Food good service appalling……it took 30 minutes for them to ask if we wanted a drink and almost 45 minutes to order the food. Many tables had finished before we ordered.

We booked the Anchor for a family meal for almost 20 of us. Having read the reviews we were very worried about whether the food would be nice but it didn't disappoint. My father in law said his roast lamb was the best he had ever had. Everything was well cooked. The puddings were delicious. The decor is old fashioned but perfectly enjoyable. Initial service took a while but the food came quickly and puddings, no mean feat for 18 of us. Perhaps they have off days, I don't know, but today our meal was lovely and we had a wonderful meal.

We are staying in Thornbury for a couple of days and decided to re-visit The Anchor Inn in nearby Oldbury on Severn. What a delightful country village pub it is, from the log fire burning huge logs to the smiling bar staff and range of draught beers. I chose the Fish Pie and my husband the Lambs Liver and Bacon, both of which were excellent. Thank you for a most enjoyable visit.

Until about five years ago, my husband and I lived in the area for some forty years and never had a bad meal at the Anchor. It was a must to visit on our trip down Memory Lane. What a disappointment! Beef curry was more like a watery beef stew with a spoonful of curry powder added at the last minute. We were glad of the generous pot of mango chutney to give it some flavour. We didn’t risk desserts. The young waitress seemed surprised at our answer when she asked us if everything was alright with our meal. She murmured “oh sorry” and that was it. Beer and wine were fine.

Very poor meals served. Buttered chicken curry, luke warm and completely lacking in flavour. This was just chicken with curry sauce poured over. Second meal was Described as ‘chicken in lemon and herb’ but again no flavour and cold. Very sad as this used to be one of our favourite places to eat.

Pre-booked a one night stay to attend a party nearby. Location is lovely, room was well decorated, very clean and well stocked fridge. HOWEVER, our room, named ‘Dobbins’, was located immediately above some refrigeration units which were noisy and vibrated the bed / walls, to the point where I couldn’t sleep. Although acknowledging that it is a working pub, we have stayed in many other such pubs, without same issue. Tried to discuss with manager on checkout this morning, but he was dismissive and appeared completely uninterested. For this reason, would NOT stay again or recommend.

We popped into the Anchor after a dog walk down to the sailing club, as we've had really good food there before and the weather was warm. We sat outside and ordered, prices were really reasonable and food came within 15 minutes. I can honestly say that my meal (lasagne) was one of the nicest meals I've ever eaten. I know it's hard to get lasagne wrong but I will never enjoy one anywhere else knowing this one exists. Then the garlic bread, again, best garlic bread EVER. I could eat this meal every day for the rest of my life. My boyfriend had a venison burger & chips and said it was amazing too, but I was too focused on my own food to remember what else he said. Seriously. Incredible. Also nice toilets, and lovely staff. Will be back as many times this summer as I physically can!

We visited here with friends in March 2023. It's some time since we visited (before Covid) and had good memories of the food served in the restaurant. This time we were seated in the bar area - nice enough, but not quality atmosphere like the restaurant. Our table was good enough but some looked very cramped for a meal. The food was OK - soup and tempura prawns to start and belly of pork and Pork Pire of the day as mains. Starters were good, but the pork belly was not the best. Nothing to complain about, but not as good as served elsewhere. Staff were friendly and welcoming but were hard put to cope with the level of business.

Stopped here for an evening meal while walking part of the Seven Way. It was warm so we ate in the quiet, well maintained garden. Service was prompt and the food choice was reasonable (with some more unusual dishes) and not too expensive. My char grilled steak was cooked as medium/rare as requested. More locally sourced beers would be nice.

Stayed here for one night on a B and B basis. This is a delightful olde world pub. The selection of beers and food was good. However I was disappointed that breakfast was a do it yourself in the bedroom. Was staying over with another couple and sitting alone in my bedroom having breakfast by myself would not be my choice again. The bedroom was very modern and clean albeit access was outside the pub and upstairs not suitable for anyone with disabilities.

After a walk nearby and, in fairness, because we used their spacious car park we went for drinks before leaving. We went straight to the beer garden as we had dogs with us and it was a lovely day (in the sun). One of my party told me that he was told to leave the pub not so long ago because he went in with his kids - they're ok with dogs though (go figure?).The garden was well maintained and has a boules court behind it. I've had warmer welcomes at the bar, but the service was quick, the beer was good and the price was fair. We only ate crisps, so no comment on the food.

A lovely pub with a great garden where you can enjoy an alfresco drink in the sunshine. The Stilton ploughman's lunch was good too.

Decided to pop in the Anchor after spending the morning shopping in Thornbury, although very busy we were not kept waiting and ordered our drinks and food within minutes, the staff were very helpful and the atmosphere and clientele was lovely. Both our meals were delicious and superbly cooked, a good choice of ales ( I would recommend the Trelawney ). Will definitely return sooner than later

I ordered a chicken and bacon ciabatta for lunch at a price of £7.50. This was advertised as coming with salad and coleslaw. The ciabatta itself was average - small for the money and not exactly generously filled. There was a tiny garnish of green salad on the side of the plate and probably all of two tablespoons' worth of coleslaw. Half way through eating the ciabatta I found out why...I took a bite of the coleslaw and it had really gone off. Unfortunately I swallowed a small amount before I could take evasive action. Not pleasant! On closer inspection I could see it was not the right colour - distinctly yellowed. I gave myself a minute, took a generous sip of Tribute, and finished the ciabatta. I don't usually give one-star reviews, in fact I think this may be my first, but being served rancid food - that'll do it.We pointed this out to the young man serving when he came to collect the plates. I knew from one look at him that he wouldn't apologise, and I wasn't disappointed. He said, "I'll let the kitchen know".At this point I had already decided not to eat in The Anchor again. He did reappear, without consultation, with a fresh coleslaw and green salad, but strangely enough, because I'd not long swallowed some rancid coleslaw I wasn't really in the mood for it any more, but another member of the party took advantage. The difference between what came out as a replacement, and what had been on my plate to begin with, all I can say is it reminded me of Fawlty Towers. The young lady who came to clear those plates did say sorry about that, but not with any conviction. There was no attempt to provide a discount, discounted dessert, etc.Had the rest of the food been worth coming back for, I might've tried a bit harder to get some satisfaction. But it wasn't, so I didn't, and I won't. Other meals ordered were ok but on the small side and not good value for money. As others have said, there are far better options in this part of the world and if you're not local I wouldn't eat here - drinks only (good guest ales on tap at least). The Salutation in Berkeley (great rolls) and the Tudor Arms up at Slimbridge (great baguettes) are just two better bets.

After 3 weeks of bringing up our newborn we decided to venture out for lunch to a reasonably local pub in the area we've been wanted to try for some time. It was our first proper outing with the little one so we packed the usual array of baby related paraphernalia (that pretty much filled up the boot of the car) then drove the 20 minute drive to The Anchor in Oldbury and got there about 2pm ish.We then unpacked the car (10 mins!) , and went into the bar. Now admittedly, we hadn't booked however as we went into the busy bar area we found a free table next to the bar. We negotiated round the tight tables to eventually sit down. We unpacked our stuff, took our jackets off and got the little on out for some milk. After about 5 minutes the rude girl serving at the bar said "you have to leave; no kids allowed in the bar!". Err ok... we were literally forced to leave with no compassion which was embarrassing and upsetting for both of us.We'll never be going back to this place. It didn't even look great inside. The Salutation Arms in Berkeley is not only nicer in side but also serves better food and has a really nice kids play area. Seriously; save yourself a journey - there's much better places in the area.

If you want to drink or eat and drink at any time of the year heroes the place to visitNear the river, a walk away, excellent facilities but mainly a fantastic menu and never disappointing The gardens are a delight in the summer and the bar and lounge highly recommended with warmth created by open fire and now recently added b and b accommodation which our friends regard as high qualitya real treat then and excellent value

I was out for a long cycle ride with my two boys aged 10 and 7.We needed a rest and a drink and stopped at The Anchor.Despite the pub being almost empty, we were banished to the beer garden to drink our drinks. In the summer I am sure this is lovely, but at 5pm on an Autumn evening it was and cold miserable and having spent sometime cycling we rapidly cooled down.My boys are well behaved, and particularly in an empty bar there was no need to kick us outside.

We had looked through the menu online, and decided what we might want. When we went to the dining room & saw the extra menu for that day we all changed our minds, and had a yummy pancake filled with all sorts of seafood, and generously topped with toasted cheese. We will be eating here again!

Had the festive menu, after a very long wait, thought because the food was preordered we wouldn't have to wait so long. Wish the sprouts were cooked longer, and potatoes with the sea bass weren't cooked. Was compensated for this though. Enjoyed the puds.

Visited here for dinner on 11/09 during a walking holiday. Nice decor and welcoming staff. I had a pint of Gem, and was able to use (their only) beer jug! Wine list was good and the pinot blush was approved by my partner. Starter portions were good, the pork bites were very nice as was the Bruschetta, then I had the burger and she had the Gnocchi. Both were good sized portions and very tasty! It was so friendly we popped back for a pint the following lunchtime and were recognised as soon as we walked in!

although the building looks run down and the shop out dated, the food is quite fresh tastes ok and is reasonably priced, however besides one blonde lady the staff are rude and quite short. they are supposed to close at 4 but normally are closed by about 3:50. the donut selection is random I never know what they will or wont have id go greggs if it was closer

Grubby, shabby in every way. Frozen vegetables, poor or little service. Plates at the carvery were dirty. Chaos service, all running around clueless
