So we haven’t been back to Cotes Wokingham for a couple of years as we were so disappointed with the fact that we were told they couldn’t make plain pancakes for a desert ,as they came pre-made with chocolate sauce. ( shocking ) the easiest thing to make in the kitchen .
So it literally left a bad taste considering it’s supposed to be a fairly high level restaurant chain.
So after couple of years we thought we would give it another try as the service and restaurant was always lovely.
So we went last night and it wasn’t full by any means , decor looks lovey and young assistant manager girl who greeted us was very pleasant.
Sadly that’s were it ended -
Ordered a bottle of wine which the waitress pored the first glass then that was it , I ended up topping up our glasses myself . Our table was the only table which didn’t have a lit candle the whole time ( I know that’s not the end of the world )
Then the shock again came when ordering our food , my wife does not like puréed / mashed potatoes and the two dishes she liked had puréed potatoes so we asked the waitress if the chef could do an alternative.
YOU GUESSED IT-
No sorry the kitchen cannot as is comes pre-done
So basically all the meals apart from Steak are microwave meals .
And they know how to charge too Disgusting!!!!
Then when the food came out starters were just ok my French onion soup could quite easily been Heinz tinned .
My Main course was Luke warm and pretty tasteless , my wife ended up with Salmon served with Chips ( very strange )
At no point did the waitress or any member of staff ask if our food was ok , if they had I would have advised that my food was like warm and very bland too
So disappointing so I got up from the table to find the assistant manager lady that greeted us to express my disappointment without making a big scene in the restaurant and also to advise that I’m not happy to pay service charge as it was appalling .
When the bill came granted she had taken my meal off the Bill but there was still service charge on our bill .
Unbelievable can’t believe how bad the service was , it’s a real shame as it really looks the part of a high class restaurant but sadly that’s where it ends
Definitely won’t return again such a shame .

Lovely service everyone was so lovely and very polite. It was so calm and they all seemed very happy. The food was so delicious I got my food in less than 5 mins. I would definitely recommend
Staff couldn't fault amazing food disappointing. Steak was un edible sent it back. Replacement fish chips greasy sent out with roast potatoes? Adult burgers not great fir £20. We pre ordered when we booked so expect better. Childs birger ordered plain as don't like any sauce came out with a burger sauce all over it. Lasagna over priced for portion size . Won't be returning shame because stuff were polite. Needs chef as my steK was ordered medium rare. Came out medium
We went to the Catherine Wheel after seeing the recommendation on the Bristol Barkers website. We arrived at around 13.15 and we were clearly unwelcome from the moment we arrived.
The pub was busy, so we tried to sit at the bar, but we're told we couldn't sit there because there wasn't enough space. Fine, so we moved around the corner to a free table that had no reservation notice on it.
Originally, we intended to have lunch, but when I went to get a menu and order our drinks, I was told that they would need the table back by 2.45 as it was booked from 3pm,and the kitchen was backed up, so there was a significant delay on food. Because of this, and the fact that it was Sunday lunchs or nothing, we decided not to eat. At this point, the bar staff became visibly irritated. He reiterated that they would need the table back for food at 2.45, but about 5-10 minutes later (around 13. 30) he came back and told us they needed the table back for people who wanted to eat and we had to leave. Even though they'd previously said they needed the table back at 2.45 and there was no-one actually waiting for our table.
We asked if there was another table we could move to and we're told no. My friend asked if we could have a refund for our drinks because of the inconvenience and was told no. So we went to leave.
My friend then asked to speak to the manager and was told there was no manager on site. What pub doesn't at least have a shift supervisor on a busy Sunday lunch time?
All of this despite the local man who clearly knew the barstaff, arrived after us, and was sat alone at the same size table, nursing a pint, who clearly was not going to be asked to vacate his table.
I have never been treated so disrespectfully by bar staff. They just kept trotting out the same week rehearsed lines, so clearly, they do this a lot.
OMG What tasty food!! Reasonable prices and friendly, efficient staff. Had a few problems finding a place to accommodate us on a Monday eve (maybe because it was between Christmas and New Year 🤷♀️?), but we are very happy that The Globe were happy to feed us their delicious food
The roast dinner was very disappointing, the so-called roast potato was deep fried, the chicken was dry, the carrots were rubbery and soggy - I suspect they had been cooked hours before being served. The broccoli was over cooked. My grand daughter ordered a bacon and brie panini - a chilli chicken baguette turned up!
Ye gods! Oh! I should add, we waited 28 minutes for this appalling meal.
Never again will we go there.

Not much changes, OK for fast food, & toilet breaks, nice tidy car park, HGV parking can get a bit 'cramped'....might all change from 27.5.25 when HGV's get banned from 'OLD' 7 crossing.
Absolutely awful experience at The Folly. The service was shockingly bad from the moment we walked in. We were left standing at the entrance for ages before anyone acknowledged us, and when someone finally did, they acted like we were inconveniencing them. It took forever to get our drinks, and even longer for the food—which was cold by the time it showed up. Staff seemed completely uninterested, more focused on chatting amongst themselves than helping customers. No apologies, no smiles, just attitude. Definitely won’t be coming back. Avoid if you actually want to enjoy your night out.
If you are looking for a charming village pub with excellent food and superb accommodation then do try The Anchor Inn at Oldbury on Severn. Our room was called “Dancers” and can be highly recommended. All in all a most enjoyable few days.
