly surprised when we got our food, it is the best meal we have had in a long time, compliments to the chef, every mouthful a delight, it was so tasty, and the presentation perfection. The staff were delightful, and very attentive, we felt comfortable and felt as though we had been coming to the pub for years, even though this was our first visit, definitely a pub to visit and enjoy a beautiful meal, great beer, fantastic food and brilliant staff.

A heartfelt thanks from me to the talented chef who put together my rare roast beef salad. Succulent beef, salty and tangy Yorkshire blue cheese, crunchy candied walnuts, home-pickled veg, black peppercorns, a small amount of garlic, all the salad leaves under the sun, plus a gorgeous dressing that pulled everything together. Each forkful a delight and each forkful slightly different. A real pleasure to eat. The heather on the tables was a nice touch and the service fast and efficient. Highly recommended.

Love this place! Been lucky to have spent a lot of holidays in Arkengarthdale over the years. The Dale is scenic, quiet, and never seems to change too much. Full of amazing scenery, characters, and history. The CB is all this too. Set in a beautiful part of the Dale, the CB says its food and drinks are great, and they are. You get what you pay for, fantastic food and drinks. The staff are all brilliant, thoughtful and very capable. They remember little details about your last visit and are warm and welcoming. Very dog (and people) friendly. Good choice of food on the lunch and dinner menus, and children's menu. Vegetarian options are very good too. Book in advance if you want a table. The place is really popular, and you'll be very lucky to turn up and they have a spare table in the holidays. A great place to relax and unwind in one of the best parts of the country. The CB has a small children's play area, with a couple of big old trees to keep the sun off. If your children fancy some arts and crafts, a house a couple of doors uphill does felt kits (and made ones, if you want to pretend you made it), as well as some potted plants. Downhill in Langthwaite a local farmer sells amazing (very) free range eggs at the roadside too. Have a great time!

celebrated a significant birthday on saturday lunchtime with party of 5 of us plus 2 dogs- my first visit to here and very impressed - luckily roads were clear but surrounding countryside striking especially as snow bound as was car park. Car park whilst slipper for our cars but passable was hugely popular with the dogs in our party as lower areas were untouched and had perhaps 6" of snow which dogs thought was perfect! Warm welcome in the pub which is very spacious and well arranged with a number of tables and eating/drinking areas extending over several areas . Food and service were great - our party had the fishcakes/ seafood/ bacon chop/ fish and chips and all of us enjoyed our mains. We all also had deserts which were all popular with us . Dogs had bowl of water but missed out otherwise. Overall very happy with location/food/service - thankyou.

My son and I had a (ubiquitous) burger and my wife had mushroom tagliatelli for lunch on Bank Holiday Monday, 2nd January. It was a funny day to be visiting which may account for the slightly limited menu of these dishes plus fish and chips and steaks. All very pleasant, though, much like the modern, fresh environment. Pretty quiet too with bags of space so you probably don't need to book. The cost was £71 for three mains, two desserts, two soft drinks and one shandy. Quite expensive but I guess that's the going rate these days. The Inn (a hotel) is the perfect place to pause on a walk from Langthwaite along the east bank of the Arkle Beck to Whaw and back on the opposite bank.

OK so its not cheap, but the menu reflects the price - interesting variants on pub food (a pork tasting dish with loin, belly and black pudding with mash, veg , gravy and apple sauce) and old favourites plus kids menu. Situated high above a long, beautiful dale down to Reeth and with the addition of rooms (which I can't comment on but sound nice) a children's play area, a welcome for dogs on leads and a view to die for, this is worth every minute of a half-hour drive out for dinner. My partner and I came for lunch date before walking our dogs. When we came in we weren't too sure who the bar-person was as there wasn't anyone to welcome us or stood behind the bar, however a man rose from writing at a table and then served us. It's quite an unusual building, set on two levels with a nice wood floor and open fire. We noticed it was very quiet with no music on and felt we had to whisper, so we chose a table where we could talk. They don't have a menu its written on a large mirror so you need to go and choose off the mirror board. The hosts were both pleasent throughout and advised us where to take the dogs for a walk.We ordered the 'toad in the hole' and the rib eye steak cooked 'medium'. The toad in the hole was nice, lovely sausages, although not a traditional style with sausages cooked in the batter. The steak was rare and very fatty, which was disappointing as it'd been requested medium. We really didn't want to say anything as the staff were busy with a large group and it was late on in the lunch service time.We would return, but perhaps on an evening when there's more of an atmosphere.

Even though we have visited Swaledale for several years now this was only the first time we have visited the CB Inn for dinner. Even though under the same ownership as the Punchbowl in Low Row the CB Inn staff appear to be a bit more standoffish and less customer focused. Maybe it was just the way I had to wait at the bar when it was not particularly busy while the landlord perused some papers. Our experience in the summer when we visited was similar although admittedly it was busier. Having said that the food was good and the table service was attentive and welcoming which left a better impression.

My friend and I went for dinner here on Monday 16th. We’ve been here lots of times over the years and always had lovely food. Tonight we had a few issues (not onerous). The hummus was awful, tasteless and watery and was just mashed tinned chick peas. My friend had scallops which were great. Mains - I had brill which was perfectly cooked, however, it was supposed to be accompanied by asparagus and it wasn’t. The veg was petit plus, small bits of asparagus and kale. The kale was stringy and tough (as kale is!) either strip it off stalks or cook it well. My friend had the trio of pork (delicious) which didn’t have the ‘tender stem’ (we assumed this was broccoli??). It came with Parmentier potatoes (small cubes) about 8 in total and 8 same sized cubes of what looked like charred hard potatoes. So I thought I’d mention this to the waitress - I asked her to go and taste the hummus as it wasn’t very pleasant and suggested that the plate shouldn’t have been sent out with black, burned potatoes. She said she’d check with the chef....I wasn’t expecting an apology but I certainly wasn’t expecting her response of “the chef doesn’t put a lot of garlic in the hummus as people don’t like garlic, he did use tahini. Have you had the hummus here before (no), oh well this is how we make it” and the black cubes “these are black pudding croutons, they are a garnish” but they are inedible, they are solid and burned” “they are a garnish”. The barman/came over a bit later and asked if all was ok with dessert - yes. “Any comments?” No I’ve given my feedback. He then went into the kitchen and shouted “All rectified” How bloody rude! The bill came with additional items on it “oh what has the till done now?” was his excuse.

Having gone to cb inn several times over the last 8 or so years we thought this time the food was less hearty and the place had lost some of the quirkyiness. My wife was suffering a bad cold and we decided to shorten the trip. Sadly we had to pay for the 2 nights we didnt stay. Yes they helped out a little on the price but ultimately we felt sad after all the stays we made to be treated like pound notes walking in the door rather than a valued guest. Anyway we wont return now. The cb inn does have a captive audience due to lack of alternatives but that said we go to another venue next time we want a dales walking break.

On arrival, we were therefore told we were late for our table (we were not) and told we had to look at the menu on the board and order within 5 minutes otherwise our table would be taken. I was highly disappointed with the manner in which we were spoken to at this point. Afterwards, the service at the table was very good. Overall the food was of a high quality and we enjoyed our mains. The sticky toffee pudding was great, however the lemon posset was very thick and lacked a lemon flavour. Could be a great place if it wasn’t for the poor service initially.

Popped into the pub as we were passing. Lovely pub. Really nice roast beef baguette with homemade chips. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Would definitely recommend or revisit if I was in the area.

Had superb dinner with friends two nights running. Exciting and varied range of dishes to choose from for meat, fish and vegetarians alike. Booking essential (at the weekend)

We dropped in for lunch whilst out walking. Only had pork and sausage baguettes and chips, but the portion sizes and quality was excellent. The more extensive lunchtime menu looked very good, as did the evening menu. Beautiful location as well. All good.

We stopped here for a snack lunch on a drive through the dales. We were eating out in the evening, so did not want much and chose a bacon and cheese baguette, which was delicious. The pub was quite busy and we were therefore told we could sit in the dining area, which was very comfortable The pub is situated in beautiful countryside, the staff friendly and the Yorkshire beer great. A good find!

Stopped for lunch on our drive through the Dales. The lunch menu looked great, we had a bacon and blue cheese baguette and a beef and red onion baguette both of which were lovely. The staff were friendly and helpful. Definitely worth a visit.

We spent an afternoon driving through the area visiting Richmond, Reeth, and such when our friend suggested The CB for dinner. It was quite possibly one of my favorite meals while in the U.K. I selected a pan seared seabass which was prepared Thai style and my husband had the lamb. Both of us were very impressed. It may feel like an English pub in decor and situation, but the quality of the food was fantastic.

Planned to go once, ended up going twice as they were happy to accomodate us a short notice even thnough busy. Veggies well catered for; not a massive numbner of choices, but all good. Beer well kept too, sadly not the case in all pubs that concentrate on food.

After a wonderful walk over the moors from Low Row, in the most Glorious Sunshine we came into the 'CB' panting with thirst- quenched by a couple of pints of the local BaaBaa real ale, perfect pints- served by the friendly barman. After some advice from him we had some homemade bread and nuts with a scotch egg (house speciality) to share- followed by a light lunch- one of the nicest terrines I've ever had and a lovely Crayfish Cocktail! We have booked for dinner next week to round off our holiday in this stunning part of the country!

We had such high hopes of a first class lunch on Easter Monday but not to be. Very poor menu with items not available and the service was not good - we had to wait almost 5 minutes for cutlery after the main course was delivered. Not tremendously expensive but too much for what we got. On a better note, the chips were good!Expected better especially on a bank holiday and am so disappointed. Shame but we will not return in a hurry.

We visited this Inn at lunchtime on Easter Monday. We had pre booked a table. We expected lovely 3 course meal in lovely surroundings!! What a disappointment! The restaurant was closed and we had to sit in the bar. The menu was a few things on a board and very limited. It was a special lunch for us and we felt very let down. we most certainly will not be returning.

RESTAURANT REVIEW NOT HOTELOver the years we have headed up to the CB for lunch before or after a good walk. Always a lovely experience. But today, despite friendly service, it was very slow and to be honest, lunch was pretty filthy. Overly complicated menu and when our choices finally arrived - yuk. Get a new cook!! Really.

We were staying in the village and walked up to try this restaurant on a Wednesday evening. We were greeted by a very friendly bar man. After ordering a G & T, he proceeded to discuss the best gin to have with the various tonics which I found really helpful and he obviously knew his stuff! We both had starters, my husband having the bruschetta and me the Thai fish cakes. Both were delicious. We followed with the 38hr slow cooked vindaloo, which was a little dry but full of flavour and the pork cutlet, again delicious. Service was excellent, staff very welcoming and friendly and food really good quality. This is also a hotel so plenty of residents eating but good to see some locals at the bar also. This is lovely find and an establishment that is really trying hard to make it's mark. Worthy of a visit.

My meal was ok but my partners was disappointing. Some items on the menu board were not available. Apart from that the venue itself was welcoming

The Charles Bathurst is perched high up on the daleside just inside the national park and commands majestic views down the valley below. The pub itself a rabbit warren of various rooms and stairways, filled with an eclectic mix of furniture as well as some rather obnoxious hunting and fishing devotees who misplaced their filter and volume control on the afternoon we visited, but that can be the plague of many a rural pub. Nevermind, the food was reasonable and the staff were friendly enough so we would probably return.

The wide ranging menu provides excellent choice from fish and chips and steak pie to lobster, scallops and venison. Everything is carefully prepared and always pleasingly presented. Starters in the £5 to £8 bracket with Mains ranging from £8 to £22.

We have been coming here as a family for many years and have always loved the location, rooms and food. However, on coming for Sunday lunch today we came away feeling a little disappointed. Whilst everything was presented very well, it was just not up to the standard we had come to expect of the Sunday lunch. It use to be superb but today was only average. The beef was overcooked and dry and strong tasting. Whilst I accept that that's what the local beef tastes like, there is no excuse for it being over cooked and dry. Hopefully the food on the standard menu is still of the same high standard it always was, but I would definitely not recommend the Sunday lunchtime roast,

We have been going to CB Inn for years and have always enjoyed it. It's been a while since our last visit but decided to take advantage of a great deal that the management have put on for December. We popped up for a quick one night, midweek stay and used it as a base for some walking. On arrival, we realised that there had been a change of management and the menu didn't seem as extensive as it used to be? However, we were delighted with everything about our stay and the food was excellent. I had a mixed cauliflower starter and to be honest, had no idea what to expect, it was gorgeous and very different. We both had the slow cooked beef Burginon and it was superb. We half expected to be given an inferior room as we were on 'the deal' but there was bone of that, the room was lovely. Can't wait to come back here, love the CB Inn!

The location is simply fabulous. At the top of Swaledale with views all around. Set up for walkers - so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the area. Mixing with fellow walkers meant a very sociable stay. Room was good size and comfortable. Restaurant bar and lounge were of high quality and brought a high enjoyable stay. Matt and Dave are great hosts. Thoroughly recommended.

No beer on draught, no food available. The only drink on tap was from yorkshire water. Don't know how the landlord makes a living, rumour is he has funds hidden in a barrel of Wensleydale Gold.

We visited 20th October 2024 for a meal for our sons birthday. We always go for special occassions however the meals were not as good as normal . Myself and daughter In law chose the bottomless Chinese my Husband and son chose trio parmos and my other son chose the Barney rubble mixed grill . Our table was booked for 6.30 we sat for 20 minutes and I had to ask Bar staff if we were to place our order at the bar to which she said I will come to your table . Long story short we waited and waited when the food finally arrived the trio parmos were extreamly dry and very hard unedible really . Very dissapointing experence .
