As always, this pub provided a wonderful selection of meals for us today. They catered for the 26 of us in our group, supplying a range of excellent meals running between spicy chicken fajitas, venison casserole, crab cakes, curry's, fish and chips, smoky Joe's chicken, steak and mushroom pie and belly of pork. All were great and served very rapidly considering the number of us there. It is well worth eating here. Updated 23th October 2024, group ate here again today. 21 of us had a variety of meals, all were excellent, and they served quickly and efficiently. For photos just look.

Nice place, but lousy customer service. I will go back and this hopefully I will get served. I have been before, and it was really nice, but the last time I was there, the guy behind the bar just didn't want to know.

Phoned for Sunday lunch and they fitted us in with the grandkids and the food was really nice. We will definitely use this establishment again

We went for a dinner at the Devonshire Dumpling, driven past it many times but not stopped before. Glad we did this time though, the food was excellent, although starters had quite a lot of garlic dish options, but the mains you couldn't falter. Service was great and very cheery, it's a spacious area and the loos were very clean. Gluten free options weren't massive, but as said the food quality and range was very very good. Parking is out the front and there's a side garden that children could play safely in. Overall a great place for dinners and possibly to stay? I'll definitely be going back for another dinner, value was great and not over priced which is helpful too. Enjoy visiting and hope your meal is as good as ours was. 👍

Lovely country pub converted to restaurant. Gorgeous food, very reasonable prices with great service.

We stayed over while walking the Two Moors Way. The lovely owner was so helpful although incredibly busy running the bar and waiting in the restaurant. We had good quality food in generous quantities in the restaurant, and felt very much restored after a long day's walking. Breakfast is set out the day before to help yourself, so that you can leave early if necessary.

Fantastic as usual. One of the few local pubs where staff wear masks too, what's no to like!

We went twice during a week away. Dog friendly, big portions and lovely staff up for a chat. Will definitely be back next time we're around there.

Wife e mailed the pub on a couple of occasions, and both times they were replied to very promptly, We met friends there on Saturday lunchtime and was greeted by a very nice and cheerful lady who we found out later to be the owner. The food was wholesome and very tasty, and enjoyed the on tap lager.…it was fairly quiet with only about a dozen people there but the ambiance was good, with a lovely log fire. We all enjoyed our meal, and the sweets were to die for. Although we are not local and never been here before, we would certainly go back again…Thank you Devonshire Dumpling

We had a lovely lunch here, nice food, pleasant ambience, much nicer than the outside would indicate. Very convenient on a main road, but quiet and comfortable inside. Good service. Loved the venison stew.

What a lovely pub. Great staff who were very welcoming. A good choice of starters, mains and desserts. The food was well presented, everything was well seasoned and all hot. My only niggle was they only had an Italian lager on draft, which neither of us liked. There were bottle options. The pub was well decorated with a roaring fire. Conveniently located on the A377. I’ve passed this placed on many times and now have finally visited. Will definitely be stopping again.

Placemats were wet and dirty despite us arriving at opening time. Traditional pub food was nice (roast and burger) but the curry was clearly chip shop premix and the veg and rice both overcooked. A lot of food tasted like they were bought frozen. Very disappointing low quality food for gastro pub prices

Excellent food, fantastic service, will be going again

Highly recommend the hospitality of this pub. We were a large group of 8 adults, 5 children and dogs. We decided last minute (Sunday morning) that we fancied lunch before we headed home. The host was able to accomodate, many resturants that we called could'nt. We had two large tables, one for the adults and one for children. The children were given colouring and other activities and the dogs were allowed in too. We really appreciated the service received, very child friendly. The food was wholesome and reasonsbly priced too. Thanks again team, good customer service, goes a long way.

Turned up wet and cold after a walk across Dartmoor (we cheated and caught the train from Yeoford to miss the last few miles!). Welcome warm, rooms comfortable, dinner good. Recommended stop on the Two Moors Way.

This is a wonderful stop off if you are walking the Two Moors Way. Excellent food in the evening and a help yourself buffet breakfast in the morning so that you can set off walking early . Very comfortable room with all amenities. Highly recommended.

We love The Devonshire Dumpling. Every time we go there the food is amazing and we always get a warm welcome, even if it's been a while since our last visit. Thoroughly recommend a visit here.

Sunday lunch today. We all had roast lamb - very disappointing, the portions were small and fatty. The Yorkshires were overcooked, whilst the carrots were undercooked. Too few vegetables; a small plate of carrots, broccoli and red cabbage (very nice), with a fairly tasteless cauliflower cheese. Greasy gravy rounded it all off nicely! The pub had got very busy by the time we got the sweet menu, but even allowing for that we had to wait an overly long time to place our order. When the dishes came they were very pleasant, the best part of the meal. Service was attentive, with our drinks brought to our table by friendly staff. Perhaps the weekly menu is better, but I certainly can't recommend the Sunday roast.

We went there for Sunday lunch, Amazing. We also went for lunch during the week as we were on holiday nearby we enjoyed a lovely 3 bean chilli which was very flavorful

Sorry devonshire dumpling poped in on the 1st may the roast was ok BUT you need to get the roast pots crunchy because your roasties where leathery because they had been to long in the oven and you need to use fresh vegtables as the cauliflower cheese was very watery but far from the worst roast i have ever eaten .if you want to get it right try the sunday roast at the black venus at challacombe .5star .

We had a really tasty meal here. Happy to amend the menu to suit an awkward child, he left happy and full! I had pie, chips and a bowl of veg and hubby had belly pork. All cooked perfectly and sadly didn't have room for dessert which sounded fab.

Wow, just moved to Devon and stumbled across this place, Sunday lunches to die for, yet very modest prices! H-U-G-E portions, expertly cooked, loads of veggies, they even bought out cracking. Staff were very friendly, tasteful decor, highly recommended, we've already booked for boxing day

Fantastic food! Stopped here whilst in between meetings for a quick lunch and the food was exceptional and staff are super friendly. When passing I will be back again! Very accommodating. Wish I could stay for a leisurely lunch or dinner! Menu is varied and looked wonderful!

We, party of four, visited for the first time. We were not disappointed! Fantastic friendly welcome which continued all the time we were there. Brilliant choice of menu and the food could not be faulted. Freshly cooked, well presented, generous portions, bery reasonably priced, but above all delicious! A delightful Devon pub, which we will revisit on a regularly! Also very dog friendly!

Would give it 6 stars if I could! Great food, amazing place, can't wait to go again, such kind and friendly people too.

Visited for the first time for Sunday lunch. Very warm greeting on arrival. Offered a choice of tables which was nice touch. Good choice of meats or veggie options or a couple of specials. Food was excellent quality. Piping hot veg-We are moving to the area so definitely be our place to go. Thank you for a lovely lunch

We chose to eat here this evening having seen really good reviews and were so glad we did ! The menu and specials offered great choices . I chose chicken fajitas which were the best I've ever had. My husband chose aromatic duck which was beautifully cooked and presented. We were given a table by the roaring fire and service and ambience was truly homely. Cannot recommend too highly ! 🤩

Had a lovely lunch here today (30.10.21). The food was absolutely gorgeous, best meal out I've had in ages! Very reasonably priced too. The lady behind the bar was friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend :)

What an excellent restaurant, very welcoming staff, food was excellent especially the sea bass. Would recommend to anyone.

We booked in here for Sunday lunch while on holiday nearby. There were 7 of us and they couldn't have been more accommodating. It is a family run restaurant and open Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sundays. Most of us had the Sunday lunch which was excellent. One of my grandaughters is coeliac and needs gluten free food. I didn't think to advise them in advance but on the day they were brilliant and made a gluten free yorkshire pudding and gravy for her. The vegetables came seperately to the table and there was so much we asked for a doggy bag and took the surplus home to make bubble and squeak the next day. All in all a lovely restaurant to visit. I would highly recommend it.

We were on holiday struggling to find somewhere to eat. I found this place on here, it didn’t disappoint. Friendly staff, beautiful homemade food, nice surroundings would definitely recommend and 100% come back

Three of us had a three course meal. Good value and excellent food. Not a huge selection on the main course menu, but enough. Also a good range of Specials. We really enjoyed our meal. Lovely service as well.

We arrived tired at the end of a long day’s walking on the Two Moors Way, much later than planned but Laura couldn’t have been more welcoming and obliging. Our bedroom was comfortable and we enjoyed a good meal in the restaurant that evening. We’d asked for an early breakfast the next morning and everything was set out ready for us to help ourselves and get on with our journey. The atmosphere was friendly and it is minutes off the Two Moors Way. We’d certainly recommend it to others.

On holiday and looked for a pub for a meal out and found this place and so glad we did . Great home cooked food and wonderful owners so welcoming felt like it was our local on only our first visit . Will be recommending in the holiday cottage for future people to visit and is now on our list of places to go back to when in the area - thank you a lovely family evening and letting our son have a friend for the evening made it perfect for him too . Very family orientated including your dog

Live in the area but have never visited the Dumpling prior today. A very chatty and hospitable Landlady and good Covid regs. Food was good. We had meat pie and fish pie. Pie pastry was a tad overcooked and hard but meat and all filling was delicious. Will definitely be going again.

Driven past this place so many times and wondered what it was like. Yesterday we stopped for lunch and couldn’t fault it. Amazing service from booking table right through to serving us. Had Fisherman’s combo and Bbq Chicken , lovely pub food and very friendly and welcoming service. Covid precaution were excellent too .

This place never disappoints. As safe as can be made available. The food was excellent. Slow cooked belly pork - perfect. The staff are always so pleasant and accommodating. My wife changed the style of her order, and they completed it perfectly.

We travelled to the area to see our daughter's new home in Down St Mary and popped into the pub to eat lunch. What a find!!! The hostess was lovely and friendly. Everything was clean and there were clear guidelines to follow re Covid rules. The food was well priced and so tasty and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Thanks very much! We will be back when our daughter moves into her new home!!! For anyone thinking about visiting, it is a 2 minute walk from the train station (Tarka Line) on Morchard Road.

Booked via phone a 2 night stay at the devonshire dumpling. A warm welcome. Shown to our lovely 4 poster bedroom. En suite. Tea/coffee supplied. Very clean...comfortable and homely. Owners even went out especially to get my husband some kippers for his breakfast. Had drinks and family evening meal. The food is amazing. Delicious. Very warm comfortable evening in the bar. The bed was very comfy and warm. Totally enjoyed our stay here. Would stay again....and highly recommended.

Have had several meals here since the new owners have taken over. The menu is really good as is the specials board. Couldn't find anything we wouldn't want to eat! Absolutely delicious food. The pub is nicely decorated and there was a lovely fire blazing away on a cold evening. The staff are so warm and welcoming . If you are passing by on the A377 it's a must try!

Very welcoming pub. Food was delicious and portion sizes were great. There was a good choice food, including children's menu. The cost for 6 people, including 3 starters was under £65, which was very good value.

We just wanted to say thank you for such a lovely meal and for the lovely warm atmosphere and the dog-friendly attitude. The food was astonishingly good. The battered brie starter was most popular.All in the bill was under £20 each inc drinks. Thank you.

We were extremely well looked after, nothing was too much trouble. Food was good and excellent service. We were a party of 15 ranging in age from 9 months to 80 years old. A place was reserved outside for our friend who is disabled.

Lovely, warm welcome at this gem of a pub. We ate here a couple of nights ago and we cannot recommend it highly enough. Very friendly staff and absolutely lovely landlady who introduced us to her equally lovely children who came to play with our puppy. The fish pie is amazing - home cooked and full of fish, absolutely delicious. My partner had chicken tagliatelle which was equally fresh and homemade and tasty. I can only imagine everything else on the menu here is pretty good too!

Made arrangements to meet our son here for lunch. We met here a few months ago and because we enjoyed it so much we decided to return. This visit was also a success with all courses tasty and full of flavour. We all ordered the King prawn starter which were delicious.The staff gave good service in a pleasant manner. The restaurant was busy which is always a good sign.

Came here for one night. Lovely four poster bed in our room. Nice enough decor could do with updating but I know the new owners have only been there a few months so I assume they will in time. Everywhere very clean. Bathroom was nice enough with a powerful shower. We had a delicious dinner here. I was really impressed with the menu, lots of variety. I have to mention I had one of the best nights sleep I’ve ever had at a hotel ! The breakfast was really good too. I’ll be going back ASAP.

I travelled from Birmingham with my wife to visit my son in Devon and he recommended we had lunch at the Devon Dumpling, it turned out to be a good choice. The Landlady was very pleasant and hospitable. The menu had ample choices of all courses plus a specials board also with numerous meals available.

Although We were able to make alternative arrangements for our visit to Devon- (Actually stayed within Family)- As we had previously visited The Devonshire Dumpling and delighted with our stay-( Although 'under NEW management')- Still 1st port of call- Recommend

I have visited The Devonshire Dumpling as passing on are way to the holiday cottage where we are staying. The staff were so welcoming and really helpful. The menu choice was excellent something for everyone. I would highly recommend the lasagna. The deserts where lovely also. We can’t wait to visit again before going home. Excellent value for money..

Since being taken over this place is lovely, good food, service with a homely welcome and feel. These guys have really turned it round, nice atmosphere and a friendly bunch.

Our party of four recently visited this pub early one evening for dinner. It was very quiet and a table was easily found for us. We all enjoyed our meals. Dog friendly.

The new owners have introduced a warm friendly atmosphere, which adds to the pleasure of eating here. Portions are generous and well prepared, cannot fault the service.

We have used this pub several times before, and the food has always been good. This week, under the new ownership, it is even better! Pleasant staff, good menu, very good service and value for money. I am over 60 and enjoy pub food, but the homemade steak and kidney pie was the best I have ever had! My wife and her sister also praised the service and meals. Look forward to coming back.

The new owners are making the Dumpling back into a really welcoming local pub, there is a such a friendly atmosphere and a great team of staff.

Last visited about 8 months ago. Enjoyed it then and did so again with the new owners. It's a convenient stopover from Exeter to North Devon and again we had a light lunch. Brie, bacon and cranberry was delicious and the bread was really nice too! A pint of a guest ale was a welcome change from Otter and enjoyed that too. OK, the interior is not very pub-like for some i.e. it's not dark and full of clutter. But, it made a change to have a bright, airy and fresh interior with comfortable seating - and nothing wrong with the carpet either!. Service was friendly, efficient and welcoming!

My Mum and I were gutted to see Gordans fish pie no longer on the menu due to new owners. We have it every time we go! But we were looking forward to a nice lunch regardless. Unfortunately this wasn't actually the case. Service was very, very slow although they were very polite and friendly when they did come. My Mum ordered the "vegetarian roast" as she doesn't eat meat and it was literally just a veggie burger with gravy flung on it! We had to laugh as it looked ridiculous! We were also disappointed to see all the vegetables were frozen as we always had lovely fresh veg from the previous owners. The rest of us had roast/gravy meals which were okay. My dessert was absolutely terrible - very dry profiteroles filled with fake cream with no sauce - just a bit of white chocolate dribbled over the tops. Also thought the portion of the toffee apple pie was a bit mean for £5. I really hope this is just teething problems and it improves here as it was my Mum and Dad's favourite and they were both gutted today.

This pub was recommended to a family member so we thought we would book for dinner as its always nice to try somewhere different. Apparently it’s under new management. The team were welcoming and friendly. The menu was as expected - pub favourites and some specials. The food we had was great - tasty, filling and nicely presented. The biggest let down for us was that there was no atmosphere. The layout is very regimented. The decor and furnishings do not go together and that check carpet certainly makes a statement but not the right one. These things cost money so maybe they can be changed in the future. There were quite a few children around - not sure if they were staying with parents in the letting accommodation or if they were the owners. Also lose the tacky neon OPEN sign in the window.

So good to have a friendly village again pub with lovely new owners! Laura and Gary are a breathe of fresh air and have already made such a difference with their friendly welcome. Children and well behaved dogs are made to feel very welcome. Great bar staff too!

You don't miss something untill its gone, As a local resurant it used to deserve its high rating, not any more. RE ent visit to experience the new management service we placed a two coarse meal, the mains were delivered to table, no sign of our starter, my lasagne was that fluid I thought it was a soup, my partners chicken pie was that dry and only just warm it was uneadable. The option of boiled potatoes turned out as fried chips, and we over heard several guests being informed that the kitchen was out of steak!!!!!, at 7pm on a Saturday????,
