It wasn't a day to sit outside or even to have a cold lunch - so it was a case of two Scampis from the offer section of the menu and agreement - because of a further main meal later - to leave some chips uneaten. The service was swift, the scampi was spot on and yes there were more than enough nice crisp chips. Perhaps there could have been a few more peas but hey - the value was excellent.

Having previously sampled nearly everything on the menu, which we have always enjoyed and was also cooked to perfection, we visited today and "Surf and Turf" was on the specials board. I plumped for the special and my wife the Brewers pie, both with new potatoes. Yet again we were really pleased with the quality of the food and cooked to perfection. Topped off with a couple of pints of Yorkshires finest Timmy's Landlord. The Cherry Tree is a breath of fresh air in todays pub trade, Both Alf and Michelle run a quality establishment. Well worth a drive out to High Hoyland. Highly recommended. https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g528795-d2520879-r971582687-Cherry_Tree_Inn-Barnsley_South_Yorkshire_England.html#

I must say we were very disappointed with the food , it’s been a while since our last visit and I think it will be a long time before we go back ,, The chips looked like they had been sat waiting for the rest of the meal to arrive £23 for a mixed grill and the steak was like rubber and more fat that meat , We ordered chicken breast, which tasted like the cheapest processed chicken we have tasted I did enjoy my pint of bitter The lady behind the bar promised to let the chef know ??? Great service Ideal for taking your dogs inn after a long walk but I’d eat elsewhere sorry

When previously at The Cherry Tree recently, unfortunately my menu choice had sold out. No such problem today - so both of use had the Lamb Kofte Wrap - which was very good and was accompanied by the House Merlot, making for a pleasant lunch.. The wraps were good enough to be recommended to two other interested customers.

We all had such high expectations of this one. Rave reviews for their meals. We were out for a Sunday lunch and sadly I have to say we were all very disappointed. One of our party actually said, from the ones we’ve had recently, this was the worst. The clue I suppose was as soon as we walked through the door, the aroma of boiled cabbage. The vegetables on the plate were all overcooked, cauliflower with cheese sauce poured over is not cauliflower cheese! I do like a nice variety of vegetables and not just sloppy greens and carrots. The welcome leaves a lot to be desired, we’ve been here for drinks and tried to eat in recent months and have been put off by the sour face behind the bar. But, family members and rave reviews, we were prepared to brave it and try for a dinner. Won’t be back, at least we know now. The view is lovely though lol

Great Yorkshire Pub, cracking pint of Black Sheep, warm welcome, great food and a proper fire! Give the mid week steak night a try, two sirloins all the trimmings and a bottle of wine for £50, how can you complain? It ain't posh, it ain't bistro and it's all the better for it, we need to support these gems, a cracking down to earth boozer.

When my partner & I came here for food last week we were told we would have to collect our own meals as we were sitting at the top garden. This was reiterated when we ordered and we were happy to do this otherwise we wouldn’t have ordered. I spoke to a couple of waitresses when they were collecting glasses and clearing tables and they were very nice. When we were shouted to collect the food, I went down straight away, and as I passed another waitress carrying my food, (both with our hands full), i said ‘I’ll be trying to pinch your job next’ and smiled at her. When the manager came out and accused me of telling the waitress she wasn’t doing her job properly I was shocked! I apologised and explained that wasn’t the case and even told her exactly what I’d said. The manager was aggressive and nasty and walked away while I was speaking to her. She has since replied to my initial review saying I was sarcastic and abusive to the waitress which is totally untrue. Apparently this was caught on CCTV!? Feel free to share it! Instead of taking the opportunity to apologise to me for her unnecessary telling off and deliver some coaching to the ‘new staff’ on how to interact with customers, she has chosen to have another go at me on Tripadvisor. Classy.

The Pub is friendly and welcoming. It serves an extensive food menu at very reasonable prices. It's great value for money. Most people would find something to eat. There are vegetarian and vegan options available. There is a good choice of beers, wines, and spirits, plus a good variety of soft drinks or zero alcohol options. Everyone seems to have been thought about and catered for. As it was the hottest day of the year myself and husband opted for a cold chicken sandwich with a side of chips. We both heartily enjoyed it. We'll definitely be back!

We walked 3 miles for a drink and lunch which was all good until a person from behind the bar came and had a go at me while I was eating my food. Been today. Ordered Scampi. Opened sachet of unbranded Tartare Sauce and poured it into food. Was like water and not a pleasant taste. Went to bar to advise them it was horrible and was told nobody else had every complained. I was taught at catering college to never spoil food by cutting back on quality so was disgusted at response. I asked for a hot beef and onion sandwich instead and received one piece of meat with onions which barely covered the bread and charged over £10 for this with a few chips. We paid and four of checked money. As we left the rude man shouted it was £1 short. He obviously missed that one coin was a £2. I gave him another £1 even though money wasn't wrong. Maybe he could use it to buy a jar of quality Tartare Sauce. Coleman's is on offer at £1 for Xmas and would go better with his not cheap Scampi.

Sorry to say this. We have eaten here a number of times. My last review reflected our good feeling and experience. However today we called in and were disappointed. Jackie had a chicken salad. I can't remember the name exactly. The chicken was over spiced, dry and though. I had the steak and kidney pie. It was OK. Nothing to write home about. It may be that there has been a change of kitchen staff. You would not buy a pair of jeans without trying them on first. I am always suspicious of a pub that asks you to pay for your meal before you have even seen it. Sadly that was my experience today. Sad to see a place to go down hill.

On our first visit second week In August we really enjoyed it, although they were busy we didnt wait too long and the food was lovely I had salmon and there was plenty, a lovely young girl behind the bar was an asset no problems at all with the staff. Second visit 31st August very different my food was still very nice but my partners mixed grill was disappointing, and she forgot to bring his chips. We both noticed the portion sizes seemed smaller too. It was very busy and the staff seemed very stressed as there were lots of people in complaining around us. I must say I felt sorry for one of the young girls getting a dressing down but she held her own but on the other hand one of the other girls was dam right rude to a man, none of the staff that day seemed like they wanted to be there. My advice dont book more than can cope with, staff training in customer service and keep the lovely young girl that was sorting Bill's behind the bar 1st visit front of house not the older lady... sorry. Still gave 4/5 for food for first visit.

The Cherry Tree has been my local pub for several years visiting at least twice a week with my wife and family. During the Eat out to help out I ordered a rare to medium steak. When it came it was overdone and tough. I politely mentioned this to the landlord who rather flippantly told me it was overcooked as it was a thinner steak than usual and had been cooked for the normal amount of time. He then walked away without offering to rectify or even apologise for this. This is the first time in years of frequenting the pub that I have complained about anything. This issue could have been resolved in a friendly apologetic manner but it was just met with a rude and couldn't care less attitude.

I must say I have NEVER wrote a bad review on tripadvisor. But my visit was that bad I need to HIGHLY WARN PEOPLE TO STAY AWAY!!!! When visiting here we were trying out best to support local businesses especially in these challenging times. However we wish we hadn’t have bothered. People especially with children need to totally stay clear of this pub. We had a few issues with being charged for things we haven’t had. But that wasn’t the main issue. The main issue was the customer service. I attended here with my family and my 5 month old baby, when speaking Politely to the landlady questioning the added extras on the bill she answered by screaming across the pub shouting and distressing my newborn baby so much so I had to leave my family and take the baby outside to calm him down. I honestly don’t know how people continued to sit in the pub from how much she was shouting and making rude remarks. Sat across from us were elderly women who heard everything and also looked horrified. I will never ever return to this pub. What a rude, arrogant disrespectful person I wish I’d have read all the other reviews what state she has been on a rampage before hand too. Lastly the food was awful absolutely terrible.

Food arrived hot & quite quickly given that it is freshly prepared. Waiting staff were all very pleasant & attentive. Nothing too much trouble. The covid arrangements were well thought out - tables spaced, one way system with plenty of signage, disposal menus, separate table for serving etc. Have visited several pubs during the government's promotion & this was by far the safest I've felt so well done to all. Great to see that dogs are also welcome in certain areas of pub so hope to return with our pooch in tow. Thanks again

I was not going to review this establishment today. After all I should not review after every excellent meal.We arrived at 15.30 to be told there were not any tables available to eat. The ever customer focused Michelle did manage to sort one out for us.We were a little perplexed why tables were so scarce on a Tuesday afternoon, of course we had forgotten about the present government scheme.Food excellent. Staff excellent particularly the young lady behind the bar. Over the years I have become disillusioned with Ale. Often not well kept and/or lines not cleaned properly..The Timmy Taylor Landlord today was peerless. On a final note Michelle has turned down a lot of bookings today presumably because the pub was booked up by people taking advantage of the present government scheme (and why wouldnt they). To all those people out there that have done just that please continue to support this pub after the 50% discount has ended.Even at full price the food is cracking value for money.

The previous 2 reviews say it all really - if you don't enjoy a meal here, get your taste buds checked! Just enjoyed a wonderful meal here - must admit we're regulars as we live close by, but the amount of work they have done during lockdown surprised us; totally decorated throughout and the pub / restaurant looks brilliant for it. Clearly in these strange times, feeling comfortable & safe is important, and the emphasis placed upon cleanliness and hygiene is VERY impressive - you can sit and relax and just enjoy being able to go out again ! Thankfully, nothing has changed during the lockdown foodwise - it's really good value for money, plenty of choice and very tasty; you cannot possibly go away from here still hungry! So glad to have this wonderful place back in action - we've missed it. If you haven't tried it, just go for the view, the food, the drink and the welcome; it turns a trip out into something special.

Well my title isn't 100% accurate. Things are very much not usual for most of us right now. That includes The Cherry Tree. Having said that if anyone is a little bit wary of returning to this pub please please do not be.The attitude Michelle has towards the safety of her customers and staff is amazing.Hand sanitiser as you enter and as you leave. We witnessed a VERY thorough cleaning of tables and chairs between customers.OK now back to the pub.1. Bring an appetite. We made the leisurely 35 minutes walk from a neighbouring village to work up an appetite.2.The menu (to our surprise) was as extensive as ever. We had expected it to have been trimmed a little upon being re-opened.3.Terrific food at an equally terrific price. Most mains under £10.4.Friendly welcome from both of the owners.5.When things start picking up a bit more the range of Ales and Lager will be once again varied and to suit everyones palate. These guys have put an awful lot of time , effort , thought and no doubt money prior to reopening.Regulars will already know this. If you are just visiting this area do not pass the pub by.You are guaranteed a warm welcome , amazing food and a very hygienic place to be.Oh and the music is good !

The open fires and the friendly locals at the bar made my day. ( especially the local chap called fireman Jon who was friendly and very witty. A star). Definitely worth a visit. Try the 3 course Sunday lunch. Chuffing champion. All in all one of the best pubs iv been in. And what a view from the beer garden or sat at the front. Can't wait to go again. Excellent.

Twelve of us went for Christmas lunch last week and all thoroughly enjoyed it. Reasonably priced. We (hubby and two friends) are going again next week. Never yet had a bad meal, so looking forward!!

Nice Victorian country pub with great views down towards Cannon Hall . Lynne and Ken have retired this week after many years and we wish them a happy retirement . Pub does good real ales and offers cheap bar meals . Best quiz around on a Wednesday night . Sure the young couple taking over will carry on the good work.

Went with family for an early evening meal - we were not disappointed. Staff friendly and helpful, a great range of food to choose from, and came piping hot to our table. Two of our group ordered steak and kidney pudding which was awesome. The majority of main meals came with a choice of jacket potatoes, rice, chips or even half and half. A great way for people who can't decide what to accompany their meal. The rest of the family had other meals including delicious fish and chips, chicken dishes, vegie dishes and a wonderful lamb tagine. Everyone was too full for a dessert!

We went on the recommendation of another dog walker and weren't disappointed. Despite those writing negative reviews it may not be the shiniest pub but the food was excellent and staff welcoming which are the most important things for us.

You know when you can't be bothered to cook but you don't want to get dressed up, and you don't want to leave the dog at home? Yes of course you do. Well this pub serves the best steak and kidney pudding in town. Plus lovely chips. very reasonably priced, just an old fashioned pub with a fantastic view and steak and kidney pudding.

I like places where you are treated like a human, rather than a "customer to be processed". A lovely place to sit, enjoy your food and drink, and walk out feeling that you have had value for money - and to meet staff who are interested and interesting.

A group of us were looking for somewhere for a late Sunday lunch, so were very pleased to discover that the Cherry Tree serves food on a Sunday from 12 noon until 5.30pm. We booked for 3.45pm and there were still plenty of people dining, so a nice atmosphere. The food was delicious! We were very impressed with the extensive menu and felt spoilt for choice. There is a traditional Sunday lunch, but 3 of us opted for the steak and kidney pudding (yummy!) and the rest the beef pie. Clean plates all round. We got a lovely welcome when we arrived, the service was very good and we had a great time - so much so, we immediately booked for the same time next Sunday. We're looking forward to working our way through the menu over the next few weeks. Great value too, both food and wine. Thumbs up from us.

We entered the pub to be served, greeted by the blonde older bar lady very rude and abrupt. Asked if they had a certain drink....her response wasn’t helpful at all! Won’t be going back in a hurry, shame because the view is lovely but the inside let it down!!!

Lovely good value food and a great atmosphere, even on a Monday. Don't miss a great desert! Set in a stunning location and good for local walks.

We love this pub and don’t visit very frequently and today we realised why. We entered the pub, my husband ordered the drinks and myself and my children sat down at a table. From across the bar the crude old lady from the other side of the bar bellowed at me and my daughters in front of the whole pub that the table we were sat at was reserved and was about to be set for another party. I was very embarrassed and if it wasn’t for the fact that my husband had already spent our hard earned money on our drinks I would I have walked out straight away. We were then forced to sit outside in the cold with our drink. Thus to say we will not be returning

We visited for the first time on a glorious lunchtime and sat outside to eat. The pub was quite busy and we were greeted by friendly staff and locals. Inside is a cozy, comfortable country style pub, serving locals, walkers and workmen. The atmosphere and the service was good. We had cold sandwiches and didn't have to wait too long for our food to arrive. The portions are generous and the 'real live, home cut chips' were first class. Everything is freshly prepared and there is a good selection on the menu. We will return to sample more!

I am amazed how busy this pub was. I’m also amazed it has 4/5 circles. And that it won a certificate of excellence for three years. And that it has been rated as ££-£££. This is such a laugh and must reflect local opinions of the place. Coming from the south where things are more expensive, but clean and good quality I was quite frankly amazed that this place has not been shut down due to how filthy it is. I have never been in such a dirty, run down, worn out and grim pub in my life. I went to the loo as we arrived and the carpet had a red, normal coloured stripe down the centre but was actually black down both sides. BLACK! How does a carpet get that disgusting? The varnish was completely worn from all the tables - beyond shabby chic character to requiring complete overhaul or disposal. The ceilings were grimy and brown with dubious marks. The salt and pepper pots had actual lumps of dirt in the screw top creases. The menus were greasy. The choices were super basic, but when cooked well that’s fine. I had a mechanically recovered meat (chicken apparently) Kiev with soggy chips, soggy carrots, dry peas AND salad for some weird reason. They was no enjoyment in the eating of it. I did not want desert. When someone decided on another round of drinks my heart sank. I could not wait to leave. Cheap, but that’s not a good reason to go. Absolutely revolting.

We have eaten there a few times and really like the place. This time on a cold winter's day but when you walk in the warmth greets you. Lovely views of some beautiful countryside helped by it's elevated location. A large car park. We have always found the staff friendly and helpful. The food and drinks are priced for value and the menu has enough choice. Each time we have been we have chosen different things from the menu and have never been disappointed and this time was no different. Good, well cooked pub food.

Excellent lunch with friends. Piping hot and good quality food served by friendly staff. Two had the Gammon, egg and pineapple with choice of chips, jacket potato or mash. Onion rings, tomato, salad, mushrooms. Yummy. One of us had Chicken Breast with creamy sauce topped with cheese, again chips, jacket or mash. Came with carrots, green beans and other extras. Looked yummy too. Highly recommended/

Four of us for Sunday Lunch. The whole menu was available but we chose the roasts. Two had chicken and two had Pork. Lots of vegetables to share and a boatful of extra gravy. Followed this with two sticky toffees, one slice of cheesecake and one portion of profiteroles. The whole thing washed down with Sauvignon and a pint of Black Sheep shandy.

The food is excellent at a reasonable price. The staff are friendly and welcoming. We have visited several times this year. On warm days it is a great place to sit outside with a pint and look across the fields and surrounding countryside

I would definitely recommend the cherry tree. The pub is obviously very popular and busy so booking is a definite but it will be worth it. The staff are friendly and welcoming and the food is delicious and obviously home cooked. The pub is very traditional and has a cosy feel which makes visiting it a real pleasure and the views from outside are stunning.

Well it was an experience. The bloke running the place gave an aura of discomfort with a huge lack of understanding of the English language. I felt sorry for him that the proprietor had left someone in charge that was unable to understand an order. Two customers ended up walking out because they became too frustrated after they had to write down the order and then have guy just staring at them but into the void. I waited as I was simply filling time anyway. Wish I hadn't, the fish was awful, just meh slimy and gross. Not had fish this bad in a long time. Won't be going there again. Also whilst I was there an angry customer came in complaining that he hadn't answered the phone to take orders. The phone was going alot and he just stared at it. From what I gathered, because of his limitations of the language, he ignores the orders.
