Searching fora place a bit different from what you might find in a historical centre, I randomly entered here - and was more than pleasantly surprised. By the staff, the choices offered, the quality of the food, everything. Highly recommended if you want to spend a very enjoyable evening with excellent food.

We had an excellent meal here. They recommend small plates and sharing, so highlights were the Oyster, Haggis and crab crumpet. Really good ginger mocktail as well. It's a small restaurant with exceptional service. This is clearly a well managed restaurant and full of staff who are passionate about it. Well done.

The end of Angels with Bagpipes for us. We have previously visited the restaurant and had a lovely romantic meal with great food and service. How things have changed. The new concept did not work for us. It's basically over priced tapas for sharing at ridiculous prices. The concept was explained that you should order 2 to 3 dishes each for sharing. The food was to be honest sadly lacking. It was salty, small and I mean small portions and brought out as explained when it's ready. Sorry but the idea of having your broccoli with your fish gougons doesn't work when the next set of dishes was the Steak and fries with a peppercorn sauce. We were to be honest still hungry after the meal and needed to venture elsewhere to be fulfilled. Sorry but I had informed loads of friends when they visit Edinburgh to book a table. Sorry that won't be happening anymore. It's such a shame that our favourite restaurant in Edinburgh doesn't exist anymore.

Angel's with Bagpipes is a lovely little restaurant on the royal mile. Our table overlooked the courtyard of Old Town Chambers. Food and service here were both excellent, we ate here on our wedding anniversary and decided to come back for our 10 year anniversary as well. If you get a chance, have a meal here. I'd recommend the Haggis Bon Bons.

A gorgeous restaurant with bite size food and his drinks menu! We were looking for some food to eat in the area and got a table in the bar area for some drinks and food. Small quaint restaurant with what I considered a limited menu in terms range however it offered small places, medium plates and large plates with tapas-style shareable options. Prices were in the mid-high range so unlikely for those with a tight budget. It's right on the royal mile and opposite St Giles cathedral. There's outside and inside seating.

We called in for a quick lunch -- we were attracted by the name but on checking reviews thought we would give it a try --- some of the places in the area seem a bit hit or miss. Our waiter was excellent -- she was friendly, made recommendations and the wine by the glass had some interesting (and good choices). We liked each of our dishes. We agree with some of the reviews that the portion size is not large, depending on what is chosen, but it was fine for what we were looking for and, in our view anyway, showed a chef getting his /her cooking spot on.

Passing through the tourist streets of Edinburgh, we were convinced that we would come across one of these restaurants that were expensive and not necessarily good because they were in a busy city. We advise.

The main food and service were excellent. The staff were very pleasant, friendly and welcoming, and gave great advice on the food choices, and good suggestions. The restaurant is clearly very popular and does require a booking. On arrival we were informed that we had 90 minutes as the table was booked afterwards. The food was exceptional and would definetly recommend the haggis, crab and steak. The score is not perfect as we asked to look at deserts with about 20 minutes to go till we had to vacate, and at this point we were moved to the main bar area to order. This was not as good as very busy, much louder and seating not as good with other people almost sitting on top of us. Whilst I can understand the restrictions on our table and booking it would have being much better to take our order and let us have the full 90 minutes. If we had not finished by then, then of course move us. Likewise the deserts was the poorest part of the menu. The food generally was excleent. However the deserts gave little choice, and quality was actually very poor. The desert was dry, relatively tasteless and for the prices a Mcdonalds Flurry would have being nicer and better value. That was the only downspot, and will particularly mention the staff who were all excellent. Very helpful, friendly, and always had a smile on their face. Overall would certainly recommend this restaurant

30 minutes of waiting to get a single plate. I had the chicken. The dish was too salty. Too expensive for what it is. 22 pounds for three slices of chicken and a carrot, all with an ordinary sauce. Be careful there is a service charge of around 2 pounds which is indicated nowhere on the card, or maybe I didn't read it correctly but it's supposed to be readable so the customer doesn't feel ripped off . The toilets are located in the basement, right next to a kitchen. Small and dirty, for a restaurant that apparently wants to be chic, it's shocking. In short, move on.

The area in which we were sitting was extremely warm, uncomfortably so and the only ventilation means was the opening of patio doors which didn’t suit diners sitting next to them who immediately closed them again. The food was good (without being exceptional) and reasonably priced. My only issue was regarding the wine I drank. I opted for a glass of Rioja at £9.50 until the waitress pointed out that it was White. I then opted for the Red without checking the price, which turned out to be £23. My fault, but I thought the waitress might have pointed that out (unless she did and I didn’t hear her).

Three of my party had steak which was pretty mediocre and very fatty. One of the tables had the gravlax starter which was a tiny piece of fish. Not worth the money at all. The place has gone several notches and does not have the same ambience or quality about it. The downstairs down room was not open and looked like a general store room. I think the chef found the smallest bird, cut a piece of it’s breast and then presented it as a main course. I couldn’t cut my sirloin steak (cooked medium) with the steak knife provided. It was a tough chew, too. When we asked for toothpicks, we were given olive skewers. The place uses paper napkins. You get the picture.
