I'm really disappointed. We booked quite late but was advised the spa would be available. Asked several times, if any cancellations for treatments, I never got a response. Tried to use spa Sat afternoon only to be told it was closed. Also, bar shuts at 10pm

Disappointed it a few ways. Spa wasn't great. Rooms not cleaned properly. We came for the outdoor lido - it was empty . Staff were friendly.

Nice hotel. We stayed in a garden room. There was a split in the side of the bath. The radiator thermostat had fallen off. There was a hoover left in the hallway, which was a trip hazard. Laundery bags thrown outside in the parking area. We sat outside to have a drink & there was a knife left on the bench opposite us. This was clearly left there by a member of staff. The whole hotel needs organising better & a damn good clean. Health & Safety is clearly not a priority for this hotel. Cooked breakfast was mediocre. I booked this hotel for a family members birthday. I will not be returning.

Really dirty hotel make sure you have booked a room in the hotel and not the Annex where there is mold ,mildew, and broken tiles to the bathroom area and the single glazed windows ..cables sticking out of the bed. There is no security at this hotel. If you complain Sarah Foxton is the one you need to speak/complain too beware she may resort to 'dirty' tactics to evade the truth. Personally I never use foul language nor do I resort to lies Just shows that there is something desperately wrong not only at this hotel but with the Management named above who freely admits being in charge of her team.

Took my niece from the US for a facial here on 24/3/24 as part of her 21st present. How embarrassing. The place is a dump. The facial was the worst. I booked here because in the past I’ve had fantastic treatments & experiences but haven’t been for a few years, no idea what’s happened but it was awful. The “spa” itself was actually filthy and looked run down. I was given a damp towel and robe, both looked like they needed washing. The staff looked miserable and cheap. The lockers didn’t have keys and after asking they explained that a hen party had been in a few weeks back & stolen them all…well get them replaced! The changing rooms were pointless, pokey and stank because they were basically a toilet area with some unusable lockers. The “relaxing” area where you can lie while waiting was run down and certainly not in anyway relaxing. There was a couple who I guess were using the facilities as part of their stay at the hotel and they were there when we entered and still there when we left. It just felt uncomfortable having a man half dressed lounging in close proximity. The “water station” was two, relatively empty, dirty jugs. As for the treatment, wow, it was so bad! Firstly a young woman tried to explain what the treatment would consist of, but kept forgetting, while we stood awkwardly in the treatment room. The treatment itself was ridiculous. A facial where each product was not taken off and just felt like the most sticky awful buildup. It was applied like the beautician was scared to touch my face. The neck and shoulder “massage” was so ridiculously “light”, I could barely feel it and I got more stressed during and after it. The head massage consisted of dumping something akin to goose fat at the front of my hair and gently rubbing down a handful of hair at the front. All I could think when the treatment was taking place was, please let it just be my beautician that’s new and inexperienced and my niece is having the older more experienced woman who will be doing a great job. Nope! My niece was like…was that supposed be a gentle tickling session on only the front part of my cheeks and is my face supposed to feel sticky? Turns out we had exactly the same experience….terrible! The most annoying thing is they get you to fill out a huge form before the treatment highlighting where you have n concerns that you’d like tackling. They clearly just use that as a data gathering exercise because not one of my concerns were discussed or addressed. Both my niece and myself had unusual breakouts the next day. Absolutely shocking place, would not recommend and will never waste my money there again! Giving it 1 star is 1 too many!

An indifferent stay. Arrived Friday and greeted by three on reception (two were immaculately dressed and one who looked like the uniform hadn't seen an iron for weeks. Told that the bar was not serving food due to a medical emergency, so we walked down into the town for food and drink. That suited us, as the bar looked dead. Room was quite basic, especially as we paid more than the other hotels in the area, thinking we would be getting more for our money. Breakfast was included and there was a hot buffet, although the beans my wife had on the first morning were cold. She reported it and eventually a new batch were brought out. Bacon and sausages were good. But the scrambled eggs left a lot to be desired. All in all, we had a good weekend in Matlock, but in spite of the hotel, not because of it.

The short of it is don't go!! Six of us booked an afternoon cream tea spa. Including two vegans. We checked and double checked they could cater for vegans....The hotel got the timing wrong re treatments and cream tea. We weren't told we could use the outside pool. The afternoon tea was awful. Defrosted scones, some with chocolate chips. They tried to pass off the vegan scones with nothing on them. No explanation or apology until we complained. Today we've been told our promised refund won't happen. The spa was ok, but honestly just go somewhere else.....

If I could give it 0 stars, I would. Where do I start with this? It’s not a Spa as you have a steam room that has steam, but everything in there is cold; a small sauna (not even that hot) and a lazy spa (that doesn’t have any bubbles coming out of it) in what you would call your back garden… Everyone that works here is miserable and doesn’t seem like they want to work there, which reflects on the service… The swimming pool is on the other side of the “spa” and is not heated… We had treatments ( massage and facial ), which I would probably rate as a tickling session, as I could barely feel the lady doing the massage… The food gave us a stomach ache... I think it is pretty shameful to run a hotel in such a cheap way when the building is charming and historic. I would say stay away and spend your hard-earned money elsewhere.

Lovely one night stay. The hotel is in a great location, a short walk from the shops, cafes and some lovely walks. The hotel itself was lovely. Staff were so friendly and helpful, especially the lady on the bar. Room was warm and comfortable and we really appreciated the extra heater. Shower was so good! Room was a bit dated but we really didn’t mind. We used the pool which was fab. Staff there were so lovely too. Really recommend for a good value stay in Matlock bath!

Very very disappointed with this supposedly 4 star hotel. We were booked into a garden room over looking the pool and gardens. Nice you say. NO. It was a run down 2 storey wooden prefab building, built circa 1970 and not touched since. We made our way back to the main building and was told by reception, I knew you would be back. If they know its well below standard then know it down, before it falls down. I can't fault the staff as they quickly found us another room. However, the reception needs re painting as stained and paint peeling off. Our new room was much better but still had its faults. Carpet wasn't hoovered, wall paper peeling off the feature wall, draw knobs missing off draws, bathroom was tired as shower leaked badly, grouting missing from floor tiles, pushdown bath plug didn't work and the water dribbled out of sink tap. Our first night we ate in the hotel and decided to have a bar meal. When asking for the menu the bar manager said he has just told the chef to go home as we were the only people there. He rushed off to get him to cook us a burger and chips, something quick and easy. Well the burger was rock hard and like leather, the chips were anaemic and presented like a cheap cafe. We had booked an indian for the next night but on Saturday we had booked a table in the hotels restaurant. Blade of beef with potatoe fondant and 2 rock-hard glazed carrots braised cabbage with jus. It was presented well but below standard, I feel. I understand the hotel was refurbished in 2016 and probably looked great. 8 years on, its looking tired. Would not stay here again. The saving grace for the business was the staff. Such a shame as it was a weekend away for my good lady's 60th Birthday weekend.

Nice location polite and welcoming staff. What let it down was was that the Room felt tired and in need of redecoration. It had very creaky floors and had damage to furniture, there were stains on bed and carpet and a missing mirror. The view from window of the spa area and roof tops was sub optimal. No option for traditional English breakfast but if you like cold meat and cheese with salad and selection of bread to start your day then this wont be a problem for you. Dinner in the restaurant was very nice and reasonably priced. The room just wasn't up to our expectations. A shame as this could be a really nice place with the right investment and attention to detail. We didn't try any of the spa treatment or facilities and weren't even offered a list of what was on offer which seems like a missed opportunity for them.

Just had a wonderful 2 night stay at the New Bath Hotel, this weekend with my daughter aged 6. We found an amazing offer on secret excapes for dinner bed and breakfast in a junior suite ! And it was wonderful the suite was huge and over looked the pool, the food was delicious and far to much for our bellies and the staff were warm friendly and helpful. We had a slight problem, in that there had been some mix up from secrect excapes so we gad to move from our suite to a standard double on the second night but as it was just me and my little one this didn't bother us at all. Things to note though are that the hotel has no lift so not ideal for people with mobility problems, it's a great location for gulivers Kingdom, the mining museum and aquarium, plenty of parking, unfortunatly the pool is for over 18s only :( , and they don't have a children's menu in the restraunt or and salad options but what was on the menu was very yummy as was the simple continental breakfast which actually we preferred after the big dinners. Many thanks for a lovely stay we look forward to coming again in March :)

We'd booked a super posh new year meal and hotel stay here. Really top notch, fantastic welcome, room was lovely as was the six course meal and complimentary drinks. Good disco afterwards to see in the new year. The staff are lovely people, fun and friendly and can't do enough for you. We were both really impressed. The hotel is majestic and full of atmosphere. The hotel is apparently under new ownership. The only area they need to focus on is the information provided during the booking process. This left us with a few questions about the booking and event, which weren't answered until we arrived. Otherwise, brilliant..

The first room we had was spacious with views of the outdoor pool, however it was extremely cold. We asked at reception and were informed the heating was on a timer and only comes on 6pm to 10pm and again in the morning. Thankfully they were able to find us another room in the main part of the hotel. As we walked from one part to the other even the corridors felt warmer. The rooms were adequately furnished, the bathrooms very stylish. There's an amusing warning about the sash windows , advising you to be cautious. The food in the restaurant was not good. A burned bun and undercooked burger. We didn't have time to complain and request another meal; as we had tickets for a gig in Matlock. The hotel package days breakfast included. We expected it to be a cooked breakfast and were disappointed to find it was only continental. However there was a good selection of pastries, Cereal and fruit. It was good to see a seperate section for those who require gluten free options including a seperate toaster. In summer the outdoor heated pool would be delightful, there were 3 or 4 swimmers using it whilst we were there. Its heated by thermal springs and was not a comfortable temperature unless you are used to wild swimming. The location of the hotel is great, a 5 minute walk into Matlock. Cross to the other side of the road and turn left. The pavement on this side if the road stops abruptly. We enjoyed our stay. If we came again we would request a room in the main hotel and eat elsewhere.

Only a one night stay so we could take in the Christmas market, my wife myself and two friends, we really enjoyed our stay in our big spacious rooms looking over the swimming pool. Unfortunately the overnight snow put a bit of a dampener on our planes to take in more of the beautiful local area, leaving for home shortly after checking out. Thank you to the team for digging everyone out of the carpark, well done.

Booked a superior room. Was very small and cluttered had to duck to go through the door. As it was a birthday requested a better room. Was told by receptionist words to the effect of - You got it cheaper as it was booked through a booking company. So basically she was saying you get what your given. After a bit of back and forth requested an upgrade and was told it would be an additional £50. To which I said that’s too much so left it deciding to get on with the night. Next day the shower didn’t work. So had to rush off as we had an appointment at 11am to get showered at home. Having a takeaway coffee and a bit of fruit so missing breakfast. Made an email complaint no reply two days later so phoned and asked to speak to manger. The manger Sarah Foxin was in a meeting all day but offered me a £20 refund and emailed me saying I could have used the bath ! My wife has never washed her hair in the bath and never will. I have all emails if verification is required. I asked her to phone me to resolve it properly and she said no as it was resolved then accused me of harassing her. I asked for the official complaints procedure and she said this was it and all emails are reviewed by the owners. Told her I wouldn’t lower myself to accept the £20 and to keep it. She added I am barred from the hotel. To which I asked did she honestly believed I would want to stay there again.

We went for a dip in the thermal outdoor pool, it's was a chilly 17.7 degrees so brace yourself and recommend having spare clothes you can quickly throw on to keep warm. You need flip flops and swim hats but there were spares available. Short walk into town down a slight incline on pavements. A gentle uphill on the return. Plenty of parking.

We would definitely stay here again all things being equal, but New Bath is a bit of a strange mix of posh and crumby. It does check all the most important boxes: fabulous staff who are so helpful and go the extra mile, exemplary cleanliness (in terms of hoovering, bathroom, public toilets etc.), really nice beds and good linens, and a very convenient location with ample parking. However, the walls are quite dirty (desperately needs a lick of paint), the carpets are heavily stained (in the room and the passages), the bathroom extractor fan doesn't work, and the pool is dirty with green algae at the bottom. Add to this other odd things like long-time unfinished building work (there are no proper tiles on the patio, just raw cement floors, and the bottom of the bath has no skirting, leaving the beams exposed) along with single-glazed windows in the 'new' section. Odd. The rooms are a nice size though and all-in-all, we enjoyed our stay, and would probably try to stay there again on our next visit, due to its convenient location and wonderful staff.

We had balcony as well but it needs a bit of work. We had a Continental breakfast booked which was absolutely amazing-waffles,smoked salmon, baguettes, cream cheese, cupcakes, pancakes, cereals, croissants, jam, all sorts of juices, coffee, yoghurts, fruits. We were really impressed and it was so delicious, Defo worth to book the breakfast! Restaurant looks nice too. The only thing we were not that impressed with was the pool which looked a bit outdated (especially 1 end of it) and water was freezing cold. Most people who were in, were in a full swim suit. We booked and visited the outdoor open air pool for an hour a few days ago in our 'mini heatwave' and what a mistake that was. Apparently it was 19 degrees in the pool but when I stepped in my foot went numb.. And then my legs. I looked at the others and what I saw was people who were substantially larger in size, people in wetsuits and one woman had on a woolly hat as she swam! Felt like I was in some kind of Wim Hof twilight zone. 25 minutes submerged in the miserable pool full of insanity and I had no feelings left in my body. I had to defrost so I went to the nasty changing block - it was at least warmer then the pool of ice water but I felt like you could catch something in there. A sunny day probably would have been a lovely distraction from the drab filthy pool and changing block. Never going back. This review is for those who prefer warmth and cleanliness - avoid this place at all costs. The thermal spring pool has probably not been cleaned since 1698 .. And those who are lovers of cryogenics this is for you.

A big hotel in a convenient location for exploring the Peak District. The spa treatments were good and the outdoor pool was very popular. Breakfast was quite disappointing and clearly understaffed with tables not cleared and the Continental buffet frequently running out of various things. What staff were there were very friendly and trying their best. The room was clean and comfortable although the bath was very narrow which made using the shower quite difficult. The bar and restaurant area didn’t have any atmosphere so we didn’t use those. There are a couple decent pubs you can walk to in Matlock Bath and some nice walks you can do directly from the hotel.

I'm going to start with the cons first. The rooms are "ok". They're spacious, but there's clearly a lot of corners that have been cut in the interest of keeping costs down. The mattress was a bit too soft and the sofa bed was just god-awful. All I could feel was springs in my back. It seems the senior management are lacking courage or something because while the staff seem very nice and very sincere there's some obvious frustration and disappointment on their faces. There was a lot of chatter between staff members each morning , clearly disgruntled with upper management or something. The breakfast was ok for a continental breakfast but I would have liked better breakfast options. As for the positives. The location is great. Ideally located and very easy to find with ample parking. The grounds are also nice. The restaurant has a great ambience and the food is decent. Again, the staff are very nice and humble. The best bit is still the pool as all the other reviews keep saying. The pool staff are beautiful people, inside and out. They're incredibly passionate about the pool and want a good experience for everyone that dives in. The water is fresh from the well and everyone should try it out.

Were dirty also the spar waiting are only has 4 beds which were occupied, no seating the jacuzzi was absolutely disgusting no offer of a drink until it was high tea. The supposingly superior bedroom was on the top floor for a disabled person. It was never a superior room, more like a closet and had not seen a cleaner in age

Stayed here this week, enjoyed it. Was in main hotel in a warm clean refurbished room (hotel is going through modernisation programme), no complaints. Did ful board restaurant food quality was excellent, need to book in advance. Outdoor pool is a gem, spring fed and great size. Jean on reception so helpful as we're all the staff. Breakfast is continental & contains all that normal stuff. I didn't experience anything negative - maybe asking for a room in the main hotel & not being rude to the staff is the key. Will I go back definitely.

Booked a superior double for one Saturday night mid-February 2022. There was absolutely nothing superior about it at all. Curtain hanging off the rail. Iron burn on the carpet. Television not working. Internal telephone system not working. Loo seat didn't fit. Flood stains on the carpet. Peeling paint and bashed walls. On check out, I complained and was told that my room was due to be refurbished. When I said I had taken photos, I was given a £50 discount and the offer of a future complimentary stay which would be emailed to me. After 4 phone calls over a couple weeks, I eventually was able to speak to someone (who had been there on the weekend of my stay) who promised to sort out the complimentary stay. She said she would send me an email that evening. Nothing came. Have tried again by telephone - no answer. Have now given up. The staff I came across were pleasant enough but didn't have a clue about customer service and communication after the stay has been non-existent - and yet they manage to send me emails about reviewing my stay. I waited to see whether they followed through on their promise, but now I'm ready to write my review as requested. I wonder if it will be published.

If i could score it zero I would. In order to actually use the sauna and steam room you need to book about a month in advance, so not very good if you are looking to just go away for the weekend. If you want to eat in their restaurant you have to get their before 7pm, as they refuse any walk ins after that. We stayed in an annexed part of the hotel that resembles an old school, and our hotel room has a locked adjoining door to the room next to us. The double bed consisted of two mattresses, there was a fire escape door directly outside our room which was open, making the room cold. Also, they do not put the heating on after 9pm, so our room was freezing. Spoke to the lady at reception, and she was very unapologetic. Her attitude was basically, well go somewhere else then. I am going to write this on as many feedback forums as I can to save future guests having to experience this. Also, the hotels Google advert says it has an indoor pool however- apparently it has not had an indoor pool for over 6 months. The hotel advert also says each room has a rainfall shower, ours just had a standard shower.

On first impression it looked beautiful... Staff seemed nice on the front desk... Room looked good. Then i went for a shower. Noticed the mouldy looking grout in the tiles first.. then left the shower to run... overhead.. had a stronger shower in the rain. . Tv didnt work. Noticed no remote or aerial. No leafket with numbers for reception etc. No menu.. or room service. Went down asked for remote and aeriel... was told would be sorted . It wasnt. Asked the next day. Went back was habded and aerial and remote. Did it mysrlf. Although the remote didnt work. Was told would get another ... never did. I asked on sundeay afternoon about 4.45 for a sandwich was told sorry the chefs left at 4. No extra bedding in the room. In fairness not what you expect from a hotel that boasts its a spa.

We visited for a one night stay last night, and we were really disappointed with state of our room. I was shocked by the state of the shower and bath, there’s was mould in the majority of the grout. The furniture and walls were badly marked and there were cobwebs on the ceiling. The room was also cold, with no extra blankets or pillows, and no hairdryer (I asked reception but they said they were all out). The ironing board we used was badly stained, I would of been embarrassed to hand it out to guests. No hairdryer in room, receptionist informed me they were all out. The section of the hotel we were allocated was awful (looked like a cheap motel) and everything appeared really worn and shabby. Continental breakfast was ok, the Service was poor, I asked if there was any fresh tomato and the waiter informed me he would go and check but never came back to me. Staff were uninterested. I’ve emailed the GM, still awaiting a response.

The staff were so lovely at reception and in the bar, the hotel itself was beautiful the only problem was the room, they definitely need updating and some double glazed windows! It was freezing in our room and the carpet had loads of stains, also the beds weren't really comfortable! We were in a room with a balcony so I'm not sure if they've done other rooms up already.

Infuriating customer service… We booked a spa day for 2nd Jan, drove 45 mins, got there and they said oh we don’t have space for you. Have then been chasing back and forth between the hotel and spa seekers, both of them saying to speak to the other person. Finally spoke to someone today who will give us it back minus £20, so we’ve paid £20 for the pleasure. The thing that actually got me annoyed was the tone.. as though they have done nothing wrong… well anyway, won’t be booking here again. So much for a relaxing spa experience.

After attempting to book a two night break the Reception Supervisor put the phone down on me and would not answer subsequent calls. The reason? They, after a round of emails, finally advised me on the phone that they do not accept Red Letter Day Gift Vouchers after confirming initially that they do and we had booked accommodation with them. When I questioned this - in a polite way, the Reception Supervisor who answered my call and whose name I have, promptly cut me off and did not reply. My background is Customer Service so I found this incredibly rude. Wow, unbelievable and I'll provide feedback to Red Letter days and the Hotel Owners.

Lots of small issues on arrival that could be corrected easily and quickly however became a big issue and problem. Customer service was so poor, and as guests we weren't looked after. On arrival at our room we had no balcony key to get on to our balcony and outdoor seating, only one mug so couldn't have a brew together on arrival, stained hand towels, broken tv remote, poor service on the telephone and hairs in the bath. Rang down to reception in which they said someone would bring items up in 10/15 minutes. We got settled watching tele, nearly 2 hours had gone by, no items had been brought up and no phone call to let us know they haven't had chance yet/they're bringing them asap. Rang down and the supervisor said "umm, I think housekeeping have left them outside your door" I replied "one minute" as i went to check and he had put the phone down. Rang straight back and no answer. Nothing left outside the door. Had to then go downstairs and collect myself - response i got was "i can bring them up in 5 minutes when someone else starts!" which was shouted from the back as I was speaking to a lady sat in her coat on the front desk. No apology for the wait, inconvenience or not acceptable/missing items. Balcony key not mentioned, mentioned again, excuse after excuse "none of the rooms with balcony's have keys" (I queried why he had been looking if they don't have keys) "housekeeping must of misplaced it" It was very clear from the start that the supervisor knew there was no key - still no apology. I asked what the alternative was as we had specifically booked a room with outdoor seating and a balcony, he replied "i don't know" I suggested changing rooms to one with a balcony and a key to him to respond "there isn't any to give you" It was excuses after excuses, including blaming covid. Covid is no excuse for a missing balcony key and not informing us of this on arrival or cancelling/changing our room because of this & Covid is no excuse for waiting 2 hours for a mug and clean hand towels and then having to chase them up. Small issues became a huge ordeal, but the main issue is the way we were treated as guests. The supervisor in charge had no people skills and had no problem solving skills or showed any pride in the hotel. We booked this hotel to see in the new year and it ruined the experience. On reflection the room itself for the price we paid £80 for one night was very outdated and poor, wall paper, carpets and bathroom needed TLC. Sent feedback in regards to this and asked to be passed on to the manager, the supervisor was aware I was going to do this and gave me the email address in order to send it to, heard absolutely nothing back, not even a "thank you for your feedback" this was 12 days ago now. I just personally feel that with the way the supervisor dealt with us and with not hearing anything back from the manager in regards to feedback on the hotel that customers feelings aren't important and are invalid. If you want to stay in matlock bath I would most certainly look at other hotels as an alternative to here.

DO NOT STAY HERE Bought a £200 voucher for this hotel as a gift for my partner. We booked a premium room for one night and also a massage each in the spa. Experience was pretty poor from start to finish. Our massage was booked for 3pm and we arrived at the hotel with 45 mins spare with plans to have lunch and a drink before the massage. Went to the bar/lunch area and had to wait 35 minutes before we were served meaning we had 5 mins to drink a pint and eat a sandwich before the massage. Hotel staff coming in and out of the bar and ignoring us. Even went over to them to politely ask if we could get a drink and the response was ‘someone else will be with you soon’. Then waiting another 20 mins. - spa was great but felt it was slightly ruined by the stressful experience before hand. - room was dirty and had a community of ladybugs in there that seem to come to life at night (we counted about 15 in total dotted around the bed) - went down to have dinner in the hotel approx 18:30 and sat down in a literally deserted restaurant. Waiter then came over to tell us it’s reservation only so we couldn’t have dinner that night. (Restaurant was empty!) worked out better though cos the menu looked very expensive and we went into Matlock to have a lovely Thai meal at Thailand no1 instead. (Service was brilliant in the Thai place… big contrast to the hotel!) - then when it came time to check out. They charged us in full for the entire stay completely disregarding the £200 voucher paid in advance. We had spoke with reception the previous day to make sure the voucher would be used and they confirmed it would. - the front desk then said they didn’t have the authority to refund us the money they wrongly charged us for the room and could we please type out what had happened in an email and send it to them. Took another 30 minutes to check out as a result of this and we are driving away now completely dissatisfied and charged twice for our stay with no refund yet. They also had the cheek to then try charge us for our bar bill despite us already paying twice what we should have done! DO NOT STAY HERE

Stayed for one night, specifically to take advantage of the beautiful outside spring fed pool. The hotel website was out of date so I could not swim when I arrived which was very disappointing but I had a lovely swim the next morning. The hotel itself is a bit tired and the owners really don’t seem to have invested to make the most of the location and history of the hotel. It was also very understaffed. That said the staff on duty were very helpful and could not have been more welcoming. I also ate in the restaurant which was pretty good value. I would probably not stay again but will definitely visit the pool.

As long as you go knowing that: - there's not much of a WiFi connection - you can't expect to use an iron in under 1h 30mins - you maybe ignored on the odd occasion while the staff work out admin, that's unrelated to you, amongst themselves - breakfast is mainly bread based items, yogurt and fruit. - hot water for the shower lasts just a couple of short minutes. Then in all seriousness there's a lot going for a lot going for this hotel. The spa is on the small side but with great treatments and facilities (advanced bookings only). The decor is clean and modern. You may need to use the electric heater provided in the room as it's an old building with single glazed sash windows in some rooms, but toasty with the heater. The restaurant and bar are modern, cosy areas and we found the service good. The outdoor pool is geothermal and so remains at a constant 19°c. Worth a dip at anytime of the year. The location is great for touring the south peaks area and there ample parking on site. We didn't eat lunch or dinner here but the food we saw served looked good and the menu for evening dinner seemed extensive. Finally our trip was made by the smiles, warmth and wit from Tom. He has natural customer service skills and the little human touches he adds make everyone feel valued and welcome. Thanks to you.

After a long walk we arrived looking forward to getting checked in but had to wait an hour and a quarter after check in time for our room to be ready for us. My husband wanted to swim in the outdoor pool but there were no towels in the room. Phoned reception who said they'd send some up, after 30 minutes they hadn't arrived so my husband went down to get them. He was then told the swimming pool was now closed and couldn't use it. The room was absolutely great for an overnight stay but the bathroom unfortunately fell below an acceptable standard of cleanliness. The bath was heavily stained and there was black mould all around the sealant on the bath and some of the grout in the tiles. It was quite off putting and I was reluctant to use it. On checking out the next morning I told the receptionist that I didn't think the bathroom was cleaned well at all, she was surprised but I had taken photos and when she saw them she agreed it wasn't acceptable. She gave me the managers email address and asked us to contact him with photos, I did and his response was 'Mould is a result of temperature changes and I can confirm that we are working on a programme of sealant replacement in a number of our bedrooms.' What it actually needed was a good scrub with bleach or mould bathroom spray, it was due to a build up of not being regularly kept on top of. He also stated the swimming pool closed at 4pm in winter but didn't seem to recognise we were there at 3pm, had we not had to wait over an hour in the bar we would have had an hour to swim. My intent was to inform them so they could put it right for the next customers, however, the response wasn't in anyway recognising this was off putting, just merely a comment about trying a new sealant and no apology.

If this is a 4* hotel, we’ll I’m Colonel Gadaffi. This is a very tired and weary hotel in need of significant upgrade and cleanliness. We stayed in Room 43 for 2 nights as a treat for my wife prior to her hospitalisation for cancer surgery. We arrived after recognised check in hours to be told the room wasn’t ready but was asked to wait in the bar and receive a complimentary drink. That would have been fine, but no staff to serve us - thus no drink! Our bedroom was very tired and cold upon arrival. A small flaking radiator was totally inadequate for the size of room - but a small electric radiator in the wardrobe eventually managed to get the room to an adequate temperature. Bathroom was freezing and damp - a small towel radiator totally insufficient to heat the room. The ingrained black mould on the window frame suggested the bacteria was having a better time than us. Then the breakfast - absolutely inadequate and feel cheated that the hotel does not make it clear that a hot buffet not on offer. For a cold breakfast, no meats or nice bread is unacceptable. When I enquired why no hot choice on offer I was told ‘because it is a spa hotel’ That got my goat - if they are suggesting they are pushing the healthy option then 25 g of sugar in the yoghurts and sugar/saturated fat laden cake/brioche is a joke. Not an ounce of protein in sight at breakfast (unless you like smoked salmon or plastic cheese). I’m getting irritated as I type, so will stop here, but definitely not the relaxing break we wanted before hospital beckons. Stay clear.

My partner booked a night away and dinner at the New Matlock Bath Hotel for my birthday. He had requested a table by the window which was honoured. We ordered a bottle of pink Asti which was very good. The waiter took out order and apologised that there would be a wait and again when he bought the starters. We didn’t feel as though we had waited too long, 30 minutes from when we were seated to starters arriving and it took us a while to decide what to have. We both had the beetroot and juniper cured salmon followed by the duck which was cooked perfectly. For desert my partner ordered the banana and date pudding and I had the blackberry and tonka bean panna cotta, which had the perfect wobble. Wasn’t sure about the picked blackberries though. We would have liked to have finished the meal with an Irish coffee but was told they were unable to make one due to not having fresh cream but could do a coffee, served with milk and an Irish whisky separately. I was very surprised that a restaurant with an A La Carte menu didn’t have fresh cream. Service was excellent
