Not bad food for the price, but we hit on a bad night for the chips, they were small and crispy not at all what we were expecting after previous reviews and the lasagne was covered in a tomato sauce which overpowered it. Atmosphere was spoilt by a group at the bar who were extremely loud and their language left something to be desired. We shan't be rushing back.

Visited a number of times as the Sheff is our local and we have never been disappointed, the food is great, portion sizes are excellent so we have no idea what is on the desert menu. There is a decent range of beers on tap, and the staff is always welcoming, and nothing is too much trouble. All in all a great local which we will continue to support.

A first visit to this local pub just for food not accommodation, first impressions are good, it's a big old building that is kept in good order , parking is around the back which is well lit and tidy. Inside the pub its cosy & welcoming a couple of electric fires to give an impression of a real coal fire which would be nice, as its such a traditional interior, a Scottish tartan plaid wall paper , pictures of deer on table place mats gives a country feel to the place , so the menu is nice & small with a good choice of homemade pies , burgers , chicken ,and some veggie options , they also have a nice carvery with 4 different meats good selection of vegetables which all looked very fresh. I went specifically for the mince beef suet pie but they don't make them any longer for the daily menu which has not been removed , but they still have it only on the Sunday carvery as an option. The selection of drinks are good lots on draught to choose from or non alcoholic choices too , food is traditional in nature but good , overall a 4 of of 5

Very disappointed to have to rate my experience but having booked a New Year's Eve Dinner for 4 people at 8pm back at the beginning of December I was rang 3 days before the evening to tell me I couldn't eat at 8pm as they Newwere finishing service at 6pm!!!!.... Where else at such short notice was I likely to make another booking after being offered 6pm to eat. Too short notice and they needed to have decided on timings much sooner. Do they want to be a Dining pub restaurant or just a pub !!!!

Attended just before Christmas as a family group of 7. Firstly, great to see the Sheff open again. We had the Christmas lunch. The food was excellent. Thick slices of turkey, great vegetable selection (served separately) and extra gravy for those who like to flood the plate, portions were huge but the food was delicious. Good choice of desserts too. Had a good look at the carvery and the food looked just as good, Great choice of beers at the bar with a few independent beers on tap plus the usual suspects and a good choice of draught lager too! Staff were brilliant. Attentive without being intrusive and anticipated all pur needs. If you live locally, please use it or lose it. Be great to have the place back as a community venue. We will be back

Puddings, brownie, lemon meringue, and hot chocolate fudge amazing. Fresh home cooked, great portions, beautiful tasting food, great atmosphere, clean and cosy. You can't ask for more.

After hearing many good reports, we booked for a meal yesterday. The first thing that we noticed was the 'buzz' about the place - happy people! The refurbishment has been sympathetic, and the use and decor of the "Pool Room" is to be applauded. The food was REALLY enjoyable, and the service was brilliant. We had the carvery, and will return to sample the menu. With 3 Lagers, 3 Ciders, and John Smith's on tap, plus 4 Cask Ales on offer; there's a lot of choice at the bar (I'm a fan of Timothy Taylor's "Landlord").

I don’t usually do this but I think it’s important to share. We have been staying in the village of Burton with our small dog and some friends. We popped into the Sheffield Arms Friday and we had a fantastic day. The lady behind the bar was friendly, attentive and despite been rushed off her feet remained polite and courteous even when she had some issues with the pumps. Everybody respected her and her dealing with it in a calm manner. We returned later in the evening to see the band perform. She had moved from the bar and the young lad working again was great. Having noticed us come in she came over apologised for any delay she might have caused us earlier in the day and thanked us for returning. It didn’t appear that she was working during in the evening but was there keeping on top of everything along side the bar man. The locals were saying how great of a barmaid she is and that the landlady was lucky to have her. Having been told about a burger van attending the Saturday we returned. What a difference. The barmaid or so we thought on the Saturday sat behind the bar vaping, swearing loudly, barely able to string sentence with out some form obscenity! Having gone outside for a cigarette my husband returned to say that there is the landlady. He’d been speaking to someone who had said that she always behaved like this and that in turn locals had began avoiding the pub unless they knew for sure one of the two staff members were working. It is a real shame that in this case the person at the top is failing what is a fantastic pub with great staff. (Based on the two we had the pleasure of Friday) we’ve been told that her behaviour is something of a running joke within the village with her regularly getting drunk and performing like a wild animal abusing customers verbally. Perhaps she should consider a different career. Hospitality is not suited to everyone. On a positive note, the lady working friday. You are brilliant at your job, a lovely person and how you managed alone under the circumstances without losing any of your grace is admirable. She never stopped cleaning, serving and hosting. You should apply for management positions. You certainly meet the criteria.

A really strange place this and to be honest I am surprised it is still in business. The place was very unwelcoming and the bar tender would rather carry drinks to the tables of locals then serve you when your stood at the bar. No food was on offer, not even breakfast. A strange selection of beers with only half decent beer being bottles of black sheep! I only found out about the food situation after booking - after all I did search for bed AND BREAKFAST! The village where it’s located is quite nice and scenic, therefore the pub doesn’t appear to fit the bill. Now although the address on here states Scunthorpe as the address it’s actually quite a few miles outside, and when I asked where the nearest food was they said “in Scunthorpe” It was cheap £30 and that really is the only thing going for it. Showers and toilets are communal in the corridor. Suppose you get what you pay for but I wasn’t particularly looking for cheap. It’s a real shame because you can see the potential in the place - just needs some different thinking.

My friends and I visited the pub for some food on Sunday 1/8/21. Firstly, the young girl who served us needs a supply of masks. If she's going to wear one then at least make sure it's clean. It was a one use mask and it was absolutely filthy. Gross! Secondly, my friend spilt some drink on the table, we asked for a cloth and she used one that was black, it looked like it had been used to wash out ashtrays. Fortunately I had some antibac wipes in my bag and we used them to clean everything, place mats, cutlery, glasses. However, food was freshly cooked and piping hot but we were all very wary of eating and ending up ill. Pub really needs to up the hygiene as it ruined what could be a lovely place to go.

I went for a family meal latest night (9th february) and I have never had such horrendous service or been so humiliated in my life! Here's a run down of my night: I arrive and stand at the bar waiting to be served. The lady finishes serving a customer and ignores me. A gentleman behind the bar serves someone then proceeds to talk to his friends ignoring me. The lady who ignored me then seated people who arrive after I did. I then sit down to watch and wait 15 minutes before I have to ask for menus for me and my family. We order our food and are told there is a wait (unsure why his was advised as we was given our food before the table next to us who ordered 1st. The person who brought the food ran from the table faster than Usain Bolt not asking if we wanted/needed anything. We are ignored for a further 10 minutes. I get the attention of the original lady who ignored me at the start of the night. It turns out our side was never written down and was sarcastically told salt is on the table when I had meant to say vinegar was needed. No spoons given for the mayo and tomato sauce and the smallest ramekin of sauce was given for a family of 3. It took a further 10 minutes for this and the sides to be brought out. My partners jumbo fish was not jumbo and missing fish inside (ie it wass half a fish). The chef/tenant running through pub came out of the kitchen and all I can say is she was clearly looking for an argument! She had ripped the fish apart and like I say proceeded to argue with us! Tables was staring at us! All other tables was attended to as you would expect and we was ignored! The lady who ignored us all night told the table next to us they could only have 1 menu to look at desers as all others was out! Well all I'll say is if the 3 on our table had of been taken after our order had been taken you would of had the other 3 you needed. I work in customer service and the service we received was nothing short of shocking. It's a shame as I love in the village and I will never return not even for a drink!

My husband was born and bred in this lovely village. He has seen many people behind the bar in the Sheffield Arms. We have been in the pub twice this week and have been let down both times. I was called a fella, I clearly look like a woman . Waited about 5 minutes for someone to serve us after being called a fella. We asked for some drinks tonight, wanted fruity cider but they didn't have any so we got cider with blackcurrant, paid for blackcurrant but if we got a dash that is an exaggeration. We got served drinks then two minutes later got told to drink up and leave, as if anyone can drink that quick. The little guy behind the bar just stood with his arms crossed looking at us. The tall guy just told us he did us a favour serving us then quickly walked away. When they put the drinks on the bar, they put them down with such force some of the drink spilled out. Why they would put people that don't come from a nice village into a village pub is ridiculous,

OK we went to this long standing pub in December and found the new young landlord to have an attitude of cleverness. He argued with me which in my book is fatal hence my review. I knew what I ordered an he was very pushy to say otherwise. The food however was acceptable until I realized their health award was zero or there abouts! Bad combination having poor hygiene AND an attitude. We had pork and crackling as a Christmas pre ordered special. Very nice no problems. Since December or January this year new management and to be honest I've been reluctant to return so I can't comment on the current situation. Give it a go and then review on here?

Staying at local caravan site who assured us it was dog friendly. Popped in late afternoon to enquire if it was ok to eat that evening with our dog and were told by a gentlemen that that would be fine. Arrived and was told could only sit in the corner of the pub which was occupied the other two tables were low small round ones totally unacceptable for eating we understood we could not eat in the restaurant but thought the bar was ok why was this not told to us when we enquire earlier in the day !!!! They had no traditional ales on no Kroneburg larger and when asked for some bottled water was told they dont sell it !!!!!! The restaurant was empty and pub very quiet I WONDER WHY !! We left and drove to a lovely friendly restaurant where we had a nice meal. We definitely won't be recommending this pub to the other caravaners.

Went for a meal with a few friends. My friend had a large fish. It looked huge on the plate but after eating a few mouthfuls it was evident that it was the pub's sacrificed goldfish amidst a ton of batter. My friend complained to the 'waiter', who clearly had no experience and went to seek advice. He needn't have bothered. He apologised with a huge smile on his face, (he clearly needs to work on this...) and no more was done. My friend then asked if it was possible to have a dessert or a coffee, perhaps free of charge to compensate for the appalling meal. Again, off the waiter went to seek advice, and when he came back, told my friend that she couldn't do this.At this point we decided that we didn't want to spend any more money in an establishment where customer service clearly wasn't valued so we went to pay. After waiting at the bar for at least ten minutes, whilst the barman laughed and joked with customers at the bar while completely ignoring us, we eventually managed to pay, (although to be honest no one could have blamed us if we had simply walked out). The whole experience wasn't one we want to repeat so will not be returning. Sorry Sheffield Arms, you really need to try harder...

Visited for lunch, service was disorganised and slow. Did not feel the kitchen was prepared to serve food, which turned out to be poor for the money, Triple cooked chips were soggy and tepid. Fish cakes tasted okay but were greasy and competing with the chips for times cooked, what would of been a lovely fresh salad was spoiled by too much dressing it would have been better with a light vinegarette to balance the grease and no garden peas. It's a while since the last poor meal I had in this pub and can say I will not return to eat.

Quite a cosy pub interior and friendly waiters however, the food was terrible. We booked a table for an early Christmas Eve dinner and ordered the steak and ale pie. While the flavour was fine, all three servings must have been on their second or third re-heating because the meat was so dehydrated you could barely cut it. The pastry was also dried out and completely stuck to the dried meat underneath. I'm sure that if this had been freshly prepared it would have been absolutely fine so how on Earth could any reasonable cook have allowed this to have been served to customers? In addition, the chips smelt and tasted overwhelmingly of old cooking oil and therefore again, were inedible. To add insult to injury, one of our party ordered a black coffee which was so pale it looked like weak tea and clearly was instant. We took this back to the bar, expecting a new cup but half an hour later this had still not arrived. When we settled our bill, the barman made a point that we would not be charged for the coffee. I should think not!! Although three different members of staff enquired about our meal, and were given the feedback described above, not one offered any good-will gesture or recompense for such a poor experience. What a shame - we will not be returning. Having recently moved into the area we were hoping this would become our 'local'.

We booked a table for 4 and sat in a cosy corner of the pub which was decorated beautifully for Christmas. Our food order was taken by the waiter who was extremely helpful. The menu was extensive with a good price range. I opted for a steak burger with onion rings and thrice cooked chips. It was gorgeous - the best onion rings I've ever had and the chips were divine. This dish came in at just under £6 which is astonishing value for money. Will definitely be returning!

Been going to the Sheffield Arms in Burton-on-Stather on and off for 40 years. It is again under new management with a new menu and new chef in the kitchen.Food was certainly hearty. The steak and ale pie was very tasty although should have been served a bit hotter and possibly with an option of smaller portions for the ladies, my wife had to leave half of hers! The taster deserts were a good idea and the staff were friendly.

Having see my son and two of his best friends of the past 10 years of to their end of year school prom, the proud parents decided on a meal to celebrate. Six of us sat down to eat in the restaurant. Charlotte the waitress could not have been more welcoming. I had the pulled pork salad as a starter which was very tasty. The Beef and Ale pie for main course was amazing, Good size portions, not too big but sufficient, chips to die for. Sadly I had no room for a desert, which if I am honest was very restricted because I am diabetic. I would how highly recommend the Sheffield Arms, six very happy customers who WILL be back for more.....

Best Landlord & Landlady ever !I have been visiting the Sheffield Arms for almost 50 years now and have known around a dozen Landlords during that time, many of them good, some of them indifferent, to put it kindly but none of them ever ran the pub and restaurant with such cheerful and friendly efficiency or with such high quality food on offer as the current incumbents.Gillian and Jim are a credit to their profession and long may they continue to run this village pub like the gem that it really is.

The Sheffield Arms is a typical English pub run by a lovely couple, Jim and Gillian who are the friendliest of landlords/ladies you could ever meet.Jim is the chef as well as the landlord and runs a classical family friendly pub with no music, no anti-social behaviour, a delight to visit these days. The food is excellent, not fancy or flashy but good and wholesome and served perfectly by cheerful staff. Nothing is too much trouble and these are people who take an obvious pride in delivering quality food and drink with great humour and skill.

Visited this pub early one Saturday evening while visiting family in Scunthorpe. We arrived quite early and it was fairly quiet then but it was buzzing when we left over two hours later. All the staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful. Service was prompt and attentive without being fussy and we were not at all rushed. There was plenty of choice on the menu and a specials board too. Also a couple of real ales on the bar. There were five of us in the party and we all had a starter and a main course and everyone was very happy with the quality of the food. All in all well worth a visit.

Had a meal there tonight which was very disappointing. My steak tasted almost off, the chips were slightly under-cooked and the gammon tasted smoked. In fairness, we weren't charged for one of the meals, but as we hadn't eaten out in ages, we were gutted. The staff were very good and even the chef came to talk to us. The trainee waitress was doing well too. Real shame though because it's just another local eatery off our list of places to go. Maybe we were just unlucky.

Reviewed this place around a year ago following a visit where we left before the food was served due to rude member of staff and shocking service, however, we have been back twice during the last week and on both occasions the food was excellent - home cooked not your usual microwave fare that we see in most of the pubs around Scunthorpe. Doom Bar ale was excellent and all staff were very efficient and friendly. When we received our bill there was an incorrect drinks item on there which was promptly removed along with deducting a pint from our bill by way of an apology - not many places would do that nowadays!! Keep up the good work

We ate here at the weekend 2nd Aug 2014. From the minute you walked in you got a very warm welcome. The place has been refurbished since we were last there and it's been done up beautifully, very in keeping with such an old pub. The menu choice and specials board had a good varied choice. The starters and main were excellent, so much food we took some home for the dog, unfortunately it left no room for a pudding, but we'll leave that for another time as we will definitely be returning. The waitress was a breathe of fresh air, so friendly and efficient, a great asset. Although the food was a bit more pricey than other pubs we've eaten at I think that was reflected in the quality and quantity. We would not hesitate in recommending The Sheffield Arms.

We had our wedding reception for 20 people at the Sheffield Arms on 9th May. We live locally and are a mature couple and this was the perfect place for us to hold a small, intimate reception for our close family and a few close friends. We had the restaurant area to ourselves for the evening.Jim and Gillian seemed to enjoy helping us plan the event. We offered our guests a choice from a small menu that we chose together and everyone said how much they enjoyed the food which was tasty and beautifully presented. We had peach bellinis on arrival which were really refreshing and made by the staff. The tables looked absolutely lovely as we arrived. We had music of our own choosing played throughout the evening.Nothing was too much trouble for Jim and Gillian and the rest of their staff. Our compliments to the chef Neil and we offer our enormous thanks to all concerned for making this such a memorable occasion.

So far we've eaten a couple of times in the bar as they allow us to bring our dog. So we thought we'd give the restaurant side a go when family came up to stay from London.Firstly it nice to see that there is a good head of staff and they all know what they are doing. Our order was taken swiftly and the food arrived in good time. Everyone enjoyed the generous portions and commented on how tasty it was. The girl serving our table was very polite took our dessert orders, again the portions where generous and the quality higher than you'd expect in a pub/restaurant. At the end of the meal, drinks and desserts included we'd spent less than £20 a head. Great value, great service and delicious well prepared and presented food. Will be back for more for sure. Full marks.
