I had concerns when we arrived for our pre boked table this past Sunday as it was utter utter chaos, two queues of 6 at the bar, staff flustered and not coping and even though we had a table booked we still had to put our name on a list to get served?! Anyhow, after the initial impression things improved dramatically and we were treated to good service and excellent food with some excellent choice of drinks all in a charming setting. I suppose because it is so good it gets busy and we may opt to choose a less popular time next visit.

Had two excellent meals here recently. An evening meal for 6 people - several different choices enjoyed by all. And yesterday, lunch for 2 outside in the nicely shaded patio courtyard. On both occasions Gluten Free options were available and they took great care to ensure that our requirements were met. Altogether a very pleasant country Inn with enjoyable walks down to the River Blackwater. ( Go through the Churchyard and return via Fish Street )

Myself and my partner went for lunch here on a Sunday, no booking needed. We had the most amazing meal of lemon and herb chicken, chips (hand made) and home made coleslaw. I must say, as a chef myself, the food was outstanding. Well done BOH team. The FOH team were so friendly, chatty and very helpful. We really enjoyed the atmosphere here and the quiet village of Goldhanger. Plently of parking available also. We finished the day off with a lovely walk along the sea wall, which was most welcome after such a filling lunch!! This will now be our go to pub to escape our busy life of being in the trade!!! Thank you all so much. We look forward to coming back very soon!!

Went for dinner at 7.30, never seen it so quiet and have always had to wait for a table. Not sure if it was because it was a Wednesday evening in lovely weather and people were elsewhere or others are giving it a break as well. Not been since covid started as we had a few issues on our last visit but decided at last minute to try again. Didn’t have that welcoming atmosphere like it use too, the menu board has gone and are now on paper menus that you ask for. Chips overcooked and burger bun burnt. Burger tasty but again slightly overcooked and at £14.50, do understand things have gone up but would have been happy with burger and chips from local takeaway at £8. Not once asked if everything was ok during our meal or when taking plates away, never had that here before. Anyway time to give it another break and try again maybe next year. Not sure if owners actually read these reviews cause there are a few about overcooked food so maybe they should and then can address the issues.

The roast lunch I ate on Sunday was probably one of the worst I have ever eaten. I expect roast chicken to come with stuffing, pigs in blankets and cranberry sauce.... it did not. The chicken itself was well cooked and generous although it had little flavour. The whole meal was let down by the vegeatables. The roast potatoes were small and leathery with dried out insides, they were either cooked from frozen or reheated. The portion of cauliflower cheese was only a desert spoon full at best. The other vegeatables were obviously from a freezer bag. Very, very disappointing and expensive at over £15! However my husband had scampi and chips which he said were good.

We were staying in the area recently and visited this hostelry twice. I’d remembered it from 20+ years ago after I’d had a Sunday lunch there, a welcoming atmosphere and intricate surroundings I actually discovered I liked suet pudding after all! The steak and kidney pudding was well cooked and tasty., my second main later in the week was the fish and chips which was advertised as large, and it did beat me. I guess my only complaint is I prefer thinner chips than the larger ones but that is a preference that not everyone would agree with. I’d like to try it again when in the area hopefully not as long in between this time.!

It has been a while since I visited The Chequers, a friend and I dropped in for lunch today (28th March). The staff recognised me and were super friendly. I ordered the special of roast beef, salad, coleslaw and boiled potatoes. My friend had the Ham, Egg, salad and chips. We both enjoyed. I've seen comments about chips being over cooked, I guess it is a personal taste, I really enjoyed the chips being lovely and crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Great choice of drinks and staff attentive and friendly. I definitely won't leave it as long to revisit for a good quality enjoyable meal. Made a convert of a friend too 😊.

Having eaten here many times in the past and the always being reliable pub food, I suggested it as a venue for my father in laws birthday meal. There were 8 of us, and granted it was midweek but we were told by Dominic when booking for 7.30 not to arrive until 7.45/8 as they were quite busy. So 4 of us arrived at 7.45 the remaining 4 at 7.55pm. The waitress came over and took the drinks order perfectly, bought those over and asked if we were ready to order, I said we weren’t quite could we perhaps order the starters first if you need to take the order. To which the reply was well the ‘kitchen closes in 15 minutes’ so I don’t think you will be able to have starters I’ll have to go and check. We were in fact allowed starters, and thank god we were! They were the best part of the meal. The mains arrived quite quickly after the starters but were overcooked and burnt, the burgers were so overcooked every bite was like attempting to swallow a small rock. Now normally I would have said something to the staff at the time so they had the opportunity to fix it, however they then closed the kitchen as soon as our mains were bought to the table so they wouldn’t have been able to. Then because the kitchen had been closed desert was not an option. Other than when we were seated the staff never asked if we wanted any drinks we ended up having to go up to the bar to order our own. We were never even asked how the meal was, until the very end when we paid the £222, to which i said it wasn’t how I remember it here the food was awful, everything was overcooked. The reply was ‘I will feed back to management’, we have since sent a complaint to management and not had an apology or explanation for what could have caused this that night. So I can only assume if it isn’t a one off that in fact you are to now expect over cooked food and poor service at this pub all the time. As stated there were 8 of us midweek, but if you can’t handle a midweek booking of that size just don’t accept it?!.

A pleasant meet up with friends at this pub for lunch the menus are ok but a message for the chef … the cod chips or any fried item is slightly over cooked - our batter on the fish was very dark and this needs sorting out - also some desserts should not be direct from fridge as they lack flavour .. a shame with the over frying as it means food is left and wasted .

Priceless. As you walk into the main bar you are immediately greeted by a chattering open fire. A great aesthetic welcome on a grey Winter’s day. Good range of draight ales including Tim Taylor, Woodforde’s and Directors as well as a guest Belgian Wheat beer. I liked the little glass sample jars in front of each jump showing the colour of the beer.Noticed that some reviews describe the pub’s decor as a bit tired but for me the appeal is that this is a proper English pub. I visited with my young child after travelling a fair distance to get to goldhanger. The drinks were fine but I urgently needed to use the internet (no signal in the village) and couldn't access the wifi. My child spilled their whole drink and the barmaid offered no towels or a refill (it was just squash) when I apologetically went to the bar for help. After fetching my own means to mop up I asked the barmaid about the wifi she said no one else has any issues and smirked when I said I really needed to get on and shrugged and walked away. No idea what the food was like but clearly they aren't up for a friendly bit of kindness. The other pub in the village provided an excellent friendly welcome and the wifi worked beautifully.

After a refreshing Sunday walk along the Essex coastline, it was late Sunday lunchtime, we were hungry and we were not feeling particularly fussy. The Chequers Inn was open and served food - so met our immediate needs. The pub decor is a little tired with a few authentic 1970s touches. Frustratingly, the menu is spread across several blackboards, placed around the main dining room - reading them all involves being overly familiar with any customers sitting in front of them, trying to enjoy their food in peace. How about trying a bigger blackboard placed higher up the wall? After ordering food and being allocated our printed order number, we sat at a table in the small outside courtyard. After 15 minutes or so a waitress wandered past each table calling out a different number to ours, with no takers. She disappeared inside, and my wife and I noted that it looked similar to our order (a pie and a burger) - clearly a coincidence, we thought. A few minutes later, the ritual was repeated (this time we tried to catch the waitress's attention without success). A few more minutes passed, she appeared again and consulted with a colleague - then announced a new order number. It was ours!!Inevitably the food had cooled somewhat during its guided tour of the premises (no apology or explanation was offered) but we were very hungry and accepted it.The portions were big but the quality was not great.Salad was out of a bag and just start to go brown on the edges and the coleslaw was acidic and watery (a budget supermarket own brand?).The chips were a little undercooked and tasted of stale fish - please change the oil in the fryer more often! The burger was big but unremarkable and the bun fell apart as I was trying to eat it. The pie was better (homemade?) but served with bland boiled potatoes and vegetables. This is 2019 - I expect better.

As we were staying locally in a B & B we were not looking for anything elaborate just plain pub grub. We eventually both went for the Fish and Chips and were not wrong in our choice, it was cooked to perfection, fish with a nice crisp coating of batter, not too thick, and the chips were also nice and crisp on the outside not soggy and soft in the centre. The portions were so large that neither me nor my partner could clear the plate and definitely not room for dessert. I really cant wait for my next trip in that direction.

My wife suggested the Chequers for lunch from looking into the Good Pub Guide, which made it a fair certainty for a satisfactory visit. The large number of diners already there indicated that the inn was geared to providing set lunches, but our modest requirement of sandwiches & a drink were just as readily met as the needs of those with larger appetites. Indeed, the baguettes used to make the sandwiches were delicious, the sausages filling the one equally so, while the roast beef of the other simply melted in the mouth. And this was provided with as much care & attention as bestowed on the set-unchers—a most satisfying and satisfactory meal for two oldies.

We took overseas visitors here for dinner as we knew that good food, hearty portions and good beer would be served. Everyone enjoyed their meals ( vegetable shepherds pie, steak and ale pie, and scampi and chips). Excellent and friendly service from the young waitress.

We decided to go fairly local yesterday and head to Goldhanger and i'm so pleased we did. As a family of unfussy adults, we knew there would be something we liked and how right I was. Myself and my son had the Roast Beef which was lovely, my husband had the Lamb & Mint suet pudding and my daughter had the Jerk steak. The meals came up really quickly and so did the desserts but in an unhurried way. We'll be going back for definite

This is a proper English pub - no battleship grey or other gastro pub conventions in sight. Coal fire, good range of ales, low-ceilinged nooks. It is comfortable and relaxed. They specialise in Gin and Tonics, offering an impressive range of Gins at very reasonable prices. There is an extensive menu of classic pub meals - solid pub grub, with portion size given priority. Some of the dishes are based on ingredients from local suppliers.

Casual and comfortable pub with open fires adding lovely warmth on damp cold winter days. The food menu is pretty extensive and delicious. The portion sizes are on the generous side. Bonus too - you can take your well behaved dog in with you when you want to have a bar meal which is especially good after a great bracing sea wall walk.

It's nice to have 'a local' that serves genuinely good food. Every meal I've tried has been fantastic, and every element of those dishes, be it chips, relishes, coleslaw have just been wonderful. Can't recommend it highly enough, my favourite place to eat.
