the golden bite Kirkcaldy in Fife

After stumbling upon the Golden Bite Cafe while visiting Kirkcaldy, we both enjoyed a large fish supper with side of mushy peas. The fish was high quality, fresh with crispy batter and the chips were tasty. The portion size was generous- two fish fillets each with the large supper. Good value for what they charge. Living in Edinburgh this would cost around £15-18 for a single fish supper. From outside the place doesn’t look to impressive and the interior is very basic with plastic seats. Don’t let this put you off as the food is definitely worth it. Authentic Fish & Chips by the seaside with real ‘chippy sauce’ on the table. The staff were all very friendly and quick to serve and clean the table. Clearly a popular wee place amongst the locals. Only recommendation would be to have some background music playing in the dining area. This would help stop all the noise travelling through from the kitchen area. We will definitely be back for a return visit in the next year.

horrible.!! breakfast was very bad . quality of breakfast and the way they overcooked it . 2 mushrooms cooked to death and plate dirty . actually the whole place was dirty. kitchen looked very disorganised and dirty. the i think 4 girls in the kitchen are more socialising and hugging each other then get the place clean . very bad . wonder who owns a place like it . i had the toaster my wife the small breakfast. toastie was alright . but the tomatoes on salad been at least 10 days in the fridge. could not eat them . never again.

I came here with a disabled friend of mine, a lovely gentlemen who is capable of reading and writing himself. Now, the young waitress who served us wasn’t very inviting, here is a reenactment of how it went down Waitress “ whit ye efter” Myself “ full breakfast please with a milky tea” Waitress “ nae bor, whittts he wantin” *points rudely at my companion in his wheel chair with her Biro Pen* Myself “you mean *him* as in my gentleman friend in his wheelchair who has all his faculties about him, please ask him yourself Waitress “fine awright what ye efter then” Then spend the whole time walking past our table coughing like a heavy smoker, no mask, no hands covering face, tried to remove plates while I was still cutting into my fried egg. We both left terribly upset, I was tempted to give another shot but as I approached the door I had a severe panic attack and had to leave

Popped in for a plate of soup when passing and were glad we did. Good service, excellent soup and great value for money.

I have been to the Golden Bite a few times since my 2013 review, it has been under new management for the past year or more, again my comments are on the "regular breakfast"The cheap value is still good at £4.40 before 11 am .Cold bacon and sausages, a piece of tomato and 3 bits of mushroom........no black pudding or haggis, and I had to ask for a slice of toast.It was busy during my visit,so 3 stars are for value , but the quality has gone down which is sad, but I do hope this restaurant returns to being my favourite once again

Five years ago I said that I would go back to the Golden Bite, to try one of their fish teas. Today was the first of me doing so, and I was not disappointed. Because it was Friday, my pensioners fish tea cost £4.25. It was excellent value.

Best fish and chips I have had in a long time. Huge portions and nice crispy chips, not greasy at all. Will defiantly be back

Dropped in mid morning for double egg and chips with sausages . Great friendly atmosphere in the place .Order taken right away Cafe is half full at 10.30 with tables being cleaned and cleared as soon as folks left Service is fast and food cooked to order .Will be back soon

are you really hungry? do you need big breakfast ,here is ,for less than 7 poiunds you got giant plaits full of fresh food ,wow,so yummy

Dropped in for a bacon roll and cup of tea service with a smile one or two customers in having a full breakfast, looked really appetising .The menu looked quite good especially the fish teas with pensioners portions available

I came in here today with the intention of using the toilet and having a quick thing to eat, but I changed my mind as soon as I went in. No staff could be seen helping customers, they were all huddled in a corner chatting. The toilet is extremely nasty and doesn't flush. The light doesn't work either. Once I'd left the toilet a member of staff was cleaning the tables. All she did was dab the same cloth on the corner of each table. Unhygienic. I'm extremely unimpressed and will not return for food.

we have breakfast rolls here,we always enjoy them and theres lots of choices,the cups of teas are even good.fish teas available too

My friend and I meet regularly and after a bad experience at another restaurant decided to give this one a go. Food was good, nice big cooked breakfast for a reasonable price. Service was great and the server even accepted is being pernickety with what we did and didn't want with our breakfasts. Overall good experience

I visited the cafe intent on having the all day breakfast. Cafe was not busy only 6 customers including me. I chose a table next to the kitchen where the all female staff were congregated. I sat at the table fro 15 minutes. No notices or indication that the cafe was self service or waitress service. 3 different members of staff, in between their constant gossiping, passed my table coming into the cafe and going back to the kitchen. No acknowledgement that I was there, no advice on how to order, no customer service whatsoever. Their most important function was to talk and chatter with their colleagues. After 15 minutes I got up and walked out. I will never go back to this cafe and recommend that potential customers do likewise. Clearly the management and training of the staff is woefully inadequate and there is nil customer awareness and service.

Visited this place last week, only two other customers sitting, at first thought perhaps they were closing, as a waitress was at the far end hoovering, we sat down as the waitress continued to hoover, opposite us, another waitress walked past us several times straightening chairs etc. No one bothered to come to the table or even acknowledge we were there, after several minutes I asked "did we have to order ourselves" "yes" was the reply. I went to the counter ordered fish and chips. Was asked did we want milk in our tea, took 4 attempts for the waitress to understand 2 teas with milk, 1 with 2 sweetners. The fish & chips were generous size for a pensioners fish supper, however the chips were frozen chips deep fried, not the usual chip shop ones, lots of chips and a huge portion of marrowfat peas (too many), There was brown sauce and vinegar on the table, but no tomato sauce, when I went back to the counter to ask for tomato sauce, I was told it was 10 per sachet ? found this really odd, is there a shortage of tomato sauce in Kirkaldy. The friend I was with paid the bill, and gave a generous tip, which was definitely not deserved, as we did not receive a service the staff were totally disinterested, it was as if we were invisible. ,

Fuimos hoy 04 / 08 / 17 para un pez grande té, por mi esposa y yo y la comida estaba recién hecho, nieta con el mínimo tiempo de espera. Las porciones eran grandes, como se ha dicho, con todos los adornos y té y café. Lo disfrutamos y personal amable. Lo recomiendo encarecidamente a cualquiera. Bocado dorado Tienen un buen menú variado a excelentes precios y restaurante es espacioso, con un montón de mesas volveremos pronto.

El gran desayuno chico es la mejor cura la resaca de domingo he! Me amigos y novio ir cada domingo después de un sábado por la noche. Incluso mi abuela le encanta venir aquí de madrugada para tomar un té de pescado. Precio vale la pena, el lugar es limpio, nunca una queja que hacer. El personal es encantador y hablador!

Volver al café golden algo de nuestra visita semanal. Nuestro té de pescado ordenados y el gran desayuno boy. La comida se sirve a la perfección como de costumbre y el personal tan amable como siempre. Viajamos desde Dunfermline cada semana y no hay un café mejor alrededor. Los precios baratos y comida de calidad.

Basic old style cafe no frills.Good value pensioners fish and chips and large fish and chips which includes salad and two reasonable size fish.Very reasonable pricing for everything on the menu.No complaints.

This was the worst place I have ever eaten out, tasted disgusting, they recommended that the big boy breakfast is good, definitely not, no different in size between the kids meals and adults, staff look like they can't be bothered with customers either, if you don't want to waste money stay away. They don't even deserve a 1 tbh

Yo visitar la cafetería golden bocado en una ocasión semanal viaja desde Dunfermline y nunca me decepcionó. La comida para los estándares de cafe es increíble! ! El gran desayuno y té de pescado es nuestro pedido semanal y ha sido durante años. Andy y el personal es muy amable, siempre charlando. Recomiendo encarecidamente a cualquiera que fueran bajando Kirkcaldy a pop y probar el pescado. . Es el mejor alrededor..

Didn't disappoint was a big boy indeed small breakfast was also good size. Was clean and very busy which tells you a lot about the place. Only thing was had to buy sauces but would definitely return for breakfast

This place is a disgrace to the food industry, cooked food and raw food sitting out in the open plan kitchen area whilst staff are cleaning.And a chip shop that does frozen chips, the staff are lack lustre and uninterested the eating area is grimy and needs a serious investment of cash time and effort to address all the concerns.And to be taking bags of rubbish that are leaking water/fluids from them onto the carpet area whilst people are eating is worrying, but no one went back to clean ul afterwards.

If everything that was touched turned to gold then this café is a must. Many seating arrangements are on offer the moment you walk through the door so it is never a bother for reservations. Although orders have to be placed at the end of the café, food is a must with reasonable portion sizes at affordable prices. All meals are then brought to your seats. Had all fish & chip lunch. Delicious Andy is a good fryer . Always go for lunch when I'm Shopping in Kirkcaldy . Nice staff very clean

After struggling to find a good fish tea local to where we live we decided to give The Golden Bite a try after reading that they did the 'best fish tea' in Fife, quite a considerable statement, however we were very disappointed. We ordered the large fish tea as you never know what you're going to get as this differs from restaurant to restaurant. So our plates arrived with 2 considerable sized pieces of fish with salad, chips and tinned peas, one slice of bread with butter and a mug of tea. The fish was lovely and hot but the batter was very soggy and greasy and not completely cooked through, not crisp and crunchy, if you like it like this I would ask them to make it crispy. Everything else was ok, they do make a good cup of tea. Not sure if we would return or not as it's quite a distance to travel for us to be disappointed again.

Regular visitor to THE GOLDEN BITE, best fish and chips in Fife, freshly made as you wait, Fish Tea is amazing with Tea and Bread and Butter. BIG BOY BREAKFAST everything on the plate, fresh breakfast amazing Cafe with a wide menu for everyone, Andy and the girls will make you welcome

What can i say, Staff very friendly and service 100%, Only downfall paid 30p extra for coffee instead of (tea,which I would have got free with breakfast) also tomato sauce extra but brown free! Can't fault though well cooked, Presented well, Very clean.

I have stayed in Anstruther all my life but fancied a trip to Kirkcaldy who ever said Anstruther has the best fish tjey certainly haven't been to the golden bite. The staff are also very friendly will definitely go back xx

Visited the golden bit for the second time today. Was great! food cooked to perfection. I had the big boy breakfast today but previously I had the small fish tea and it was defiantly the best fish tea in Fife. For quality and price! Staff are wonderful and so polite and I will defiantly be making more appearances to the golden bite.

Had occasion to use this cafe on Thursday 21 January 2015, never again, the food was inedible, half cooked and thrown on the table without comment, we also had to endure a procession of hand barrows with supplies being wheeled through the premises with us having to take precautions to ensure we didn't have the delivery dumped on our laps, I am not in the habit of complaining but as far as these premises are concerned my advice would be, steer clear, unless you want to be ill.

The Golden Bite might be described as a no-nonsense cafeteria offering a range of well prepared Scottish food favourites and providing great value for money.Andy and his staff give all their customers a friendly welcome and ensure they enjoy their visit in comfortable and spotlessly clean surroundings on Kirkcaldy High Street.There will always be a demand for the types of meals the Golden Bite offers, from their huge all day breakfasts to their delicious fish and chips. I go here every week to meet my brother for breakfast and it is always great. We have tried others for breakfast and none have come close in both price and quality of food and service. The staff are friendly and serve food as requested.

went in today for lunch had the fish it was ok peas were like frozen out of freezer frozen the server just though the plates on the table never said anything my husband got the all day breakfast he asked for thing not to be on his plate when he asked the girl what they put on extra for the things he did not get she just looked at him and walked away we have been in lots of times and this is the first time we have had this experience never again

While visiting kirkcaldy with my brother we ate at the Golden bite we both had the fish tea. Excellent, unfortunately I live in Germany and visit once or twice a year I always make a point of visiting Kirkcaldy and the Golden bite food is consistently good.Someone please give them a well deserved award service also excellent.Linda

had a nice fish tea here on a cold wet day shopping in june . food was very good for the price , service was quick & friendly. would defo recommend .

Me and one of my friends travel from the other side of Fife to come here at least once a week. Without fail we get their infamous "Big boy breakfast" my favourite type of food is a cooked breakfast. Wherever I travel I always make sure I have one but this is by far the best I have ever had. Great service from everyone there who always greet you with a smile. If you haven't been I would highly recommend it. I will continue to come at least once a week until it is deemed physically impossible.

Lady cooked me a brilliant breakfast although it was nearly closing time when I visitedHave heard from others, that the Golden Bite do a "mean" fish tea also Maybe I will try this the next time .

we were at Kirkcaldy for the day shopping we went into the 50Fifty pub across the Road we wanted the soup & Sanwich but the soup was not what we would like curry .So we decided on a Bake Pot for my self & a Ham Roll for husband Then about ten mins later the girl came to us to say they ran out of ham i thought for a sat when places are busy they run out of ham so i said to the girl just cancel the rest .As husband did not want any thing else on there Menu .We only wanted a lite bite item .So i then went to the bar to pay for the 2 tins of coke we got .Then this other girl said will have a word with you in a min .So she said we dont have any ham as its our best seller so i said We dont want the pot either she went have somthing else in stead of the ham roll i said we dont want any thing else .She said you must try diffrent things i said we dont want any thing .I dont think she was happy .If they ran out of ham the staff should have been told this from the Kitchen staff .This was only the back of 1 as well .And there were only other two woman in having a drink and a couple were just paying there drinks as well .Would not go back .But the Golden bite saved us from HUNGER .My husband had the Big Boy i got the cheeses & Ham toastie i first wanted in the pub across the road .My husband went to the counter to put our food order in and with in 5 mins we had it on our TABLE thats what i call first class service .It was Value for money and was Great .Even Husband ate all the Big BOY THE breakfast you even got a cup of tea with his Breakfast .We will go back to THE Golden Bite Again

We went to golden bite as a family again. We always go there when we go to kirkcaldy. Our meal was lovely as always. Service was great and quick. Will be going back soon. Love there pizza crunches and curry sauce mmm

We have been to golden bite a few times for our lunch. We find there food lovely the service is great to. Only downfall would be getting in and out of the seats can be a bit of a pain.Other than that it is a lovely wee chippy. Defo can recommend the macaroni cheese,black pudding and pizza crunches well nice. x

First time went there with mama. Love tasty coleslaw and cheese baked potato I has! Good value, classic basic seat and table, cleanliness, quick service, friendly staff and never been disappointed. They have also great selection of vegetarian meal. I will recommend this great place to everybody. We will be back again.

I've been in a few eating establishments in Kirkcaldy, and this one wins hands down for being able to deliver a hot breakfast.......well cooked sausages, and friendly staff........I can only comment on their "Early Bird Breakfast" and " Big Boy Breakfast" both excellent value for money.......I am sure the rest of the menu is equally good. Give it a try, you will not be disappointed .

Hidden little gem on the high street across from the exchequer. A cafe that serves almost anything at anytime and the big boy breakfast is a must recommend. Attend at least once or twice a week

The Golden Bite describes itself as a traditional fish bar of the kind that was once common in all seaside towns, but we went for breakfast on a miserably wet December morning. "Cheap and cheerful" is sometimes used as an insult but it's exactly what this place is. The seating and decor are basic but clean, staff were friendly and service was quick. They do several variations on the "full Scottish breakfast", all of which offer exceptional value. I went in starving and came out full for less than £5, and the food itself was excellent. They also offer a range of hot and cold filled rolls and didn't bat an eyelid when my gluten intolerant companion asked for two filled rolls but without the rolls (we've had staff in more "up market" places refuse requests like this in the past). Golden Bite has its limitations but if you need a low cost and filling meal to help you on the next stage of the Fife Coastal Path this is the place to come.

Classic greasy spoon; perfect for that hungover epic breakfast. Huge portions, well cooked food and amazing value.
