A bit late for a review however myself and my family where here in Feb during a visit for the six nations. It was my highlight of the trip (maybe not the highlight Ireland did win). The steak was superb. Excellently cooked. I’m going back to Edinburgh next February and can’t wait to come back to this restaurant

We popped in on Sunday afternoon and were lucky to get in, as all the tables were reserved. So it's good to book a table in advance. This place is so beautifully decorated and staff are very polite and friendly, that I wish I could always visit here on Sundays. I had fish, I can't remember what it was, but it was delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant!

From the moment you enter Number One at The Balmoral, it’s clear you’ve stepped into one of Edinburgh’s premier fine dining establishments. The ambiance is an elegant blend of sophistication and comfort, setting the stage for an unforgettable evening. Food: The menu, crafted by Head Chef Mathew Sherry and his team, is a celebration of Scotland's finest seasonal produce. The Pittenweem lobster dumpling paired with coriander bisque was a standout, showcasing a balance of bold flavors and delicate textures. The pumpkin soufflé, with its subtle hints of gingerbread and praline, ended the meal on a high note, demonstrating both creativity and technical excellence. Service: Impeccable service is the hallmark of Number One. The staff were attentive without being intrusive, offering insightful recommendations and ensuring that every detail was perfect. Their professionalism added to the overall charm of the experience. Ambiance: The restaurant exudes understated luxury. Its intimate setting, combined with thoughtful touches like soft lighting and refined decor, makes it ideal for special occasions or a memorable night out. Value: At £99 for the 3-course dinner, the pricing reflects the exceptional quality of both the food and the experience. Sommelier wine pairings further enhance the dining journey, offering an expertly curated selection. Final Thoughts: Number One at The Balmoral lives up to its reputation as one of Edinburgh’s finest. With a flawless combination of culinary artistry, attentive service, and an elegant atmosphere, it’s a must-visit for food connoisseurs or anyone celebrating a special moment.

I won't lie, I went in because of the pub name (it has an interesting historical background) but the food was absolutely first class. Bangers and mash were on point and the servers were absolutely fantastic. The prices were good, too. 10/10 recomendation.

The selection of whisky is great and the food was alright but felt it was way overpriced for the quality we received. We were also charged £8 twice for one portion of the haggis bon bons (apparently this is some kind of a service charge, ridiculous we had to pay double for one small dish) Seems like a tourist trap to be honest and I don't think we will be back. There are so many better bars with more reasonable prices and better service.

We called in for diner tonight on spec and my wife and I agreed that we now have a favourite restaurant in Edinburgh. The service was first class and the food was exceptional. Very happy to recommend this establishment. You won't be disappointed.

We just arrived in Edinburgh by train, tired and hungry. After climbing a very long set of stone stairs, with a lot of luggage, we arrived at The Southern Cross Cafe. Excellent food at reasonable prices and extraordinarily friendly service made it well worth the climb. Don’t miss the Toffee Sticky Pudding!

We went to visit the city for the weekend with our two small dogs. This was a fantastic cafe who accepted us as a family (2 adults and 2 dogs) they were so obliging and helpful. We had lovely food and drinks in a charming cafe steeped in history which had a wonderful ambiance. The staff and owners were really hands on and it was busy on the three visits we made there. Each time we had simple food and drinks but the scrambled eggs were superb along with their scones and home made soup. It was quite tricky finding places that took dogs and also lived up to a high standard , but this cafe did so in abundance. It was warm clean and very inviting to the customer. We had afternoon teas and cakes, breakfast and lunch, Over the two days we spent in the Royal mile area, it certainly satisfied our needs with our two dogs. We arrived by train and the whole time we were there we had to put our dogs first. This cafe made a huge difference because of their warm and friendly attitude and we enjoyed the entire experience 3 times! Well done Deacon House Cafe and thank you for making us feel so welcome. We will alway remember your kindness… now we are back home in Liverpool after an extended train journey. Definitely going back next time we are in Edinburgh to your splendid cafe. We were having dinner with family and friends. The resturant was not crowed. SERVICE was spotty. The quality of food was poor The grouse was like "shoe leather" and way over cooked. The sea bass was cold and tough. We told them they needed to hire a new chef. When we complained we received a free desert as if this justified the 300 pound bill. Avoid this resturant. You are better off with pub food
