Pretty down to earth golfers bar with bar staples such as fish and chips, etc. Lots of people drinking lager in shorts

Incredible food as always! Great portions and great value! We got the Gyros which is a recent addition to the menus in the last year, battered sausage , fritters, large chips and a pot of gravy. Only have a picture of mine i’m afraid 🤣 Other half had the battered chips and most of the gravy Will always come back ❤️

I visited last year when travelling through and the place was good then so I thought I’d visit again. Bit disappointed. The food was a bit sloppily presented and the chips soggy and fish greasy. Beer disappointing too. Staff were friendly enough.

Whenever I visit my parents, we come to The Bears Head. It never disappoints-the food is excellent, the atmosphere is warm and cozy, and the staff couldn’t be more welcoming or helpful. I highly recommend it!

Cracking canalside pub. Lots of different places to sit both inside and out. You can sit and watch the canal boat's go up and down the lock. Lovely decor and friendly welcoming staff. Sunday roast was amazing, cocktails were great too. Dog friendly also.

Staff very attentive and excellent, especially Yasmin, but food ok and massive prices, wine £35 for a bottle of house wine! Lovely restaurant, even with the rowdy group of women on a hen do or similar

We visited as a family and the staff were very welcoming, especially with our children, offering us games to play which was great for the children. We had a lovely bottle of French wine which was recommended to us and I chose the fish and chips which was fantastic (and much better than a greasy chippy fish!!) My partner had the risotto which was fresh and tasty. The kids had the fantastic 3 course kids menu - just £8.75 for 3 courses, we were very impressed! We finished with a sticky toffee pudding which was clearly home made and very tasty! Overall, great service, very family friendly and delicious food. The pub is lovely and we will be back!

I was really looking forward to a pleasant Mother’s Day meal at The Horseshoe, but unfortunately, the experience was anything but. The food was basic—honestly, I would have enjoyed a microwave meal just as much. However, the real issue was the service. A teenage waitress served our table with an attitude, slamming dishes down as if we were an inconvenience. It was so noticeable that I actually asked, “What is your problem?” She bluntly responded that she was unwell and didn’t want to be there. Given that I was already feeling a little down due to personal circumstances, I chose to shrug it off. Unfortunately, the unpleasantness continued, so I eventually asked to speak to a senior staff member. When I explained my discomfort, he asked who the server was and then proceeded to force the girl to come and apologise to us. This made for an incredibly awkward and uncomfortable moment for everyone involved. On top of that, we ordered the lamb shanks, only to be told they were already sold out—at just 2 PM! For a Mother’s Day special, you’d expect them to be better prepared. To make matters worse, we were supposed to be charged £24.95 per person for the advertised Mother’s Day special (two courses), yet we were overcharged—£27.90 for one and £26.90 for the other. When I went to settle the bill, I asked if he was the owner—he confirmed he was, took my money, and offered no apology or any sign of concern for the situation. I later called back to explain the overcharge, and his response was shocking. He dismissed my concern, saying, “It’s Mother’s Day, we’re busy—what do you expect?” He then sarcastically thanked me, saying that thanks to my complaint, they had received many more complaints after mine. He also tried to justify the overcharge by saying that because I had complained, he pressed the wrong button while taking payment. He then told me he would “pay me the £3 owed.” I pointed out that £3 wasn’t even the correct amount! Overall, a disappointing experience from start to finish. Poor food, poor service, and an owner who clearly doesn’t care about customer satisfaction. I won’t be returning.

An absolutely appalling Sunday lunch. Staff in hotel reception were too busy chatting to direct us to the restaurant. On entering the restaurant there was no one to book us in, A staff member at the bar continued a casual conversation without acknowledging us. 5 minutes later took us to a table. The vegetarian item was different to the advertised item with our Wowcher deal menu. We ordered and after waiting some time but the starters didn't arrive, instead our main course arrived, we had not had our starter! An afternoon tea also arrived, but was not our order! The main course went back to the kitchen and given the assurance that we would have a completely fresh meal cooked. The server gave the excuse that the 'chef' had his mind on the wedding reception they were also catering for. Our starters were eaten and upon taking away the dirty plates we were asked if we would like to see the dessert menu! (We had not had our main courses). Our main courses arrived but bypassed us to head to a different table, eventually arriving at our table. It was as predicted, very much on the cool side. The image we had seen on Hollin Hall's website was nothing like the meal we were served. The Yorkshire Pudding was small, completely unrisen and undercooked. No stuffing was served with the chicken. The vegetables chopped into small rubbery chunks of carrots, parsnips and onion were rubbery and overcooked. All the food was lukewarm. No checkback was made during the meal. As the plates were cleared we were asked if the meal was OK, but had to be honest and report it was the worst Sunday lunch we had ever eaten. The server apologised saying they were short staffed as they had a wedding on! As we got up to leave no one came to offer the bill or take our voucher, so we had to leave it on their reception desk. No one bid us goodbye or thanked us for our custom. We felt very undervalued. I suggest on such occasions they should not even attempt to serve what they advertise as a Sunday Lunch when they are catering for weddings. Without a doubt we will NOT be returning for any reason. Avoid at all costs.
