The Whistle and Flute is engraved in my memory due to the outstanding food, service and atmosphere. Prices are absolutely amazing especially in accordance with the fantastic quality. There aren’t enough superlatives that can be used to describe this establishment and I can’t wait to return again.

This was my second visit. There is a wide range of menu choices, something for everyone, and a mid-week special on Tues / Weds of 2x mains for £20..... We opted for this - fantastic value. My friend had a huge portion of fish and chips, and I had chicken parm and chips. Really big portions and very tasty. We both had a pud, too. Friendly and relaxed. Well worth a trip.

Tried this pub for Sunday lunch recently. The food was good well cooled promptly served. My preference is for good vegetables with such and these were not. In an area where there are lots of local farms for veg it isn't difficult. The tables were a bit crowded in and the pub was nowhere near full but we were in early.

Booked to stay here after a long day’s walking. Obviously it’s cheap so I wasn’t expecting much. Unfortunately it still managed to disappoint. Breakfast is charged on top of the room rate, and I pre booked it when I arrived. I’ve just been for my breakfast to be told that the chef thought that the previous customer was from my room so there was no breakfast available. The shower leaked, there was muck on the carpet and the room smelled of toilet cleaner. I’m just waiting for my train home and the housekeeper has repeatedly tried my door and finally asked me what time I’m going to leave. I can’t recommend this place.

Happened to have a 90 minute wait between trains at Barnetby, so popped in here as it is literally at the bottom of the steps of the railway station. There were lots of food options on the specials boards, so we decided we would eat here. Both of our meals were excellent value (off the 2 for £16 board) , as much as we could eat, and were tasty and well prepared. The Doom Bar was in excellent form, as good as any I have tasted, and the bar staff were helpful and friendly. I would recommend this place to anyone, and we will be deliberately breaking future train journeys at Barnetby purely to eat here again.

I was at Barnetby station - about 30 yards away! - all day taking photographs fully equipped with sandwiches and a flask. But I'd heard that the Whistle and Flute was good so I thought I'd nip in for a quick lunchtime pint. One look at the menu convinced me to stay a little longer and so it was a while later that I left, after two pints of Doom Bar, a "small" portion of steak & ale pie, chips 'n mushy peas with a latté to follow. It was all excellent and Lord knows how big the normal portion of pie is! Well cooked food, well-kept beer and friendly service - what's not to like? I wish I were going back to Barnetby again soon... Recommended.

I had an interview in the area so booked one night. I was offered a week's work on the spot so extended my stay. They kept extending my work, week by week. Julie the landlady was exceptionally helpful when i went asking every friday to extend my stay. If you were born with a silver spoon up your arse and think drinking water comes from a green glass bottle with french writing, this is not the place for you. However if you are an honest working man, who needs somewhere warm, clean, comfortable, friendly and extremely affordable, that happens to be less than 50 feet from the door to the pub, less than 50 yards to a railway station and less than a mile from a motorway, then this is the place for you. I have no hesitation in saying I would be happy to stay here again. I tried to think of one negative to balance the review and the only thing i could think of is, if your are in the furthest room from the main building the wifi signal is weak. But in the words of Arnold, "I will be back".

Called in here on the spur of the moment for lunch, having last visited some seven years previously. Pleasantly surprised to see nothing much had changed in the interim. A good selection of well priced dishes and whilst my first choice of a seafood trio was not available (due to the proprietor having gone to the fish market to buy fresh fish - always good to hear!) my second choice was a fine replacement. The service was prompt efficient and very friendly, it could not be faulted.Whilst this venue could not be called fine dining, it does not pretend to be and serves good quality dishes at very reasonable prices.Whilst the decor does not seem to have altered that much since my last visit it is still clean and welcoming.Overall a pleasant visit and I will not leave it another seven years to return.

Having eaten at the whistle and flute many times, but not for a while now. We decided to have a morning at Briggs's garden center and then chance a table at the whistle and flute for lunch on the way home before walking the dog. We arrived and ordered drinks and the restaurant was empty but decided to sit outside as we had the dog and it was a warm day. The girl behind the bar did mention that we could sit inside with the dog in the lounge area but not the restaurant side. We chose to sit outside. I took our drinks outside and mine was ok but my partners was a some form of Diet Coke when I had asked for a coke. The food came 45 minutes later!! Mine was cold and my partners was Luke warm. I had to go and get cutlery and condiments after our food was brought to the table. My partner asked for salad cream which arrived when she had nearly finished her meal. The girl working behind the bar was clearly clueless and had even taken our order incorrectly. Now after speaking to the manager/landlady I can understand why.I asked to speak to the manager and a lady came out to talk to me. From a very large distance shouted "what's the problem"? I waited until she actually came to the table to talk to her. After telling her my food was Luke warm and before saying anything else she started telling me it was hot and that she had prepared it and it was hot. I also told her about the mistakes with the drinks and the long wait. She told me that there was a plumber in the kitchen. Absolutely no one had mentioned this to us. The manages attitude was absolutely disgusting towards a paying customer. Having finished talking to her she disappeared back into the pub and then returned with the young girl from behind the bar and again after a confrontational conversation she decided to discipline the young gile in from of us and the turned back on us.This is a total lack of leadership and management. I now understand why the pub was empty of customers and having now reading the feedback from other customers I understand why. Thais is a shame as this pub use to be fantastic.I would never recommend this place ever and the landlady/manager should listen to her customers other than abuse them. There is absolutely more I could write but I feel that it would go on to long.

We were advised to give this place a miss but decided to take our daughter there for her birthday, what a terrible experience! We had to wait for over half an hour for the waitress to take our order and it wasn't even that busy apart from a load of resident contractors drunk and swearing at the bar, The tables and cutlery were dirty and the floor had probably never been cleaned in a month of sundays. When the only waitress eventually took our order, the food came 3/4 of an hour later, it was cold and tasteless, when my wife asked if she could change it for something else, the landlady went off on one! what language!!! Consequently we left with my daughter in tears. I would say I've had better food and service in a transport cafe.I cannot see how anybody could eat and drink in a health hazard as this place seems. Avoid!!

I want to start by saying some of the reviews for this place are very harsh. Yes it does need a bit of a spruce up, some of the furniture very worn but this is a family friendly local pub not a fancy restaurant. The menu had a varied choice and we all found something we wanted for both starters and mains. The food itself was delicious and well presented, not one complaint from any of us. Service itself needs some work, the waitress (yes the only one on a busy Saturday evening) was lovely but she was running around trying to cope with everyone and we heard a few comments about slow service although it was no fault of her own. A few things that would probably prevent us coming for a special occasion again but would be perfect for a midweek family meal.

It proved to be an average stay at the pub/bed and breakfast. Staff seemed quite helpful and the room average. Our room was on the first floor of the accommodation block. Beds and bedding not brilliant, Wifi in the room was useless, tv was a very small flat-screen, shower not good. I expected the rooms to be cleaned each day but it was just the bin emptied and every other day coffee/milk etc were refilled. Disappointed that the carpet was not vacumed and not enough towels were provided for two people. Is it also too much for the windows to be clean on the outside to at least an average standard. The ceiling needs to be updated. Looks like what I had in my kitchen back in the 1970s. The rooms need a lick of paint and a good clean. Overall, it was OK, but I think next time I will stay at the Travelodge- generally good value for money but more importantly clean and all of the above issues catered for the customers to a more satisfactory level.

Upon arrival we didn't know if we was in the right place, it was a Saturday night and the place was empty , not only was it empty it was filthy there was all food and other bits dropped on the carpet what clearly hasnt been hoovered in a long time and the place just looked run down in general . We should of ran for the hills then but by this point we was in our seats and the waitress kept asking us for our order not wanting to make a fuss or embarrass the lovely young waitress, we ordered our food. I had pate what I couldn't even spread over the bread it had big hard lumps in it and was tasteless, my boyfriend ordered prawn cocktail and after the first mouthful said this sauce tastes off! We both left the starters, we was thinking about cancelling the main but it was already on its way out, we had both ordered steak and chips what could go wrong?! .... Both went for medium steak , couldn't even cut it and when i finally did get a mouthful it was full of fat and tasteless and I spat it out, my sweet potato fries didn't taste like sweet potato fries (I mean you can go to aldi and buy a bag for £1 and put them in the oven for 20 minutes and there perfect so not sure how they can go wrong) my boyfriend said his chips was hard in middle like they was still frozen. Not been the type of people to ever complain my boyfriend said don't eat the meal we will pay for it and go somewhere else! I would never complain ever I hate confrontation but I said no you need to say something as the manager needs to know , we had got the train there what took 20 minutes and cost us £20 why should we pay for something we haven't eaten then have to pay for another meal! In between all this some other people walked in took one look at the place and walked out but the manager didnt take a blind bit of notice, to busy sat getting drunk at the bar! When we eventually got the courage to say something the manager come over instantly with an attitude, we offered to pay for the starters as we had not complained at that point and asked if there could be a good will gesture for the rest of the meal we haven't ate. My boyfriend said his chips was hard, so the manager then picked a chip up from his plate and squidged it in her fingers and said 'your telling me thats hard?'! Then asked us if we wanted the meals warming up! (Not now you've had ya grubby fingers on it love!) Her attitude was disgusting, she didn't once say sorry , she was absolutely awful and told us to don't bother paying at all! ... which was actually fine with us but we was trying to meet her half way! Then we had to wait half an hour for a train in the wind and rain as we didn't feel we could stay in there!Like I say we never complain about anything, and my cooking isn't the best at all but this food was awful and so tasteless and to top it off the way the manager spoke to us was awful! We had heard so many good things about this place, not sure if its changed hands, but we told a guy at the train station about what had happened and he was from Barentby and said he had heard the place had got really bad! Go at your own risk!!

Such a shame. Cooked by someone who just did not seem to know how to give flavour to food. Pan searing gammon or pork should be a basic skill.

Popped in for quick drink Friday evening and was surprised how busy the place was. Had intended on eating at home but decided to try the food after a customer had ordered a mixed fish platter which looked really good, so I ordered one too and wasn't disappointed, lovely fresh fish and cooked to perfection, will definitely return.

I've been going to this pub for 20 years and always had great food....however tonight was not the case. I have to say this was by far one of THE worst meals I've had the misfortune to be served. Pollo Con Queso has been a long stable favourite from here for many years, but tonight it was horrendous, just chicken cooked in a tub of cream. No flavour at all. Salad with no lettuce leaves and a few chips. Asked to speak with management but told none were on site. After persuasion the managers son spoke with us who met some way to deal with complaint. Won't be going back here, what an absolute shame.

This pub has always been a firm favourite of mine from family meals to their lunch specials with friends but after visiting last week we wont be in a rush to return. I had heard disappointing comments recently but thought I would give it a go and make my own mind up how I wished I had listened. Long long wait for food wouldn't be able to nip anymore in a lunch break at work to meet friends... could see work groups there complaining about long waits. Once the food eventually arrived it was very disappointing. Chicken strips and chips always a firm favourite at the Whistle and Flute were all over cooked and verging burnt my son even left his chips which never happens. All meals received were well under par compared to this time a year agoOne young girl looked to be serving the bar and waitressing was polite and tried her best but she had to many people to deal with. The manager looked like she was cooking and was extremely flustered.Lets hope they turn things round as this was once a great pub

I have just arrived back from taking my friend for lunch. We have been here on many occasions and the food has been outstanding, and the service second to none. This did not happen today. We arrived on time where a young lady told us were our table was and asked if we would like a drink. Our drinks arrived quickly. We were offered a menu which I noticed was different from the one online( this had the same menu as before on previous visits, but has not been changed to new menu). Both my friend and myself wanted the lamb roast( as available on online menu) but was told that we could only have beef. We both ordered this to be told 10 minutes later that there was no beef because it had not been put on early enough for us to have it. We were then given the menus again and we both ordered steaks mine being Sirloin and my friend order Rib Eye. Another 20 minutes or so past when the young lady came back to say there was no Rib Eye Steak either. We were both surprised as the restaurant was not full only 2 other tables were being used. The meal arrived with the food pile onto plates that were to small. The steak was very tuff and hard to cut even with a steak knife, although it was medium rare and chips were very hard I could not eat mine. My friend said she did eat hers because she was so hungry. The chips were like they had been cooked before completely inedible. The salad was fresh though. When I went to pay I told the person behind the bar that I was disappointed with our food and she asked why and I told her, but all we got was sorry. It is a shame because this use to be a wonderful pub with good food and a great atmosphere I will not be going again in the future just a waste of money. Had better meals at some Hungry Horse Pubs.

Having visited here on a number of previous occasions and enjoyed lovely meals and service, albeit last visit was about 2 years ago, I was so embarrassed to have taken my visiting family after praising this place up to them to have to endure a 1 hour and 40 minutes wait and 3 times the single member of staff came out of the kitchen to apologise for not having items ordered. The food (I use the term loosely ) was diabolical and virtually inedible. We could not attempt to eat it. Other customers were continually complaining about their meals too. It appeared there was nobody overseeing the kitchen and no management to be seen, what's happened to this once lovely place. We will never go again.

The food I had today from the whistle and flute was spot on, admittedly the wait time was a little bit long but it was understandable due to the restaurant being full to the brim. I'm very picky when it comes to food so i usually struggle to find an affordable place to go out to eat that is to my liking, but it was very good for a pub and i would highly recommend to anyone passing threw the area.

I had an enormous mixed grill with tons of meat and couldn't finish it all, but it was all cooked to my liking.Heartfelt thanks to the owner for the hard work shes put in, as a lack of telephone and internet has caused them loads of hassle as she explained to us, due to a BT fault, so take cash if you go as the card machine wasn't connected due to the issue with the internet etc.We will definitely be coming back for more! It's our first visit here and we were looking forward to a nice pub meal. There was lots of things on the menu which were unavailable. So we both settled for the fish and chips. When it arrived it didn't look unappetising and bland. It was clear to see the oil needed changing. The fish itself was large and surprisingly very tasty, however the batter was thick and undercooked, and the chips over cooked. In the not to distant future this pub will be our local, we therefore hope this is the exception and not the rule.

I reviewed this establishment 6 months ago on my first ever visit, just for a drink, giving what was quite simply an honest view of what I encountered. (why do otherwise ?) For my pains, I was rewarded with a smug, sarcastic, self-satisfied and over-sensitive response from someone with the unlikely name of Adios, inviting me to never visit here again. In the intervening months I have, therefore, returned here 4 times when in the area ( I’ll eat / drink / spend my money where I want, thanks ), with either friends or work colleagues, and I’d like to put the record straight ( or straight-er )The food - minus a couple of dishes that were served not quite as piping hot as might have been expected - is every bit as good as many have previously commented on : decent sized portions, a good range of choice and clearly a chef with imagination. Certainly no “formulaic” meals here, and that is to be welcomed. The prices are perhaps a bit above average but maybe that is the “rural factor”, I don’t know, but they are not exorbitant. However, drink prices ( for beer, can’t comment on other formats) are very reasonable indeed so that offsets it pretty well. However, one view that I cannot amend, much at least, is that the staff really haven’t been very engaging, or particularly welcoming, at all, or given much impression of “having a good day” on any visit. Smiles don’t seem to be part of the “person specification” But overall the food quality makes it worthwhile for a good meal, and I’ll keep coming…. and spending.

Just had dinner this evening, the main meals were a bit disappointing. Had the service not been good the review would have been 2 start. I had the prawn cocktail starter which was good, my wife had the Brie which was good but a rather larger serving. Kids pasta went down well. Main meals not so good tho. I had the salmon in Hollandaise sauce which was missing the sauce. My wife had the prawn stir fry which had far too much sauce, it had the noodles and veg swimming in the sauce and was far too spicy for a normal sweet chilli. We didnt have to wait long for the meals and they had bread before the starters. Service was fine from the two waitresses that we saw.

We came on Sunday 23rd. I had the stir fried duck with noodles. It was ok. It would of been better with less sauce as I had more sauce then noodles which made it very gloopy and sloppy. The children's sausages were very chewy but they loved there mash and veg. The pork schnitzel was dry. Then to top it off we ordered puddings. 4 chocolate puddings, 3 crème brûlée and 1 vanilla cheesecake. To then be told 5 minutes later they didnt have enough chocolate puddings and nothing chocolate related to replace this. Also the créme brûlée's were served freezing cold and without the sugar topping being blow torched. The worst créme brûlèe I've ever had.

The location and appearance of this pub/restaurant are, let's say, unprepossessing. Don't be put off, I called in for a meal as I was staying within walking distance. I had Schnitzel with twice-cooked chips, peppercorn sauce, and veg. The Schnitzel was better than any I've eaten, including in Germany and neighbouring Germanic countries! The chips were also the best "thick " ones I've ever tasted, and the veg. nicely "al dente" too. Do give this place a try, the young waitress was charming and kind too!

Visited with some work colleagues a couple of weeks back and whilst it was all okay it didn't really stand out as anything as special as it seems like it tries to be based on serving food on wooden boards, slightly above average prices and a need to explain that eggs are from hens. I had a black pudding starter and it was pretty good, a very promising start. The other starters were also good and very generous portions. The mains were not as impressive. I had meat pie and it was good, but at 13 or 14 pound I was expecting a bit more as you can get really good pies in most places for less than a tenner. A couple of colleagues had steak which were both over cooked and also served on wooden boards which resulted in having to leave the sauce in the servicing pot and dipping the chips in it. The others were okay but just a bit overpriced. Overall we had a decent meal and as such I have given a generous 4 stars. I will definitely try it again as certainly potential.

We ate here for my aunt's birthday at the weekend. We were a party of 7 and had booked in advance. Despite this, on arrival we were informed that the bookings had all been made at the same time and that we would be unable to place our order till the Chef was ready. Despite it being very chaotic I really cannot fault the service of the two waitresses who must have been very stressed out and had their work cut out for them because of the booking errors. When our food eventually did arrive it was worth the wait. Despite the chef having a backlog of orders the presentation of all the courses was superb with everyone agreeing their meal was delicious. I really also have to give credit to the chef who had his work cut out for him, had to put up with some really rude and aggressive customers but despite this took the time to come around every table to have a quick chat and check that everything was okay with our meals - you really don't get that type of service at many places these days. All in all, despite the wait and chaos, it was a lovely meal with excellent service. The only thing I would say is that whoever is in charge of bookings should pay much better attention next time. To cause undue stress to your staff as a result of your mishap was really unfair and wasn't nice as a customer to witness either.

Just had a very disappointing visit for a family Sunday lunch. We have visited many times before and have previously rated the food very highly. On this occasion my children were expecting to be able to choose their meal as they would normally to find that there were no listed children's options. When we asked if they could have a small plate option we were told that they could only do that for a few options on the menu. So my 9year old daughter who wanted a burger was offered the adult meal at the adult price. My children did not enjoy the meal which was made worse as we had to wait a long time to be served. We were hoping to make this our weekly treat but will not be going back with the children. The food when it came was ok but I couldn't help but feel that the chef was more interested in appearance than flavour. The only positive was the waitress and bar staff who were very friendly and accommodating.

Treated to a meal out by son and new daughter-in-law who live locally, when visiting them last week. Quality food, good range of options on the menu, served hot and fresh and very good portions, clearly a good chef as I see has been remarked on before. Will definitely call again next visit albeit it will doubtless be my turn to pay for the "treat :-) One comment I would add, though, is that I also found the staff somewhat off-hand and lacking in any warmth or welcome, which I see has been previously noted. However, I can probably live with that when the food is as good as this

Went for a celebratory birthday meal to the Sheffield Arms which had come highly recommended. We weren't disappointed. It was the best 'pub' meal I've had in years. Two had meals from the menu and two of us had the wonderful all you can eat carvery. Everyone enjoyed their meals (lasagne and Yorkshire Pudding wrap) but the carvery was exceptional. Great choice of vegetables, meats, sausages and the most gorgeous baby potatoes. The staff were great, very cheerful and friendly and the puddings were delicious too. I understand that the Sunday carvery has even more choice. We paid £9.95 for the carvery - brilliant value. The pub is beautifully decorated; of course it was busy but the service was excellent. It still retains a local feel but definitely book if you want a meal. Thank you!!!!
