I wanted to book a lovely restaurant for a short trip up to Edinburgh and Blackfriars was the perfect fit. No fuss with only having to choose your main meat. The service was sublime from the moment we entered the door and the decor was simple, quirky, cosy and small enough to make the restaurant feel intimate. The food was incredible, taste explosions in every course. The chorizo black pudding stands out in the starter, totally melt in the mouth! You could feel the food had been handled with great care, which made me appreciate it even more. The wine was delicious, one of the best Pinot Noir's I've had in a long time. The portions were perfectly sized, no way you would leave there hungry! I recommend a cheese board, even if its just to share just for a little taste. Honestly a perfect evening, 3 hours flew by. Thank you.

Visited Blackfriars for lunch on 2 December. Restaurant was rather quiet, so atmosphere was somewhat lacking, however, excellent food with varying tastes and textures soon focussed our attention on the meal. The attentive and knowledgeable service was impressive. The lunch menu was quite limited but the quality was unquestionable. Another visit is definitely a must.

I was looking forward to the Blackfriars four course set menu (two main course choices, plus optional cheese) as an alternative to the usual agonies of choosing, entrusting myself in the hands of skilled practitioners who knew how they wished to handle their chosen ingredients. In the event, not only were dishes those I might have chosen myself from a more extensive menu, but each course logically and rationally complemented the next. The hope that the focus on a limited menu would allow for extra attention to detail, was completely fulfilled in terms of combination of flavours, quality of ingredients and presentation. This was also demonstrated in the knowledgeable contributions of front-of-house, who commented precisely on sourcing and treatment of ingredients and were particularly helpful in navigating the unusual and delicious wine list . They furthermore clearly enjoyed sharing their information in a helpful and understated manner that contributed hugely to the enjoyment of the meal. Relaxed atmosphere and knowledgeable front-of-house delivering on the dedicated efforts of a skilled kitchen has to be a winning combination ... thanks to all for a memorable evening!

Practical points: Like a number of other quality Edinburgh institutions, Blackfriers is tucked a few yards away down a side street off the beaten track of the Royal Mile. For a few pounds more one should bypass the tourist-oriented, money-grabbing 'gastro' pubs posing as a certain kind of representation of Edinburgh and instead indulge in a set menu treat that showcases the best of the Scottish larder. Some well-chosen matching wines and/or taking the optional cheese course - both essential in my book - will push up your bill somewhat, but the £35 set menu in the restaurant and the 'small plates' menu in Blackfriars Bar cooked by the same kitchen with the same attention to detail, have to rate among the better meal bargains in Edinburgh today, alongside some well chosen craft ales.

My son and I had dinner at Blackfriars tonight and it was a superb experience. The ambiance is quirky with unusual lighting and exposed brick walls--very simple yet evocative. There is a set menu for £35 which is excellent value. We started with delicious warm bread followed by a starter with blood sausage, trout and fried Brussels sprouts--excellent. This was followed by a seafood dish with cockles, mussels and a small turbot fillet, also delicious. We then had the lamb with a host of unusual vegetables that had different textures, tastes and colours--a well thought-out dish. The dessert of walnut apple cake with cinnamon ice cream was a treat. I highly recommend this place for a well-served meal with a warm, friendly atmosphere and delicious interesting food.

Plain tables and chairs and white walls complete the elegant ambiance. They offered a set menu for £35, which was good value for the 4 courses they served. Blood sausage, goats cheese, cockles, mussels, turbot, lamb with an array of beautiful vegetables followed by an apple and walnut cake topped with cinnamon ice cream. A real treat. Service was quick and pleasant. All in all, a real treat. I would definitely try this restaurant again.

Had a great meal at Blackfriars. The set menu was right up my street as I'm not a fussy eater but often prone to food envy when my dining companions make a better choice than me! The little tasters were delicate and flavoursome and the John Dory was so tender. You do get a choice of meat course, but we decided to share the partridge and mutton, so I got to try both - both were devine. We couldn't resist the optional cheese course, and then a lovely dessert. The portion sizes were just right. The staff were attentive, but not at all in your face - in fact by the time we left, we realised we'd been there for over 4 hours!

I give this restaurant 5 stars due to the delicious, refreshing food. The portions were generous but not overwhelming. The staff was very friendly-- our waitress took the time to give us recommendations for the rest of our stay in Edinburgh. My husband would probably give 3.5 stars-- he had a hard time choosing something from the menu as it was somewhat limited. I had the pumpkin soup (yum!) and the mussels with chips. He had the chicken with potatoes and greens which was on special. The mackerel looked delicious, but unfortunately they were sold out by the time we ordered. The drink menu was extensive.

Interesting, though limited, to 4 or 5 starters and main courses forgery lunch menu for meat and fish eaters but limited for vegetarians and all a bit too healthy and veggie - I had a starter which was lightly cooked broccoli with dressing and nuts which was pretty tasteless. The only main course option was heritage carrots with harrisa spice and a sort of couscous- It was tasty but too many carrots and lacking variety. The fish eaters enjoyed full mackerel and potatoes, and mussels and chips and another table had a very large special with crab and ham. The Afogato with ice-cream and liquour was the best part of the meal for me but others went away happier. A decent wine list that won't break the bank and good atmosphere and service - I woful normally have scored this higher but the Vegetarian choice made it average.

The waiting staffs attention to detail on the menu was great and the food was fresh and delicious. Be aware that the evening meal is a set menu. There is no choice of starter, fish course or dessert and only a choice of meat for main. But if you like good food then you can safely trust in the chef here to cook you an absolute treat. Quite simply one of the best meals I've had in a long time, and the price for a four course meal seems very reasonable. I don't understand why it is marked a ££££ on here... £35 amounts to £5 for starter, £10 for fish, £15 for main and £5 for dessert. On top of that you get fresh bread... I wouldn't expect to pay less.

We'd been to Blackfrairs once before, but hadn't been since they changed over to a set menu. There were four courses at £35, and a choice of mutton or wood pigeon for the main. There were no choices for the other courses. All of the courses were full of flavour and perfectly cooked for our liking. We also shared one cheese dish, for which there was a £5 supplement. This was a worthwhile addition and, for us, a shared plate was ample to try the cheese and chunky chutney. Although not full, the restaurant was busy and there was a good atmosphere. The waiting staff were ideal, not hovering but providing good service and a cheerful manner. I liked the decor, with bare brick, tea lights in jam jars and pale wood tables. On our previous visit, I'd noticed a bit of an unpleasant smell in the ladies. Thankfully this seems to have been sorted. I'll definitely be back, I'll just want to ensure the menu moves on enough so that the set courses aren't too repetitive.

We booked Blackfriars in advance of attending the Fringe. Our reservation was checked with us early on the day - which was great as we knew we were booked and wouldn`t find ourselves queuing elsewhere. The staff were exceptional (all female), explaining the menu and ingredients to us. Friendly and attentive without being over bearing. Happy in their work. The fixed menu was £35/person and worth every penny - exquisite ingredients, cooked and presented as you could only wish. The portion sizes were perfect for a four course evening meal. The interior is casual delivering nothing but the best in food and hospitality. Our bill was about £100 for food and drinks as we expected as we had checked the prices in advance. If you haven't tried it - do so, it won`t disappoint.

Also alles in allem ein sehr schöner Abend!

We ate here recently while visiting Edinburgh. While we enjoyed the overall experience and most of our meal, the entrees, unfortunately, were not very good. The evening we visited they were serving lamb and wood pigeon. The lamb was very fatty and the pigeon was so tough that I expected shotgun pellets to fall out of the meat. The remainder of the meal was great and the service was excellent. The cost of the fixed price meal, a pre-dinner cocktail and a bottle of wine totaled $187 in US dollars, not a cheap evening. I would return but not for lamb or pigeon. I wish they would add at least one more entree to choose from. Something fishy or vegetarian.

Our booking was confirmed early on the day, which gave us confidence we had a table during the busy festival - no queuing!

Everything was perfect for us - the food was perfect fresh and tasty. £35 fixed menu - the only decision was - what to have for our main - lamb or wood pigeon? The Home made treacle bread was gorgeous ... but so was every element of the food.

The bistro was small and casual with great ambiance. The staff (all female) were well informed and friendly without being in your face.

Outstanding food. Quite a small menu, but it was still easy for us to decide. Started with the appetizer special of butter poached langoustines with Isle of Wignt tomatoes. Wonderful with a surprise ingredient of fennel fronds which was a superb accompaniment to the langoustines. For mains chose the lamb with peas,,fava beans and grilled cabbage. So flavourful and the vegetables were perfectly cooked. Indulged in the churros with a cinnamon spiced chocolate dip for dessert. The latte was great too. The homemade bread offerings were excellent as well. Nice wine list and the server was quite knowledgeable. The wines are available in 250 or 500 ml. carafes so easy to do wine matching with different courses. Very plain but pleasant interior. The sound tends to reverberate when the restaurant is crowded, but the noise level while loud was manageable and as we came at 8:00 the noise died down later in the evening.About $240 Canadian for 2 people with 3 courses and a bottle of wine. Reservations advised. Note, the street is a bit tricky to find as it is on a lower level street off a main thoroughfare.

This restaurant has recently changed to a set menu only and the decision seems to be a wise one. We had a delicious four course meal (with choice of two main courses) plus the optional cheese course. (That was the poorest part of the meal - limited choice of cheese, no Scottish cheeses and the three that were offered were a bit sweaty). But everything else about our meal was very good. The starter of cured sea trout, chargrilled corn and heritage tomatoes was very tasty and prettily presented. The John Dory fish course was very well cooked and we liked the pigeon main course and the lamb one too. The strawberry and meringue dessert was a fitting end to a very enjoyable meal. The staff were very friendly and attentive. We will go back.If you don't want the set menu, you can eat informally in their pub next door. But service there has to fit in with the restaurant diners so we would recommend giving the restaurant a try. Don't worry about 4 courses being too much to eat. They are small tasty portions and the whole menu is well balanced.

We breathlessly arrived at Blackfriars, meeting friends to embark on a 2 week trip through Scotland. Anticipating delicious food, we were not disappointed. a prix-fixe menu, with two choices for the main was presented to us. Each course was unique and tasty, especially the lamb and fish entrees. We shared some fabulous wines, and we're the last patrons to leave that night, happy with our decision to eat at Blackfriars. Highly recommended.

We both opted for mains of mussels cooked in white wine and garlic and fries. The food was good but I could not taste the garlic in the sauce. The last time we came the main courses were excellent. For dessert I had churros which were amazing.

This place is really worth a visit! The service is very very nice and helpful, and the food was top notch for its reasonable price range. The presentation was delicate, and I think the chutney we got along the cheese was one to remember. We even got the recipe!

Beautifully presented tasting menu, appetising starters and fish course and succulent meats - I had the mutton. Great sweets too, though the cheese option was rather meagre. Good wine list, not outrageously priced. Expensive, but worth it

This could easily turn out to be our favourite Edinburgh restaurant. Every one of the 5 small and beautifully put together courses in a set menu was utterly delicious. Service was informative, friendly and enthusiatic. Thoroughly recommend (or maybe we should keep this gem to ourselves!)

Accidentally walking into its neighbour bar, I am politely informed that the restaurant is next door. But the bar looks so inviting... and it has a wee lit beer garden in the back. Next time!Cheerfully greeted next door, we are lead to our table and decided on our food. A simple menu (5 appetizers, 5 mains and 5 desserts). Our appetizers are apparently "running late" (a mere 20 mins or so...) so they offer us a complimentary half carafe of wine - very generous and unexpected. All the food is so fresh tasting, and the plating is done so well that it looks so non-fussed and inviting to eat. Everything was delicious - great selection of wine and beers (interesting flavours). I have already recommended this one to many people! Thank you, Blackfriars!

This is a real gem of a place, the set menu was great value and serious quality. We ate at The Kitchin the night before, and this place was a vastly superior meal, especially when you consider the price. It's the little things that stand out, like a tender crayfish tail, the most beautifully delicate home cured trout, and luxurious freshly baked bread and butter. Outstanding. Great service, too.

MORE AT OpenTable

we booked table for 730pm Sat in advance for this good ranking restaurant. however, we arrives early around 645pm. Though the restaurant is open, but the waitress insisted that we can only sit in their bar next door but not the restaurant or we shall wait till 730pm seating. we don't wanna drink so we just wandering around and back again 730pm. When we seated we found there's another stringent rule saying that each person has to order at least 1 main course. (this is the only restaurant we saw such stringent rule during our 2 wks trip in UK with lots of fancy restaurant visiting). We originally plan just have 2 main plus some starter to share given the usual large portion of UK dish. Then we end up ordering 4 main + 1 salad. What's even worse is that there's no many selection of main and the waitress saying since they only have 1 chef that night it's better for us to order same dish to avoid long waiting. last, several dish on the menu are out of stock (it's just 730am and we are just part of 1st batch clients). the flavor of dish is good but the fish of my friend is too salty. It's also a bit overpriced. the decoration is quite unique. service is inconsistent, one waitress is very friendly and helpful but the other is just opposite.

This little restaurant is something special and it starts with the wonderful staff. Fun, friendly and extremely knowledgable they really set the tone. Although little help was needed with the menu it was great for a couple of Antipodeans to have such in depth advice on unfamiliar wines and the excellent local craft beer. The current set course menu of delicious seasonal treats was a delight from start to finish. And don't be fooled by the somewhat pared back descriptions. The grilled corn appetiser came with a delicious brown butter and was simply a taste sensation. All meat and fish were perfectly cooked and the elderflower ice cream with meringue shards and gooseberry curd was the perfect end to a summer meal. We just wish this was our local ,,,,,

We visited this establishment based on Tripadvisor reviews and were greatly disappointed. Admittedly, we limited ourselves to the bar and its food, but shouldn't it be of equal quality? We had a steak roll, grilled corn, potatoes and chorizo and a pork pie. Of these, the corn was the freshest and tastiest. The park pie was rock hard. The steak roll was all roll. And so on. Don't bother.

Went as part of a work-event at Christmas. The hall was stunning, big fireplaces and stunning chandeliers. The food was very very good and a fair portion. Service was prompt and polite and extra considerate for our colleague who can't have peanuts, reassuring him that they checked his meal each time. Food was served at a lovely temperature. I'd love to visit this place as a typical patron. Also, it's a treat to be so far up the Royal Mile as late as we were. Even though it was Christmas time, the street was fairly quiet and Edinburgh old-town looks lovely (ignoring the road works!)

A bit late for a review however myself and my family where here in Feb during a visit for the six nations. It was my highlight of the trip (maybe not the highlight Ireland did win). The steak was superb. Excellently cooked. I’m going back to Edinburgh next February and can’t wait to come back to this restaurant
