Matlock Fish Bar in Derbyshire Dales

A lovely old fashioned chippy that was a real find for a hungry family. Service with a smile although they were rushed off their feet, very quick service and delicious food made for a great pit-stop. Highly recommended and one we'll revisit.

A proper chippy. Very busy, but service was with a smile and quick and the food was delicious. There's something for everyone here with a nice atmosphere and really good prices. We'll eat here again any day. An asset to Matlock, they should be proud of themselves.

Busy lunchtime service with the Xmas market on in Matlock. Chilly day so we wanted to eat in. As we queued a table became free. In the blink of an eye Sky had the table cleared and 4 fresh as fresh can be portions of mini fish, chips and mushy peas sorted. Food was fresh, hot, top class and well priced. Service from Sky was excellent. Thoroughly enjoyed our lunch and friendly service topped it off.

Just had the worst fish and chips ever. Fish dry, batter at least double fried, chips like warm. Almost £25 for two. AVOID.

Definitely value for money! Eating area sparkly clean and staff extra friendly. Food was ready within a few minutes and was very tasty. Would definitely come again.

Chips were hot held for too long prior to serving resulting in mushy chips, fish had soggy batter and was not pleasant. Pie was overdone and microwaved resulting in inedible pie. Service from one member of staff was great however the other staff were eating food whilst serving and talking about personal matters. Needs work and improvement, constructive criticism. I am a chef and was disappointed.

Dropped in mid afternoon on a weekday. We shared a pie and chips! Often this doesn’t go down well, but it was absolutely fine and we were given two plates etc without quibble. Service was great. Food was excellent and a good price. We will return 👍😄 Thank you Matlock fish bar.

Excellent fish and chips, cooked fresh to order. Crispy and delicious. Attentive service that went over and above what you might expect in a chippy.

The outside of the resturant looks inviting very clean. Staff friendly ,,But the food quite disappointing. We order pie and chips with mushy peas, the pie was warmed up leftvover ,the mushy peas, were stale and slightly warm ,the chips were warmed up leftovers. It was uneatable we left our food ,it seemed as thought to complain would not change anything. We will definitly not go there again

Awful racist employee. Worst customer service I've ever experienced. - I went in with my Asian date (I look white). We said hi, and the guy serving looked up and was immediately rude answering "wait till I've finished what I'm doing." And I thought ok this guy is having a bad day. Then my date asks if they take card (as lots of places in Matlock don't) and the guy points to a sign and says "read that, it says it there" pointing to a sign. He then moved over to the counter so my date started to order, and again the guy was rude saying "just wait, will you." I'd had enough by that point so we left without ordering. Never going there again and telling the everyone not to go there either!

Oily fish and chips, overpriced. Everything costs extra.

I am from Lancashire and have lived this side of The Pennines for 28 years .First time on this side I’ve found a chippy that sells steak and kidney pudding which I love . More chippy’s should take note as they are missing a trick ! It was full of both steak and kidney not the small amounts you get in the ones you can buy at supermarkets . It tasted beautiful . Full marks and nice staff !

Just been to Matlock Fish Bar lovely fish and chips. Excellent friendly service. Had a problem with family jumping the queue for a table before being served but staff sorted this out with no fuss.

The staff were really friendly and helpful. The chips were lovely, light and crispy and weren’t greasy. The sausages were tasty and the fish was fresh. The curry sauce was also really tasty. We had a lovely dinner and service was quick.

This is the only fish and chip shop I know in Matlock. We have used this several times. The staff are friendly and efficient. The prices are high and the portions small. The takeaway was not good the chips were oily and not at all crisp. The fish was small, grey and greasy again. There is better value and quality fish and chips to be had in Bakewell (surprisingly).

Visiting Matlock today, we called at the fish Bar for lunch .£20 down the drain, horrible chips grey fish and the curry sauce I asked for was poured over everything. The lady who served us was pleasant enough. The tray we were given from behind the counter was dirty. We left almost everything and went home hungry. Will never go again.

My husband ordered fish & chips to takeaway. Absolutely awful , the fish had an ammonia smell & metallic taste, was a grey pink ..... He returned to the premises and was offered a full new meal, unfortunately so put off by our terrier throwing up her tiny piece of fish only a couple of chips eaten , these were ok. Definitely will avoid next time in Matlock

Came here late in the day on Sunday June 2024. Food was cooked well and tasted good. I had cod and chips and my daughter had chicken strips. The cod wasn't the biggest I've ever seen but for the price was OK. Around a 20min walk from the Matlock Premier Inn. I would visit again.

Called in for mini fish and chips and a Yorkshire fish cake take away as we sat down the fish cake was burnt on the other side not noticed until my wife turned it over.should have taken it back tbh as it was £7.50

It's not bad, the chips and mixes are well cooked and nice, good amount, but it's certainly not a cheap bite. The sausages aren't the finest. Guy behind the counter is not too welcoming.

Problem going in huge queue that does not separate into takeaway or eat in. Food was lukewarm. Had seen a huge queue assumed food would be hot. I would try elsewhere. Very disappointed

2nd time here, had pie and chips first time and was so so. 2nd time got fish and chips with peas. They put peas all over everything and it was soggy. Didn’t eat the fish as it smelt bad and was rubbery. Everything here costs extra and it is very bland interior and even blander quality. If you cant reach fried food level of food then just give up altogether. I won’t be going here again. I would recommend any of the numerous places up the road in matlock bath instead or even just go hungry rather than be disappointed by this place.

We travel a long way for fish and chips here. Last night the haddock was really fresh and the batter perfect. As was the battered sausage. Excellent chunky and plentiful chips. Huge portions. Very friendly and helpful staff.

Exceptional good value. Small fish chips and peas only £7.70 to eat in! Portion was a good size for the average appetite. Formica tables. No frills but very good value for money. They also do gluten free. I would recommend.

Had the fish chips and peas special and at £7.50 not cheap chips we're good peas nice but the small fish was like a fish finger it's was tiny got halfway thru the fish and had to leave the rest as it didn't seemed to be fully cooked as it was hard and not white and flakey lie you'd expect from fish. So won't be in a rush to return on my next visit to matlock.

I popped into this fish and chip ship while passing through Matlock and do not regret it. They had amazing portions with good prices and the food was hot and yummy and the batter on the fish was crispy and delicious. The chips were also very fulfilling. I also got mushy peas which were amazing. This was way better than any other fish and chip shop I've been to. There were a bunch of rowdy children in the shopwhen I entered but the staff handled them brilliantly which made it go from a chaotic and loud environment to a peaceful environment where you could eat. 10/10 recommend

Quick and easy service. Fresh delicious chips. Liked that you could add your own salt and vinegar. Paid on card. 30p for ketchup.

Went in here today and food was really poor. No cod, so ordered haddock, and it was dripping in fat. The mushy peas tasted sour and spoilt the meal even more as they totally covered the little fish. £40 for 2 Fish and Chips and a kids fish and chips, plus two teas and a small fruit shoot.Canteen style seating. I wouldn't minded any of that if the food was nice,but it was really poor.

CASH CASH CASH Real good to see small business getting together and keeping cash alive, my food was cooked fresh and was ready prompt, we had 2 mini fish ans chips with peas in pots, there was plenty for us and our infant daughter. The counter was very clean and other customers seemed to be getting served efficiently, the staff clearly know what they’re doing as we attended on a very busy Wednesday last week and they were calm and collective. Will definitely return and will tell more people to use CASH !!!

Busy place but there were plenty of staff who coped like a well oiled team so no long wait. I like busy chippies 'cos everything is hot and tastes just right. Good serving of chips and the steak pudding was hot and flavorsome with a good dousing of thick gravy. I chose to eat out as the weather was nice, and Matlock park is just a swallows flight away. Only had one cheeky pigeon arrived but he got nowt'

Massive portions! Ordered a small chips and mushy peas- it was more than enough for two people. Very tasty mushy peas and freshly cooked chips (not like the reheated ones you get in some places!) would definitely return if back in the area. Good veggie options.. quite liked the sound of battered halloumi too!

Had cod chips and peas x2 2 bottles of cola..spent £25.80 Fish smelled of ammonia..sure sign of being off. Took it back..he said l had eaten it..l ate the chips and peas... Was not going to bother taking them back...but if no one...says anything..then someone might get ill. Anyway took the fish back of the chip shop see what can be done tomorrow.."….. So you left a comment after my review…shame it’s not correct 1. l did not eat most of it, l brought back the fish, l ate the chips and peas. 2. (not happy about waiting,) where ever l go l have to wait, if l want a large cod, l wait all the time, So you are insinuating that l was annoyed, having to wait, another lie, because l do this at most chip shops. 3. I was not complaining about the price, l was stating the price to show l have been too your shop, And purchased the food, And that l was not leaving a fake review. After visiting your premises regularly, over 14 years, l would not leave you a review to do you harm, In all this time l have had no complaints with your food, And you’re prices are ok, l have just paid £9.30 for just a cod in Amble,Morpeth (Northumberland) 4. I never try to get anything for nothing, so another lie. We travelled up to Gullivers weekend just gone and came here to get a takeaway for dinner, can I say that the food was freshly made, my son and husband wanted a thinner batter on their fish and the restaurant was understanding enough to accommodate! My husband and I reheated our food ( fish, chips and jumbo sausage) it still tasted fresh! We then returned the next morning for breakfast cobs and again they were really fresh and tasty! Portion size for both meals was spot on! Service was spot on! Will return when we come to visit again! Keep up the great work guys! :)

The aroma coming out was very tempting so we decided to go in. There was a steady stream of customers for both takeaway and sitting in. The headline was £6.70 for a small fish and chips, which to be fair is adequate for most people. I went to the counter and ordered and the proprietor advised that he had only one large fish available and asked if I wanted that and one small. Mistake number one. I expected the large to be a couple of pounds extra, it works out at almost double the cost! In total with a cup of tea and a canned soft drink, the bill was £24.30. OK my fault for not checking. The quantity was plenty, as I said the small would have been perfectly adequate. The quality though, did not match the price The chips were overcooked and the batter on the fish was a bit meh... As we were eating I looke around and noticed the state of the place. There was food all over the floor and on tables. OK they were busy but cleanliness in an eating establishment is essential. End of the day it wasn't the worst fish & chips but it was far from the best and we won't be hurrying back....

Really nice chips, and I’m trying to be constructive, the potion sizes really need to be bigger. I had a large chips to takeaway and I would say it was barely a regular. Thanks. Update nov 2022. Stopped in here one evening whilst on holiday in the area. We ordered fish and chips and fishcake and chips with curry sauce to eat in. Member of staff was friendly. Food was lovely, freshly cooked and hot. Nice that they do a smaller portion of fish and chips which was actually still a good size meal. Would recommend.

Went before football and was served quickly. The lads serving were efficient and friendly and the chips were really good. Was tempted to go after football to.

Avoid this place at all costs!.. Not only was the fish reheated at 11.45am..before being handed it I'd complained the vinegar the assistant had put on my fish was whey too much...she not only rolled her eyes at me..she then went on to embarrass me by speaking to the chef saying "she won't except it" .. He said give her another...she then tried putting the same fish onto my next order, that I then refused..she rolled her eyes and tutted again! Then to my surprise she asked the chef if he wanted to refry it..he said yes!..after paying 17.50 for these 2 meals we went outside only to find it was hard..obviously recooked and stale fish. The customer service is terrible. ..we put the whole lot in the bin and went down the road for a salad sandwich!.. such a shame because years ago this chippy was great. ..Never again!.. the worst I've ever experienced!!

Myself and my daughter called in yesterday, the staff were very friendly, the food was very good, was quite pricey but what isn't these days, way better service than the fish and chip shop we visited down the road a couple of months back, I would go again to this fish & Chip shop.

Went there at 19:40 on Saturday evening (bearing in mind it advertises that it closes at 20:00) and was told they weren't serving. When it says closes at 20:00 that is the time the owner goes home having cleared away (we saw him pull the shutters down at 19:58). I would guess hoping for anything after 19:00 was on the optimistic side. They really should change their advertised closing time to something more truthful.

Called early lunchtime with grandson to eat in. Surprised that chips seemed like they had stood for ages and were barely warm. This was at 11.50 am so you would expect them to have been cooked fresh. The "Yorkshire" fish cake I had was a miserable thin thing in fact I first thought they had served me a fritter by mistake. And to top it all got charged 20p for a tiny sachet of ketchup ! Why can't this be provided on the tables when you are eating in ? I remember this place back in the 70s when it was Smiths Chippy and the food was always top quality and freshly cooked. I get the impression that with the continual queue of tourists they feel they don't need to try anymore. Won't be returning.

Visited today to buy food for my four grandchildren waiting across the road on the park. I accept they were busy(queuing out the door)but after placing my order I had to wait outside for another 20 minutes before finally collecting my food. It wasn’t until I got back to my patiently waiting family that we realised part of the order was missing. I returned after for a refund which I received but no apology. Average fish and chips and poor service. I suspect this business is totally reliant upon day trippers and has no interest in repeat business.

Called in for lunch had lunchtime special, small fish chips and mushy peas. Large portion of chips. Cost a reasonable £6.00. nice friendly staff, clean and tidy restaurant, not sure if toilets are on site.good location on the high street parking on the road, and car park close by.

After spending over £55 on food for the family then drinks I went up to the counter for sauce, 20p a sachet, I was told its cash only for anything under £5 I didn't have a penny on me, I'd have though as a good will gesture the shop would have given me a sauce free. I can guarantee we will NOT be visiting again and informing family and friends who plan to visit Matlock in the coming weeks.

Old dry chips, small portions & expensive fish & drinks. A total waste of money. Wouldn't recommend or come back again. A trap for newbies or tourists.

Visited for lunch on a recent Matlock jaunt. One queue for takeaway (pretty park opposite for eating outside if weather good) and another for eating in. Opted for eating in this time. Swift service, the people that came in a few minutes before us had their food before we'd even sat down! Our food took a little longer (as was cooked to order) but was still served in good time and with a smile. Great food, great portion sizes, excellent value. Lots to choose from. Perhaps menus on tables would be an idea so all the choices are in one place? Tables were cleared and cleaned quickly between customers which was good to see. Will certainly re-visit.

I met my family here last week, all the staff were lovely, the food was absolutely great, freshly cooked and really hot, when it was brought to the table. Will definitely be back 👍👍

Over priced for the meal - also paid 8 quid for meal accidentally forget to pay for drink, after processing order asked for a drink and told there was a £5 minimum order, can you believe, day light robbery, I’d just paid £8. Bad customer service no idea how to treat customers, be going elsewhere next time. Food was not worth the money to top it off.
