Can’t fault it. We took our three dogs and it was great to be at such a dog friendly hotel. The food was great, the room was a lovely size and had the personal doggy touch of three bonios waiting for our dogs! Beautiful grounds, with a river at the bottom of the property which our dogs loved walking along and playing in Great location for dog walking, with some lovely walks minutes away by car Staff were very friendly and helpful. Will be recommending to friends and will be returning!

We regularly visit the country man in North Tawton for our Sunday lunches . We thought for a change we would try your establishment as we had family visiting. We wasn't very impressed with our Sunday lunch it was cold and the gravy was the flavour and consistency of water .🤮🤮 So unfortunately we won't be visiting again and we will be keeping with the county man in North Tawton in the future. The one star I have given is for the supposedly carvery. As we were only visiting for the Sunday roast

Our six night stay had been organised by one of our party of 17/19 and we loved it. Slightly disorganised on the day of arroval re menu choices and paying for drinks at the bar but soon teething problems were ironed out and all done with a smile. Rooms were comfy with everything you needed. Cleaned alternate days which was unusal but worked OK. All staff were personable and professional and nothing was too much trouble. We love dogs so for us, we enjoyed the interaction with the many different breeds and wished we had been able to take our own dog to enjoy the bar snacks and treats on offer! The grounds are spectacular - peaceful (except a passing train now and then) with the river Taw running through. Benches interspersed amongst the colourful hydrangeas, perfect for tranquil sitting and just soaking up the atmosphere. Food was very acceptable and, as a large table of people, we appreciated the little hiccups along the way were soon settled.

I would never book this hotel again! Simple as that! Edit after the owners pitiful response. What you are purposely forgoting to mention is that I contacted you within an HOUR OR SO of the booking being made!!! My circumstances had changed quickly, and I had hoped that any decent minded person would be sympathetic given the very short time frame from the point of booking to the cancellation. Obviously I was weong and you kept my £240!!! Money well earned for you in an hour of doing nothing!!! So while you technically did nothing wrong, I am sure many will see that your actions are rather unapologetic and perhaps even unscrupulous! So, As I said originally, I will never book again, if you are this tight and unforgiving, it would lead me to assume this type of ethic is adopted across all the services you provide!

Had a recent stay as a birthday treat. Enjoyed an afternoon tea and a breakfast- Food was very good, all good quality and very tasty. For us the stay was made perfect by the hotel being very dog friendly-we have stayed in alot of 'dog friendly' places but there are usually alot of restrictions, but here they are truly dog friendly. And the grounds are great for a lovely walk with your pooch. Beautiful location. Lovely staff. Plenty of parking.

On first impression the location, carpark and walk to the front door is lovely….but then we entered and the whole vibe was odd. No one greeted us, no one acknowledged our existence there were other people just stood around the doorway all looking awkward too. We asked for a drink before our dinner reservation and the bar guy looked flustered and unaccustomed to such requests and at that point we should have just left….but we persevered and asked for some cokes and asked if we could sit at a table in the bar area (which looked lovely and was empty) well what happened next was just weird…we were given half a glass of draught coke and then topped up with a glass bottle of coke and told that no we couldn’t sit in the bar area and yep it was at that point we knew we had to go somewhere else for lunch.

Did not start of on a good note. Having booked direct with the hotel for sunday lunch, we arrived and they had no knowledge if booking. Their booking system is not working properly. Had to wait whilst they found a table. Tried to put three of us on a small table for two stuck in a corner but agreed to move us when complained. Service was not brilliant. Very much self service. No real apology for the mix up. Food was good & plentiful.

The service here was second to none. Absolutely superb front of house staff who worked very hard to ensure our 3 night stay was as enjoyable as possible. However, we were part of a group who had booked a year in advance, paying a none refundable booking fee to reserve our room, and despite giving the hotel our dietary requirements at the time of booking, and then reminding them of them when we received the options from which to pre-book our meals two and a half weeks ahead of our arrival, the chef was unable (or just refused to) provide any choices for our dietary requirements and the hotel refused to reduce the cost of our stay to reflect the fact that our three course dinner each evening was going to be a maximum of two courses instead. The quality of the food that was provided during our stay varied tremendously from an exquisitely presented dish reflective of those shown on their website to a (chicken?) stew slopped onto a plate and we wouldn't recommend staying here unless you aren't bothered about what you eat and are happy to eat the same thing more than once during your stay. Very disappointing when the service was so good and the location beautiful.

A most pleasant stay in a delightfully friendly hotel. The food was excellent and ranges from scallops through tasty chicken dishes, burgers and fish and chips to amazingly presented deserts. As for the cheese board - no comment! Ignore the cholesterol and its not really there is it?! The rooms were warm and large with quirky furniture that is far to big to fit in any modern house. The staff were delightful, everywhere. Special mention goes to Tom who is front of house for bar and restaurant and Maddy who is on reception. Nothing is too much trouble for these two. They make you want to return. The breakfasts and breakfast staff were delightful too and we had a relaxed time. We don't have dogs but it was clear that they are welcomed and seem to love it there. I guess if I got that much attention I'd feel the same!

This was the 1st time away with the pups & we chose the Fox & hounds because the reviews leaned towards a very tolerant policy of the 4 legged guest. We weren’t disappointed at all. It’s a relaxed haven set in magnificent countryside with truly lovely staff. From the moment I called to book & spoke with Stephan who was ultra accommodating to the very last moment we felt completely at ease with our little hounds. Breakfast was delicious with attentive but discreet staff present - fabulous buffet of an above average selection all beautifully prepared. We also had dinner in the restaurant & the food was outstanding. The 1st night I had the venison. A healthy portion cooked to perfection & totally melt in the mouth. We also had the fish special the following evening which was truly amazingly good. Mega compliments to the chef! A wonderful few days away & we will certainly return if we can!

My wife and I were fortunate enough to be able to spend 3 night in the Treetops Treehouse at the Fox and Hounds this Christmas .From the moment we arrived on Christmas Eve our host Tom and his team did all they could to make our stay special. Ben made sure our glasses were never empty. The Treehouse is an amazing place to stay with a roaring fire in the wood burner keeping the place lovely and warm.We ate our evening meals including Christmas lunch in the hotel and only used the kitchen in the Treehouse for breakfast and snacks in between. The food in the hotel was excellent and the Beef Wellington on Boxing Day was the best I’ve ever eaten.Sadly the weather didn’t allow many ventures out into the surrounding area but we did manage a couple of walks along the riverbank and were still able to enjoy the views from the balcony out over the fishing lake. The hotel is a very dog friendly place and we were very much in the minority not having one of our own. I can imagine any one with an aversion to our four legged friends might find this a concern.Overall we can’t rate the place highly enough and send our thanks to all for making our stay so magical.

We stayed for a weekend mid December and can’t rate highly enough. The room was fantastic, so spacious, comfy bed, ample facilities. My partner discovered he was slightly too tall for the shower he is 6 ft so when he got in the shower head was literally sat on his head but wasn’t enough of a problem- more funny and we had huge bath and individual sinks, this is the Eggesford Suite. It was such a big room that it took a bit of heating and they didn’t hesitate to bring an extra heater to warm us up- it was perfect then.Breakfast on both mornings was good- you can pre order the cold stuff but also not a major problem if you forget. I had omelette on first day (generous fillings and yummy) and the waffle (pictured) and that was awesome. Partner had the full brekky both mornings and enjoyed, sausages were tasty! But the shining star of this place is the food in the evenings for me.... Tom the chef was serving out front and really made our experience exceptional. Super knowledgable on the food (which yeh you expect from a chef but it was clear he loves what he does!!) locally sourced meat etc. Night 1 was the Chataeubriand (probably haven’t spelt that right sorry!) and night 2 the WestCountry Trencher (pictured)... just exceptional, the meat was cooked perfectly and just everything without exaggeration was really tasty. I think the pricing is fair for what you get- worth every penny! Cannot recommend enough!!!! We also explored some local areas- Tarr Steps, Westward Ho beach, Sam’s Cider and Darlington Crystal Ltd - all fab. Overall we had an amazing weekend

The overall stay was lovely, the people who work there mostly are great and welcoming. I would like to thank all of them for their hard work during such challenging times. Below are a few things I experienced that seemed a bit odd.Pro:Good location to explore DevonGood foodCons:- On arrival there wasn't even a quick this is what we are doing at the hotel to keep you safe and ensure to pre-order your breakfast-Staff do not wear face masks-No towels in the room, the receptionist picked some off the floor and gave them to me - super non-hygenic - No AC in the rooms, small window super stuffy and hard to get air in. They provided a small fan which helped-Staff lack basic knowledge of the area when asked whats good to do in the areas their response was 'Nothing'-When they asked what are my interstest, gave some maps of the surrounding walks and recommended a local town near by.-When asked for food recommendations, the answer was steak which was good. Desert recommendations are not as good, especially when asked about what they are like.- Even when pre-ordered, the service was super slow despite the room I was in only had 2 other tables with guests.Covid-19 precautions definitely need improving as well as staff training and knowledge

We stayed as a group of 4 from the day hotels were allowed to open during COVID-19 controls (Saturday and Sunday night with 4 rooms booked as a fishing break. Considering we were some of the first guests the staff did a great job whilst ensuring that social distancing, cleaning, sterilising and serving was all carried out with a smile and to a well defined protocol. A lot of thought had gone into making this happen, tables, chairs, bar etc were all cleaned each and every time they were used. A special mention to Tom, Megan and Chris who went out of their way to ensure that all guests were looked after in rather challenging conditions. I have forgotten the name of their colleague (Ben?) , please accept my apologies as he was also excellent. The food was super, all of it. I can recommend both the Chateaubriand trencher and Trencher No 2 (Westcountry?), 4 very hungry adults couldn't finish the most delicious of dishes. The wine list is pretty good, certainly no complaints as we kept opening the Pinot Noir (USA I think). The hotel is great for walkers, anglers and anyone who wants immediate access to beautiful countryside. Simply done, clean, comfortable and we thought good value. We will definitely return and not just for the fishing.

Good solid and reliable any time. Lovely setting. Possibly slightly lacking in character and feels like any number of similar places. But no complaints

We came here on a Groupon deal, it far surpassed what we expected. The staff are lovely, the hotel is very nice, our room was gorgeous and the grounds are lovely. Very dog friendly and the dog walking area is vast fields next to the river, there are dog towels, treats etc. There is a beautiful tree house accommodation in the grounds, expensive to stay in but interesting to look at. Can't wait to come back.

We have the best stay ever , the room was larger than we expected the bed was huge the bathroom lovely. The staff couldn’t have been more helpful and friendly, Barry greeted us when we arrived , we were four hours early and planned to go for a big walk before checking in and asked for some local walks , Barry gave us maps and instructions a and a big choice to take away but also said we could check in no problem as the room was ready for us. Our walk was wonderful , the views were stunning . Dinner at the hotel restaurant was off the scale amazing, seriously good food , I’m a vegetarian which can prove difficult for choice sometimes but NOT here, all locally sourced food and wow it was a amazing!! Breakfast was also well received , honestly we would come back , we felt comfortable and welcome, nothing was too much trouble. And although we didn’t bring our dog . Dogs were completely catered for too!! Thankyou all xx

We recently stayed for 2 nights. Everything from the roaring log fire as we walked in to the kind and helpful staff, the comfortable bedroom with en suite and the first rate breakfasts was amazing.

Very welcoming and dog friendly in the bar which looked like any other hotels dining room. Spacious, airy and warm bar dining area, plenty of room to relax in. Food was tasty and plentiful. Log fire added to the ambiance.

Stayed for 2 nights as part of a Travelzoo deal. Hotel is quiet and set back from main road. Lovely atmosphere and really friendly staff. Ate both nights in the restaurant. Food was fantastic. We were asked our order whilst we had a drink and waited about 20 minutes to be taken to our table. Food was freshly cooked. The shared trancher on the first night was particularly good.

We were given a voucher for afternoon tea as a gift. Whist staying in the area booked it here. Not disappointed !! We were made welcome by the staff and the tea was excellent, befitting a country hotel rather than a city centre restaurant. The were several fisherman, who were staying in the hotel with their families, in the bar chatting which created a nice atmosphere. Obviously a nice place for fishermen to stay.

From start to finish a very enjoyable couple of days. Staff are friendly and efficient, Breakfast was delicious lovely fresh fruit salad, homemade granola, (really tasty) and Devonshire fry up made with great quality ingredients. Evening meal delicious although disappointed by the very small fish portions, taste was spot on. I definitely recommend a stay here, we will be back.

I attended a wedding at The Fox and Hounds. The gardens are fantastic, although the weather was beautiful so brought out the best in them. The food was good, the staff were professional and well organised, and the whole site was clean and well maintained.

Travelling to North Devon, we booked a table for dinner en route. We stood at the bar whilst a barman fiddled in the till and then disappeared for five minutes without acknowledging us. Meanwhile several people were soon waiting. On his return we introduced ourselves. There was no welcome, no table available, and a vague suggestion that we would have to wait. When asked "how long?", he disappeared to the kitchen again. There seemed to be lots of people waiting for food and none in evidence. Feeling that our idea of a pleasant dinner at a country hotel was likely to be disappointed we departed for the cheery welcome and speedy service of a Pizza Express in Barnstaple.

The team were so accommodating the hotel is set in a beautiful setting. We enjoyed the grounds as there is lots to do including a lovely walk/trail for children and families. The breakfast and dinner here was also great. We enjoyed our stay.

We had a one night stopover here following a four day trip away. The staff were all lovely and polite. The room was comfortable and clean (although the shower chord was too short and I had to stand on the side of the bath to pull it - this was reported to them). We dined in the restaurant and the staff were great, attentive but not in your face and very helpful with queries. We had the West Country trencher for our main, this was a huge sharing platter of all meats from the west, credit to the chef, all cooked perfectly. I feel the prices are great for the food you are served. Music and ambience were just right. Breakfast was fabulous, and again staff were really great. We will return, it was a lovely stay.

We are pretty local to the Fox and Hounds and have often driven past it but never thought to venture in as its a big place which looks like its going to be expensive.

Could not fault the meal and washed down nicely with a Chardonnay. Breakfast good also. Lovely place to stay if you like fishing. Apparantley the tree house is very popular.

Not what was anticipated. First 24 hours no hot water in bathroom basin and no heating in our friends room. Items on menus not available, draft beer pumps not working. Owner preferred to respond to our complaints in writing rather than offer a one-on-one discussion. Whilst “not believing it in a compulsory culture “, he felt a round of drinks was sufficient compensation for the inconvenience the four of us suffered.

My husband and I have frequented the Swan Neck cafe many times, as we walk along Tiverton canal regularly. The experience has always been fantastic - cakes, coffee, hot chocolate - top rate. However my experience today was somewhat disappointing. I paid £7.50 for the soup of the day and a roll. I was astonished to see when it arrived that it was a smallish coffee cup of soup, rather than a bowl, accompanied by a small white roll. £7.50! The soup was delicious but in my opinion it should have cost about half what was paid. I always try to support small independent businesses but I'm afraid today's experience has left me feeling rather wounded and that I have been taken advantage of. Definitely not value for money in my opinion. Sorry Swan Neck but you've got it wrong on this one.

We called in for something to eat but it cost us over sixteen pounds for two coffees and two bland cakes you could go to bridge house just up the road and for another three pounds you can have two large coffees with two large snacks ,etc, Welsh rarebit with masses of gammon .the decor does not suit the bakery though I suppose that's what you are paying for but l for one do not like being ripped off,why calling a bakery when you can't buy any bread or cakes as you have to order it days in advance and there isn't any thing on display in the window. They are trying to be an upmarket cafe in the wrong place.we won't bother going there again ,rather go up the road ., at least we won't be ripped off.

I visited this tea room whilst waiting for my bus to Umberleigh. After travelling from Preston, Lancashire I was happy to be able to relax with a coffee. The staff were really friendly and the place had a great vibe. City life can be a bit hectic so it was refreshing to visit this little tea room and we were even tempted with cake which was delicious!
