We are here on Saturday 25th Jan for an evening meal with friends. The service was friendly and polite, the food, however was disappointing. One of our party returned his dish because it was cold and the second dish came out and was bland. Portions are quite small and menu quite pricey, but then I guess you pay for the name. We weren’t given dessert menus after the mains which was poor but I’m not sure we would have ordered anyway. The staff were quick to rectify the cold meal and took it off the bill along with the service charge however I expected an altogether different experience than the one we got.

This was a nice looking hotel in a lovely area. It is just scraping the 4 stars I have decided to rate it though because there were several points that were disappointing but none of them huge deals to me. However, one of the points should really have been a bigger deal to The Vines because, after booking, my details were clearly compromised somewhere along the line. I had booked via a third party site so it may have been their fault. I received SEVERAL emails and then WhatsApp messages from what was clearly a scam trying to get me to confirm my booking and payment via strange links. I called The Vines directly to confirm the booking and explain that I had received these communications but the lady who answered my call had no interest in the GDPR breach and simply confirmed my booking. To be honest, I couldn't be bothered to school her as to how that could have serious implications for the business. I had managed to get the messages to stop before I called. When we arrived at around 19:30 for our stay, we were informed that no food was being served because they were undergoing renovations. It wasn't the fault of the polite, young man who told us but we felt this should have been communicated prior to our arrival. Fortunately, we weren't that hungry and we did have snacks in our bag. Unfortunately, there wasn't a refrigerator in the room to keep them in despite the room description saying there was. There were many other things missing too- sugar for the tea making facilities, hand towels, TV remote for example. Also, when I booked it said I could bring my dog and this appeared to be at no extra cost. After I had paid for the booking I received a message telling me I had to pay more money on arrival to bring my dog. I wasn't asked to pay this when I got there thankfully. We were placed in an upstairs room and would've preferred a downstairs one since we had our dog with us but there was a decent green area to allow him to eliminate and a footpath opposite the hotel where we could give him a brief leg stretch before we set off the next day. The room was clean and spacious enough too, and the breakfast area was very nice, and our cooked breakfast was also good, and we appreciated it being included in the price. The location was great for us and made it easy to explore pretty Cotswolds villages and towns within a short drive as well as Jeremy Clarkson's pub. There's a lovely big garden centre for browsing in nearby in Burford but, if you're bringing your dog like us, it's not dog friendly sadly. I may consider staying at The Vines again in future, because I'm sure we'll revisit the area but it would depend on the prices.

Utterly charming village pub completely let down by the hostile attitude of the owner. We pulled up intending to have a beer and some lunch and visit churchills grave 3 mins over the road and were subjected to a screaming session from the owner who had just pulled up and was displeased about the amount of cars in the car park. Turns out the primary school opposite had an early finish and parents had used her car park for collection. We had to enter the pub to register our numberplate anyway, and even after telling her we would be returning for lunch after walking over to the grave site (c. 10 mins total when we later went) she continued screaming that she didnt care and we had to move our car, and followed us into the pub, continuing to shout infront of lunchtime customers, even continuing after her barman explained about the early school leaving. We paid for a beer as the car park was then too full of people to move the car easily, but decided we weren't spending lunch there. Car park was empty before half a pint was finished so we moved to the opposite side of the road and visited the grave site as planned. For a countryside 'community pub', that reception was unacceptable. I understand issues with parking around school time but that is part of being a community, and easily manageable without being aggressive to customers. Rural pub footfall is based on ramblers and walkers visiting and being so close to a national landmark must be a huge benefit to their footfall so I am unsure why, if there was such an issue on a private site, signage or other means couldn't have been used, or communication to the school/parents regarding her wishes

Dear Masons Team, I’m writing to express my disappointment following a visit to your restaurant last night (Friday), where we dined as a group of six to celebrate a birthday. Unfortunately, the experience fell significantly short of expectations on multiple fronts, both in terms of food quality and service. To begin with, we ordered the tart, which we were told was unavailable — not an issue on its own, but the beginning of a string of letdowns. The fish and chips arrived with the fish visibly burnt. When I raised this with a member of staff, rather than replacing the dish or offering an apology, the response I received was: “Is it edible?” — not exactly the standard of customer service one would hope for. When I asked for clarification about the “half a kilo pot of prawns,” I was met with a dismissive and sarcastic tone from a waiter who thought he was being amusing, telling me they were “half peeled.” When the dish arrived, none of the prawns were peeled — neither fully nor partially. I sent the dish back and, to your credit, was offered a prawn cocktail as a replacement. The liver dish arrived cut into small pieces resembling bacon lardons — unexpected and unappealing in presentation. The half chicken served was far smaller than what one would reasonably expect for a dish described that way. The Caesar salad at £10 was underwhelming, consisting of little more than a small plate of lettuce. And the so-called bowl of chips? A plate with perhaps a dozen chips on it, if that. While I understand that it was a busy Friday evening over the Easter weekend, the service was noticeably slow, and overall the meal was a major letdown. I do appreciate that a bottle of wine was offered as a gesture, but this was cold comfort when most of the meals were either poorly executed or not as described. This was meant to be a celebratory evening, and instead it became an exercise in frustration. Sadly, we won’t be returning, and I felt it important to provide honest feedback so that you’re aware of how this experience was received. Kind regards, [Your Full Name] [Optional: Contact

Fantastic meal and service for a family celebration. We all really enjoyed our main meals and managed to find room for a delicious pudding! Really friendly staff and will definitely be visiting again. Would highly recommend.

We had a really, really nice meal here. It was a Friday night and we didn't know we'd be able to go out beforehand so had not made a booking. We were grateful to be accommodated and the atmosophere was very friendly. Also, I was recommended a lager that was absolutely delicious.
