The Horizon Hotel’s Vista Bar and Restaurant review comes down to one word: extortionate. Paying nearly £6 a pint - for Tennent’s - in Ayr, Scotland? Two courses on a Sunday afternoon was £20.95, and kids meals were £8.50 for two courses. The menu choices are limited, with just a half dozen options to choose from - my husband ordered Steak and Ale Pie at £16.95 and they charged an extra £1 to swap the mashed potatoes for chips as he requested. So you’re basically paying £24 for a pie and a pint on a Sunday. There are no “name brand” sauces on the table, just generic ketchup packets that you have to tear open and of course, the mess goes everywhere. Yum. The general atmosphere was good, with some music in the background. Staff were attentive and friendly. The WiFi doesn’t work throughout the whole restaurant or in the annex where we were seated. All in all, we wouldn’t go back for another meal. It was too expensive and the taste of the food wasn’t anything to write home about.

I have enjoyed many lovely lunches with friends and family. I also feel comfortable popping in on my own for a freshly baked scone and coffee as the staff are so nice and welcoming.

Every time we go to Dumfries we call in for either a mid morning snack or for lunch and we've always found the 'Home Made' food to be first class along with the service that we receive. Well done to management and staff for looking after us.

From start to finish we had a wonderful weekend stay , Hotel is in good condition , rooms excellent airy and fresh smelling , bed was comfortable , and en-suite was large . The dining experience was great , fresh scallops , venison , salmon was magical , cooked to perfection ! No frozen food here !! Good selection of whisky a tad overpriced but ok . Location is lovely , gardens great and an abundance of birdlife dotting bout .

I've been twice now since the hotel refurbishment and enjoyed rump of lamb which was superb both times. The venue has gone from a little shabby to a lovely, warm and welcoming environment for dinner. The staff are young and enthusiastic. The only exception was the barman who looked seriously unimpressed when he passed our table and my partner politely asked him for more drinks, he gestured that he was serving someone, he actually scowled at us! To be fair he did return later to take our drinks order but we'd already been served by then. Another scowl from him thrown in our direction! Not very pleasant, more training needed I think. The importance of learning to smile at customers, seems basic in the restaurant business but not everyone got the memo! Still the food was superb, the venue lovely and the rest of the staff were great so would I go back? Absolutely! I've only knocked a star off due to the barman but maybe it was an off day for him. Highly recommend!

We stayed in Moulin for the week and went here a couple of times. Lovely to sit outside in the sun with a beer, good umbrellas in case it rains too! Food quite good, Cullen skink excellent, veggie haggis available and some vegan options. Good beer made at brewery over the road. Nice atmosphere inside- proper country pub.

Very friendly service, sadly however the "famous" big boy breakfast was rather small and disappointing and a little over priced for what was presented... it includes a cup of tea but if you want an alternative hot drink like a black coffee it's extra.!!. The whole thing was made up of cheap basic items and the beans came in a sad little plastic pot.. the toast was the only good thing about it. Unfortunately I don't see a repeat visit. Sorry...

This restaurant is part of Smiths hotel at Gretna Green. We were in the final days of our holiday in Scotland and wanted to have a special meal. We were staying at the hotel and saw this had good reviews. Well it didn’t disappoint. It was good that you could pick and mix from the a la carte menu and the bar menu. Every course was very good. Because we had courses from both menus I didn’t think it was too expensive. The service was good although it was very busy with other events going on. The staff were kept busy but were still attentive to our needs. Would recommend if you want something special or just for an evening meal.

Although initially very helpful re allergies, offering to accommodate my diet. We then discovered my ‘mashed potatoes’ were going to take much longer than other meals ordered. The service appeared haphazard, we were the only ones in the restaurant & we bent over backwards to accommodate them. The food was average & took quite some time to arrive. Won’t be going back. A generous 3/5

Would avoid this place at all costs, we booked for a family meal for my sisters birthday a table of 17, I have no idea why they take booking for large numbers when they can't accommodate it!! Not only where we sat at separate tables but the food was disgusting. Chicken curry was sent back as the chicken wasn't cooked properly, this wasn't the only meal that was sent back and not one apology was giving and the meals where still on the bill at the end when we never got them due to being under cooked. It was obvious the kitchen staff could not accommodate a group of this size and were just throwing the food out undercooked! The woman behind the bar (who I assume was manager) was too busy outside smoking constantly instead of serving drinks that we asked for. I feel for the young girl who was serving us and we did leave her a tip as none of what happened was her fault even the way she was spoken to by said manager was disappointing to see. Will certainly not be back here and would encourage anyone else not to. A member of the group has been violently sick since last night, would definitely blame that on the standard of the food

Utterly disappointed with my experience me and my gran paid £80 for a card and spirit reading and it was a guy who done it and nothing he said in the card reading was true for me or my gran in regards to ourselves or what's going on in our lifes and when we would tell him no he would change to a different story that still wasn't true it seemed like he was just taking a shot in the dark with generic stuff and hoping we would agree, the spiritual reading was even worse off as we were hoping our passed ones would come through but he only mentioned one man with name of either Bob,Robert,William or John (again just taking a shot in the dark and hoping that one would stick), and women with the initial e or c and started naming different names again but none of these male or female names are relative to us so overall it felt like we just paid £80 for a fraudulent reading disappointed is a understatement as we have been waiting to go visit a medium to see if my mum would come through who passed away a year and a bit ago and had heard good reviews about this place but instead we paid £80 for guy to talk absolute nonsense to us.

We decided to eat a light meal at the Muthu Newton Hotel as we had traveled all night to get here. The Chaplin theme of the restaurant is really pleasant. Also, the staff was delightful. Since neither of us were really hungry, we decided to go with the soup of the day which was a Sweet Potato & Coconut Bisque. It was served with a warm roll and butter. The portion was the perfect size, and it was delicious. We decided to splurge and have dessert. I had the brownie with cream, and my friend had the sticky toffee pudding. They were both good, but the sticky toffee pudding was over the top. Really excellent. Prices were very reasonable as well.
