A lovely gem of a pub, full of lovely old bar memorabilia. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Lewis thanks for the advice on whisky for Christmas presents.

Friendly. Not busy at 3.30pm on a Thursday . . .! Only Fuller's London Pride on cask, but well kept.

Two friends and I booked a table on a Saturday night. We were welcomed and promptly offered and served drinks. So far, so good. Our table was near an open door to a kitchen area. There was a lot of jangling crockery noise and more disconcertingly, front of house staff openly eating. Another table became free and when I asked, we were moved without any problems. We were then ignored while the waiting staff chatted at the corner of the bar with their backs to us. I finally caught the eye of someone and our order was taken. A long time passed and the pub dining room emptied - still our food didn’t arrive. No one even glanced at our table - if they had, they’d have seen an empty glass, normally a clear signal to offer another drink. Once again, I had to stop a server to ask for a drinks order to be taken and enquired about our food. It was because there was a big function upstairs, she explained - not really our problem, and there was no sense that anyone was especially bothered about our experience. Our food finally arrived and it was very nice. However, I needed to attract attention to order myself another drink. We finished eating and our plates were left uncleared - obvious to everyone, given the location of our table. Finally, the manager cleared, offered us the dessert menu which we declined, and left us to chat. I had to get up and ask for the bill when we were ready to leave. I’ve worked in restaurants for many years and I was appalled at the level of hospitality. The basics were poor - being aware of what’s going on at a table whether it’s customer waiting to order, additional drinks required, food taking ages so reassure guests, glasses cleared when replacement drinks arrive, dirty plates cleared promptly. I understand that they may have had a busy shift but no one looked rushed off their feet, and every single member of staff was openly drinking - beer, wine, eating crisps - behind the bar, in front of the bar, backs to us. They didn’t seem to care less whether we were having a good evening or not. The bill came to £140.00 for 2 drinks each and a main course with some sides. Not cheap - 2 simple pasta dishes were nearly £20 each - but I would always factor in great service when looking at value for money as it can absolutely make an evening. On this occasion, I just felt disappointed again and again. The only redeeming factor was the charming manager who was lovely when he interacted with us. If only he had been able to inspire better standards and a sense of true hospitality in his team.

Came here the other day for a friend's birthday. Atmosphere was nice, not too crowded for central London. Good price for drinks. Someone needed to be removed from the venue which I flagged to staff and they acted on straight away. Thanks.
