Friendly and professional service. Exceptional pies. Lovely building. Came for lunch as a couple. Sat in the brasserie which has a different atmosphere to the old part of the pub. Still lovely though. Exceptional service and very friendly. Food was very nice (steak pie and fish cakes new potatoes). My wife went for a spa day with friends the next day so I came back solo after a big dog walk and sat in the bar. Service was again really exceptional. Very dog friendly in the bar. Every member of staff I met were all great. Food still good but not quite up to the day before. Burger and Sticky Toffee Pud). Still good but not as good as the amazing pie. Prices were as per the norm at time of writing. Bottom line is, feel confident in booking for upper end pub food and a warm welcome. Reasonable price for post Covid/Truss/Ukraine.

Had an evening meal next to the bar and it was amazing. The steak and ale pie is the best pie I've ever eaten, my partner had an incredible steak and the pudding was divine. The orange sorbet is so good! I'm really surprised at the lower rating as the food quality was worth the price and the pub is gorgeous and historical. Really highly recommended

My husband and I ate here with our young daughter. Food was standard gastropub - the usuals like haddock and chips, roasts with veg. Everything we chose was Ok but nothing to shout about. It’s a lovely place for a drink though if the weather’s sunny and very close to Chatsworth. Service was terribly slow - 40mins before we got a meal.

Heard a lot about this pub so had high expectations. Nice location of course. Friendly staff. Limited menu understandably but there was a good choice. I chose a halloumi dish but when it arrived it was just halloumi! Couldn't fault the flavours but could have done with a accompaniment? Far too much for one person really. Wasn't as impressed as I thought I would be. Bit pricey also.

We only popped in for a drink after a very long tiring walk, soaking wet. Staff were extremely welcoming which was made even more special given that we were given to understand by our hotel (in next village), that no pub would welcome you in unless you had booked a table for a meal!!Efficient friendly bar staff and also the manager who we spent time chatting with. Also started talking to another couple (we were all close to the fire.. no wonder it was cold and raining outside.), they were staying and were very complimentary about the rooms and food. We looked at at the menu which was varied and well priced.

A belated Christmas present that included a visit to the magnificent Chatsworth House nearby, we spent a night at the Devonshire Arms, Beeley, a quaint old pub in a quaint old village square. Our neat, bright ground floor room, Ashop, featured country decor and is one of five 'Classic' rooms located in a row of traditional cottages across the square from the pub. The bathroom, which is partly a wetroom with shower, is kitted out with accessibility grab rails and handles and a shower seat. The pub is dog friendly, but thankfully the Ashop apparently isn't.In the oldfashioned bar, after a couple of drinks, including a G&T with local Chatsworth artisan gin, we were allocated a table with social distancing measures in place, though the one-way system was largely ignored by other guests. The pub decor is a bit of a mix and match, stripy banquette seating contrasting with a garish blue bar front, faded carpet and functional but out of place contemporary tables. From the short menu - five starters and six mains, including vegetarian options - we both chose potted crab, hand picked Cornish white crab, tarragon, sweetcorn and I had the beer battered haddock with triple cooked chips, garden peas and homemade tartare sauce, while Ted had roast hake with stout braised mussels, chorizo, spring onion and kale. Other items included gin cured salmon, wild mushroom fricassee, chicken supreme and 7 ounce beef fillet or 28-day dry-aged ribeye. To drink we had a bottle of chablis and another of 2017 Ruca Malen Malbec. We both felt the menu seemed expensive given our experience in pubs more local to us, but agreed the dishes we'd ordered were delicious and excellently cooked and presented, so were good value for money. Service from the visored team was attentive.Afterward I slept very soundly under the cosy quilt.Next morning in the large, airy dining room reached via the pub bar, we enjoyed our pre-ordered breakfast - a selection of juices (orange and grapefruit for us), granola which I mixed with fruit yoghurt, an English fry for Ted, a very generous helping of smoked salmon with scrambled eggs for me, and toast and filter coffee. All very tasty. The only glitch during our stay was the patchy wifi signal, which was faint both in the room and even in the bar and breakfast room. A blocked shower drain caused water to flood our wetroom and almost overflow into the bedroom, but this was all fixed and remedied while we were at dinner so didn't present a problem. I felt it was a competent and speedy response to a potential crisis, as all the rooms were fully booked. We really enjoyed our stay at the Devonshire Arms and would return, hopefully in sunny weather to better explore the area and revisit Chatsworth House and estate.

Roast potatoes light and crisp, vegetables cooked al- dente, enormous yorkshire pudds. The staff were extremely attentive, and unobtrusive, nothing was too much trouble, and we felt extremely comfortable with a high level of Covid precautions being adhered to with- in the premises. Its understandably quite a limited menu at the moment, but we had grilled mackerel which was delicious. Clever to make potato salad with tartare and complimented with water cress and lovely dried cherry tomatoes. Really light so for once we had puddings, sticky toffee for Dad which he enjoyed although he prefers it with dates, I loved the very seasonal blackberry parfait with compressed apple and ginger crumble. Lovely glass of house white and a pint of Timothy Taylor, great service and comfortably covid compliant.

Occasionally it’s lovely to spend on yourself for a treat, and spending a night here with dinner and breakfast is just that occasion. The dinner was either from the a la carte menu, or from the daily suggested menu. Guests are given a £30 credit towards our food and drink for dinner. The food was really excellent. Just a little surprised that my ribeye steak and chips were served without any vegetables, but never mind. The accommodation is in one of the cottages directly opposite the restaurant/bar, and was really well appointed. The toilet was one of those “Japanese style” toilets with the bidet type of spray that washes your bits! (I’ve never used one before but once I had worked out what buttons needed to be pressed was quite a shock!)It may sound expensive, but if you worked out what was included in the package, is not so expensive.

Two of us booked for Sunday lunch here as part of a day in the Peak District. The inn is definitely popular and despite having a large car-park, there was some difficulty in finding a place. We arrived a mite early but were conducted straight to the table in the conservatory portion, where service continued well with drinks to the table while we ordered. The older portion of the inn by the bar would be a more special place to eat but the conservatory was light and also quite spacious. The quality of the draught beer was good and the meal that followed was fine without being exceptional and although other reviewers have talked about the high price, that may be to do with the local average - we were visiting from the Cambridge area and, in that context, the prices here seemed par for the course. A 3-course meal would set you back £30-35 per person. There was a good easy-access WC, which was important for the the one of us just a week short of their 90th birthday. Service throughout was fine. We would recommend this as a reliable place for a somewhat upmarket lunch if you're in the Chatsworth area but maybe not quite of the highest quality.

We were left standing at the bar for several minutes as the bar staff moved back and forth stacking glasses and doing bits and bobs not really taking any notice of us. Finally a young chap served us drinks but no smiles, no welcome, no patter, nothing just £15.10 for a glass of Sauvignon Blanc and a pint of Black Sheep which is almost London money. We sat down and chatted and while my wife was still drinking her drink, as I finished mine an older female member of staff in wellies flew past our table and whipped my glass away without asking if I’d finished never mind a friendly enquiry as to whether I would like another drink or not. We both felt the customer service here was dreadful and the prices were extortionate and would definitely not recommend it

When making a reservation for 2 people we enquired what was Sunday roast and to our delight was told roast beef - just what we both wanted. When we arrived our table wasn’t quite ready, we ordered a bottle of Malbec ready to have with our roast beef lunch and half a beer. When being showed to our table we were casually told there was no roast beef - we were gutted!!! We looked at the menu and there was nothing else either of us wanted. We said we weren’t staying as we’d specifically made it crystal clear that was the reason for our visit. There was no apology in fact the manager didn’t care at all - we were told we had to pay for the wine even though we hadn’t drank any of it apart from my husband having a sip to taste it was ok. The manager argued the bottle isn’t sold by the glass and continually insisted we paid for the bottle £24 still no apology. We ended up paying £10.55 for half a beer and a very small glass of wine. We were so disgusted with the way we were treated we paid and left with still no apology or any signs that the manager was bothered or even cared!!!

We had the burger and chips, along with the steak and ale pie. Both were of high quality - especially the pie which had some of the flakiest pastry I've ever eaten and was accompanied by a little pot of extra gravy for those who love sauce as I do. We had to wait awhile, but you could taste that everything was fresh and piping hot upon arrival so it was worth it. Service was friendly and decor lovely - overall we found the venue incredibly charming. It's really surprising to see negative reviews as our experience was thoroughly enjoyable and I'm still thinking about the pie a month later! We also liked that on the menu, local sources for produce were mentioned - a nice reminder that you're not getting the usual food and ingredients found in every chain-managed pub house.

For the grandchildren. We have been before and had a good meal. Today was rather lack lustre. We had to ask the waitress if she could come and take our order after sitting like lemons for at least 20 mins. After another long wait we asked her if we could have our bread and olives, a simple to prepare thing surely, when our main courses came, my fish was lovely, but the chips were huge, dry and not very warm. My daughter said her burger was tasty if a bit fatty. My 10 year old had penne pasta which was just that, coated in a bit of sauce. My other granddaughter had sausage and mash with peas which looked good and she enjoyed it. The waitress seemed terrified and her voice was so soft, we couldn’t tell what she said and had to constantly ask her to repeat herself. Maybe it was an unfortunate day, and the staff were all exhausted from New Years eve, but a little enthusiasm wouldn’t go amiss. This place used to be so good. And it should be considering it is on the Chatsworth estate and under their ownership I believe. It isn’t cheap so they need to take a look at the place and quick!

Restaurant on Chatsworth estate so expected to pay a premium however quite reasonably priced. Whole party thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and meals. Food quality very good and from beef to turkey or ox cheek. Desserts also received the thumbs up. Unrushed throughout service was efficient.

A party of 5 of us had dinner at the Devonshire Arms. Firstly I must say the staff and the service was very good. The food however was a different matter. As a starter I had the prawn cocktail at £8. Advertised as prawns, cos lettuce, avocado, and Maria rose sauce. What was served was, small tasteless prawns, rocket, and no avocado....at all!

Had an excellent evening meal here, the food was very good and the service also, really top notch. It is quite small so I think booking is essential, we were lucky as we called in on route to Chatsworth House and booked.

Went for Sunday lunch and to be honest, was not brilliant, considering it’s around £15.00 for lunch there was not enough vegetables and pork was very fatty. Beef was good and chicken ok. Deserts were good and hot. Biggest disappointment was the 10% service charge put on the bill when no indication on any literature that it would be, and protest from staff when refused to pay, asking what was wrong with the service. Nothing to write home about the service but I tip where valid and at my choice, not the establishments. Then to cap it all when paying by card there was a request for another tip, not sure staff would see it.

The food was tasty and you could tell that good quality ingredients were used. I still think that paying for sides is a bit much to ask for when a main dish ranges between £18-25.

This pub/hotel obviously thinks of itself as a superior place to eat judging by the prices of food on the menu and relatively little choice of dishes. For instance I don't care for white fish or cheese and all the main dishes had one or other of these foods in them. So I decided to have a starter and sweet. I chose prawn and avocado cocktail in Marie-rose sauce. There was no avocado in it and no accompanying bread and butter. When I complained about it the waitress said the avocado was pureed. It was said very curtly as if she had been told to say this more than once. It was £8 which would have been okay if it had contained some avocado. My husband's meal was fine so we ordered our next course which was cheese and biscuits for him and a chocolate mousse for me. We waited for half an hour and still nothing appeared apart from a spoon. Twice we asked passing staff where the afters were explaining that we had a bus to catch. We even paid in advance in order to speed up our departure. With 7 minutes to go for the bus we went to the bar and had to ask for a refund on the afters. Won't be going there again. Overpriced and underwhelming!

This place is great, absolutely buzzing on a weekday evening. Small menu but everything looked tempting and was extremely good. Excellent local beer, nice and not over priced wine list. Despite being busy, food was prompt, service good. would highly recommend and definitely return.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We stayed here on the dinner, bed and breakfast deal so this is a bit of a review about the whole stay, not just the restaurant. We stayed in one of the rooms upstairs in the main building which was reasonably spacious and had a separate sitting room. There were complimentary packets of Chatsworth biscuits although ours had been opened which put us off a bit. only 4 “proper” teabags although literally dozens of peppermint, earl grey etc. I am deaf and we agreed a specific dinner table with the staff long before dinner which would be quiet and they agreed to reserve it for us. We came down at the appointed time and found actually it was the only table occupied by another couple and another right next to the busy main bar had been set for us. Nothing was said apart from a raised eyebrow but we returned from the bar to find the cutlery had been moved to another, different, table ever so slightly further from the noise. All a bit odd as we had agreed something quite specific. Starters were good, I loved the Jerusalem artichoke risotto. My wife ordered the monkfish as a main. We don’t get away as a couple very often and, as the starters had arrived VERY quickly I asked the waitress if we could have 10 minutes before mains. The monkfish when it came was like a bullet and imagine it had been ready to come out as soon as we had finished the starter. It was also the very tail end and quite stringy. It went back and I asked for my steak to be kept warm. There was no more monkfish but they offered cod instead which came almost raw. When we questioned this we were told this was how chef liked to serve it! Anyway, it went back again, we aren’t fussy eaters and I can’t remember ever having sent food back before, never mind twice. The steak by this time was quite well done (ordered medium rare) but apart from that was fine although there was a £10 supplement for steak on the DBB deal and the menu price was £28 for what seemed to be about 5oz when it came which quite honestly is far too much for what you get. Wine was OK and reasonable value. Breakfast I have to say was excellent. To be fair they knocked off the fish and a round of drinks without being asked which gets it a three but could be so much better. A bit odd that the TV advertises another Devonshire Arms up the road as you go into your bedroom.

Back in Beeley staying in a holiday cottage for the second time this year. Part of what makes our holidays here every year so special are our visits to the Devonshire Arms and the warm and friendly welcome we get. Wonderful staff - Jaz, H, Sammi, Becky, Andy and Jill (and indeed everyone there) are all such lovely people and provide fantastic service. As always, the food was truly wonderful - we ate here three times during our week including Sunday lunch. We also enjoyed several visits in the afternoon for drinks sitting outside in the sunshine after our walk/bike ride.

What very nice people. We were warmly welcomed and directed to our table and our orders for drinks and food quickly taken. Bar service was rather slow simply due to pressure of orders and the food did take quite a long time to arrive, but we were kept well informed. Food was delicious, staff very attentive, ambiance pleasant. If we had been given a few chunks of bread and some olive oil and balsamic vinegar on arrival we would not have noticed the delayed food and would certainly have awarded 5 Stars.

We visited the Devonshire Arms twice during our visit to the Peak District. First time was good with tasty food off the main menu, the second time we ordered the specials, bream which was served substantially undercooked. We complained, and were told that they would cook replacements, but what we got back were the original bream a bit more cooked, but served with what was now almost cold hollandaise and potatoes, tainted with blood from the first serving. It turned out that they did not have any more bream, so had recooked, but they should have at least replaced with fresh veg.

Although we enjoyed our meal here we were disappointed that if you want to eat in the garden you must pay at the bar for everything you order at the time rather than putting it on a bill. We had taken our daughter for a nice meal out but it was inconvenient to have to keep going in to the bar - via the main road - to order and pay for every item. If you want to eat inside I recommend it but if you want to eat outside go elsewhere!

Firstly I want to say I have been her before and was a bit disappointed but thought I’d give it another try. BUT I will never return to this place. I’ll go through the pros and cons. Pro: for the most part the food was tasty. Even so, desserts were served on warm plates and the chocolate mousse desserts had turned into chocolate custard, literally. They do cater for children if you are under 10, less than 6 feet tall and are smaller than size 8 shoe (no I am not kidding this is what the menu says), they welcome dogs. Cons:not sure the food is worth the money (we spent £150) incredibly poor management and organisation; staff don't acknowledge you, they don’t smile, barely give eye contact, some are brusque, they lack any sort of customer service training, as do the management. We had a table booked in the restaurant and ended up in the bar. 20 mins wait for order to be taken, 50 mins before we got bread and olives, we only got it then because we had spoken to, who I believe was the manager. The excuse was, ‘we have a party in’. Sorry isn't this a hotel/pub/restaurant? There are no dedicated table waiters so whoever is available brings your food. They either all think someone else is serving you, or they don’t care, either way for the most part you get completely ignored. Staff know nothing about who ordered what or what you ordered. They say eg ‘the chicken?’ but then just ‘plonk’ the meals down in front of anyone and until being reminded forgot a sauce for one of the meals. I think the worst thing for me is that the management don’t seem to see there is an issue and didn’t see a problem with the length of wait. We received no apology for the poor service. Clearly they don’t care what people think because there are other reviews about the lack of customer service. We are not in isolation, I saw and heard staff speak to other customers in an unfriendly and ignorant way. To the management - If you don’t have the capacity to serve people within a reasonable time, don’t continue to take bookings, it’s just greedy. If there is a delay, tell people, given them the choice to stay or leave, don’t just be ignorant. Get some training for you and your staff in customer service and think about having table waiters so at least customers are served by someone who knows what’s been ordered. I’m sure it will continue to be busy because it is part of the Chatsworth estate but maybe The Devonshire group should take note of comments on Tripadvisor.

Delicious meal in attractive surroundings - the local lamb shoulder with couscous was particularly unctuous - and for the quality of the food and wine it was pretty reasonably priced. However, we encountered some challenges with the service because it we suspect the restaurant and bar are too lightly staffed. It took some time for us to be seated - on my own I would only be marginally concerned but my wife is disabled and can't stand for more of a couple of minutes - our aperatifs took a while to arrive and I had to go to the bar to enquire as to the whereabouts of our wine. Finally, undercooked french beans were fashionable in the 1970s but it would be good for this fashion to be dropped. Still, we would definitely return but the operation needs a bit a sharpening

Back again last week to stay in a cottage in the village (our 14th consecutive year) and were lucky to eat here 5 times. Special call out to Jaz, Sammi, H and Becky who welcomed us back as friends and we enjoyed some fantastic food and service. Good to meet the new Manager (Andy). Only negative was poor/rude service from the new bar person (Adam) on our last evening who blatantly ignored us twice when taking drinks and then food orders - we have never experienced that before in this pub (which is very special to us) and we found it very upsetting. We have another week in the our cottage booked for early Sept so will be back for food/drinks.
