Faultless! Experience- from friendly receptionist squeezing us in for lunch the next day, warm welcome by both manager and his assistant, efficient waiting staff, fabulous roast beef cooked to perfection with Al dente veggies and huge crispy Yorkshire pudding, we couldn’t have come across a better last minute gem! To top it all we were gazing at a beautiful herbaceous border as we enjoyed the meal. 11/10!

What a lovely experience. The whole stay was surprisingly relaxed with attentive and friendly staff, but no pretentiousness as perhaps first impressions may have given. The food was excellent, plenty of choices to suit all, and the restaurant was pleasantly arranged such that because we had a small dog we were offered a great position in the way of no one but did not feel that we were not welcomed. Sophie and Henry looked after us throughout and Brandon served me a mix of Proper Job and Guiness, which he had never heard of! We had a very comfortable room overnight in an annex, with everything you would need for an overnight stay, and the breakfast next morning was excellent. The grounds are well maintained and add to that relaxed atmosphere.

Fun experience for people watching. Really nice food but service was strange with odd waiters, over challenged junior staff and us ending up getting our coffee served with stained spoons that needed cleaning ;-)

My wife and I went there for the Exmoor food fest. First thing to say is that the service was really good. The food on the other hand was not good at all. My wife is vegetarian and there are no vegetarian main courses on the usual menu, there was one on the Exmoor food festival menu. Apparently there is a vegan menu but we were not offered this even though we told the staff that my wife is vegetarian. To start my wife had the soup which she said was nice. For main she had the gnocchi and beetroot. The gnocchi were overcooked and heavy and there was no sauce, so the whole thing so just very dry. I didn’t fancy anything off of the Exmoor food festival menu, so I chose from the main menu. To start I had the prawn, crab and crayfish salad, this was average at best and still had bits of shell in. For main I had the cured meat platter. This was standard run of the mill food that I’ve had much better (and cheaper) at other restaurants. We didn’t have desserts as we were so disappointed we didn’t want to prolong the experience. Such a shame.

17 of us went for a 50th birthday lunch. The Hartnoll did not disappoint in one single way. We had pre-meal drinks in the lovely sitting area that led on to where our table was beautifully set and looked so inviting. But the real substance of the experience i.e. the quality of the food and the service were - well, literally perfection! The salmon and fig starter, the scallops, the duck, the steaks, the fish, the burgers, just ALL of our dishes were cooked to perfection and seasoned delicately so you could taste the substance of the dish. Each and everyone of us proclaimed complete satisfaction. Our daughter does not enjoy cake so for her birthday cake we got a whole cheese wheel. We gave it to the kitchen with candles and biscuits and WOW, it was presented just like a work of art with draped grapes, greenery and it looked spectacular. Lastly the service was led by Nelson. For years Nelson has been the substance of the Hartnoll. He has a wonderful team behind him. Nelson and the chef put the special in our special day. A big thank you to them but also to the whole team. Tiverton is lucky to have such a classy, fine dining experience on our doorstep.

Rather disappointed today after many good lunches, overnight stays, a conference room booking and private room dining. A friend treated me to a full afternoon tea and on booking stated I couldn't eat cheese. We were then disappointed to discover (after we had to ask) that two sandwiches were cheese and cucumber! As there were only six sandwiches in total, my friend had to have both cheese while I had two of the others (that she may have liked). We had to ask for sugar to go with the tea, and then spoons to allow us to eat the glasses of pannacotta. Trying to top up the teapot was interesting as it contained two teabags in the top, so unless you filled the pot again, it really didn't work too well! Not quite the service we're used to receiving there (different head waiter?).

This hotel is a transit hotel on a main road best for 1 or 2 night stops. The conservatory-dining room is too small for the number of guests who want to use it and residents and non-residents who regularly use the hotel know to ask for the best tables nearest the windows. There are no reserved signs on these tables but on several occasions when about to sit down we were moved off for 'regulars' yet to appear. The bar/dining room is now an internal room due to the conservatory extension and when we were there wasn't first choice for anyone as far as we could see, especially at breakfast - was it due to the large TV showing the news? This put pressure on the conservatory area and the tables were close together. There are many non-resident guest for lunch and dinner, and also the private dining room was in use on several occasions. It made the hotel, which is not large, into a busy place. We had a suite which was in the roof and had reduced head height which gave it a cramped feeling. It was clean, well appointed and comfortable. The food was good quality, with satisfying portion sizes and well presented. The service: this varied from good to terrible. Some dining room staff managed to recognise us and be friendly from one day to the next, others did not. Breakfast was particularly haphazard. Reception acknowledged our arrival and departure only. The hotel was well maintained. When we were there the hotel was clearly maximising the use of all its assets but was it a relaxing stay for six nights? I cannot say it was, because of the competing requirements of non-residents v. ourselves who were there for 6 nights. We came away feeling we had stayed in a good quality 3 star hotel. I had two spa treatments where I did get recognised and welcomed.

Have just had the most brilliant lunch. The hotel had let us know that Halibut would be on the lunch menu. It was served with a delicious sauce an cooked to perfection. In fact, it was the best halibut we have ever had. The starter of scallops was also superb. We cannot rate the service and food highly enough. Chef Paul is a magician! For about 2 years, since we moved to the area, we have eaten in this restaurant approximately monthly. I have just realised that I have never done a review! We have just today had yet another fantastic lunch. It’s currently the Exmoor food festival and we ate off this menu, 2 courses for £20, 3 courses for £25. Their food is just out of this world and both hubby and I recommend this restaurant for not only amazing food but also outstanding service.

Called in on spec. The car park was very busy. However, the restaurant manager was very welcoming and found us a table. The menu had a good variety of foods including 2 meat Sunday roasts as well as a vegetarian and fish alternatives. Special attention was given to customer special dietary needs. The food quality was of a very high standard. The piping hot food was served on hot plates. The attention of the serving staff was of a high standard and it was obvious that they were well trained. We highly recommend this restaurant and booking a table may be advisable. Thank you to all visible staff and those behind the scenes for giving us a special Sunday lunch.

Having gone to a music & dinner event previously (excellent) I booked an overnight stay to celebrate my wife's birthday. Surprised that they hadn't acknowledged my wife's birthday, a card, chocs, flowers in the room etc. Preparing to go for dinner, found the shower to be ridiculously hot and no way to regulate it. Couldn't get an answer from reception on the phone so told the member of staff at reception when we went down for our meal ( had to get scrubbed using only the basin as I didn't want a bath). The person on reception was dressed like a chef??? Said they'd have a look at the shower. We went to dinner. Nice staff at dinner. No 0% wines available. I'd mentioned in my booking that my wife is drinking alcohol free drinks but they hadn't read that. Dinner was nice. Later , passing reception we asked the chef/receptionist if he'd fix the shower. No! But he said maintenance would be told. Next morning we used the bath instead. Had a good breakfast, then went up to pack and checkout. Got an unsympathetic reply from the receptionist ( not the chef) when we mentioned the shower. No offer to compensate in anyway. I left fuming. Resisted having a rant on Trip Advisor and was pleased to receive an email from Hartnoll with a review questionaire. I completed it honestly and nearly a week later have had no reply or acknowledgement. We genuinely want to support local business and we don't rant that often. However, if you experience poor service then you're not likely to go back. Finally, we must be in the minority since most reviews for Hartnoll Hotel seem good. We would go back but some genuine recognition of our dissatisfaction would be appreciated, just sorry would be a start.

We had lunch with 2 relatives on 27 July making up a party of 4. The lunch was very well presented but somewhat on the sparse side. However we really want to take issue with the bad manners of office manager Simon English. On arrival we were relieved of our jackets by a waitress (it had been raining) which was correct and very welcome. However when we left we were unpleasantly surprised to find our jackets had been hung on quite sharp hooks on what was a hat stand without using the loops on the jackets! One of the jackets was a Barbour which is quite heavy and to hang it on the material was I considered thoughtless. Who trains these people? On arrival at home we realised the bill was not correct. They had not charged us for 4 coffees. We then settled the bill on that. I followed up with an email to the Manager (as above) explaining our concern about the jackets. He didn’t have the decency to reply. You’d think in a four star hotel they’d have a closet room for jackets not a hat stand! Our visit was made even more galling by the fact we had left a reasonable tip for staff. If the Manager had the decency to reply to my email he could have avoided this negative review. Maybe they are so assured of their business they really don’t care.

Having never been to the Hartnell before I was looking forward to attending a recent dinner as a guest. I found the service was superb and the food generally very good. However, the vegetables left a lot to be desired.. Firstly we were expecting wilted greens. They had obviously been over-wilted as the substitute was barely cooked brocolli, white cauliflower and BLUE cauliflower, which looked disgusting and tasted awful. Our particular dish of vegetables was two-thirds full of this offputtting bue vegetable. What was the chef thinking? Everyone was talking about it. From what I gather it was not up to usual Hartnoll standards.

We were in a seperate room which was ideal for my Nana who struggles with her hearing, otherwise I would recommend booking the conservatory room, particularly on a sunny day. The afternoon tea was presented well, 4 types of sandwiches - all delicious, a large homemade scone each and 4 different miniature cake bites (the one with the orange in was amazing!). All served with plenty of tea (the waiter kept checking our teapot and would instantly bring out replenishments). The grounds are so pretty. For £14 it was very good value.

We arrived as a large group from work for our Christmas party, having not been here before myself I thought the hotel was charming. We had a very good meal from the set menu that was provided and after requesting options for free from we were surprised by the wide range of options !

This mid sized hotel and restaurant delivers the standard of excellence that so many others aspire to. The curtesy, quality and atmosphere are equal to that of some of the best country house hotels in England.

Went for a works leaving do and before I arrived colleagues had apparently thought the portions could be bigger, when I arrived and another afternoon tea was ordered the waiter had overheard and gave us a free extra one. To be fair the portions were the same as one would usually expect and may have been a case of eyes bigger than belly, but I thought giving the extra afternoon tea for free was really good service. Lovely setting, great scones, good sandwich and cake selection, friendly staff.

We were staying at the hotel for one night and for convenience ate at the restaurant. We were so pleased that we did. The food was excellent. There is something to appeal to anyone's tastes. Fresh ingredients masterfully prepared. The service was impeccable all due to the restaurant and bar manager. He was very hands on in a discreet manner and made sure that all guests were were well taken care of. Not one single complaint. It made the meal all that much better. We ate breakfast there too. While the food was good, I can't say that the service came up to par. A big difference from the dinner.

Zeer relaxed dineren in sfeervolle tuinkamer met zeer attente bediening. Zeer gevarieerde menukaart met innovatieve combinaties. Prima wijnkaart. Probeer bij de vis de knisperdroge aromatische Engelse Lyme Bay Shoreline witte wijn; een verrassende ontdekking.

A friend suggested we all went for lunch at the Hartnoll and boy was it a good suggestion. Greeted by the maitre'd we were shown to a delightful table in the dining conservatory area, there was only one other table occupied by diners. We had a wonderful menu choice, which as one would expect, changes regularly. There was the offer of a fixed price menu of 2 or 3 courses or a main menu. We all opted for the fixed price, having the Tempura battered fish as a main, the Sea bass and an oriental pork rib eye steak. Beautifully presented the meals were excellent. The obligatory sweets chosen were again so well presented and tasty. With drinks the whole meal for 3 was a shade over £60. We all thought this was excellent value and the quality exceptional. We may be this away again and would definately return. I suggest you give it a try it's well worth the short trip out of town.

I have to agree with at least one previous reviewer that the drinks are ridiculously overpriced. Avoid.

We were staying at the hotel and as the food was so good there was no point eating anywhere else. Good selection of food although menu did not change when we were there except some items on the specials and deserts.

Enjoyed a lunch with friends in the conservatory in lovely surroundings, but £7.30 for a glass of Pinot?! Come on! Didn't expect to pay central London prices in Devon. Food was good, and nicely presented. It was a busy lunchtime and difficult to talk as it was very noisy in the conservatory. Might some soundproofing be introduced? Service was quite good, although we did have to ask twice before we had our bill.

We booked a table for 20 for my father’s 96th birthday and arrived to find that we were in a separate room, next to the garden, beautifully laid out with flowers on the table. The meal was delicious and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful. My father had a wonderful time. We have been back several times since for the Sunday lunch and have never been disappointed. Highly recommended.

We booked two hours before lunch and just as well, some were turned away. When we arrived the only table left was reserved for us. Great location opposite entrance to NT Killerton.

Do try to visit the Hartnoll while the Exmoor Food Festival is on. Fantastic value......£10 for 2 courses £15 for 3. We had 3 courses and all 3 were delicious. The portions were a good size and we didn't need a dessert but couldn't resist trying the toffee apple soufflé. It was really delicious and would definitely have it again. The service as usual was efficient and friendly. The meal was such good value that we will return to try out the dishes we didn't have this week ( except for the soufflé that we'll have again!)

I am so impressed by our experience here. The reviews seemed to be mixed but the Hartnoll was recommended by a friend so we decided to take a gamble. What a win!

Visited here today and had lunch. We sat in the conservatory which is light and airy. Beautful pint of Devon Red Cider and a 'Pulled Moroccan Lamb' on Brioche. Very, very nice indeed and good value for money. Excellent service too, - attentive without being intrusive.

We've recently discovered The Hartnoll Hotel and, having had two very good lunches here during the year, booked for a large party for NY Day lunch. As before, the menu choices were broad and catered for everyone, at reasonable prices, and the service and staff were again professional, speedy, friendly and well overseen by the Restaurant Manager (and also tolerant of our slightly chaotic timings!). They handled it all with good grace and cheerful smiles. The hotel looks cosy and comfortable - lots of armchairs and cosy nooks. Would highly recommend to anyone for lunch (and imagine dinner & overnight would be good too). Well done to all the staff who are making it such a welcoming place to visit.

I visited as a wedding guest. The hotel was small and intimate, with lots of little places to hide in the garden. The decor was lovely, and staff were efficient. The bar prices were very reasonable for a hotel of this calibre, I would like to return as a restaurant guest.

My husband and I have frequented the Swan Neck cafe many times, as we walk along Tiverton canal regularly. The experience has always been fantastic - cakes, coffee, hot chocolate - top rate. However my experience today was somewhat disappointing. I paid £7.50 for the soup of the day and a roll. I was astonished to see when it arrived that it was a smallish coffee cup of soup, rather than a bowl, accompanied by a small white roll. £7.50! The soup was delicious but in my opinion it should have cost about half what was paid. I always try to support small independent businesses but I'm afraid today's experience has left me feeling rather wounded and that I have been taken advantage of. Definitely not value for money in my opinion. Sorry Swan Neck but you've got it wrong on this one.

We called in for something to eat but it cost us over sixteen pounds for two coffees and two bland cakes you could go to bridge house just up the road and for another three pounds you can have two large coffees with two large snacks ,etc, Welsh rarebit with masses of gammon .the decor does not suit the bakery though I suppose that's what you are paying for but l for one do not like being ripped off,why calling a bakery when you can't buy any bread or cakes as you have to order it days in advance and there isn't any thing on display in the window. They are trying to be an upmarket cafe in the wrong place.we won't bother going there again ,rather go up the road ., at least we won't be ripped off.

I visited this tea room whilst waiting for my bus to Umberleigh. After travelling from Preston, Lancashire I was happy to be able to relax with a coffee. The staff were really friendly and the place had a great vibe. City life can be a bit hectic so it was refreshing to visit this little tea room and we were even tempted with cake which was delicious!
