The Chequers is an excellent pub and restaurant. The menu is varied and the portions are generous. The quality of the food is always very good. I always have problems deciding on what to order as I really like about 8 things on the menu. What a dilemma to have! The bars are in keeping with this historic coaching inn. Cosy and welcoming. The selection of ales is very much to my taste and I enjoy the choice. The friendliness and service of the staff is first class. The host, Dominic, is usually on hand to have a chat or checking if his customers are happy. This really is my favourite pub in the whole of the Maldon area.

I went with the family to a special event xmas liunch with a local choir who provided us with great entertainment singing carols. The bar took an age to serve, the set up of tanles etc meant people were constantly pusning thru between tanles, Starter had toast you could crack with a nut cracker let alone your teeth. Main course had 2 hard boiled sprouts slice of carrot and slice of parsnip. had to request the gravey. Turkey was rolled and outside was dry. Desert this was a poached half pear in red wine. It was tastless. it was accompanied by a small upturned jelly with again, no taste. I have had a number of lovely meals out so far this Autumn and this was terrible and far to costly. A meal experience to forget.

We've been going to the Brewers for several years now. It's the perfect place if you want an informal meal (eg lunch in the garden), and also the perfect place if you want something more formal (eg taking friends for a birthday dinner). In our view, it's getting better and better. The service is quietly assured, welcoming, unobtrusive. The menu changes regularly but is always elegant and interesting. The set-price meal (three courses for around £28) is seriously good value. And the food is just brilliant. This is a team that has really found its form over the years - unflashy but impressive cooking, supported by the excellent front-of-house team (special mentions to Emma & Jess), and an ambience that is relaxed but formal enough to make any occasion feel special. So, yes, we like it here .... which is why we head back so frequently.

Travelled from Norwich for a spot of lunch and a mooch around the greenery. Although they stock some beautiful plants and gifts, the cafe was disappointing. With only cake and coffee available, no lunch, made more stressful as we had a very hungry toddler. One lady serving behind the counter who appeared confused with what she was doing at times. No option for a children’s hot chocolate. Even though this could have easily been catered to. Other staff members about but not offering help. Large que too but this didn’t seem to bother the staff and create urgency. Be nice to see a simple lunch menu in future.

The atmosphere was wonderful the food was amazing everyone raved about Jennie’s roast potatoes said they were the best they had eaten. Thank you to everyone that made our afternoon a memorable one.

As English Heritage members we call in at Audley sometimes for a snack on the way past. After our last visit in August I wrote to English Heritage to complain about the café but have not had any response so I decided to leave this review. My concerns were several - young staff with no supervision and rushed off their feet ( not their fault ). Food uncovered on a counter extremely close to where people were queuing and walking past. This is a serious hygiene matter. ( E.H. need to take a look at National Trust cafes ). Tables dirty full of used crockery and leftover food. There was a trolley for customers to use but tucked in a corner. Take a picnic, there are beautiful grounds to sit in and tables near the house which I might add is magnificent.

Called in here to look at the antiques. We bought a small item and were served by the most miserable sour faced, unfriendly, man we had ever seen. On the way out we bought some of the excellent cakes on offer to take home and were served by a helpful friendly young lady and a jolly friendly young lad. Maybe they could teach the old bloke a few things about customer service ?
