Always a real pleasure to be back in Winster and partake of the hospitality of Old Bowling Green. Charming, relaxing and traditional with welcoming staff and very dog friendly. We enjoyed tasty basket meals (served Friday/Saturday), drinks and chit-chat. A lovely pub in a lovely village.

We were delighted to be able to order a Saturday evening takeaway meal on another return trip to Winster. The quality of the food is as good as ever, tasty and served piping hot. We enjoyed a couple of drinks in the bar chatting to people before we collected our food and it’s great to see the pub still so cheerful and popular. Thank you to David and Marilyn. See you next time!

Another stay in our favourite village Winster so we pre-booked a takeaway Sunday lunch which was easy to collect and delicious. Piping hot pork roasts followed by syrup syrup sponge and custard. The pub itself is a lovely cosy place to stop by for a drink. David and Marilyn are great hosts and always offer a friendly welcome. Takeaway meals only and open for drinks only on on certain days so check website. We will be back!

Rented a house in Winster for the weekend and by having a quick look through the guestbook, the Old Bowling Green was highly recommended! We went for a drink the first evening and were greeted by the loveliest staff; the bar worker at the time was super chatty and friendly and we’re gutted we can’t remember her name. We ended up ordering takeout for the following evening, and it was absolutely delicious (the best chips I’ve genuinely ever eaten). Prices were incredible given the quality. Would completely recommend to anyone visiting the area, 5/5 stars.

We stayed for one night in September. Bradwell is a good base for a walk which helped us work up a healthy appetite. The room was clean and equipped with everything we needed and the only issue was that the wi-fi did not reach the room. The food in the evening and at breakfast the following morning was excellent and the staff were friendly and helpful.

In these challenging times of isolation it's great to have a treat or two. To celebrate Mothers Day we sat down to a wonderful Sunday Roast, coutesy of the Old Bowling Green washed down with a few pints of Moonshine. But this was on our table, in our dining room in front of our blazing fire. And it was great. Well presented on proper plates with a separate pot of gravy. The Yorkshire pudding was fantastic. Thank you David and the team for creating this service which will surely become something else to celebrate in this amazing village.

We, my wife and I and an 85 year old lady enjoyed an excellent 3 course meal. There was a lot of choice and the staff asked if our guest wanted a smaller portion after hearing her say she was worried about lots of vegetables. We said No (she just wanted to make sure she gets lots of meat!) and she finished the lot. The nice thing was that they paid attention to our discussion. This was Sunday lunch and we had the roast. Good meat, no gristle and the right amount of fat. The puddings were large but very light and my ginger sponge was to die for! The pub was well set up with tables and in a small Derbyshire village there was plenty of parking - usually a problem.

After several visits, this pub cannot be faulted. There is a warm (literal and metaphorical) welcome and one is not rushed. After ordering, there is sufficient time to enjoy a drink before the meal is served by local teenagers who are extremely polite and efficient. The beef roast dinner was delicious as usual, as was the dessert. It has to be one of the best Sunday lunches around - thank you.

A lively village pub near to the cottage we had booked for a weeks holiday, not open very often but we went there for a meal on our last night. Not an expansive menu but good variety and the food we ordered was lovely and good portions of quality product. The puddings were the star of the show, we dont normally bother but on a cold wet night they certainly hit the spot.

Well it`s been 14 months since our last visit to the Old Bowling Green (way too long) and you would think it was 14 mins, lovely welcome from the locals who we have got to know over the years, Marilyn and David are still working miracles there, serving great food and good beer with a constant smile. We all had scrummy food on both of our visits whilst staying in the village for a week. The pie was home made and full of meat, the beetroot and aubergine curry was to die for, very clever combination, we also had duck which melted in one`s mouth, cross section of meals served which should please everyone, this is the sort of pub my wife and i have always dreamed of living by, need to start saving our pennies to move to Winster when we retire, great pub and community shop as well.

What a find this pub was! We booked Sunday lunch (30 December 2018) and I’m so glad they were not doing the normal Roasts (which, by all accounts, are very good) as instead I chose Steak and Kidney Pie. So very glad I did. Not a round Pie but a proper slice of truly home made pie. Washed down with a couple of great pints of Bradfield Farmers Ale. A perfect combination. Followed by an equally good homemade Treacle Tart. Oh and my wife loved her meal, too: prawn starter, excellent home made Cumberland sausages and mash and glasses of Merlot. We were made very welcome even with our dirty wellies. A “proper” pub. A rare find.

Been here a couple of times and really like the atmosphere. This is a pub that locals come and drink in, but it has a seating area for those wanting to eat. And unlike at least one other review I find it a friendly pub. Good local beer selection, I had a lovely Golden ale from Aldwark Artisan Ales brewery, approximately 7 miles away. Food was really hearty and proper pub food of very good quality. The pies are made by the owner and look amazing. My wife had the cheese and onion pie with home made pastry. She loved it. I had fish and chips and loved it. And if you like old fashioned puddings with custard save some space! I had Golden Syrup sponge and custard. So good. Noticed another complaint about the price. Well all I can say is I had three course + 3 pints + a whisky and paid £30. I find that pretty amazing value for money. Oh and portion sizes are really generous too. See you again next year sometime!

Unexpected free day on Sunday and new car to test out so I thought I would meander South East through Derbyshire a route I hadn't taken for some many years. Buxton was my initial destination, a disappointing one it turned out to be. Seemingly encased in gloom, a multitude of charity shop occupying the pedestrianised main street, interspersed with outdoor activity shops vying for custom with ever increasing discount offers and, at the head of it, the historic Crescent which, I seem to remember, was being restored when I last visited and still is. Perhaps its EU grant has been suspended pending Brexit?

Then we asked to book a table for food on the next night (a Thursday evening) - we thought our party of 10 people would be welcome, even if split up into two tables of five, only to be told "no" but if we'd been 'locals' then the landlady might have been happy to take us. This was our Last meal in the Peak District before going back to Kent. We had heard good things about this place. We booked a table as it was recommended. The decore in side was ok I was expecting it to be more in keeping with the 1472 age. Food when ordered arrived promptly, however it did not have that wow factor as I expected. Garlic mushrooms were not homemade but frozen ones. I had white bait again the same as I have had elsewhere. The steak was very good again nothing to write about. We would often take a photo of our meal to show others. Sorry not on this occasion. There was a limited menu. The miners standard up the road meal we had during the week was in my opinion much better.

Having stayed in the village of Winster in the Peak District for a short holiday, a visit to this pub in the heart of the village was inevitable, however to the person who is used to conformity, the opening hours of this establishment do not comply to the norm. Having finally gotten round to writing this review, I can confirm that this pub is hands down one of the best pubs I've encountered. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what features stand out the most, as even with the removal of a few of them, it would still be pretty good! Excellent real ales on tap, as well as some craft beers and ciders in bottles. Excellent food represents exceptional value and my son especially enjoys the ridiculously generous sumptuous puddings! The olde worlde nature of the place itself is charming and is matched by the always warm welcome you receive from staff and locals alike. Nothing is too much trouble and the overriding impression you come away with is that they genuinely care a great deal about the experience of their customers - Sadly a rare commodity nowadays in my experience. Would strongly recommend to anyone but do book ahead as it is unsurprisingly popular. Enjoy!

A much improved Sunday lunchtime roast, having been a few times and not been overly impressed. This time the food was very good, especially for the price.Relaxed atmosphere as always and the beer is excellent here too. Well worth a visit, for great value pub fayre.

The pub was cosy and pleasant, with a laid back atmosphere. We enjoyed the food and the service was very good. Portion sizes could have been a little more generous.

We were a party of 6 including 3 children--and visited the Pub 3 times for dinner--so we really enjoyed it. The service was very friendly; the menu adequate for us, the food fine, and the atmosphere great. Best to book, as it seems to be a very popular place--but not open for dinner Sunday to Wednesday.

We saved this pub for our last visit during our week in the Peak District hoping it would be the highlight although the bar had been set high by those we had already visited which had all impressed us.Initial impressions were favourable - warm welcome, four real ales from micros, dog friendly, multi roomed,Camra discount.Soup starters fine,so far so good. Then the mains. My steak and kidney pie had hard pastry, meagre chewy filling and an overpowering thick, rich gravy. The mash was lovely but disappointingly I didnt enjoy the pie.My wife is an afficianado of liver and onions and had expected a slice of liver,a rasher of bacon and some onions but the dish came as mixed up mishmass of all three together and she also didnt enjoy it.So what started off so well ended in something of a let down and far from being the highlight we were hopeing for,it turned out to be least enjoyable meal of the week. The pub was great, the beer and food reasonably priced. We are certainly not picky eaters and having read the previous reviews perhaps we were just unlucky as I so wanted to love this pub.

If you are looking for good food for vegetarians in Winster, then it is well worth booking in advance here. Because it is good, they are often fully booked.Looking forwards to returning here again.

Wonderful village pub, good atmosphere with very nice decor. We went once for a drink, then again for a meal. Service and food very, with all the pub grub classics. Opening hours are a bit quirky....closed Monday and Tuesday and only open for food from Thursday. The other pub just outside the village, the Miners Standard, no doubt benefits from this.

We have earen out 3 times over the past week and this was by far the best meal and service. There is a good selection both on the menu and the specials board. The puddings were great.

We visited the Old Bowling Green on recommendation from our host as we stayed locally on Friday night. What a lovely pub! The fire was welcoming and atmosphere super. However! We chose from the Specials menu: my husband filet steak and I fish and chips. The chips, peas, salad etc were super but my husband's steak resembled a burger in size and height.. It was too thin to have been served medium rare as requested, and was medium at best. It was tiny ! My fish was tasteless: think Birds Eye. Such a shame. We decided not to stay for dessert. The lady behind the bar had nothing to say as we paid, no 'did you enjoy your meal', 'do call again', though she was very chatty with her friends at the bar.. If she had asked, we would have given an honest opinion, but chose not to spoil our evening by complaining. The waitress was really lovely though..

I have been to this pub many times over the years, holding policing meetings and the like and the owners were always very nice and helpful I didn't realise they were still there until we went as a group of 7 for Sunday lunch. My wife and I were staying in the village of Winster and visited the pub every day (other than Monday and Tuesday as it's closed) we were here twice. The pub had a good selection of beers to choose from. We had an enjoyable Sunday lunch (one Lamb one Pork) which was cooked perfectly and reasonably priced. We also ate here on 9th March I had Lasagne which I can honestly say was one of the best lasagnes I have ever had while my wife had steak pie which she loved and the meat was very tender. It was a wonderful example of home cooked food. The pub had a wonderful buzzy atmosphere and the staff couldn't have been friendlier, more welcoming or helpful. Overall it was a great pub we would happily visit again next time we are on holiday in the peaks.

Spent a few days staying in a cottage in Winster Thur-Fri, this pub is only open in the evening Wed-Sun however only serves food Thur-Sun. As Thursday was our last night in the village we decided to go and spend our last evening sampling the local beer and food. So first impressions of the pub were nice, we were greeted as we entered and the Famers Ale was very pleasant. We arrived at 6:30 ordered our beer then food by about 6:45. We ordered one appetizer to share and then 3 entries courses, we received our starter (Brie wedges with sauce) about 7:40. We then finally received our mains approximately 8:20 (Chicken breast with stilton sauce, chips and peas - Boiled plain chicken breast with an insipid cheese sauce, frozen chips and peas) (Scampi Chips and Peas - the scampi batter had the texture of thick batter normally associated to chicken sweet and sour ,again frozen chips and peas) (Thai Green curry and rice, looks alone put us of this one, the sauce looked split and had a strange taste) When we were asked how the meal was, we said we were not impressed and asked the chef to taste the curry. The waitress apologized for the wait and that we were not satisfied. However then went off to the kitchen, we did not receive any other info from the kitchen. We reluctantly paid our check and left feeling very disappointed with the indifference and lack of feedback from the staff. Now like any review this is based on our single visit to this establishment so everyone can have an off day, however I think we went when the chef was off on holiday. Considering the location I would imagine this place makes its living off the passing trade of the tourist..us. Like I said in the title and nice local pub with great beer, however from our experience I would not recommend the food at all.

Very disappointing. We’ve visited here many times over past 10 years. Booked for two nights as we know how good it is and how booked up it gets. Really surprised to walk in to see mostly empty tables, one member of staff on shift trying to do everything and pub generally unclean. Tables not cleared, no welcome despite our booking - just told to sit wherever. There was an issue at another table which didn’t appear to be handled well, all seemed very tense and unprofessional. Quality of food has declined and portions small to average. Such a shame, needless to say we’ve cancelled our second booking and will head to the wheatsheaf where it’s a quality experience all around

Chips were hot held for too long prior to serving resulting in mushy chips, fish had soggy batter and was not pleasant. Pie was overdone and microwaved resulting in inedible pie. Service from one member of staff was great however the other staff were eating food whilst serving and talking about personal matters. Needs work and improvement, constructive criticism. I am a chef and was disappointed.

We had enjoyed meals here previously but the quality has plummeted. Two of us ordered the fishcakes which were deep fried with no evidence that they contained any fish at all. Cheap, overcooked fishcakes and undercooked, limp frozen skinny chips. One of the worst meals I have ever been served. We were also seated in the 'function room' which was cold & scruffy.

Just been for Sunday lunch and can highly recommend! A warm welcome and great service. Had roast lamb which was hot and delicious with fresh mint sauce and sea bass with mojo sauce roasted new potatoes, rocket, spinach and a side of veg, stunning and beautifully baked. One of the nicest dishes I've ever had, a reminder of holidays abroad, fresh, hot and tasteful. Accompanied by a recommeded crisp dry cider... thank you and see you again very soon xx
