The best restaurants serving British food in South East

After an enjoyable cycle ride along the coast at Selsey, we decided to try the Lifeboat Inn for a drink and meal. We were pleasantly surprised; food and service was good and staff were friendly and attentive. The pub had a relaxed vibe and so no idea what previous negative reviews are all about…

We visited Horsham today and chose this pub to pop in to for a lunch time drink. We certainly will not be returning. The landlady was rude and unwelcoming. We asked how to access the garden, as dogs were not allowed inside. She pointed to the door that I had just gone through and said “walk round the building”! She served up the wrong drink and then rudely accused my husband of asking for something different. And, when I asked where the toilets were she begrudgingly paused her conversation with another member of staff and silently, pointed to the stairs, which, were unlit. I had to use my phone torch to see which door to use! We were going to eat there, but chose to leave instead. Dreadful…

Lovely atmosphere, friendly staff and good food.

Loved our stay, the room was so nicely decorated, staff were friendly, breakfast was delicious. Loved the extra touches of the tea & cake and brandy night cap station for guests, and the terrace out the back was a real sun trap to relax. Would love to come back and stay again!

Food was ok. Deep fried Camembert was delicious but to only get 5 pieces of calamari for £12 was deeply disappointing. Will take me a long time to get over that.

I loved the local ambient, it feels like being surrounded by family.

Best fish and chips, wouldn't ever go anywhere else in Alton. Really friendly staff and such great prices. Couldn't reccomend more

nice area, big space, plenty of seating, welcoming. broken toilet facilities, could do with a make over. the chicken pie was horrible. the chops were well cooked but tasted a little tangy. the burger was ok, average basic meat. the fish was nice with good batter. the sausage was very pale, it wasnt good quality. sadly we wouldnt return

It has been my local for quite a few years now, and the ownership has changed 2 or 3 times, and I can say that this time, the brewery has gotten it right with the new person's in charge

Fantastic meal and service for a family celebration. We all really enjoyed our main meals and managed to find room for a delicious pudding! Really friendly staff and will definitely be visiting again. Would highly recommend.

We had a lovely meal here. Sunday lunch, food and service all excellent. Landlord fitted us in and even moved his family members to another table to accommodate us We had been to one other local. pub.beforehand but they couldn’t squeeze us in there. Very glad we came here instead on recommendation from a local couple We had travelled down from London to take our 3 children to observatory centre nearby The meal and pub was the real highlight of our day. Kids were made to feel welcome and everyone enjoyed the food immensely. We would love to return!

The milkshake wasn’t blended enough so it was literally just like drinking vanilla milkshake with huge chunks of chocolate bar at the bottom. Very disappointing.

We chose to stop here specifically as there was a rapid charger for our EV. The grounds are relaxing and quiet. The conservatory restaurant had a good atmosphere and the service friendly and courteous. We had the Gnocchi and Ploughmans for lunch. Both were very tasty and well presented. Puddings were light and refreshing. Prices are not cheap but good food is worth paying for. Having tried out the restaurant and general ambience we are very likely to arrange a weekend break here soon.

Disappointed with this Costa branch. The shop consistently closes earlier than advertised, which is very inconvenient. On top of that, I’ve overheard staff using inappropriate language, which is unprofessional and off-putting. What’s more concerning is seeing staff leaving with large bags of food at the end of the day. It leaves an impression that food waste might not be handled properly or fairly. This branch really needs better management and customer focus to uphold Costa’s usual standards.
