Service has been fantastic, I joined my family for a few days over the past week and James has been an amazing host - chatty, accommodating and outright friendly. Had food one evening, wouldn't necessarily recommend the ribs, but for drinks and socialising The Retreat is a great place to go! Will be returning! Adam from Bristol (3 dogs)

We were staying for a midweek break during the Easter holidays at the resort and decided to visit the restaurant on the first night but felt it let down the park so didn’t visit again. It’s set up like a burger place and has a bar area and restaurant up the stairs - we arrived with our buggy and was told to carry it up (about 10/15 stairs) which we did even though afterwards we discovered there was a ramp to access this top area via an external door! We also asked for a Highchair for my husband to be pointed in the direction of them, they were all filthy. Staff were polite and friendly but as it was quiet (5 o’clock) they were happier to be stood around chatting to one another than checking on customers. My husband took our children to the toilet and discovered there was no hand soap (after wiping them up iykyk) so went to ask the bar staff for some and was told it would be replenished- bearing in mind he’s not washed his hands at this point - he came back up to where we were sitting and stood waiting. Saw the initial member of staff serving customers instead of refilling the soap so asked the waitress she said he was coming (even though he clearly wasn’t) so my husband asked if there were any other toilets in the hub area available he could use and she suggested using the disabled toilets which he did and after 10 minutes or so of faff managed to rejoin us with clean hands. The burgers were around £15 each and were tasty but very small - the children’s meals were fairly good portions (the burgers not the sausage and chips) but there was an offer on for children to eat half price - this was then explained that it was one child per adult eating once we’d ordered. Kids meals were priced at £8 each for just the meal not a package deal like other retailers that often inc drink/pudding. We didn’t stay for dessert. On our final evening we decided to try the on-site takeaway option and paid £2 for delivery to our lodge. We ordered Greek Gyros boxes (£13 each) and these were a huge let down the chips were lovely but the ‘gyros’ was just some plain grilled chicken fillets in a pitta bread with measily salad and tzatziki (which was the saving grace to give the dish some flavour) definitely wouldn’t recommend and the takeaway options were limited - a shame the burgers weren’t available for this?

Appearances can be deceptive when you first step inside The Retreat Restaurant at Finlake. as it seems to be a laid back place. However, there's nothing casual or laid back about the excellent high quality food and friendy but professional service. The eatery serves varieties of mainly Burgers, Hot Dogs and Chilli, with Vegan options included, and I chose the Chilli Con Carne with Rice. The dish was cooked exactly how I like it and I polished it off in no time, followed by a helping of dark chocolate ice cream with chocolate sauce. The others at the table also waxed lyrical about their choices, served by an excellent team, who also bothered to keep us informed when there was a slight delay on the arrival of the food. The atmosphere was relaxed but highly lively when we visited, but the clientelle included people of all ages. My family and I were here at Finlake for my birthday weekend, and this eating place is one which I would highly recommend.

Was a little unsure to begin with after reading the variety of reviews. One recently classed as a gastronomic delight, another said they served black chips?!? Both are probably too far to the end of the scale, but we had a very pleasant experience. We arrived at Finlake, unpacked and wondered down to the retreat for some food. We hadn’t booked but they found us a table (would suggest booking though as others who arrived later were not able to get a table). Our food came quickly, it was hot and tasty, and the service was great - what more can you ask for? My wife and daughter had the pasta, good sized portion and very tasty, my son had battered cod and chips / again, excellent, and he devoured it. I had the beetroot and shallot tart, even though I’m not vegetarian, and that was also very tasty. Cant really fault the place considering it’s in a retreat like this, next to a Sports bar. Drinks are defo overpriced, but that’s pretty standard in the UK now. Overall, very happy with what we had and would go there again if we needed to.

The Hub Cafe was excellent for breakfasts - we had a full English daily, setting us up for the day. The staff were brilliant, super friendly and helpful. The menu selection for breakfast, lunch/dinner were great. There is a small shop at the back of the cafe which sells all the essentials in case you forget or run out of anything. The Retreat Pub Restaurant was great too. This offers a different menu to the Hub and was fresh, hot and tasty. Again fantastic staff.

Restaurant is open until 9pm supposedly but we arrived at 8pm and tried to order food at 8.20pm and was told they couldn't take more orders for the kitchen. About 2/3 of the tables were empty. We went to Hub instead which is take-away style food. When we left at 9.05pm the Retreat restaurant was almost empty and staff were sitting having drinks (photo). Staff didn't recognise Finlake MyBand so didn't give discount on drinks. This was addressed to reception who swapped our bands but didn't offer to compensate for the missed discounts the previous day. Menu looked good so we tried again at lunchtime later in holiday. Bar choice and Fish and chips were good, hence 2 starts rather than none. Seafood linguine was well cooked but bland. Worst piece of steak we've ever had. Should have had it well done - it was inedible med-rare so dog got it. Didn't go again and never will.

Came here as a treat for kids after first day back at school having been swimming. The atmosphere is nice and the waitress was friendly. Food on menu looked expensive but went with it as it was a treat. The really straightforward food (salad, burger, paste for children) took absolutely ages to arrive (10-15 minutes for scoops of ice cream at the end for the kids). It was nearly empty so I’m not sure why everything was this slow. When we got the food I was pretty shocked at the portion sizes considering the price, eg £6 for two thin slices of sourdough toast and some herby butter….crazy. Feel a bit bad for the captive audience in the lodges, not sure we would try eating out at Finlake again when there’s so much better value and choice out there to be honest.

We have visited this establishment on previous occasions and enjoyed the simple fayre, the drinks and service. During the current Covid protocols we have found the staff to be thorough and courteous in equal measure. However this latest visit left us concerned by the obvious lack of basic Covid-driven safety. Several guests arrived in the restaurant and wandered around whilst not wearing face coverings. At no time was this behaviour challenged by the supervision staff. I also noticed that our table had remains of food smeared on its surface. I brought this to the attention of the supervisor asking how this could have remained if, as she claimed, the table had been thoroughly sanitized prior to us being g seated. With something of a couldn't-care-less attitude she promised to send someone to clean it. Not surprisingly this didn't happen. When the food finally arrived it was poorly presented and of modest quality compared with previous experience.I suggest if you fancy some pub grub you should find a pub!

I stayed at finlake resort for 3 days and whilst I was here I enjoyed every bit. The first day we arrived we decided to sit outside and had food which there was plenty of seating and you did not need a reservation. The staff were very accommodating and even put the heaters on for us and our little puppy. Everything was great, variety on menu, service, staff, cleanliness and presentation of food, however my starter I could not say the same. I started with the mussels and my boyfriend had the honey belly pork. Unfortunately these mussels were not right and as soon as I put one in my mouth I immediately spat it back out on the plate. I never ever would do something like that but I was too concerned there was something wrong with them and decided after a few attempts to return them and informed the waitress they tasted very off. Once I had, the manager came over to our table and gave his apologies however said that he saw no problem with them and believed they were fine. Each to their own I could not eat them and the manager asked if he could get me something else, I declined and it was taken off the bill. However everything else was great. The belly pork, scampi, fish and chips (my boyfriend did opt for the mussels for his main but changed after my situation with them) it was all lovely so it was such a shame I had such a bad experience. We also had sticky toffee pudding, there was only an option for ice cream and we would have loved custard and a bit more toffee sauce! Other than that we ordered with the retreat and the hub throughout our stay and had no further issues. I would go back despite the mussels I’ve added a few pictures of meals we had during our stay.

We visited whilst staying at the finlake holiday park. I appreciate that covid 19 restrictions were on but there is no excuse for the poor quality food. We were a family of 4 and ordered different dishes . The food was of a poor quality . My burger was raw and not cooked. There were no staff about to highlight this to and I did mention this when the dishes were collected. All that I got was well you ate most of it. This was from the manager as well and I would have expected a lot more, an apology would have sufficed especially as the restaurant wasn’t cheap. There are a lot of pubs and restaurants nearby and I would suggest people use these. The holiday part is well worth visiting just not the restaurant

We went to The Retreat on 16th September 2020 for my Mums birthday meal as we didn’t want to go far from the lodge. We had eaten food from The Hub and enjoyed it so presumed we would enjoy eating here. We were so wrong. We ordered; Gammon, Chicken Burger, Rump Steak and Scampi. The Gammon was lovely, a really pig portion and very tasty. The Scampi was dry, like it had been over cooked, but there was a large portion so was good value for money. We asked for the Rump to be medium rare, and it came out more medium well. Other than that it was only ok. We asked for the Chicken Burger to be without coleslaw and sauce. It came without these but also without the cheese and bacon it should have. We sent it back and it was quickly rectified. This was the most disappointing main meal, the chicken was dry and over cooked and the bun was dry and tough. We decided to take a chance and see if dessert would be better. We ordered Cheesecake, two portions of Churros and a Chocolate Sundae. The Cheesecake was lovely. The Churros were filled with oil and pretty much inedible, the chocolate sauce that went with them was cold and did not have much flavour. Instead of a Chocolate Sundae we were presented with a bowl of vanilla ice cream. We sent that back and it was replaced with a rather hastily made Chocolate Sundae (chocolate ice cream in a glass with whipped cream and a bit of chocolate sauce, not really a sundae in our opinion). Overall we are extremely disappointed with our meal. We have had some lovely meals at other onsite restaurants (at other parks) but this was a huge let down. We paid £78 for 4 of us. Our recommendation is to skip The Retreat and drive 10 minutes up the road to Ten Tors Inn where we had a delicious two course meal for less.

Absolutely avoid at all costs. We have been to Finlake on many occasions and tried the retreat as we had resort vouchers and the spa was unavailable. On our visit we had nachos for starter best part of £10 might I add. The nachos were stale with a distinct lack of cheese but getting it half price as part of eat out to help out. We visited again a few days later with family. We all had a basket meal 2x scampi 6x chicken. All of which took ages to arrive, might I add in an empty restaurant. When it did arrive the chicken was so spicy it was inedible for my younger children. When I told a member of staff we were told that’s how it always comes. Ok then. The biggest shock was the bill. For 8 basket meals and 7 soft drinks it was nearly £80 There are so many better place where you can eat get in your car and go explore.

What a disappointment. Service was incredibly slow and the food took forever to come out... and when it did, it was wrong, poorly made and tasteless...The menu offered starters as a main portion for an extra £5 per meal. There were 6 of us, 2 of us had ordered the nachos and the sesame chicken strips as starter portions and 2 of us had ordered the same meals but as the main meal portion size. However when the main meals came out the portion sizes were EXACTLY the same as the starter potion!! The only difference was that the chicken strips were on a bed of french fries (which only cost £2 on the menu).. so how is it we paid an extra £10 for these two meals to be bigger but they were the same size with a few extra fries! We sent back the food and they did provide two larger portions, however this should never have been an issue in the first place, makes you wonder how many other people they rip off? The burgers were also incredibly bland & had no flavour. We wouldn’t have minded so much if the meals were cheaper than the usual restaurant prices yet the prices for all the meals were the same as any other nicer restaurant.. It’s a shame because this restaurant is based on such a lovely holiday complex however the food and service does not reflect the location. The only positive things about the place are the staff as they were helpful when our complaints were made and the nachos were pretty tasty, but would be shocked if they weren’t tasty given the ease of the dish. Will not be going back !!

Really disappointed the food was Luke warm, potatoes so small they were rock hard and waited for cauliflower cheese to be restocked and it has clearly just come out of the fridge / freezer it was stone cold. After complaining a bit was taken out and put in the microwave still cold in the middle. The only saving grace was the lush pudding but there was only a choice of 2 types of pudding so couldn't really go wrong. The menu and food has really gone down hill since our last visit and even with a £20 discount voucher offered at the beginning of the holiday to tempt you to eat there it was not worth the risk again in my opinion. We were really nervous about coming here for food because of the recent bad reviews, however it was absolutely delicious. I’m not sure if something has changed recently (maybe a new chef, menu perhaps) but the meals we had bore no resemblance to the ones described in the other negative reviews. We came on three occasions during our holiday; the first time we had the carvery, then the second time we had the pulled pork tacos, burger and kids spag Bol. Then the third time we had the rack of ribs, chicken wings and the kids spag Bol again. It was all really delicious (especially the ribs, the meat was so tender). We were so impressed by the fact that so much of the food was homemade, all the marinades, pasta sauces, burger patties. Someone at this restaurant is clearly a very good cook! The only negative I’d say is that menu isn’t that extensive and there’s not much choice on the desert front. Other than that, we loved it

Asked if the sausage and mash from the children’s menu could be done as an adults got told no so ordered it as a child’s it then came out with no gravy when asked if we would like any sauces I said yes gravy to then be told sorry no there’s none made up!! My husband asked for steak medium to well for it to come out dripping blood when he let the manager know she replied it is a tough one steak! not when your a chef! She then took it and brought back the same steak and just added a few extra chips was really disappointed with the service and food

We have eaten here many times previously and have always found it excellent. That’s why after a recent very poor meal (Thai beef salad was inedible) we tried again. Second visit was excellent

We were looking forward to having a cooked family breakfast during our stay, we were so disappointed. Breakfast price does not include Tea and coffee, making it very expensive, when the drinks arrived my tea was served in a cup 3/4 full with tea bag in, no spoon or milk, had to go and find my own teaspoon and go to the buffet counter and use the milk from the cereal and ask for some extra hot water to fill my cup. The breakfast hot food was average except for the sausages,

We ate here twice for dinner and lunch. Tapas selection was tasty and portions were enormous. Chicken strips and burgers were tasty. Sandwiches were well filled and bread was really fresh. My only complaint would be lack of availability. They seemed under-prepared for the first week of the Easter holidays. During our dinner they had no bitter on tap and no Shiraz. The following day no chicken was available. However, servers were really friendly and food arrived quickly.

Visited this place 3 times over the week, twice for drinks and once for the curry night. Service was really poor, staff not at all talkative and not clear on whats going on. 2 new staff members from another park also not clear how to operate the tills-wheres their training? Felt sorry for them really. They ran out of coke on one visit and left me waiting whilst someone went off to get some bottles from the shop, the curry night was the worst. £14.95 for a “curry buffet”. OMG! Empty food trays on the hot counter, hard and dry samosa’s, oily deep fried mini popadoms you get in packets. Asked where the food was, reply was don’t know, think its coming. Tried asking for the manager who wasn’t available seemingly, finally ate after a 15 minute wait and all my family had finished their meals. Probably the worst curry I’ve eaten sadly. Really poor food offering on this occasion. Worth pointing out that you get 10% discount by paying on your finlake band, but note that all food and drink is at least a 10% premium to most places anyway so think this is how they spin the “deal”

As a lodge owner we tend to eat in or go to local pubs. However we decided to try the steak night yesterday and were very pleased we did. Our steaks were cooked exactly as we ordered, one rare/one we'll done, and were very tender. The chunky chips were perfect as was the pepper sauce and coleslaw. I managed to find room for a dessert and the chocolate brownie and ice-cream was delicious. Well done to the chef for a lovely dinner.

Ate out here on our first night of stay at Finlake. Everything was cooked just right. I had a chilli burger and it was very tasty. My girlfriend really enjoyed her food as did the kids. Deserts were also very nice. Licensed bar too so a couple JD and cokes were enjoyed :) a little bit pricey but it’s a restaurant on sight so we sort of expected that. Would recommend

Thankfully we left it til the last night to visit the restaurant. 2 steaks for £22.50 offer was on so we decided to give it a try. We ordered 2 steaks, one medium, one medium rare, onion rings and sauce at extra cost. The waiter brought the medium well first - alarms bells started, when I informed him we didn’t order a medium well he returned to the kitchen to check, returned with the same steak and confirmed it was medium rare. It definitely was not. We sent it back, I ate the medium whilst waiting, half of it was just fatty and inedible. The medium rare came out better the second time, apart from the fatty parts. Think that’s just down to poor quality suppliers. The whole experience was Really disappointing and the staff are just young and don’t give good customer service. Unless you are over 60 and they are after a tip. Witnessed that before we ate. They stop serving at 9, and are more interested with finishing and going to the silent disco as we were lucky enough to listen to that conversation. They knew we had crap food and did nothing about it. No management in site to speak to. No discount, or even offering a new sauce to go with the new steak. Ruined our night, glad we didn’t rely on eating out every night!

Food here is good if you don't want anything challenging or fresh - its mainly Wetherspoon quality and doesn't offend anyone - frozen food wholesale delivered - microwave ready meals - deep fried food and sandwiches etc - pizzas are now available up to 9.30pm in the peak season and they deliver to the lodges etc which is great - breakfasts are the best - they cook eggs how you like them - would be nice if they opened for 8am instead of 8.30am - coffee is Costa and great although the machine in the small shop isnt up to standard and we were often given poor coffee that was re made - again staff are great in both parts and go the extra mile when you talk to them

Booked a table for 6 people on Thursday which should have been "Curry Night" but on sitting down we were told that there was no curry due to non delivery and we were handed the a la carte menu which had a curry on it, so we assumed that as unavailable as well, so didn't order it. Imagine our annoyance when we saw other diners being served curry. The food we did get was good, service was good and prices not too bad.

Menu same for entire week. On specials nice i.e. curry night they actually ran out of curry. Flat coke constantly. Ceasar salad got smaller and smaller each day. They forgot the bacon bits on my salad, when I mentioned it, they took the salad back and literally threw 2 rashers on top. Bit shabby if you ask me. Was OK. Nothing to rave about.

Visited with the family whilst we stayed at this lodge resort. I was worried from previous reviews I had read but it was surprisingly good, tasty and suitable for the children. Steaks were well cooked and tasty and well presented. Not a lot of ambience but there were only a few diners. Well worth a visit and reasonably priced.

Very impressed with both quality of food and service. If there is a negative it’s that the restaurant is only briefly mentioned in the welcome book, a facility like this really warrants a dedicated telephone line and both dine in and takeaway menus in each accommodation. For the reasons mentioned earlier this facility really should be promoted with more vigour. That aside everything you come to expect at Finlakes.... simply outstanding.

Visited The Retreat restaurant in Chudleigh whilst on holiday with friends this weekend. The meal was lovely and we all thoroughly enjoyed our food, at a reasonable price, with lots of choice on the menu (burgers, fajitas, beef/gammon steaks, fish and chips etc). Service was excellent, especially as we were a large table of 11 people! The only thing I would say though is that the drinks sold at the bar in the restaurant were rather high. Nonetheless it was lovely, here are a few snaps of our food

Lovely food, classic pub grub but done well and reasonably priced. Liver was excellently cooked, slightly pink and soft and packed full of flavour. Service was good, we were checked back on, meals came promptly and cleared when finished. Nice cold wine and kids meals substantial for the price! Only marked down one star as bar is always busy (not a bad thing), but just makes it sometimes awkward leaning over drinkers to order food. However, always highly recommended for both food and drinks.

We came for Sunday carvery when we visited Dawlish. The food was good, although the beef was a bit chewy. The Yorkshire puddings were huge. Service was quick and friendly and the Covid-19 set up was good. We would return if we came back to the area.

Bovey Castle is certainly a beautiful and interesting location. However, with all their grounds parking spaces are a premium. Eventually, we were offered a space in a coned off area. A very well appointed building as your would expect for a Five Star Hotel. We began with an aperitif 'Gusbourne English Sparkling' which was superb. A absolutely delightful bar. Smith's Brasserie! Well, let's begin with the positives. Excellent welcome and staff were fantastic throughout our Birthday lunch. Extremely unimaginative menu to say the least. A nice enough starter. Perhaps would have expected freshly made mayonnaise, not from a bottle, in such an establishment. Pleasant enough bottle of rose, although there was a choice of ONE. My wife (Birthday Girl) and I opted for pasta dishes. Absolutely clueless when it comes to pasta dishes. Packet spaghetti with prawns (four small ones) and a Provencal sauce? Very little of it too. It is an Italian dish and the sauce requires mixing in the pasta. Tagliatelle, again from a packet, with some type of utterly non-descript cream sauce at the bottom of the dish. Totally unseasoned dishes. The cooking water needs to taste of the sea. Therefore, seasoned. No offer of cheese or pepper or pangrattato, nothing, and certainly no theatre. Huge improvements required I'm afraid to make an enjoyable dining experience. Dress Code: Expectations, as you would imagine were high. Staff were smart, but could have been better attired for such a hotel. Clientele: Lots of jeans and un-ironed tee shirts wondering around and dining. A pair of football shorts and dirty trainers at one table, others with feet on the chairs in the bar and the final straw was a couple arriving in towelling dressing gowns and flip flops. NO! Sorry. There's a time and a place and this is not acceptable. Unfortunately, this was a lunch to judge if a weekend stay would be appropriate for our anniversary and it simply is not good enough.

It's a pretty standard coffee shop, nothing particularly remarkable about it but the staff are reasonably friendly and service is usually fast. However it is very busy and noisy! I've always enjoyed the drinks here, although the coffee is pretty average and you can definitely get better tasting drinks elsewhere. Whenever I've sat in though, there has been a constant stream of people that come in just to use the toilet and then walk out leaving the door open (and sometimes shaking their wet hands all over the place), so there is a bit of a smell. It's not really the fault of the store but it is off-putting.
