We had enjoyed meals here previously but the quality has plummeted. Two of us ordered the fishcakes which were deep fried with no evidence that they contained any fish at all. Cheap, overcooked fishcakes and undercooked, limp frozen skinny chips. One of the worst meals I have ever been served. We were also seated in the 'function room' which was cold & scruffy.

Went for 1 night stay with my family for my 70th birthday. Allowed to park up early in the car park so we could do a 7 Mile walk .Booked in after the walk.We had booked a table for 8pm as the hotel was very busy.Food was really hot and very nice.Good choice for breakfast. What ever you read about poor reviews forget them. The owner and his staff were very accomodating. The hotel was really lively and most enjoyable. Yes the rooms could be better but they are warm and the beds are comfortable and you only sleep in them mostly after all. Hartington is a great place for walking and with the hotel being central it's a great place to eat, drink and stay.

The 5 stars goes out to the pizza guy and the chef for being accommodating on my vegetarian request. We weren't able to get a table since it was all booked out or order any dining food. They were able to make a salad for me which was perfect. Thank you!

We've eaten at the Charles Cotton Hotel before and had an excellent meal, unfortunately the quality has gone downhill since then. The Pulled Pork Sandwich we were served today was lukewarm shredded meat doused in BBQ sauce and stuck between two thin, limp slices of white bread. After two bites we left the sandwich, ate the garnish and crisps and were down £16.00 for the experience.

This is a very old building, so don't expect all singing all dancing decor. Quite busy and but tidy, if staying, make sure you book your evening meal slot, especially at weekends when they are busy. Good car park at the rear, but make sure you book your car into the car park in the bar.

We called in for a drink and sandwich after a walk with our dogs and granddaughter. It was VERY quiet and now we understand why. No brown bread, no butter on the cheap sliced white bread, thin tasteless ham. Skin on chips were thin frozen chips. Surly barmaid who struggled to leave her phone and serve us. We did complain and one of the sandwiches was deducted from the bill. The best feature was that the dogs got a biscuit.

The pub is welcoming with friendly staff and a good range of interesting beers. The bar interior is cosy with a fireplace ( no fire today, as it was a warm day). We didn't eat, but the food looked good, and we wish we had. This shows the prices as ££ -£££, but I'd say they were fair. Nothing is cheap atm, and at least in a pub you know what you're paying for - ie all veg, chips and salad included upfront.

Absolutely appalling and rude Owner/Manager and Staff. We came after a long enjoyable day/trek of Thors Cave for dinner as this was the only restaurant open late on a Sunday. Our first incident happened with the food, some of us were vegan so they confirmed they’ll be able to make it with Vegan cheese instead, however the dish they served on the table was full of dairy cheese. Secondly, as it was getting late, we (2couples) asked if they had any rooms available to sleep, they had half the hotel empty. So offered us a room but told us we would need to clean & make up own own beds left from the previous night guests. We went to have a look at a room and it was in a completely filthy state, bathroom towels on the floor/bed sheets/duvet from the previous guests, floor dirty and not vacuumed, it was a completely unhygienic. We kindly requested if they could at least make the beds for us as we were paying full price - the staff replied “no, we will provide you with sheets and duvet but you will have to make your own bed up” & the owner replied “my staff are not dogs” . Whilst we were thinking about it the staff also made a comment “you need us, not the other way around” & “don’t waste my time if you’re not going to stay”. As we didn’t have much option that late at night we politely requested for a discount or for them to at least provide us with a clean room. The owner finally replied “I own this building and this is my hotel, I do not want you to stay here”. We were so shocked with the we had been spoken to that we were felt so uncomfortable and unwanted. We immediately checked Expedia for another hotel and luckily found one which was a 20min drive and booked through their website. After reading some of the negative reviews we should have checked before spending money on dinner at this hotel. We would never come again!

Our experience dining here was really poor. We waited 50 minutes for our food to be told they didn’t have any of what we ordered left. The staff were rude and didn’t apologise until we told them we at least deserve an apology for the situation. Fair enough if mistakes are made but the attitude of the staff was really rude - they couldn’t have cared less and no attempts were made to rectify the situation Another customer told us before we placed our order that it would be a long and demoralising wait for food… we should have listened to him

My wife and I came here on a Sunday evening for dinner, we have not stayed here. On a Sunday evening in Hartington this is your only option for dining as the other pub closes early. We had booked a table, and the restaurant was fairly busy but not not packed out. We shared a starter and had two roast beef dinners. Portion size was very good, my wife could not finish her meal as she was full, there was a good variety of vegetables which were cooked to our taste [ not overly cooked to a mush ] and the beef, although well done [ we prefer 'pink'] was tasty and not tough. There are some very negative reviews from last year regarding the food and staff but the staff we encountered were polite and chatty.

Grim - Filthy rooms, deceitful behaviour and awful experience. Avoid. 1. The room was dirty, dusty, mouldy, had cobwebs, a resident spider and a dead wasp all inside one room. Glad we didn’t eat here given the grime in the room, kitchen is sure to be dirty too. 2. The ‘hotel’ also failed to inform guests that a ROCK-BAND plays live every Saturday evening until 1am. No mention on the website, no mention in the hotel. The room was literally shaking with the base and so-called sing-scream-along with the band downstairs. Band stopped at 12.45am, we managed to fall asleep at 1am, for our onward journey tomorrow which saw us up at 6.30am. This was not the quiet, quaint little village retreat that we were hoping for. The hotel has the gall to request guests to turn down the heating and turn off the electric due to costs, but did not have the courtesy to warn guests about the rock band playing all night. 3. Mis-selling - We were mis-sold a superior double room, check out the bathroom screenshots from the website versus the actual bathroom. Evidently, the room was not as pictured which is a deliberate lie to fool people into booking. AVOID!

Would have been a 2 or 3 star review as the room was adequate, though very dated and need of some general upkeep, such as getting rid of the black mould in the shower! Overall only 1 star as we decided to have an evening meal. Partner is gluten intolerant and ordered the gluten free steak. Aside from the steak being so tough she could barely cut it with a steak knife, she then discovered a bit on onion ring (which were not on the gluten free steak) in her chips. I brought this to the attention of the waiter who told us it was fine as they had two friers in the kitchen. But could not explain why there was a piece of gluten containing onion ring on her plate! And to add insult to injury, when I got the bill, they had still charged for her steak and it was only after I pointed this out did they remove it. Overall a throughly disappointing visit and a place we will not be returning to.

Called in on spec on a Sunday lunchtime with the dog and received a nice welcome and an offer to make us a sandwich if we didn't want a full meal. Menu featured Sunday roasts, and other main meals, including several veggie options - the spicy bean pie with chips and peas was tasty, the chickpea curry was described as a bit bland. Prices of around £14 for main courses were about right compared with similar places. Good location at the centre of Hartington with large car park and beer garden at the back.

Bad steak meals for two that cost us “top dollar”. We finally got a price reduction after some hassle with management. However, because we couldn’t actually eat the overcooked and poor quality meat, we still were short-changed as, in order to leave without further argument, we had effectively agreed to pay £24 for two small portions of oven chips.

Appalling service from start to finish. We booked for a weekend away even asking for the same room for sentimentality and booked the restaurant for dinner. When I complained about our table we were given at dinner, and asked to be moved into the main dining room, I was told there were no tables (I could see at least 3). Finally moved to a table to eat dinner in the bar. We were not happy with this but chose to eat there and not make a fuss after already been made to feel a nuisance by the bar lady called Jenny. Called rude and vile names by Jenny who was behind the bar claiming she was the manager . She clearly was not. I asked what happened to customer service and was made to feel belittled and picked upon. My partner intervened whereby she asked us to leave while we were in the middle of our starter. People were staring and we felt embarrassed and mortified. We left and went to our room. Because everywhere was booked up we had no options for dinner anywhere else that night so had to make to with crisps and snacks from the pub across the road. Totally spoilt what was meant to be a romantic weekend away. Would NEVER go there again nor would I recommend it.

I was just about to Leave my feedback when I happened to look at the previews four reviews. I happened to witness the sorry incident last weekend when a lovely couple were subjectively humiliated and hurled abuse at by a so called waitress/bar attendant in hoodie, jeans , trainers and tattoos . It all occurred because the lady appeared to ask to change tables , not an unusual or impossible request. The bar woman (I would not use the term lady) hurled abuse at her and it was clear to see the couple were very uncomfortable. The attitude of this woman was absolutely appalling and had I have been the manager she would have been dismissed on the spot and numerous apologies would have been made to the couple. Instead they were made to leave mid starter and shouted at by this staff member as they exited the restaurant , I can only imagine how they felt as it certainly tainted our evening, and we were not even subject to any abuse. The manner of this woman who I believe called herself Jenny was totally unprofessional and someone like her should never be put in a front of house position. Quite frankly It was utterly disgraceful . As such I will not EVER visit this hotel or restaurant again and I will be sure not to recommend it. I only hope the poor couple in question managed to find somewhere else to eat that evening and will be complaining and demanding some kind of compensation for what they were put through. My wife did go after them, but they’d already left the establishment . Charles Cotton - you should be thoroughly ashamed of your restaurant/bar staff .

Beautiful village, hotel a bit dated but comfy and food average. Had a nice evening meal, looking forward to a few drinks in the cosy bar. Barmaid rang last orders at 5 minutes to 9. When asked why she said she could if it was quiet. There were 7 people in the bar. One girl behind the bar was moaning she was tired, the other said there was a British Legion down the road if we wanted another drink. Spoilt what had been a nice couple’s of days away. Would have thought they would have welcomed extra custom.

I have written my review again as my previous on the hotel listing does not seem to have been published. Anyway, I can not fathom how anyone can rate the restaurant highly. Our experience of Sunday lunch was appalling. The menu states that the roast dinner is freshly cooked with locally sourced produce. That is not what we received at all. An inedible, reheated dinner, with burnt cauliflower cheese, mash potato, one boiled parsnip and Aunt Bessie's style Yorkshire pudding. The whole meal just looked grey, was overcooked, and completely flavourless. When asked about the whereabouts of the roast potatoes, a bowel of deep fried Aunt Bessie's potatoes was brought out. Both my partner and I could not eat our lunch. At 14.99 ahead, I would not expect to be given reheated processed food. A lasagne was bought out and whilst looked okay was stone cold in the middle. Again, I could not eat this and decided to pay for the food that our children had eaten and left. Considering we had complained and returned 3 meals, you would think the manager or chef would want to speak to us, but no, they left it to the waitresses, who were lovely. We were told that the usual chef was not in that day. Well, I suggest that you do not have the one that was in last Sunday back because a chef that can not cook a simple roast dinner should not be in your kitchen. Would have been nice for the manager to have shown her face, too, rather than relying on young waitresses to take the flack. Avoid this place until they sort out the management and chef situation. It's a shame because it is in a beautiful building.

After visiting this pub a few years ago we decided to return for a late Father’s Day meal and our first meal out since having our baby 3 weeks ago, and wow what a disappointment. Staff wearing whatever they picked up out of the wardrobe, flip flops, wellies, if working in a hotel dining area I’d expect if not a uniform, at least to be served by staff dressed like they were at work and not at home. We waited 10 minutes to be served for a drink at the bar before heading to our table, despite their being 2 people in front of us. Staff were clearly overwhelmed and incompetent. To give more detail, it was quite possibly the worst dining experience I have ever had, s complete lack of any interpersonal skills among the staff and customer service non existent. These people should categorically not be working in a public facing job. There were 6 of us and we had a meal missing from our table, despite the waitress reading our order back to us. Waitress came to see if everything was ok and realized a meal was missing, she then walked off with no apology and did not return to the table to update us with what had happened or how long we would have to wait for the missing meal. After ten minutes she returned and stated ‘I’m trying to get the chef to make that for you’, after 15 minutes the manager came and stated the same ‘I’m trying to get the chef to make that for you’ after 20 minutes of waiting we told the waitress to cancel the missing meal as the rest of the table had finished, after 30 minutes the meal then arrived at the table after it had been cancelled. What establishment is it when the staff state they are ‘trying’ to get their chef to do their job? Another meal was ruined, steak supposed to be served medium rare, was that over cooked was the equivalent to chewing a leather boot. One member of our party has a severe gluten allergy and ordered a gluten free chicken curry and another member of our party ordered a standard gluten free curry, when the curry came out I asked if that was the gluten free one to which the waiter said ‘what is gluten free?’ Waitress serving our meals stated numerous times that she ‘couldn’t be arsed’, ‘I can’t be bothered’, my partner went outside and the waitress was outside and she stated to him she wasn’t going back inside and that she was hiding from the tables. She then asked my partner if he wanted to go into the kitchen to speak to the chef regarding his missing meal as when she had gone in the chef had called her and the manager ‘f*cking stupid’. 1. not a customers job to speak to the chef, that is the staffs job to query where a tables food is, 2. Why on earth you would relay altercations between staff to a customer I will never understand. We over heard the manager arguing with another customer at the bar when they were trying to order a meal, the manager turned to them and stated she wasn’t going to serve them any food or drink. When we queried our bill and explained all of our issues from the missed meals, complete lack of customer service, over cooked food etc, we were met with a waitress who looked down at her notepad the whole time, didn’t even look interested with what we were saying - she clearly wasn’t (the same waitress who told us earlier that she ‘couldn’t be arsed’), she then walked away from the table without saying anything to us. Her manager then came to the table and had the same uninterested, argumentative attitude, shouting at us that we had made her waitress cry, when my partner stated he would not be paying the bill, that we would pay half of it, she then walked away from the table. Another member of our party then went to the toilet and on his walk back through the bar to return to the table was told ‘don’t bother leaving we have called the police’ whilst our whole party were all still sat in the dining room, thinking the manager was rectifying our bill and returning to the table!!!! At this point we then sat outside waiting for the police to arrive and when attempting to speak to the manager to attempt to rectify the situation she completely ignored us. Not hard to see why the staff have the cannot be arsed attitude when the manager has the exact same attitude. To conclude, I would not go back here if it was the last place on earth and would highly recommend that you do NOT spend your hard earned money here. To all the staff at this shoddy establishment I recommend selling up and getting a different job that requires never speaking to a customer because you all have no clue how to work in the service industry. Your attitude and conduct towards us as customers was disgusting, running your establishment how you are you’ll be closed in a matter of months and it’s nothing less than what you deserve.

Visited here on Sat 12th Sept for lunch. Waited quite a while for food but put slower service down to social distancing. We ordered Steak Pie with chips and veg. When it arrived it looked lovely but when we tried the Pie it was frozen in the middle... not just cold, it hadn’t defrosted. We sent it back. The manager asked us did we want another one but we asked for a refund. She wasn’t very apologetic. Ended up driving to Buxton for food as other local places were closed. Highly annoying.

It’s the second time we have stayed at this hotel and we like it for its individuality and location and previously for the ambience and good food in the restaurant. Not this time though the breakfast food was as good as ever but the evening meal was a big disappointment on both nights. It appeared that all the home made fresh choices had been replaced with frozen food from Iceland. We will be back but not until there is a dinner menu that gives you the credit you deserve. Also could someone please update your website.

Only decent things about this place is the restaurant staff and food. Stay away! Dirty old rooms that you wouldn’t stay in through choice. Booked as a birthday celebrations for a friend. Turned into a nightmare as their room was worse than ours and had blood on the door and floor which the manager refused to acknowledge. On a plus side pub across the road is lovely. Feel sorry for hardworking staff battling to deliver a good service in a hovel.

We visited the restaurant whilst staying at the hotel on a Saturday night. The atmosphere is cosy and welcoming with a lovely little bar where we enjoyed a drink first. All the staff we friendly and welcoming. The food is all home made and from locally sourced produce and was absolutely delicious. Can not recommend this place strongly enough. Amazing!

Stayed in Hartington a couple of years ago and wanted to eat at The Charles Cotton restaurant but didn't manage to fit it in so, upon our return last week, we made sure we booked in for the Wednesday night 'steak night' and what a great meal it was!! For 2 x steaks and a bottle of wine we thought the steak would have been a flat iron steak and a cheap bottle of plonk....how wrong could we have been! The steak was a proper chunk of meat that was cooked to perfection and melted in your mouth. The wine was a decent bottle and thoroughly enjoyed with the meal. Great portion sizes. Ellie and Chris were a credit to the establishment and were very friendly, helpful and did a great job to say the restaurant was extremely busy and they were the only 2 staff on. Would definitely recommend (in fact, I already have) and would most definitely return when next in Hartington.

We couldn't think of anything negative about our dining experience here, if we wanted to.Lovely steak, superb pasta, nice sticky pudding, good service. Water on the table, cosy restaurant. Some other guests had a bit of a misunderstanding with their order but that problem was solved satisfactorily for both parties within a minute.Okay then, two negs.1. We booked our table the day before. Unfortunately they didn't tell us then that the tomahawk steak was only on pre-order. If only we had known.2. Website menu is not exactly the same as menu in the restaurant. Shame. I was looking forward to having lamb but unfortunately they didn't have that.Would we go again? We went twice and yes, we would go again.

Just returned from staying for a couple of days to celebrate our anniversary, quite disappointed. We paid extra for kingsize accommodation, we were told this was the only available room! if that was kingsize I would hate to see a smaller room! The area for hanging clothes was a recess in the wall with a curtain across and had just 4 hangers. The room was very shabby, very much in need of a refurb. The maid came to service the room at 3.35pm on the second day, a bit too late as we had by that time returned to the hotel and were resting. On the positive side the restaurant served very good evening meals on both of the evenings, unfortunately let down by the wait for food which was extremely long, even more so on the second evening as the waitress or kitchen got one of our meal choices wrong and so we had to wait even longer. Breakfast was very much a standard English, quicker service and quite tasty too. We would not bother returning, a real shame because we were looking forward to our mini break.

I visited this pub with my partner and my 6 month old little girl. The service was great as they managed to fit us in on a busy night when we didnt book. The guy went out of his way to talk to us about our stay in the village and the food was great. Lovely chilled out atmosphere. Would definitely recommend.

Very unhelpful, with the attitude they couldn’t care less. This a pub that offers gluten free meals, but the chips on said meals don’t have separate fryer so are not gluten free as there is cross contamination from other foods being cooked in the same fryer. And despite informing them of my condition they would not even substitute the chips for new potatoes or anything (listed with other meals on their menu)? “That’s how it is” was the waitress’ answer after whispering to a manager right in front of us. Yeah... cancel our table thank you.If you are just on a gluten free diet by choice then you’ll be ok, but if you suffer from Coeliac Disease, avoid.

We called in for lunch. There was a good selection of beers - the cellar man was helpful and amusing. The prawn cocktails were in a very strange sauce which made them inedible. They were sent back and replaced with fish goujon sandwiches. The goujons were almost all batter and the bread was covered in yet again a strange sauce. The turkey and cranberry sandwich was completely swamped in cranberry sauce. The bowl of chips were excellent and the service was good. We expected better food from a famous old inn.

Just returned from a 1night stay at this hotel. Booked a groupon deal. The pictures of the rooms on groupon are certainly different from the one we actually stayed in. We stayed in room 6 which overlooks the main road. It is definitely tired and in need of some updating. The carpet on the stairs leading up to the room is filthy. The actual room is small , no room for a chair. That doesn't worry me for a 1 night stay but others might find it a problem. The door handle was quite loose and I feared it may drop off. The fittings on the bedside lamps were loose which meant that we used the switch on the wall to operate. My wife gave up on trying to have a shower as the mixer kept switching from shower to bath and the water temperature kept switching from hot to cold. The plug hole in the sink is brown and the chain on the plug is broken. There is also black marks on some of the grouting around the bath. On the plus side we did have sandwiches at lunch time when we arrived and they were fine. Also our evening meal was OK also. We did book a time for the restaurant when booking the room. Can't comment on the cooked breakfast as we had cereals and a sausage sandwich. Other guests found some of the bread mouldy. The waitress removed some of the bread but another couple found some more mouldy. Why the bread wasn't removed and fresh brought out is beyond me. Looking at reviews for this hotel , the better ones appear to be from walkers stopping by for a drink or food. The poor ones appear to be from guests staying here. We could not recommend this hotel on our actual findings and were glad it was only a one night stay.

Stayed for three nights, room adequate, nicely decorated, good size bed and room to walk around in, very good shower room with large (170cm) shower. Breakfast very good but not so dinner in the evening, as a party of four not one of us had a meal that one could call satisfying, plenty of content but no flavour, very disappointing. B&B; good but eat out for main meals

A warm, friendly pub with well appointed rooms, which are tastefully furnished. Our meals were well presented and extremely enjoyable. It's a shame that the chef still decided to include, when asked not to, certain items from the menu choice. The service was really slow, with our dessert arriving 35 minutes after we ordered .. lemon meringue - key lime pie on the menu. Our dessert was returned! The chef appeared at one point with a number of visible rips across his shirt .. which doesn't seem very professional. It is beautiful venue, which in my opinion, is let down by poor management.

Always a real pleasure to be back in Winster and partake of the hospitality of Old Bowling Green. Charming, relaxing and traditional with welcoming staff and very dog friendly. We enjoyed tasty basket meals (served Friday/Saturday), drinks and chit-chat. A lovely pub in a lovely village.

Very disappointing. We’ve visited here many times over past 10 years. Booked for two nights as we know how good it is and how booked up it gets. Really surprised to walk in to see mostly empty tables, one member of staff on shift trying to do everything and pub generally unclean. Tables not cleared, no welcome despite our booking - just told to sit wherever. There was an issue at another table which didn’t appear to be handled well, all seemed very tense and unprofessional. Quality of food has declined and portions small to average. Such a shame, needless to say we’ve cancelled our second booking and will head to the wheatsheaf where it’s a quality experience all around
