What an absolute Gem of a place! We were staying for a week near by at Glen Finglas and had passed this place several times on our way out. It has quite a reputation for its excellent homemade cakes, coffee, and wholesome homemade food.Opening times(at this time of year) are restricted to Fri, Sat, Sun and Mon and so we only managed to visit once on the Fri before we left. It was very busy but it was a beautiful day and there was plenty of seating outside if required and several parking places also. We were warmly welcomed by the friendly owner who allocated us a table and the wait was explained to us. The wait was certainly worth it when our homemade soup with home baked ciabatta bread arrived with lovely coffee! Both were delicious. The cakes also looked yummy too but we didn't indulge! There were also healthy salads and vegan food available. While we were waiting I also made friends with the owner's delightful black and white gentle, friendly and affectionate border collie. Obviously this place is dog friendly. The cafe was spotlessly clean,( I'm very fussy ) warm welcoming and a little Quirky which we loved. The owner does a terrific job of making this small business work very well. It's a real Gem away from the busier cafe's in Callandar and we look forward to returning and sampling the cakes as well the next time we're staying in the area. we would both highly recommend a visit.

At the beginning of our Scotland trip we came for a 'simple visit' to Deanston Distillery. Since it was a fairly unknown distillery to us and we had just received a bottle of Deanston at home (in the Netherlands) we thought it would be nice to visit it. Unfortunately we didn't have time in our schedule for a tour at that moment. However, because of the familiar and enthusiastic welcome from Lauryn & George in the shop - with whom we stood talking for quite a while - we decided to book a Warehouse no. 4 tasting on the last day of the holiday - on the way to the airport. We had a private tasting from Aiste. She was very enthusiastic and knew a lot to tell and let us taste delicious whiskies straight from the barrel. The atmosphere in the warehouse is very friendly and the samples were ample. Worth the money in our opinion. Since George had given us a sample of a special 32yo whisky during our first visit - which we then talked about for another 1.5 weeks - we decided to take this bottle home with us, filled by George himself! On our first trip we had already bought a small bottle, filled by Lauryn. Now we have a bottle at home filled by Lauryn & George. So they kind of came back home with us. Next year we will definitely go back for the tour and to say hello!

Such a cosy, welcoming haven in the hills! Unexpectedly came for lunch after breaking down on the way up north, what a pleasant surprise! Delicious, fine dining at pub prices, gorgeous terrace to enjoy pints in the sun, and the most genuinely friendly staff. Felt immediately at home, and they even sorted us out with a discounted room last minute. Lovely place, definitely worth a visit!

Visited for lunch, food and staff were excellent but it was very disappointing to see the staff allow a couple to let their dog sit on a seat at the table with its head on the table, being fed their food and staff doing nothing about. For this reason we will not visit this place again.

We found this cafe by accident and I am so glad we did . The staff were so friendly and made us feel very welcome. The food was very good and reasonably priced, and the views from the enclosed terrace were amazing !!

Lovely location, but a very disappointing and expensive panini. Rubbery, tasteless cheese in equally tasteless white bread which was squashed so much it had the consistency of hardboard.

Visited here with my wife for a couple of pre dinner drinks. Barmaid was really friendly and so were the local drinkers . The toilets were immaculate . I’d visit again!

I would like to think because it was a Tuesday it was the chefs night off. It was certainly an off night. The starter of the mussels was good and tasty . Then I decided on another small plate and chose the southern fried pheasant with wild garlic and house salad. Then I decided pheasant was dry unseasoned lacking in spices and thoroughly unpleasant. As for the tasteless green gloop which owing to the colour I presume was wild garlic, what was it. It may have been an unseasoned watery bechamel. It had no taste of wild garlic in it. The salad was courgettes and rocket with a dressing which also was unseasoned. The pudding was caramelised pear with lemon cream. Once again a lump of over whipped cream thrown on the plate with no finesse, granola sprinkled over it with half a pear and caramel sauce. I did not get a hint of the lemon in the cream. The person cooking this food really has to learn to taste the food. I do not use much salt in my food normally but this had none. The service was not bad but we did have to find some spoons for the mussels, the cultlery for the main course and pudding cultlery was put beside my partner as if I was not there. So all in all we came away feeling it was a waste of £100. Disappointed and annoyed. The place was in a lovely setting. Although we made a reservation when we got there we were told the dining room would be full as a bus trip was due in. It obviously never arrived as we were then shown into the dining room. We have been there before on several occasions and had a lovely meal.

The most awful place I have ever came across. We went for the lunch menu that finished at 5pm. So it was 3 course meal for me and my husband. He went to order it and they said starters and mains come out together. He thought they must have been mistaken as how can you eat a bowl of soup while your main is on the table getting cold. When we asked if we could have the main taken back to be kept warm to my husband finished his soup the manager appeared saying that's not how it's done here you need to take your starter and main at same time. As I dont have the staff for this.We have never came across anything like this. It all seems to silly. But he was getting annoyed at me because I said the restaurant isn't busy at the moment so how can you not accommodate us. He kept saying because that's the way it's done here and that's it. And for the meal its self was awful. I couldn't eat mines it was so bad and when I received my ice cream the manager proceeded to come back to me to go over it all again everyone was staring at us it was so embarrassing. Then he has the cheek to say I will give you your money back. Thinking hes doing ne a favour. The most horrible manager I have came across. We left and went to the river house and had a lovely evening there. Definitely. Will not be returning to Highland Gate.

Second bad experience in the span of a few months. We live locally, and loved it here our first time as a couple. Went in, and the bar staff seemed irritable. We ordered our food, and were told a couple items weren’t available. I made two trips to our table to ask my other half if she wanted something different. I asked the bar staff to hold my spot. I returned and they were taking someone else’s order. When the order was in, people before us got their food. Two sets of families came, ordered, ate, and left. The waitress came to us, and said she just found our ticket, and that some food we ordered they no longer had. They offered to refund us, we accepted, still assuming we would get our meals. Then they still didn’t bring the food. Usually after a hour especially, they’d refund you anyways in any restaurant as it’s a ridiculous thing to have happen…. But it seemed like they cancelled our meals. When we asked they brought it out a half hour later, hanging out of take away boxes. We were just shocked. We wanted to relive the experience of our first date. I’d had paid again just to sit in and eat, as we really liked it there before. Quite unreal. In some ways it felt like we were discriminated against (though we weren’t, it just had the same effect on your feelings as being discriminated against. If you know you know). Anyhow, we will never return, unfortunately.

We kwamen bij toeval terecht bij de Tearoom op het treinplatform in Crianlarich. De ruimte is eenvoudig maar authentiek ingericht. Aardige eigenaresse, prima eten en drinken.

Thank you for a lovely meal last night, chicken stroganoff tasty and tender . Husband had babotie- tried some and had such delicate flavour, gorgeous. We were 30mins away but definitely worth the drive round , would recommend you try it . And should mention guy serving us, Mike I think, offered a warm & welcoming visit.
