The Rose Restaurant in Dover

Went for lunch. Had the starter and main from the set menu. Small ‘fine dining’ plates but oh so delicious and beautifully cooked and served. Service was excellent and friendly and service charge was included.

We had a lovely mid-afternoon Sunday lunch here on Mother's Day. Lots to recommend. First, great service all round. Second, fabulous mocktails for drivers. Third, great takes on the conventional Sunday lunch menu, with a real individuality to the served meal rather than heaped up from a carvery. Fourth, deep flavours - the duck rice was just incredible, making the most of the fat and absorbent rice. Fifth, great atmosphere and decor. Sixth, value - we felt the meal was worth every penny. Would not hesitate to recommend.

Restaurant: really well curated menu. The desserts are particularly good. Lovely atmosphere and very friendly staff. Feels like a friendly neighbourhood pub, but with high quality food and cool decor. Hotel: I really enjoyed our room. Beautiful lighting and a clever use of space. Nice touches like a record player and some vinyl. Cool design. It’s a really atmospheric, characterful place to stay, right on the high street with the reassuring hum of local activity from outside. Will be back!

Eat here, don't sleep here. We stayed for a night on the winter warmer deal, which was overall great value for money. It included a three course meal, which was good. But the room itself, despite being nicely decorated, is a light-sleepers worst nightmare. The church bells sound until late and then go off early, and the sound-proofing is bizarre. You will hear a truck pulling up outside and a person coughing in a communal area like they are by your bedside, but I never heard a sound from anyone else in any of the rooms. They do supply ear plugs but these should be made more obvious. And, apparently, they do warn about the noise on the website but as this was booked by my partner, I had no idea it would be that loud. Again, stay away if you are a light sleeper ( I wish I knew beforehand).

Mwalk jn guests for the restaurant. Great food and service. The cocktails are a great selection and well mixed too. The fig tart was absolutely fabulous while the fish pie was probably one of the best I had. Would definitely recommend

Stunning pub/restaurant with rooms, recently refurbished to a very high standard. The rooms are delightful, and several are dog friendly (with prior agreement). The food is exceptional, and all the staff were lovely. Highly recommended, not least for the lovely location on Deal's charming High Street.

After returning to give The Rose a 2nd chance, we left disappointed again after poor bar service. Upon entering the bar, after 20 minutes we weren’t offered drinks and it was clear we weren’t welcome. Unless you’re a couple you’re told to ‘move down into the seats’ as though you’re at school.

We ate in the restaurant. Top end menu with some classics such as Mac and cheese and burgers if you’re feeling less adventurous. Nice cocktail menu. Wine is £40-80 mark for a bottle. Mains £20-30. There is a kids menu during daytime.

Can’t comment on rooms as I’ve only eaten here, but the food alone is noteworthy. Recently popped in for lunch with a friend and had the most incredible 3 course set menu. Additionally our servers were so friendly and attentive, we were asked about food allergies more than once, and had a nice chat about other local places to visit. Will be returning as soon as I can!

Warm and welcoming pub. We didn’t stay here, but popped in during a frosty December evening and had a great couple of glasses of mulled wine. The staff were very welcoming and the atmosphere was so cozy, really liked the interiors.

Beautifully decorated boutique rooms, with lovely attention to detail. The breakfast and dinner were delicious.

This is not an inexpensive restaurant but it fails to match the price and the hype. Service was terrible, the table adjacent to ours was seated after us and yet served before us. We had to call the server before we could place our order. Food portions were small and the taste very average. We decided not to leave a gratuity due to the negative service levels but discovered that a 10% service had been added to our bill. This is no where advised beforehand, not even on the base of the menu and is unacceptable.

Finding ourselves unexpectedly in Deal, and our usual restaurant seeming to have had a change of approach, we opted for lunch at The Rose. It was superb. Every item of food was innovative and fresh-tasting - turbot, monkfish, pork and even the humble olives - all prepared and delivered in really interesting ways. The choices of wine were similarly inspired. We opted for a delicious natural “orange” wine which one sees rarely on wine lists. The service was excellent, though the restaurant was fairly quiet. We shall return.

We were looking forward to an evening of fine dining after having read the review by Jay Rayner. Obviously the chef isn't the same anymore or he's totally given up. We checked the menu online and made our choice. When getting the menu in the restaurant one of the dishes mentioned online wasn't on there. Another one wasn't available. This limited the choice to 2 mains, none of them to our liking. So we looked at the 'classics' and ordered a hamburger. Obviously we thought that the classics woud hav a modern, fine dining twist. To our disappointment what we got was a quite average, too salty mediocre burger. The fries were certainly not handcut and the mayonnaise come from a bottle. Any chef can easily make fresh mayo but as I said this guy has given up. The starters were pictures of haute cuisine but involved no cheffing skills whatsoever. Burrata with peas and broadbeans and turbot crudo of with grapefruit. Overall very disappointing! We ate ou every night of our 6 nights stay in Deal and The Rose was by far the worst place maybe because we had such high expectations...

It took over 15 minutes to order 2 glasses of wine, when the bar was very quite. What annoyed me is the bill, automatically add 10% service which should really be discretionary. The table was dirty despite them sort of cleaning it. On the plus side the staff were friendly and the background music was good

Fabulous couple’s breakfast chilled vibe and delicious options. I had the Rose benedict which was perfect and my Partner had the Black pig sausage and beans. Both dishes were served beautifully. Service was great with the right balance of attention without being overbearing. Both our breakfasts and coffee cost about £34 including service which was fair.

Went for Sunday lunch and started with a great cocktail. Our cold starters seemed to take ages to arrive (estimate 45 mins) even though the restaurant did not appear to be that busy. The mains also took ages but were fantastic (apart from the attempt to roast Jersey royals - why do that?!). We didn't dare order desert as would could have been there hours more. Such a shame that they haven't sorted the service. Our waitress was having to make cocktails and serve tables.

I really enjoyed the atmosphere. The warm welcome through to the world class cocktails and food were delivered by an attentive team of staff.

It seems the customer is never right if you raise any concerns. Whilst my asparagus and hake were tasty, my partners plate of pebbles from the beach (from our view the clams were missing ) and one tiny rib of lamb were disappointing to say the least. How can one tiny cutlet be described as a rack of lamb. And fries served in a chipped, enamel bowl, may be shabby chic to management but to others chipped enamel is a food hazard. This is now our second underwhelming experience. We will not be going back. Our dining server was sweet, but inexperienced. I suspect staff turnover is very high. And I don’t understand why they would serve such mediocre and overpriced wine. Across the road is a fantastic wine bar serving excellent wine and really tasty cheese, which we indulged in as we had left The Rose feeling hungry.

Great food and drink but the rooms are quite echoey so can be hard to hear one's companions. And the service needs to improve a lot. Components of our order were forgotten, and then starters brought before we'd even received all our canapés. Everyone on the floor was charming, but none seemed to have been trained. Please can the management get a grip on this so the service can match the excellent food.

Over priced & severely lacking in atmosphere. Sunday roast consisted of half a chicken breast & a chicken thigh (undercooked) two radishes, chard & 5 roast potatoes between two. Did not resemble a Sunday roast in the slightest. Go somewhere else instead.

Truly fab food with very good service. My roasted Hake was a treat & the puddings...o my! Highly recommend.

This was exactly the lunch we were looking for. It was a proper meal, with starter,main and dessert, as opposed to the small plates/tapas service offered in many places now. All the food was excellent. We started with lightly steamed new asparagus with a well made and tasty hollandaise sauce. It was garnished with pea shoots which were perfectly fresh and delightful to eat. (Mentioned because they are so often half dead stringy bits!) Mains were feather steak with cavalo nero and toasted hazelnuts. The steak was carefully cooked, seared on the outside and medium rare, and had a flavoursome sauce/gravy. Boulangere potatoes were crispy on the edges and tender within, again with a good flavour. Rhubarb frangipane tart with slightly gingery pastry and thick cream went down very well. The Walmer Ale and glass of grenache were both very drinkable. Our fingers are crossed that all will still be as good when we go back!

Food was absolutely excellent at this place and the service was very attentive too. Particular shout out for Joe, the male waiter but the two female servers were excellent too. Very knowledgeable about the menu and cocktails. Restaurant is on the pricey side and I feel that it must miss out locals as a market mid week but food was perfect.

We received outstanding cooking and a pleasant environment for our early evening meal. The menu is short but carefully chosen to enable good balance and quick service. The staff were pleasant and efficient.We enjoyed our experience very much.

Had lunch on Saturday. The menu is very limited which always gives me confidence that the kitchen knows what they are doing, which proved to be the case. Front of house a bit ramshackle. Offered our main dish whilst still eating our starters and had to remind the waiter to bring our wine. But ally that to a warm atmosphere with young staff, children welcome, and dogs sitting happily under the tables, I would trade service perfection for a relaxed, friendly environment. Really enjoy this place. Food is not bad either.

Excellent new menu - the food was outstanding and hugely enjoyable. The wines we choose were also excellent. Overall the dining experience was faultless and of a very high standard. Warm welcome even though we hadn’t booked. Very imaginative menu, and I undoubtedly had the best fish I’ve ever eaten. Great, interesting decor and lively atmosphere.

We came for a Sunday lunch which was served promptly by staff. There is not a huge choice of dishes, but what we ordered was very well done. We particularly enjoyed the dessert flavour combinations (coffee/chocolate cake and buttermilk/blood orange/almond dessert). The real selling point for the Rose is their luscious interior design,but nonetheless the food was very tasty and served in a relaxed setting.

Wonderful breakfast at the Rose. Coffees, flat whites, were perfect. I had Black Pug sausages and beans on sourdough toast. Spicy and wonderful. My wife had eggs in a skillet with spinach and other great things. Lovely room, first class service and a nice change. Only downside was the odd loo with a shared towel.

This place is a little gem! I have resisted going there because it’s a step up in and I have a wheelchair but it was nice. The atmosphere had a really Friday night vibe. We had Taramasalata, burger and fries and the the best sticky toffee pudding I’ve had. All very good. I will go back for lunch it’s so relaxed.

We spent a Friday evening at the Rose for dinner and drinks. The restaurant space is cosy and we would recommend booking ahead. We both had a cocktail to start, one sloe gin cocktail and a dark stormy (spiced rum) - they were fantastic. For starter we had the croquettes and fried olives, both were great for nibbles. Mains were mac and cheese, and a burger, both of which were decent, though the burger was a little overdone because I had asked for it to be pink. The highlight of the meal was the pudding - THE DUTCH BABY, with buttermilk ice cream and jam. It was to die for, highly recommend ordering this. One between two of you is more than enough.

6 of us went for a girls dinner on the 19th October, the food was great. Generous portions, interesting food well executed and fantastic cocktails. The wine menu was great and really affordable (compared to London prices)

We visited with friends for an informal baby shower on a Sunday afternoon. From start to finish the staff were so helpful and accommodating. The food was Insanely good. We chose a selection of starters and sides to share between everyone and honestly all of the dishes were amazing. I would most certainly recommend The Rose. We sat in the garden area, which was beautiful - but the main restaurant itself is so well thought out and decorated.Absolutely perfect afternoon.

The poor reviews are a little unfair in my view. The owners have gone to a lot of trouble on the detail, the staff are numerous and professional, and the food was varied and packed with flavour.I would love a breakfast / brunch / dinner venue like the Rose on my doorstep, so am not sure what people expect these days.Dinner - smoked haddock with samphire was delicious as was the guinea fowl curry and both very good value. Starter sea trout a bit expensive for what it was, but taramasalata a decent choice nice and creamy with toast. Chocolate prune cake nice to round off. The sun terrace was a great place to catch a few rays over a £5 cocktail during happy hour. Breakfast a nice change from the full English you can get anywhere. Granola and yoghurt, and toast and preserve great economy options. Scandi breakfast tasty different and light, mushrooms and curd a pleaser. Sausage and beans on toast too much fennel and a few bits of sausage, not worth the £8 and quite heavy. Coffee very strong, but extra milk asked for and provided. Very chic surroundings restaurant in one half and bar equally luxurious in the other. We stayed two nights in the largest room which was great , coffee machines on each landing with biscuits and water a great idea. A few small points - pillows a bit hard but Ok, room was very hot but a fan was provided. Unfortunately these days due to health and safety you can’t open the window more than 3 inches which is a shame. Room was over the high street so there was some church bell and seagull noise overnight. Also drunks making a noise, the Hotel should complain to the police. However, ear plugs are provided in the room and were used ! So we had a great weekend in Deal thanks to all the staff for a great welcome.

We have now stayed at the Rose twice in the last month and love it. All the staff are friendly, chatty and very helpful. The breakfast is amazing with real variety of choice, we have not eaten in evening yet as we have been out and about, but it is on our list for next time we are down. Again menu looks amazing and good value.

I stayed at The Rose with my mother for two heavenly nights, and we ate at The Rose with a friend on the first night. The service was easy, warm, chatty, efficient, and we were made to feel at home. Our friend requested an unusual cocktail and the barman was completely relaxed about letting her create her own drink. We drank prosecco in very comfortable lounge seats and then moved into the restaurant for a delicious and inventive meal, with exceptionally good vegetables. A lovely evening and one to remember.

Went in on a whim. Luckily they efficiently found us a space (however the table was booked out later so the service was very rushed). No complaints however, we hadn't booked. The food was higher-end than we were expecting so of course this was reflected in the bill, however it was very tasty, some dishes were good and some were excellent. The really good thing about this place however is the decor and atmosphere, absolutely buzzing and bags of character.

My wife and I were looking for somewhere different to try in Deal and were very happy with our visit to the Rose. Despite Friday early afternoon being a busy period the waiting staff were friendly and helpful. The wine (pitpoul) was perfectly chilled. For starter I had the nettle and goat’s cheese soup which was delicious and my wife (opting for the set menu) had a variation on bruschetta. For main I had the crispy lamb and my wife had the pork escalope both of which were delicious. We finished off with Apple cake and salted chocolate mousse which were equally tasty. Well presented food, cooked perfectly with good service. We will happily return here.

Living locally we thought we'd give the recently renovated Rose a try on a Sunday, We'd been told it was popular so made a reservation in advance which was good as they were full (quite a few who were staying in the hotel on a package) with some people being turned away.

I think I saw The Rose reviewed in The Times and hence the visit for lunch. Very welcoming and friendly staff. Comfortable and airy room. A bit let down by the food. The cauliflower and fried egg starter was a bit greasy but burnt rather then caramelised sage leaves weren’t nice. My wife’s beetroot starter was excellent. I enjoyed my mushroom ragu with soft polenta but the crispy lamb main course was fatty.

This is a restaurant with friendly staff and a good choice of well cooked food , it isn’t fine cuisine but everything was fresh and tasted well prepared. .

We had travelled from London for a day out in Deal with our baby and stumbled across The Rose. We had been looking for a place to eat and had seen one place with a sign ‘No buggies’ which was disappointing and we hadn’t seen before. The Rose however could not have been more hospitable and welcoming and the food was delicious. A lovely atmosphere and great food. Totally recommend.

I ate at the Rose tonight. It was the third time and each time the food has been really good and the service has been excellent. Such a great addition to Deal.

I was very disappointed in the Rose and really wanted to believe all the hype, but I was very disappointed and it was the food that let them down. There were no true vegetarian options, the only offering was an artery clogging macaroni cheese, that was so rich it was impossible to eat it all and it also contained Parmesan which is definately not vegetarian. Two of the other three people in our party had the burgers which were acceptable, but grossly overpriced for the volume they ended up with on their plates. The other member of our group had two starters as they could find nothing else they like on the rather minimal menu.

Most TA reviews are either totally negative or rave about this place. Ate dinner there last night with my partner. It’s sort of OK but definitely not great. My starter of leek with grilled cheese was a disappointment. My partner’s taramasalata was delicious and made there. My main dish of fish soup was pretty good but the butternut squash dish rather bland. The house white is reasonably priced at £18 but was pretty grim. Service was friendly and prompt. We shared a sticky toffee type pud. £35 per head inc. service isn’t a fortune but we won’t be bothering to give the place another go. There are a number of better places to eat in Deal.

Visiting Deal for the first time, keen to see the revamp at the Rose that had read so much about in various press etc. so booked a table for lunch. The place was buzzing and it certainly looks terrific - very stylish and lovely Christmas decorations were in place; it felt warm & inviting. We were given a nice table in centre of the room. Chose a variety of dishes from an interesting menu, but only criticism would be that although I had booked for 12.30pm, as a couple of the group were on an early afternoon train back to London, it took too long for some very simple dishes to come to the table. We were a group of just 7, so not an enormous number, and some of us just had starters with pudding/coffee after - but waited far too long for first round of dishes/starters to be delivered.. such that it became something of a concern that we would receive food in time for the those on the 2.40 train......... 2 hours for a Saturday lunch in a brasserie style setting should have been ample.... but felt like a rush at the end and did have to ask wait staff a couple of times where food was, as those around us who had arrived after us were definitely receiving their dishes before us! Apart from that would be happy to recommend. Others mention issues with service in their reviews, so something that should be looked at to ensure 5 star review in future.

Wow. Have loved The Rose since it opened in its refurbished state this year. The food and decor are fabulous. Even better, they’ve obviously upped their game recently with flawless, attentive, and first rate staff. We’ve had two fantastic Sunday lunches in the last two weeks, and note the New Year offer looks stunning also. Can’t recommend highly enough, wonderful all round and congrats to the whole team

We had a fabulous meal at The Rose tonight. The hake with cauliflower and spinach puree was delicious, and the pudding (Dutch Baby with ice cream and spiced apple compote) was to die for. The service was speedy, with extremely friendly waiting staff. We will be back.

Manageress unbelievably rude. Poor service, long wait time, average food! After our third visit to The Rose we will not be returning.
