Had an icecream board outside so thought lovely, will buy an icecream to have walking along the canal. Asked to buy to take away, got told my order (1 x cone) would get put with the cafe kitchen orders, of which there were four in front of me . . . for an icecream cone! You might want to rethink this Canal Tea Rooms . . .

An utter rip off. We stopped to buy a sandwich on our way through to a walk on Dartmoor. Not wanting to buy a supermarket sandwich, we ordered one prawn and one smoked salmon sandwich to take away. Both were £7 so we expected a sumptuous chunky homemade treat of sarnie! How wrong were we! When we opened the (huge) box they were packed in, we couldn't believe our eyes. Thin floppy bread, one not very pleasant looking slice of smoked salmon and too much sauce in the prawn sandwich which made it totally sloppy and not many prawns to boot . A small pile of wet iceburg with a tiny tomato cut in half in one corner of the box and a couple of taco crisps does not add up to paying £14 between us. Will never go there again. Can only presume as it was a takeaway they took advantage of us not being around to complain. Avoid Avoid Avoid.

We are here 19th April 2025. Excellent choice of dishes on the main menu AND specials board. Welcomed warmly by the staff. We chose to order the roast beef dinner, the portion was huge! 3 large slice of beef, 2 Yorkshire puddings, peas, broccoli, mashed swede, cabbage, carrots and cauliflower cheese. Along with roasted potatoes and plenty of gravy. A very filling portion so go there hungry. It is also a fee house so a good selection of well kept local beers. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. Plenty of tables inside and a few covered pod type tables in the quiet beer garden. Dog friendly inside and out. We will be visiting again whilst here on holiday.

We called in for something to eat but it cost us over sixteen pounds for two coffees and two bland cakes you could go to bridge house just up the road and for another three pounds you can have two large coffees with two large snacks ,etc, Welsh rarebit with masses of gammon .the decor does not suit the bakery though I suppose that's what you are paying for but l for one do not like being ripped off,why calling a bakery when you can't buy any bread or cakes as you have to order it days in advance and there isn't any thing on display in the window. They are trying to be an upmarket cafe in the wrong place.we won't bother going there again ,rather go up the road ., at least we won't be ripped off.

Stayed here for New Years Eve 2024. We chose the pub / hotel for its remote location and lack of fireworks (we have dogs and one is traumatised by loud noises) - from the moment we arrived we were made to feel very welcome. A quintessential English pub with wonderful, nicely designed and spacious rooms and very comfy beds (we had Beech and Birch). The owners and locals were very friendly and inclusive, taking care to make us feel welcome. We felt very well looked after. Breakfast was delicious (full English) and served with locally made tea and coffee (Miles, made in Porlock) and unlimited juice. We are happy that this place is only 50 mins from where we live because we will definitely be back for lunch and will find an excuse to stay again soon, I’m sure… highly recommend. Thanks to everyone there for a great stay! Sam and Nick Clarke

Stopped for food at lunchtime on a bank Holiday Monday, and was relieved the pkace wasnt rammed with diners, so could get a walk in meal. I ordered a heritage tomato and mozzarella salad for £9.50. When I order a salad from the 'Mains' part of a menu, I feel it's acceptable to expect something that leaves me feeling satiated. What arrived was 1 tomato in slices, with an equal amount of sliced mozzarella and basil leaves, on a side plate. I was very glad I'd ordered a portion of luke warm fries to accompany my main. I've been a professional vegetable grower for 20 years, and unluckily for some, a member of the Heritage Seed Library for half that time. I have never grown, nor eaten a heritage tomato that looks and tastes like something hydroponically grown, lije what was on my plate. I wondered if the out of season heritage tomato would be why this salad cost a small fortune. It would have been some consolation if that was the case. There was nothing else on the menu that I wished to risk trying ( I really nearly sent it straight back), and I had a long journey home without knowing where I could next purchase some food, so I had to put up with it. Service wasn't great. Had to ask for salt and pepper. When leaving, we both seperately said goodbye to a member of bar staff, and got zero reply. I don't think she got the memo that she's in the hospitality trade. Pretty terrible really. Beer was OK. Nice seating area by woodburner. Won't be back.
