We just arrived in Edinburgh by train, tired and hungry. After climbing a very long set of stone stairs, with a lot of luggage, we arrived at The Southern Cross Cafe. Excellent food at reasonable prices and extraordinarily friendly service made it well worth the climb. Don’t miss the Toffee Sticky Pudding!

During my stay in Edinburgh, had breakfast here both mornings (only 3min from my hotel). Had first time around simple breakfast (coffee, OJ, and a Brownie). Second morning had Eggs Florentine (honestly best I have ever had - nice an runny, fresh products, and very tasty), had 2 huge Croissants and OJ + coffee (nice roast - felt refreshing). Service staff are very friendly and cordial, ideal interactions to start off what I think to be is one of the friendliest cities I have been too (given I have been to almost all European capitals, many America and Asian cities - says a lot). I want to commend my waiter this morning (4th year Marketing student from Perth). Were to still be in the hospitality industry would not hesitate to hire him for any job (clear communication, attentive to details and most importantly smiles). I will definitely be back!

Opted to go in here for lunch, and being a Saturday afternoon , it was as expected , pretty busy. Probably waited about 15 minutes for our order to be taken, and half an hour before our food arrived, by which time our drinks were drained, so asked for water to accompany the meal - which was duly brought over. The chicken & cheddar quesadilla with side salad ( £ 7.45 ) was hot, tasty, well-packed & filling. My son had a cheese & bacon toasted ciabatta with fries ( £ 8.95 ) and wolfed it down. Wasn’t too enamoured with the “special” Nutella iced coffee though, which had gloopy lumps in it. Service was chirpy and cheerful despite being run off their feet. Was going to leave a tip , when my son pointed out it had already been added on to the bill - so be aware of that.

Food and coffee was good. Service poor. The waitress was busy but spilt my soup over the table as she set it down. She didn’t apologise but spent a while mopping it up. Quite an amount! She did nt offer to replace the soup. After I’d finished, she saw there was more spillage under the plate, but again no apology, more mopping. There was a service charge added to the bill automatically and I did nt want to spoil our day out by saying I’m not paying. I felt forced to, and would not have tipped if not on the bill. The menu doesn’t warn you that 10% will be added.

Not value for money. A cup of tea £2.95 for a round teabag floating in a mug. Scottish breakfast consisted of deep fried pork sausage oven roasted bacon and overcooked egg. The haggis, tattie scone and mushrooms were nice. Beans are just beans. When asked how my breakfast was I replied ‘alright’. No attempt to ascertain why. There are better places to eat.

Spotted this place whilst walking yesterday and earmarked it as somewhere to come back to for lunch one day. So glad we did. Staff were so genuinely friendly and enthusiastic. Food choices were great and they went out of their way to make a more simple cheese toastie for the children. The soup and ciabatta lunch was delicious and couldnt resist a cake afterwards too- I had a toffee apple crumble tart which was incredible.

We called in for a coffee while on a sight seeing trip. Very friendly welcome on a busy Friday afternoon. Delicious coffee and the cakes looked amazing but we just didn’t have room at the time. Once we came to pay our bill we discovered we could buy cake to takeaway so two pieces of carrot cake were purchased, placed in a box with care, and napkins and forks provided too. It was absolutely delicious even after being carried down the royal mile and back to our hotel! Thank you.

Dotting about Edinburgh we were mildly annoyed that the "Instagram" cafes were all busy and despite being hungry, we didn't want to park up at a Starbucks or McDonalds. So it was whilst wandering around we chanced upon Southern Cross Cafe. Whilst busy, it wasn't packed to the rafters. On entering, a cheery member of staff greeted up, and, thankfully, they had a table free, so they sat us down almost immediately. We were furnished with menus, and after a while, someone came over to take our order. We decided to share a Big Belter Breakfast after confirming with the lady that this would be more than enough for two people. Our coffees arrived, very nice they were too. The place seemed to be a haven for tourists given the different languages we overheard whilst sat there. Completely awesome. The food arrived and the lady wasn't wrong, this thing was HUGE. There was bacon, sausages, black pudding, haggis, mushrooms, beans, toast, almost enough to fuel us for the entire day out wandering. Looking around the place, it was full of happy patrons who were tucking in to some fantastic looking breakfasts. I spied a stack of pancakes that looked amazing - on any future return to Edinburgh I am definitely having that! This place is great, hearty breakfasts, great staff, wallet friendly prices.

We waited a long time to get a seat but then were served quickly - coffee was quite small but tasted god and had lovely art. The only downsides were it was a bit noisy and we were hurried out pretty quickly by staff, bu it was busy so I guess that’s fair. Wasn’t the most relaxing place for a coffee, though.

We’ve visited the southern cross cafe 3 times now since living in Edinburgh and so I thought it was about time I wrote a review. Having previously purchased cakes to take away, today we thought we would sit in and have a bite to eat. We have NEVER been disappointed here. The staff are incredibly friendly offering their advice on the nicest things to order off the menu, the cafe is beautiful and most importantly the food is delicious. I really couldn’t fault it! We found this place by accident after strolling around 3 weeks ago when we first moved here and everytime we’ve walked past we can’t help but get something to eat. Seriously. The best Cappuccino in Edinburgh. The food is rather tasty too. Scotland in lockdown and it's pouring with rain and we're desperately looking for someplace to have lunch. Nestled half way down the road on a little side street off The Royal Mile we spot The Southern Cross Cafe, one of the only cafes open for business at this time. It was busy, like packed busy (but in a safe way of course, the distancing measures were adhered too at all times), yet the service was excellent and although we sat right at the doorway so I didn't have a clear view of the upstairs or back of the establishment I only ever saw three people waiting tables and they were outstanding, not once were we kept waiting. The food was lovely, a little pricey but generous portions. The ambience of the place was first class and this was largely due to the friendliness of the three staff. Did I mention the Cappuccino.Seriously though for me it was the fact that three staff were doing the job of ten and actually performed better than twenty.I was only in Edinburgh for two days but on my next visit I'll definitely make this a priority. Of course the castle is good but the Southern Cross Cafe is where it's all happening.

After a busy morning exploring Edinburgh, we both worked up the energy to have a delicious lunch and spotted Southern Cross which looked very appealing due to the amazing selection of cakes. The main disappointed was that we were served by an unenthusiastic member of staff who looked like she would rather be anywhere but at work. It did put a bit of a dampener on the trip as it felt painful to ask for drinks/sauces/bill. However, the main courses did not disappoint! I had the chicken, guacamole and cheese baguette while my partner had a cheese and chicken quesadilla. We both very much enjoyed the food which was hot and fresh from the kitchen. The service was quick also. We did however then decide to try the brownies which were rather disappointing. They were very dry and not an enjoyable brownie texture. So I wouldn’t encourage anyone to try them unless you like dry brownies! However, the rest of the cakes did look amazing and I wish we had time to try more.Overall, I would go back again due to the swift service and good value for money.

Literally a slice of bread with a thin layer of salmon and cream cheese, topped high with salad to make it look like a massive meal but really lacking substance. Everyone else enjoyed their meals though.

This was one of our favorite places for lunch in Edinburgh. We a short wait, but were given a sample bite of cake while we waited. The lunch was delicious; soup and a panini. Dessert was a slice of cake and coffee....The staff was attentive and friendly. Great find.

What a cute little breakfast spot. We ordered a full Scottish breakfast and a veggie breakfast the veggie haggis is tasty and the eggs were cooked perfectly. The staff are really attentive and friendly. We had two coffees and an orange juice which was freshly squeezed and so delicious. We would definitely go again.

Arrivate ad Edinburgo abbiamo pranzato nel primo posticino carino che abbiamo trovato e che non fosse una catena. Abbiamo fatto un'ottima scelta. Il locale è sulla salita che dalla stazione porta alla città vecchia

Had a full Scottish Breakfast here which was absolutely lovely. The cafe is very cozy and nicely decorated - our seat was upstairs overlooking the rest of the cafe which was great for people watching! The staff were very friendly, but our waiter seemed a bit distracted and forgot about us a few times - we had to keep asking him to take our order/get the bill. I even thought at one point we had to order at the till downstairs, however the tables around us were being served.

Visited here twice with friends for breakfast, our first visit we had eggs benedict, 2 breakfasts that were taken from the options list and a ham and cheese croissant with 2 cappuccinos, a regular coffee and a luxury hot chocolate. After now seeing the photos the luxury hot chocolate was rubbish as it was just hot chocolate in a latte glass no cream and no marshmallows so very disgruntled for the price, also the eggs were not runny and not gven the option for white or brown bread on the toast order. Our 2nd visit we had porridge and fruit and a bap and granola and yoghurt and a plain croissant and a ham and cheese one, followed by cappuccino, 2 green teas and a regular coffee. The fruit was about 90p extra and we only got a strawaberry a couple of blueberries and a raspberry so not worth the extra cash really. The plain croissant was hard and cold and the ham and cheese croissant was the same which was a shame as the day before it had been warm and the cheese was melted and it was tasty. The cafe is always busy and they do have a greatselection of cakes that look amazing and the staff are very friendly it was just a shame that for the prices they charge they need to be spot on with cooking and givig options and not forgetting things like cream on the chocolate. Would return but only for cake not for breakfast.

I won't lie, I went in because of the pub name (it has an interesting historical background) but the food was absolutely first class. Bangers and mash were on point and the servers were absolutely fantastic. The prices were good, too. 10/10 recomendation.

The selection of whisky is great and the food was alright but felt it was way overpriced for the quality we received. We were also charged £8 twice for one portion of the haggis bon bons (apparently this is some kind of a service charge, ridiculous we had to pay double for one small dish) Seems like a tourist trap to be honest and I don't think we will be back. There are so many better bars with more reasonable prices and better service.

We was on a short trip in Edinburgh and this place was the best to breakfast! So tasty and handmade food and drink.
