We were strolling the Royal Mike and looking for a light lunch. The historic Deacon’s House Cafe hit the spot! We initially were seated outside in the close adjacent to the cafe, but a table opened up inside and we chose to sit there. It was charming inside, with pictures relating the interesting story of Deacon Brodie on the walls. Apparently this was his workshop. The scones with clotted cream and jam were very good, as were the sandwiches. Prices were reasonable and service was good. Would definitely return.

After touring Edinburgh and working up a decent appetite we are so glad we came upon this place. The staff was delightful and we ended up dining in the courtyard of this oddly-historical place where Deacon William Brodie - the inspiration for Stevenson’s “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.” The food was good - I had a very nice ham & mature cheese toastie and she had the quiche Lorraine, also very good, accompanied by a couple cold lagers. A delicious lunch and fun memory!

We asked for a table for six and were looking forward to eating here as it seemed like a popular place. The waitress said she’d sort a table. She came back and said there were two separate tables and when I asked if they were next to each other, she replied in a very dismissive, patronising manner, “That’s all I’ve got, darling.” We found her attitude to be most rude for someone working in the hospitality business. I also don’t appreciate being called darling by someone around 30 years younger than me and certainly don’t expect to be made to feel as if it was an imposition to ask if tables were next to each other. Needless to say, we about-turned and went elsewhere where we had the best of welcomes and excellent service .

Myself and my girlfriend tried this cafe for lunch first week of April 2024. The cafe itself is quite quaint, looks great inside and the staff are pleasant. However the food itself wasn't that appetising! The menu choices were limited to say the least so we both ended up ordering the soup. This bizarrely was served with only one spoon between us so my girlfriend used a teaspoon instead! Additionally the soup was luke warm at best as was my girlfriend's latte and my tea. Hasten to say we didn't stay long and haven't been back since!

I was visiting in Edinburgh with my daughter. And we wanted to have something for the breakfast in the morning. This place was really comfortable. And even though the place was full of people, service was flexible and worked really well and quickly. This place is down an alleyway and we found it quite by chance. It's meant for the tourist crowd and is priced accordingly. We had a traditional breakfast called the full Deacon here. It's self-service here. You order and pay at the counter and they will bring it to your table. The wait is longer than usual but the service is friendly. One slice of toast, one sausage, lean bacon fried to a crisp, smallish pile of scrambled eggs, two tablespoons of beans and one slice of black pudding with a few cherry tomatoes will set you back 10.50. No tea or coffee in this. Nothing to write home about.

Visited here last week with my mother and two children. Ordered two paninis for me and my mother and some crepes for my daughters. As they have an allergy to lemon I asked for one to come with just sugar and the other one to come with Nutella. When they came it was evident that there was no sugar and looked like lemon had been placed on top instead. My daughter tried it and said she didn’t like it. When I tasted them they were dripping in lemon. I went back to the counter to ask about the crepes however was told that the chef had made them and said he had not used lemon but just sugar. Very poor customer service as they would not have it that the order had been made incorrectly and was no offer to try to rectify things even though these were for my daughter. Extremely disappointing and saddening in this day and age especially if you had an allergy to anything..

Visited based on tripadvisor reviews and I'm glad we did. Very friendly staff, quaint cafe and delicious warm scones. The fruit scone was huge and had a good amount of sultanas throughout. We asked for both dairy and non-dairy butter and they were happy to oblige. Our group also sampled shortbread, brownie, lemon drizzle and a chocolate peanut creation. The latter was a bit too rich for my tastes but the rest was enjoyed enormously. Spotted they do a soup and cheese scone lunch deal so might be heading back for that soon!

I should start by saying that me and my husband live in the north of England and we come to Edinburgh at least once a year generally - we love it. Deacons is one of our favourite cafes in the city and we always stop by whenever we visit for a scone and a drink. The scones are the best I’ve ever had anywhere and they usually have a good variety of flavours. This morning we both had a fruit scone with jam and cream and a glass of apple juice which was £6.35 each. The cafe is cosy and tucked just off the Main Street which makes it feel like a hidden gem. My only disappointment this morning was that they didn’t have any of their cinnamon scones - they’re amazing and I’ve never seen them anywhere else!

We visited this Dainty Little Cafe on 23rd October 2020, so during the Pandemic and Central Belt lockdown. The staff were lovely and the Cafe had a good menu range. My missus got a warm croissant with butter and jam and an apple juice which was lovely. This was just short of £5.00. I got the Full Deacon Breakfast consisting of Black Pudding, Haggis Sausage, Scrambled Egg, Streaky Bacon and Cherry Tomato’s this was roughly £12.00 with a mocha. I was slightly dissapointed as I could tell that the food, especially the sausage and black pudding had been microwaved/reheated as it lacked a lot of flavour and these items are usually filled with flavour. When I asked the lady when she came to collect the food she advised the food is made in the morning and reheated in some big oven thing that she can’t describe for each order (a glorified microwave)? I think for the price of the meal the food should be cooked fresh, especially seen as the cafe isn’t huge the chef should be able to cope with this. Also, it would be nice to be checked up on during the meal seen as there was plenty of staff stood chatting to one another and if we had an issue it would go unresolved.Overall 3/5, nice staff, nice looking cafe, poor cooked food.

We stumbled across this gem of a cafe and did not regret it at all. Everything was explained when we came in with how they were doing things different, and how to order etc. Once we decided we were greated by a lovely man who had a great sense of humour. Me being awkward I wanted a BLT with no T (intense dislike for tomatoes) but the rest sounds lovely. So we had a chuckle at my wonderful BL order. We dropped by here while on the Royal Mile and enjoyed morning tea and coffee. All the staff were friendly and attentive. The scones were delicious, as was the lemon drizzle cake, and had a wholesome homemade quality. Will definitely be back.

We stopped at Deacons House for a bite to eat after visiting the castle. Fresh sandwiches, nutella filled crepes and frothy hot chocolates were scrumptious.. just what we needed to warm up!

This cafe, tucked away down a little side street, was such a nice find! The prices were fair and considering the size of the cafe, there was a lot to choose from.

Plenty of choice and at a fair price (not dear, not cheap). It can be a bit noisy and sounds echo, making conversation difficult. Efficient service.

I is just a nice cafe. Not something fancy, not something great. If you find it on your way, you can just pay a visit

I won't lie, I went in because of the pub name (it has an interesting historical background) but the food was absolutely first class. Bangers and mash were on point and the servers were absolutely fantastic. The prices were good, too. 10/10 recomendation.

The selection of whisky is great and the food was alright but felt it was way overpriced for the quality we received. We were also charged £8 twice for one portion of the haggis bon bons (apparently this is some kind of a service charge, ridiculous we had to pay double for one small dish) Seems like a tourist trap to be honest and I don't think we will be back. There are so many better bars with more reasonable prices and better service.

We was on a short trip in Edinburgh and this place was the best to breakfast! So tasty and handmade food and drink.
