Stayed here for 3 nights over the bank holiday weekend with my partner and dog for a walking/sightseeing break away. Room was clean with very comfortable bed and powerful shower, plenty of space. Food and drink good and staff amazing, very professional, helpful and nothing was too much with an excellent delicious breakfast each morning. Special shout out to Lewis and Jake behind the bar who was exceptional in making us feel welcome. Highly recommend.

I visited with 4 friends tonight to try the chinese Menu . We all ordered at the same time . After 45 minutesThe first meal arrived which was wrong but my friend ate it anyway as was hungry. The 2nd meal came out 15 minutes later. The last 2 meals arrived 20 minutes later after asking twice . It would have been nice to all actually eat together . The lad behind the bar was very apologetic and said the delays were because of the amount of take away orders they had . Surely customers sat in the pub waiting should take priority . When the food arrived it was actually really nice . I think its also very cheeky to charge £3 each to eat in from the chinese menu .

Stayed the 1 night with the wife March 24. The room, Spacious, functional with a comfy bed. The cleanliness was ok bedding towels visible areas but there were areas that could do with a good clean. The extraction fan in bathroom was extremely dusty, behind the bed head and some furniture also dusty. That said it didn't in any way detract from the good stay we had with a brilliant night's sleep. The bar/restaurant, Lovely bar and restaurant with coal fires nice atmosphere and good seating areas. We had the Chinese sit down meal in the evening and I have to say probably one of the best Chinese meals we've ever had, everything was spot on and full of flavour. The best thing though was the staff, the most professional and friendly bar staff we've ever come across. They all were very attentive polite and friendly well done the owners should be proud of them all.

Disappointing really. I mean, alright, everything you need. Well, I say that, but, out of the 2 toilets, one was an accesible one (tick), the other was more than accessible - it had No Door! Not even a door nearby waiting to be put back! So. Weird. Actually, caveate that, I was that surprised, there might have been a door I didnt notice (pretty sure there wasn't), but still. Adequate place, recently done up, but seemingly on the cheap. Football pub really. The staff were very nice and I'm sure you'd get a nice meal (we just had a quick drink), but called "The Little John" in Hathersage, wasted opportunity I'd say.

Had a lovely meal at this pub. Pies were gorgeous and scampi was lovely. Definitely going back. Stayed for 1 night and very happy with the room in every way.

Beautifully presented,but fish a chips were cold,not warm....just cold. Never again......total water of money.

Had lunch at this pub with friends. The worst meal I have had for a very long time. I can't say anything good about it. The pub was cold...a fire was lit when we went in so it hadn't had time to warm up the room. A friend left her coat on!! No atmosphere....few people in , which was no surprise after having had a bad experience with the meal! First time we have been here and will certainly be the last.!

Stayed at this hotel and I wouldn’t stay again it’s dirty and not run afficiently at all. The tiles on bathroom floor all cracked, dead flies all over window cill, sealant around shower was full of mould, mirror in room looked like someone had sneezed down it and cleaner had left it the only good thing I can say was the bed was really comfy. I booked it threw booking.com and I’m sure they don’t go and look at the places that they put on there site as if they did this would be going on.Also no one there to tell you about what to do for breakfast you just go in and help yourself so really anyone could walk in of the street. No one there to hand keys in to on departure. We didn’t complain about the dirtiness of the room as I’m fed up of complaining to places like this and nothing gets done or changes so sites like trip advisor mite get them to get there act together. I hope they see this to realise that it needs improvement.

On entering I thought I was in the wrong hotel as the photos on the net certainly looked different. The lady at the bar was very friendly and showed us to our deluxe room which was situated opposite the pub. If you have a problem with stairs, not for you, as they are very narrow and steep and getting a case up isn’t easy. The room was small, comfortable bed and had a large bathroom. Unfortunately, the towel heater didn’t work and as the weather was cold and rainy it soon steamed up and the towels didn’t dry. There is no room service even if you request it, some excuse about Covid!!! and nobody looked at the heater as they told me they don’t enter the room after guests have moved in!!! They were accommodating and left fresh towels and toilet paper outside the door. A full English breakfast was served in buffet form which didn’t look very appetizing but there was plenty of it if you wanted to eat it. The fried eggs swimming in oil, bacon not eatable, orange juice in the packet and milk in the plastic bottle. No form of healthy bread, only toast. Coffee, if you can call it that was awful. Cups and saucers stuck to the tables as they were so sticky and you had to be careful which seat you took as some were completely hollow. The only good point was that it is well situated for hiking and exploring the area but there are other hotels in the near vicinity. Certainly not recommendable especially for the price we paid.

love this place but tonight's food was disappointing. Fish was tasty.but.batter soggy as if it had been cooked well before collection time. chips were also a bit dry and not as fresh as normal. we also ordered a large chicken curry which.again was tasty but a very small portion. Finally the small mushy pea pot was only half full. Never had an issue before and will try again hoping it was a one off

Lovely clean room, very spacious and well equipped, as was the bathroom. Bed was comfortable with lovely quality bedding. Staff were welcoming and this was a truly dog friendly hotel. Should mention the ample breakfast too! We would definitely like to return.

Came into hathersage with my 3 and 5 year old daughters, thought we’d nip in to the little John for some tea. We were greeted with nothing but rudeness and indirect racism. We ordered 2 fish and chips, the fish and peas both cold. When asking for a replacement we were refused with no option to refund. We’re extremely disappointed and hurt by this. For the rest of our short time here we received dirty looks and did not feel welcome at all. The woman on the bar was vile. Save your money, go to the George!

Great food and great service as always. It didnt come up as a takeaway option on the just eat app so I googled them and ordered via just eat from there so something not working correctly on your app!

Comfy, clean rooms that offer all that you need for a relaxing stay after a long day's walk. Service is good however the menu that is on offer for lunch and dinner is nothing to write hone about. It offers the general pub food and portions are good but nothing special. Good range of beers and drinks available. Parking available though you need to register for this inside the hotel. Overall a good hotel for a placd to stay while visiting the area but not the best for a delightful or luxurious stay.

We arrived in Great Ryburgh & thought Fish & Chips...absolutely perfect. Looking at the menu we returned the next night for Caribbean mutton curry....even better. The shame was we had to wait until the following Thursday to have this again. Have a pint in the friendly Blue Boar next door whilst they cook your food. Locals & visitors... This is a little gem. Please support. Lovely food & great value.

Went for a meal with my daughter tonight and we were really impressed. My daughter unfortunately spilt her glass of coke all over the floor as soon as she was given it and the staff were so lovely to her as she was clearly upset. We had scampi and steak pie to eat and both of these meals were great. They were really good sized portions and the chips that came with them were lovely. The added bonus was that they have Blue Moon on draught. Wish we lived closer as we would definitely be back.

This is a lovely friendly bed and breakfast hotel in a perfect position in Hathersage. Our rooms were comfortable but the lack of any housekeeping throughout a 4 night stay was a bit disappointing, The floors could have done with a quick hoover and the bins emptying etc, if nothing else . Our bedrooms were ok, but there was a smell of drains in the bathroom of Friar Tuck which was a bit unpleasant. The kids were in Will Scarlet, which had a nice bathroom but otherwise was small for a twin room and had an uncovered skylight, glad we weren't here in the middle of summer. Breakfast was excellent, great choice and massive amounts of food. With the smoking area at the top of the driveway, the smell of smoke did drift into the dining room though when the outside doors were opened. We ate in the pub each evening and the food was plentiful and well presented and good value for money. The staff was friendly and helpful and overall would recommend the Little John as a convenient place to stay when exploring the Hathersage area.

Absolutely brilliant my friends and I have been visiting Hathersage regularly. The first time we came the pub atmosphere was fantastic and staff were realy helpful and friendly. This time we decided to book a hotel room and stay overnight at the little john. The room and the bathroom were both immaculate and reasonably priced. The staff were amazing and went out of their way to help us when their was a mix up at a different restaurant nearby. Meaning that the other restaurant were unable to cook food for us. The staff at the little John went above and beyond to cook us two pizzas after the kitchen was closed so we were able to have a meal. The pizzas were fantastic and the breakfast the next morning was brilliant. I have been coming for years and will certainly continue to do so I strongly recommend for everyone to come and visit this brilliant pub.A massive thank you to Sunny and Donald the bar staff that made sure we managed to have something to eat.

We stayed in the self-catering cottage and the communication and friendliness was excellent. A brilliant place to stay in the village. Parking was great. Fantastic we could bring our dog. Nice and clean.

Spending a couple of days in Hathersage, went to the Little John for lunch. Great place although extremely quiet but the food was great and good value for the area. I had braised beef, veg and mash whilst hobbies had steak etc. Very good and terribly filling. Good value for morning in a difficult climate

I went there with my boyfriend for dinner (both foreigners and on a holiday in the area). Not only have they mistreated us while taking our Personal details (Covid), but they ignored us for over half an hour by not acknowledging us and serving other costumer around our table. We saw other tables getting their drinks (all locals, white, mostly male and cisgender) and when we tried to get the waitress’s attention we got ignored.I came across the bar to talk to the waitress again so we could place the order (at this point we just wanted to get some food and a pint as it was 20:30 already and were quite hungry) but we were told to wait at the table and she would be with us in a minute.She finally came to the table and took our order (finally! We were happy we were actually having food) but two minutes later she came back telling us that kitchen was closed even though we were never been told the kitchen was about to close Upon arrival.We tried to explain to her that we’ve been waiting for 30 minutes, and that every other restaurant and pub in town was closed, that we didn’t care what they would serve us, we just wanted to eat something. She then replied without making eye contact and a very bad attitude “can’t you see how busy I am? We’re not serving food” and then just walked away from us. Bare in mind that she had just taken a good order from a table across from us 5 minutes ago.This is very sad and concerning that something like this still happens in a contra like the UK. Someone had recommended us this place and to our surprise it was demoralising to go somewhere and be treated like that. Poor management and mediocre service

Wanted to get away for the night and picked Little John from a booking web site for its location. Arrived a little early but allowed to check in from 1pm which we thought was really good and usually 4pm in similar places. Was shown to the room by a nice polite young lady, and it was explained about covid regulations and opening times etc etc. Room was spacious and to a good standard. Great that the dog was made to feel welcome too both in the room and downstairs in the bar. Pricing was good and overall service friendly and efficient. Only gripe was a gentleman that was there when we first arrived and again in the morning wasn’t very welcoming but the rest made up for it. Well worth staying at if I’m the area.

Food was ready just as we arrived, perfectly in time with our given collection time. Fried fish wasn’t the best I’ve ever had, thought it was a little over cooked. Chips were lovely and food was all very professionally presented. Will go again and work our way through the menu!

The closest hotel to Hathersage Pool. Very good cooked breakfast in very generous portions. Rooms should have fans in this hot weather though

Stayed for the weekend and had a fantastic time.we have visited the pub several times but its the first time we stayed. We stayed in the Alan a dale room and it was fantastic. Massive room plenty of space fantastic views from the front window. Nice spacious bathroom. Very modern and clean.nice bedding.all the staff were helpful and friendly especially Donald who couldn't do enough for us.The breakfast was fantastic especially when steph cooked it.I would highly recommend this place.we can't wait to return. No problem with parking. All the local people in bar were very nice and we really enjoyed the food and beer.good selection on local beers.

Stayed for two nights on Valentine’s weekend. Nice touch to begin with: chocs and a card in the room, which was modern, warm and welcoming. Staff make sure you know to sign in to avoid car park fine, think this has been a bone of contention previously. If I was honest, the huge signs are a bit unwelcoming, there must me a better way of liaising with the car park owners to ensure guests are not charged unnecessarily. Very comfortable sleep in Kirklees room, quiet location despite being right in the middle of the village. Can’t fault amenities. Had breakfast, which was quickly served and good, apart from scrambled eggs which seemed to have been sat in a pan until hard. Person after me got freshly made ones, looked really good, so bit pot luck :( but would stay again. Nice place.

The pizzas are huge, the food is excellent, good pool table, light bright pub with loads of beverages to choose from.

Older fellow behind the bar is off hand if not quite rude. On top of that I was fined £100 for using their car park after spending £20 odd. There are much nicer pubs with much more enthusiastic staff with social skills.

A great weekend with friends. Steph(owner) arranged the shoot, which was great fun, which I would highly recommend. The great range of meals were included with an overnight stay. The rooms very clean and comfortable and the staff friendly and accomadating. What a great start to the Christmas break!! I wish we had booked for the whole weekend. A very happy customer

Order collection took 20 minutes longer than detailed on the confirmation. The pizza needed longer in the oven, the base on the vegetarian was not cooked, the Chicken pizza base was only just done. Gutted as this is a lovely little chip shop, first time we have used them and it’s 2 mins down the road. Was hoping for a little more.

Awful owner, extremely rude to customers and her own staff. Food was plentiful but poor quality, made me sick. Tables dirty, staff wiping tables with window cleaner. Rooms are dirty and no WIFI as advertised. Rowdy regulars swearing and making derogatory comments at the top of their voice. Pub is very quite and I’m not surprised. The awful bar man (waistcoat) needs a lesson in personal hygiene and customer service. Will never return. Worst experience I’ve ever had.

Stayed here just over a week ago and were disappointed to be shown our room in an outside building. It was obviously brand new and the shower room impressively modern. However, the bedroom was small and cramped. The bedside shelves were complyely filled by the bedside light.They were so small there was no room to even put a drink on them. We were rudely awaken around 11.00 p.m. by some other guests being shown into the other room in the building - doors were banged and we heard loud voices (this simply wouldn't happen in a Premier Inn!). Our evening meal was reasonably priced and delicious. We also enjoyed the wide selection of fresh fruit, cereals and cooked breakfast.

Found this pub for a cheaper meal as the accomodation we were staying in was a little pricey. A reasonable Menue of pub classics, nothing over the top, large portions ,well served and well cooked. Our party had a selection of meals and all were more than satisfied, the home cooked pie was probably the best i have ever had, succulent meat ,no fat,in a shortcrust pastry case, top and bottom,A PROPPER PIE. Amie the waitress was excellent. so obliging and nothing too much trouble. Well worth a visit for a reasonable meal.

After a nice walk up on to Stanage Edge this is a handy place to eat before catching the train back (it is less than 10 mins walk to the station). Service was quick, the staff were friendly and the food tasty and plentiful. The pub was quiet and pleasant inside. Despite what it says on one web site there is no real cider here. More seriously, the prices on the pub's web site are very misleading (fish and chips was not £8.95 but £14). Had it not been for that I would have given them 5 stars.There was however an excellent carvery starting at £8.95 which was great value so I was quite satisfied that we had made a god choice.

We called for some food on a Sunday. Luckily we got in quite early and missed the mad rush as it got really busy just after. This wouldn't be a massive problem but the bar staff were very slow. Food arrived quickly enough though and was very nice (and large portions). Carvery was also nice. Overall very pleased but if we'd arrived 5 minutes later we'd have walked straight back out due to massive queues. Being busy on a summer Sunday cant be a big surprise surely?

Popped in to the little John inn as it’s advertised as multiple screens showing sky sports and it was the British open final day. We walked in to a basically empty pub that had mtv playing on its multiple screens and politely asked if they would be putting the golf on to which the barman told us he had it on but the locals asked him to switch it off. There was probably 3 people sat at the bar who weren’t watching the tv. We then asked if there was any other pub with sky sports and he bluntly replied don’t know. We got two beers and sat down. It’s a shame he would not put sky sport on as we would have stayed there and ate there. We drank out beers heard ABBA and Britney Spears on mtv and thought it lacked atmosphere and opted to go elsewhere. Customer service skills need refreshing.

Thursdays is 3 for 2 on pizza. Good pizzas too. Staff were quite happy to give the inevitable leftovers in pizza boxes. Also a decent range of good beers. Recommended

Went for a lunch with my family at this dog friendly pub in Hathersage. The food is good and the daily lunch menu is well priced at £4.95. All in all a good venue for anyone with a dog in this delightful village.The service was also fairly quick and very friendly and welcoming.

Found this on just eat and thought would give it a go. Food is decent and great value for money. Next time i will definitely try the Caribbean. We have a great new little takeaway. Oh and the lady who served me was very polite.

We've been to this pub on lots of occasions over the past 10 years. Today the service was very attentive by Blade who was polite and friendly. The food was good and served hot.

We liked the two solid fuel burning stoves, the amusing items on the walls and the old black & white photographs. In addition to the pool table there is a decent table football game, which is not very common these days. The women's toilet needs some attention as there was no door on one of the two cubicles and there did not seem to be regular hourly checks in place as there was no toilet roll in both cubicles, which is not good enough for a hotel.

We only stayed one night but will definitely be back. Staff were really friendly and helpful. The breakfast next morning was really good. Cereals, toast and yogurts etc if you didn't fancy a full breakfast. 10 out 10 to the LJ.

Just had a meal for four with fish and chips from the Little Chippy for the first time and really thrilled we have found this place. Everything was cooked fresh and you could really tell the difference. The fish was exquisite and the side of chips were cooked to perfection. Will definitely be going back soon and look forward to trying the Caribbean food. A real great find, with lovely staff and owners!

Dropped in at the Little John Hotel for a bite to eat after walking along Stannage Edge and arrived just before 3pm. We were offered a reduced choice from the menu with the staff saying they were out of most things, so we both settled for a bacon and cheese, double stacked burger, with chips and coleslaw. When the meal arrived, it was both well presented and plentiful. Unfortunately, it did not taste as good as it looked. It appeared quantity was more important than quality as the burger was quite bland in the taste department and the onion rings were too greasy, which affected the taste of everything that we tasted and drank afterwards.

Food was lovely and had a great selection, the cottage was beautiful and clean,staff were super friendly, would definitely reccomend and will 100% be staying again!

Visited here for a few drinks after a long walk. Service was great and the pub was so welcoming. The log fire was beautiful and the table football kept my children busy. We didn’t eat but saw lots of others eating and the food looked lovely

The Little John aways provides excellent food and generally good service . Our shepherds pie and vegetables was excellent .We live locally and it always provides excellent value for money and very good quality

Lovely evening meal here Liver Bacon and Onions and Pork Chops both with Mash and veg. Well cooked very generous portions and very tasty. Would certainly recommend. Lovely.

Stayed here for the weekend whilst walking in beautiful Peak District. We were given a warm welcome and shown to our room which was large and very warm. Good sized room and bathroom, small but very comfortable bed and all the usual tea making facilities. Really clean throughout and not noisy even though it is on a relatively busy road. There was a drainage smell in the bathroom but was only really noticeable when the room had been closed up all day! Maybe needs looking at! Pub downstairs was equally welcoming and the staff, food and drinks were excellent. Cracking breakfast to set you up for a day on the hill. No complaints at all. Great weekend away.

No problems at all with the delivery driver I had and the time they sent it to me whatsoever. The chips I had were really undercooked and just really needed to be in the fryer for a few minutes more. Chicken was decent, spam fritters again could of been cooked a little longer as well, were edible but just were not fully there to me. Onion rings were decent as well. Don't know if I would order again soon but I am not saying I will never order again.

Really tasty but really long wait

Opening times for Tuesdays say 12-9pm on Internet so we wandered down for nothing because it was closed. Think this needs updating. So then went there for opening at 430 as states on board outside only to find it closed again.!? Went back at 5 pm for the doors just opening. Lady says will be ten mins for fryers to heat. Fryers take a while to heat up and chips to cook so we are very disappointed 3 walks for absolutely nothing because seems they open when they want to. won't be returning. Uldate. Now updating review...... 2 weeks later walking past the chippy after a dog walk with my 10 year old daughter I get a barrage of abuse because of my review on here. Asking my problem and having a go at my husband. Who incidentally didn't know anything about my review. Also telling me I don't know who I'm messing with.!!!!! And the big bloke wouldn't actually speak directly to me but spoke threateningly to my husband as if talking to me. Please be careful about leaving a review because of the repocussions you may get afterwards. Been reported.

This is has very cozy pub atmosphere. We ordered at the bar, chose a window table and the food arrived quickly. Very friendly bartender and patrons. The food is very good and it is nice and clean
