We came to the Old Club House as we were going to Buxton Opera House for a show. We tried to book online but it said the time wasn’t available but thought we would give it a go and see if there was space. We arrived about 5:45 and the eating area was quiet so managed to get in straight away! We were served by Cas who let us know the grill was being replaced next week so there weren’t any burgers available. That wasn’t a problem with us as we weren’t ordering burgers anyway. Cas was attentive and came over to us to let us know our food was on its way which was really nice , she also made sure we were enjoying our meal. Cas was lovely and really polite and friendly. We ordered the king prawn starter and Cas came over to us to let us know they’d run out of prawns and to offer an alternative. We ordered the prawns and chrozio and changed the prawns for chicken due to the above , halloumi fries , beef bourgingnon, Camembert sharer as a starter , the apple and blackcurrant pie and the caramelised biscuit cheesecake. All the food was lovely and came out pretty quickly for a Friday night. One of us had the Camembert sharer as a main, for two people the size of the Camembert may be a little small but as a main for one it was the perfect size. The prize was decent for two people and if we were coming again , we wouldn’t be mad!

Had a wonderful early evening meal with my partner and another couple. The food was excellent ( steak pie - generous portions and reasonably priced), atmosphere convivial ( we sat by the fireside) and the service first rate. Really friendly, welcoming staff. In short dining here was the perfect end to a perfect date having enjoyed a 5 hours wander earlier. I seldom go 5* in the few reviews I do leave, but to go less would be churlish of me. Thank you Devonshire Arms and the staff. Oh, btw we also enjoyed the beer.

I had booked us in for breakfast at 10.30am but there was no table reserved for us and we were told to sit where we liked, the only table available for the 3 of us being one covered in dirty plates and cups. Whilst I cleared the table the other 2 went to the buffet, returning with partial breakfasts
no eggs, no black pudding and over cooked bacon. By the time I got there the bacon was gone and there was now no sausage or even a plate to put anything on. When someone finally emerged from the kitchen I asked for a plate and was told more food was being cooked and would be 2 minutes so I waited to then be told it would be another 5 minutes. I decided to sit back down at this point so I could at least catch up with my family as they finished their food. On returning to the buffet some freshly cooked eggs were brought out but I was told the sausage / bacon would be another 2 mins
.the sausages finally arrived but still no sign of the bacon, given that there were by now only a couple of eggs left as they were largely being used by one of the chefs to fill takeaway bags I decided to start putting what food there was on my plate until the bacon finally arrived! The rest of my family then got to watch me eat
.. The staff were working flat out but there weren’t enough of them and to be honest even when the food did arrive it wasn’t great
. It’s a shame because this is a really handy venue to meet up with our son but we won’t be back.

Chips fried in vegetable oil (separately from anything else). One of the few places with vegan options (just a wrap & spring rolls, but still...).

End of tourist season, so waiting for a city tour bus can be disappointing when it doesn't arrive. A walk into the centre can uncover a few sights. Lunch once ordered can quickly, food was hot, with a waterside view.

Non existent customer service. They also don’t have anything you want to order - we tried to order a chocolate sundae, cookie dough, milkshake, chocolate fudge cake and was told they were all not available. This was after paying. The entire party had to then choose alternatives they weren’t entirely keen on because we had already paid. I find it hard to believe they didn’t know before. We also witnessed a staff member being quite unkind to another employee who was taking orders, and seating walk ins, telling him off and telling him to wash plates instead of seating walk ins. When our food did arrive, only 2 out of the 3 items came. We waited 25 mins for a Sundae to arrive, when it didn’t we told the staff who said it was coming. It then took 10mins for this to arrive. It really shouldn’t take 35 mins to put some ice cream in a bowl. Youre better off going to Heavenlys down the road. Don’t waste your time here.

The Chicken & Stuffing wrap with side salad was very well received by my wife. I had the Chicken & Stuffing Burger with chips. That was very tasty as well. Succulent chicken breast. Well done to Wetherspoons for offering such tasty Christmas meals and well done to the Sugar Loaf chefs!!

Just returned from lunch. The food was good, however the chap with a beard whom I think was the manager was very rude to me and to his staff. He walked away with our drinks, I followed him to ask if they were for us. He rudely said 'no' then proceeded to bring them to our table with no apology for how he spoke to me. He also shouted at his colleague in front of me and other customers. He was unpleasant and the atmosphere felt toxic.

I’m writing this review based on two stays I had here in December. I stayed here for one night after a visit to Chatsworth at the beginning of December. Then again over this New Year weekend for 3 nights. Ironically we were given the same room 107. The second visit we spent 2 nights in 203, after problems on our first night in 107. LOCATION- the location of this hotel is perfect it is 5 minutes drive from the M1 close to the village of Clowne with shops and some take aways. It’s a good base to explore clumber park, Derbyshire dales and chesterfield. CHECK IN - the first time we checked in there was a big Christmas party going on & a band playing in reception. It was extremely busy, but we were checked in quickly. The second time we arrived at 7pm to find nobody at reception. We waited 5 minutes and still nobody turned up. So we went looking for staff in the bar! We eventually located the receptionist. The hotel reception smells very fresh, is modern and clean. ROOM - the room was large with a big bed, huge TV, tea/coffee, biscuits, bottles of water & black out curtains. Room 107 was on the first floor and room 203 on the second. The bed in 107 was two singles pushed together, not great for couples with a big gap down the middle of the bed. The bed in 203 was an actual double. 203 was an attic room and had some slanting ceilings, there were no blackout curtains just a Roman blind that let lots of light in. Both rooms were very modern, exceptionally clean and we loved them. The rooms were very hot, despite setting heating to the lowest setting. There was a fan in the wardrobe, but no air con. We loved the lighting and decor in the rooms. BATHROOM- the bathroom was large, modern and clean. It has a walk in shower and very fluffy towels. There was also some nice toiletries provided. FOOD - the restaurant looks lovely, modern quirky and bright. The bar is next to the restaurant, with a court yard for warmer days. Breakfast was included and was lovely. The first time we stayed the hotel was busy with party guests and we had to stand waiting for breakfast food because it had ran out. This time was different and all food was replenished before it ran out, despite the hotel being busy again. We also ordered room service on both visits. We found the food to be really nice. But the guy bringing it brought one tray, then had to run back to the kitchen to get the other tray. Surely a trolley would be a better idea?? The staff in the restaurant all seemed like they needed training. We were taken to our table New Year’s Day morning and the young waitress just stood staring at us. The food had been moved in to the snug room, but we weren’t told this. We had to ask and also had to ask twice to get a cup of tea, as nobody offered. The only decent waiter we met on both occasions was a lad with glasses and ginger hair. He was very attentive and asking people if everything was okay. NEGATIVES - the only negatives of our first stay was waiting for breakfast items, which is why we chose to come back. This time there was some sort of loud extractor fan going on in the ceiling of our room 107 & the heating wouldn’t seem to go lower than 24 degrees. It started in the middle of the night, so we hardly slept on our first night. We reported it to reception in the morning and a guy with a walkie talkie told us he’d switch it off. We got back 6 hours later from a day out, only to find it was still on. I went down to report to reception again and was told ‘Craig’ who deals with it was out. So she’d send him up when he got back. We decided to turn the tv on the drowned out the noise only to realise that no plug sockets were working either, so we couldn’t even have a cuppa. I went back to reception after an hour of waiting for ‘Craig’. Before I even got chance to say about the plug sockets, I was told by the receptionist that I had to appreciate she was on her own! When I did get chance to politely tell her about the sockets she offered to move us to room 203. The next morning we decided not to go to breakfast and instead have a lie in to catch up on the lack of sleep. But at 11am the cleaner knocked on the door and walked straight in, not even giving us chance to answer. The do not disturb sign was also on the door, but she’d not seen it. When she realised we were in bed, she shouted from the door ‘are you going out today or not?’ Not really very good practice in my opinion & I’ve stayed in a lot of hotels. Other negatives were having to supply a £50 holding fee on your card for each night you are there. Also long queues at reception at certain times. OVERALL- If I was rating this hotel on cleanliness, decor, location and food, I would definitely give it 5 stars. It’s a beautiful new, bright, vibrant and quirky hotel, which is why we booked to go back so soon. But it seems that a lot of the staff let this hotel down. It seems that some of the reception staff need to learn to ‘listen’. The young lad on reception new years morning was very professional & seemed good at his job. But some of the restaurant staff really need training on how to actually interact with people, which should be a minimum requirement. It seems that also a ‘lack’ of staff lets this hotel down. If there was a maintenance problem surely there should be someone on call who can look at the problem sooner than an hour. Reception can get very busy and have long queues, due to lack of staff. New Year’s Eve was the only time i saw two staff. It’s a real shame that our experience wasn’t great this time. Which is why I have only rated it 3 stars. Maybe if things improve I may return, because it is a really nice hotel that could be great.

Had an awful experience at this Wetherspoons . My partner went to order food at the bar , in which a lady at the bar asked if anybody was waiting, my partner said yes and she didn’t rely so she went to put something in the dishwasher . When she came back she asked the same question and my partner again said yes in which she made the rude comment “you could of said something the first time” My partner brushed it off and went to order our food , she then ID him and got really rude asking for other forms of identification in which he had to use his bank card (his ID was legit he’s 24) She then again made another comments under her breathe and said she needed to see my ID as he was ordering for me too . I then had to go up to the bar (which wasn’t an issue ) and I handed her my ID . She then proceeded to shout at me and say “ if your going to have an attitude I’m not serving you it’s my job to make sure your not underage “ My partner was obviously getting annoyed with how she spoke to me in which I told him it’s fine and she then started mouthing off again . We then asked if we “could please be served by someone else” She then refused to serve us cancelled our whole order on the till and told us we couldn’t have any food and to leave . Also refused to tell us her name . This was on the 28th November just after 6pm. She had black braids and and glasses and was wearing a body cam so hope this gets checked . We did then just have to order on the app but I’ve never been spoken to like that ever . Rudest experience I’ve ever had.
