Visited with my wife for coffee and cake that was advertised on a large poster outside. Was told the cake had sold out. This was 10 am in the morning. Had to wait for coffee while staff finished off their conservation. Poor customer service. Will not return. Much better independent coffee shops in town that value your custom.

Breakfast Bun with a friend at the Southbank. The bun was cold (frozen) in the middle, the sausage and tomato, even though it had been in the microwave. Afterwards felt a sickly taste in the mouth and gurgling stomach - probably was laced with sugar or artificial additives. Highly unhealthy. The lady who served us was rude short and nasty, why I have no idea. Views were very nice as always.

Great jacket meal deal, pulled pork was lovely. Lady who serviced us was jolly, friendly and helpful. She really made us smile and is the reason I went to the effort of popping on a review, great service deserves recognition

The 3 July was their last night in Beefeater as we know it. I’ve been a fan of Beefeater for 50 years from child to adult and its phasing out is rather sad. We came 9 days ago for a birthday meal that was great and tonight I came to say goodbye to staff. Great food and service under conditions which Whitbread PLC should be wincing at. Staff numbers and menu run to minimum only to replace by a poor stable mate in the future, I assume for residents only. Wish them all well and the duty manager on my last two visits was really great - lovely character and hope she goes on to excel in hotel/hospitality/tourism and leisure. A great night for me - in the end of what’s left of Beefeater Grandstand.

All I can say is how amazing customer service is here I was served by all three of Tensi, Tasha and mark and all three are such hard working individuals and giving it their all even with people becoming difficult as a barista/ manager I’d be super proud of how well this team is I hope they continue to work hard and keep giving their amazing customer service they are a asset to Costa

Popped in the shop as it was handy whilst shopping but can honestly say it will be the last ...there is a reason it has a bad reputation! I went in to buy a baguette and roll I had a ten pound note the amount came up to £7 and the girl gave me £2 pound change....basic maths but basic staff so I'm not at all surprised? I've been living in the town for a short period and the overall sight and disinterest with shop workers is unbelievable? They honestly couldn't care less it's sad to see it really is. It didn't help that the girl in Greggs along with her colleague were more interested in sorting a name badge and kept me waiting!!!! ( It's quite simple as soon as you see a member of the public you engage in polite, friendly, quick service!!! I know most of them would prefer to be sat at home messing with their phones but there actually individual's out there who would love that position and Excel in doing it correctly so think on.

Everything about Brightside (as it’s now called) is just really good: there’s an extensive range of food freshly cooked to order, the decor is bright and sunny and all the staff we met were very friendly and most helpful, It was a pleasure throughout and we look forward to returning. Highly recommended.

We originally popped in just for a quick coffee to take down to the beach—simple plan, right? But fate had other ideas. As we waited, the chef’s voice carried from the kitchen, passionately listing off the day’s fresh specials like a poet reciting sonnets. That was it. Plans changed. The beach could wait. And thank God we did. The menu was a feast of creativity and freshness, with something to tempt every palate. But when the venison burger caught my eye, there was no turning back. Perfectly cooked, rich, and juicy, it hit that rare sweet spot between rustic and refined. Paired with a generous portion of golden fries—crisp on the outside, fluffy inside—it was a proper showstopper. Even in the off-season, the place had a buzz about it, with the indoor tables lively and the outdoor area humming with casual chatter and seaside energy. You just know it’s going to be packed come summer—and rightly so. One thing’s for certain: this isn’t just a stop-off. It’s a reason to come back. Again and again.

We came for Sunday carvery when we visited Dawlish. The food was good, although the beef was a bit chewy. The Yorkshire puddings were huge. Service was quick and friendly and the Covid-19 set up was good. We would return if we came back to the area.

Stopped off by chance while cycling the Exe Estuary cycle path - what a great find. Warm and comfortable with lovely staff. Food was excellent - fish and chips (crispiest batter ever had) and a chefs special wild mushrooms with truffle and garlic - wow! Good coffee too! Highly recommended.

We've stayed at Finlake several times over the years and therefore visited The Retreat on numerous occasions. Obviously this is just our personal opinion but for us it just isn't going in the right direction. Years back, when everything was newly built, it was reasonably priced, good selection and always busy (in a good way). Our previous visit, things had got a bit more expensive but service was still good. This visit (during school half term) we booked a table, expecting it to be busy. When we got there it was empty and there was no longer table service. The prices have increased markedly. Chicken Pasta at £23 is just crazy. A 250ml glass of Wine is £8.10. For a typical family of 4, it seriously adds up over the week! But...the food that we did have was very good and piping hot. Sadly with the lack of choice and high prices, we didn't eat here during the remainder of our stay.
