During our recent holiday in The Cotswolds we were in the lovely village of Burford. For lunch we went to The Royal Oak. I can imagine that this is a super nice and cosy place in the evening. Unfortunately that doesn't apply during lunch. The food was fine, the atmosphere okay - but clearly less than in Stratford-upon-Avon earlier that week - and the service was not very friendly.

Called for dinner early evening on a week day, not overly busy although was filling up by 19-30. Horizon golden ale wasn't the best kept. A fairly simple menu and I was struggling a little for choice. Steak pie would have been my option but previous reviewers photos had put me off (I saw said dish being served to the next table and it looked far better than the photos on Google) Went for the ham and eggs and a side of onion rings, which was good, the ham was cut thick, quality and plenty of it. I won't include my photo of it because it really doesn't do it justice. Service was friendly and polite. Unfortunately they add a service charge which we really don't get or agree with round our parts, surely the customer should be the judge of the service they receive.

Met friends and stayed for lunch. Drinks were not cheap. Food was ok, had the charcuterie share at a cost of £19.50. 10pcs of dried meat, 4 chunks of toasted sourdough bread, 6 small gherkins, olive oil with balsamic vinegar and 8 olives, in my opinion about £5 over priced! Then had a portion of fries, cost £5.25…..frozen chips reasonable portion, again IMO about £2.50 overpriced. Shame nice enough place but well overpriced

A traditional pub with rooms in the centre of Burford. I stayed here for two nights in a large comfortable room with a king size bed. It has a cosy bar and a separate dining area. They serve the best pies I've ever eaten! Breakfast was also excellent and freshly cooked. Great beer. Friendly staff. There is parking. Highly recommended.

I visited on a Friday lunchtime and got a table for two. The service was lovely and the ambience really good, however it did take 30 minutes for a simple order of two dishes. We got the ham and fish & chips. The ham was decent, however the fish & chips were disappointing. They fish was from frozen and the batter was very oily, the chips were mediocre too and the mashed peas were inedible.

No room review as beer and meal only. However, we're sure they're fab! Called in on the off chance that a table was free and they fitted us in which was much appreciated. I love local and will most certainly visit again

We stayed for one night and the room was very good. Right in the heart of the village with nice beers and food. Limited parking so we parked on the road, semi reassured that the traffic wardens are unlikely to be out. Weekends it’s a very tourist area, if you can go in the week it’s a very laid back feel.

Excellent pies, but I didn't like my veggies being high on boiled cabbage. Equally impressive to the pie & gravy is the prawn in cream nduja sauce. We enjoyed the chocolate orange pud too. Wish we were local not just for the food, but also the friendly local crowd. My pie hating husband also loved it. Service is like a traditional pub so the prices are too high for the current ambience.. but I would pay the price for excellent and generously portioned food.

If you're after a community spirit-driven public house, perhaps give this pub a miss. Some (real) locals still frequent it, but there are better pubs in Burford. It's a shame when staff make you feel in the way and a bother with an abrupt manner. I won't go back unless having to meet others there.

We actually stayed here for three nights to attend a nearby wedding. The booking process, welcome by staff, and the room itself were excellent. Clean, good bed, warm. good bathroom and shower - could not complain, and we were very comfortable. The breakasts that went with this booking were superb as well - hot, fresh, nicely presented, with top class local country produce (eggs, bacon, sausage etc.). Unfortuantely we could'nt sample a main meal here, but I am sure it would have been good, considering every day was rammed with locals who had booked dinner or lunch. Good little bar too, with Wadworth 6X and Henry's IPA on tap (what's not to like!), and the pub kept in the quaint style and architecture to the rest of historic Burford. The Royal Oak is a real gem off the High Street in Burford.

Food was delicious. Actually the best food we’ve had since we’ve been in the area. The one thing that brought our experience down was when we paid the bill. Our bill was for just over 58 pounds. I paid but noticed he charged me 85 pounds and held the payment terminal so it was upside down to me. It could have been an honest mistake but if I hadn’t caught it I would have been overcharged by 27 pounds. Just be aware.

While driving throughout the Cotswolds, I stopped and had a wonderful meal at The Royal Oak! This pub had an extensive gluten free menu full of pub favourites, which I found very intriguing. I ordered a Sunday roast with beef, the fish and chips, and a gluten free beer. The fish and chips were the standout - fluffy, thick chips, and lovely crispy fish. I also adored the horseradish dip. Unexpected winner! The Sunday roast had nice sides, and the gluten free Yorkshire pudding was delightful. The gravy was also very flavourful, despite being a bit runnier than I prefer. My only complaint was the toughness of the beef - after being inquired by the server, I asked for it to be rare. Unfortunately, it arrived a lot more cooked and tough than I had hoped. I didn’t end up finishing it. Overall, if you are gluten free and want to indulge in proper pub grub, this is a must in the area!

Holidaying in local area & decided to try a local pub for Sunday lunch, and I'm glad we chose The Royal Oak. The roast beef was a good size, very hot, lots of veg & was absolutely delicious! I had to try the waffle for dessert which needed the scoop of ice-cream to lift it, but was charged extra £2.95 for it which makes it a pricey dessert. The ice cream should have been included with the dessert or an extra £1 charged imo. Partner had sticky toffee pudding which was really good. Sourdough roll for the starter was very doughy, slices of bread would have been better, and there wasn't enough butter or balsamic vinegar in the pot with olive oil. Overall, a really good meal, with friendly attentive staff.

It's all about the pies! We'd booked a table for 6pm and arrived early. We were quickly seated with menus and drinks. We have spent the past two years seeking out the best steak pie in the UK, having had very high quality pie experiences in Northumbria and Cumbria, we are often dubious when trying a new pie as we have been let down many times. I am very pleased to say that The Cotswold Pie Company steak and ale pie, as eaten at The Royal Oak, is officially the best pie we've ever tasted. Highly recommend.

Fantastic little pub, cosy and characterful and always busy with a great atmosphere. I couldn’t fault the food, we shared a charcuterie platter to start with sourdough and butter, our mains were half a roast chicken and baked sole, sides of kale and chips. There are only 6 wines by the glass, the red served too cold for me and these were comparatively average. We shared a sticky toffee sundae. Exceptional value and a great evening.

Three phone conversations with the hotel management eventually confirmed that a Sunday roast could be obtained in the Terrace resturant. A table for 7 was booked and confirmed. On arrival the Terrace resturant was set up for a wedding ceremony. No other dining tables were apparent. On querying this with bar staff we were abruptly told "not our problem".Eventually found a deputy manager who set about laying up a dining table amongst the wedding guests ! Meanwhile we tried other local venues but couldn't get in within our timescale. We eventually sat for our anticipated Sunday lunch in a crowded golf club bar surrounded by a multitude of wedding guests. The food was obviously recently pulled out of the freezer, looked and tasted same ! HOPELESS !!We recommend training for front of house management in the art of coordination and courtesy for members of the bar staff.

We had a really, really nice meal here. It was a Friday night and we didn't know we'd be able to go out beforehand so had not made a booking. We were grateful to be accommodated and the atmosophere was very friendly. Also, I was recommended a lager that was absolutely delicious.
