We brought our grandson here after visiting the castle. he had the child's chicken and skinny chips plus juice whilst us adults enjoyed tea, and the fish dishes of the day. All was attractively served without having long to wait. Sensible prices which made our meals good value. Plenty of choice on the menu. Ample parking adjacent to the farm shop & cafe.

I booked in for 4 of us to enjoy afternoon tea. I booked way in advance and paid the required £10 deposit. Upon arrival we were shown to the table already laid. The service was quite average, being grunted at by a young waitress when I asked for a cold drink as I didn’t drink hot drinks. Anyway some time later, they brought the afternoon tea out which looked lovely however there was only a fruit scone provided - 2 of us don’t like raisins so I asked for it to be swapped to a plain one only to be told they had sold out that morning. I expressed that I wasn’t very happy and that I felt that bookings should have had priority and they should have been kept back. Jasmin came over extremely apologetic and went above and beyond to make us feel happy with the experience. She got the kitchen staff to find gluten free plain scones and brought those out for us. She honestly turned our experience around! The rest of the afternoon was lovely and because of Jasmin, we will be returning. Thank you.

Walked in from Exminster, expecting to have a "light lunch" mid walk. Found a shaded table and ordered a ploughmans and a mushroom burger. Everything came quickly, and food was fresh and delicious. My ploughmans came with so much lovely yarg that I took about half home, even after giving my husband a little of it. Unlike most ploughmans this came with generous salads and ( hooray) a choice of bread, including granary. So much nicer than one choice of white baguette. Very filling and enjoyable, especially as we have no need of cooking dinner when we get home as too full! Amazed to see poor reviews on here, we will definitely recommend. Only comment is that as we arrived on foot we couldn't find the cafe and had to ask in the shop so another sign might be helpful.

Hosting my Mother and her lifelong schoolfriend to lunch after a visit to the Castle. Very disappointing meal with faults in all three dishes ordered. House Baked Ham (ham, egg and chips). Two fried eggs were like rubber and the pot of Picalili had a dark dry crust on it (clearly too long sitting under a heat lamp). Very small portion of ham, compared with similar establishments. Fried eggs were replaced when I raised the issue but the meal was spoilt. Open Westcountry Rare Roast Beef Sandwich. The beef was far from rare. It was over-cooked, grey and as tough as old boots. I was embarrassed that such a shocking meal had been served to our guest. Chicken Caesar Salad. Whole salad was drenched in a cheap "caesar" dressing. Made the whole dish almost inedible. So, three very disappointing dishes. Oh, and the Disabled Car Parking was further from the door than a large number of other, occupied, car parking spaces, across a rough gravel area. Our guest struggled to negotiate the gravel with a wheeled walking aid. Why not designate the closest spaces for Disabled use, as all other establishments do?

This used to be a firm favourite of ours for decades. Good food, reasonably priced. It changed management sometime ago and we were disappointed twice. I nearly didn’t go again. But I decided to give it another try today. Not impressed. Expensive food. Quite tasteless too. Hardly anyone was there. It used to be crowded all the time whatever the day of the week. Sadly I think this is now not going to be a place to visit. I believe it’s the same people who run the Mill at Otterton. Another place that used to be wonderful and now isn’t. Both places are in great locations so will always get people visiting. But my guess is - like us - that if one lives locally it’s a big NO to return to. Hugely disappointing

The café and farm shop were always a good place to eat and then do some shopping. The place seems to have lost its way. Deserted of customers. The bakery simply ignoring to two customers trying to be served. No other customers in the shop at all. The veg quality has declined so we did not purchase. Such a pity until recently a lovely place for meal and then to the farm shop for what was quality goods.

We booked a birthday breakfast. The quality was great and the quantity was ample. We had variations on a cooked breakfast. The sausage was meaty and the puddings (hog and black) were tasty. They were served with thyme flavoured mushrooms. Others had smoked salmon with eggs and the portions were generous. It is some years since we were last here and the new owners have maintained the standard. The setting is special: the bistro is in view of Powderham Castle and a herd of Fallow Deer.

Lovely staff , food was good , we had to wait a short while for the food but that was understandable as it was a Saturday lunchtime and very busy . Best chips that I’ve had in a long time . Beautiful original art work on the walls . Only down side was the overbearingly large photograph of horses and hounds , as hunting is now illegal I don’t think it’s appropriate or in good taste . Apart from that it was great

Had a lovely meal at Powderham Farm Shop Bistro..bit confusing as all of the tables were reserved, but they managed to fit us in by the very drafty double doors, so everytime people went in or out the cold air came in. I would have given this place a lot higher score but their ladies toilets were really bad..they smelt of urine, the floors were dirty and the pipes behind the toilet looked horrid, goodness knows what was on them.....they need a good clean...the radiator in the toilet was all rusty...you would expect better than this at Powderham Castle...the ladies toliets need a re vamp desperately.

Have used this restaurant for many years and have never been disappointed even though there have been staffing issues over the years with long delays etc,but have always been well treated and some of the waiting staff know us as we always tip and thank them for a good meal. However saturday 6th january was different, was very quiet and had someone on the till we had not seen before,my wife went up to order as per norm and ordered 2 full breakfasts and drinks but was told we were too late by 8 minutes,we explained there had been an accident on the maldon hill and we were delayed but she was having none of it. What we struggle with is that you serve a bacon, sausage or egg bap so what trouble is it to do a few mushrooms and beans etc,as you have the grills on etc,we feel very upset as we have supported this business for many many years and feel if you wont help local loyal customers you dont deserve our custom and hard earned cash. Is it just my businesses that bend over backwards to help customers and after 40 years I would still do it everyday.

Met up with a couple of friends for lunch. From looking at other peoples plates I was really looking forward to trying the food, but, it was really disappointing. My meal was pigs in blankets on ciabatta with a small bowl of Burts crisps, for £16 it was very overpriced and didn’t come out hot. My wife had a Turkey Roast and again it wasn’t hot and the gravy served on the side was actually cold. On the plus side the latte I had was very nice.

Ordered tea and a fruit scone. The scone arrived but had probably been dead for two days. They are not supposed to be reduced to a crumbled mess when cutting in half. Difficult to spread butter on a pile of crumbs. Seated next to a door that opened out to the outside. Every time people decided to leaved using that door, a gale swept in and froze me to the spot. Why have a table next to a door that opens to the exterior when it's not the main entrance. It should locked. This is not a cheap place when not comes to the cost. Poor.

I cannot believe the difference in just a few weeks. We used to be regular customers until a couple of years ago, when the place was changed around, and the old staff disappeared. We've had a couple of breakfasts over the past couple of months and the last one, was certainly an improvement. We went for lunch today and it was perfect. The staff were excellent as was the food. Paying at the counter also helps as do the lots of other minor differences. Certainly we will be going back a lot more often now. We did also visit the shop and that has dramatically changed for the better. Well done the new owners.

Not as good as it once was. I have visited this bistro on a number of occasions over 5-6 -years, usually with friends and had always found the food and service to be excellent. Apparently it has recently been taken over and this was my/our first visit since then. I'm sorry to say we were disappointed. Firstly, there is now no initial table visit to take orders and one has to order from a menu sheet and order and pre-pay at the counter. Retrograde. We both ordered the Farmer's breakfast. It looked very much like the Baker beans had been microwaved on the plate and the sausage tasted dry and overcooked, yet was not even browned. Retrograde. The mushrooms weren't great and the entire breakfasts were only warm, not as though they had been freshly cooked and brought immediately to our table. Retrograde. The only positive was the slice of toast which was ok as were the drinks.

Good produce brunch let down by very poor service. Waitress was abrupt regarding my request for my poached eggs to be neither too runny nor too firm. She puckered her lips and sighed, could not understand why as it seemed reasonable to want my eggs as I like them. Waited a long time for food to arrive though it was not very busy, this was not a problem. Though I was disapponted that my request for lemon rather than milk was overlooked despite the order being checked. After waiting once again I went to the bar to collect the lemon myself. When it arrived another waitress picked up a slice by hand and put it on a saucer. Really astonished that she had not been taught to use tongs and quite revolted by her long finger nails handling it The smoked salmon was good quality and there was plenty of it. The eggs were obviously proper free range but were rock hard after my request. No hollandaise sauce was available as I was told this was the head chef's decision. Sounded bizarre as even Weatherspoons provide it with smoked salmon and poached eggs. What a pity to ruin good quality produce this way

Lunch today was awful. We had two meals from the specials board. The hake meal I had was over powered by the taste of the ham and white sauce. It was very sickly and did not allow for the flavour of the hake to be tasted. I tried to eat as much as possible but I had to stop. It was the worst meal I've had for a long time. My husband had the steak pie. The parsnips were soggy and very soft. The gravy was so strong it was terrible. So disappointed because we enjoyed our previous visit and the surroundings and staff were lovely. We booked a table for early Sunday lunch. My friend was celebrating his 93rd birthday so when I booked I asked if they could bring us a cup cake with a single candle when we ordered coffee. They said NO, they had no candles. Puzzling. Is this due to Covid? Or Brexit stopping import of candles? They had produced a lit candle on a previous birthday occasion. From the very limited menu we chose the special (hake) and a roast. My friend had the hake, which he pronounced good. My roast consisted of 3 thin slices of anaemic-looking meat, presumably pork (since that is what I ordered) but I could not have told from the taste. No crackling which a pork roast should always have. The gravy was standard generic (designed to go with any meat). There was a square slab of stuffing and a standard slice of Yorkshire pudding, probably from a catering pack. Plates were slightly warm, not hot, and quickly became cold long before we had finished the meal. The waitresses (2 young girls) were eager to help and friendly but evidently had received no training. Why would you ask the customer if they wanted desert when you had no desert menu and had not been briefed with what the choices were? Why (after going away to check) would you offer chocolate or strawberry ice-cream only for the chef to emerge 5 minutes later to say they had run out of strawberry flavour? Don't they check before lunch? Don't they brief the staff what is available? Why would you serve the coffee 5 minutes before bringing the desert? So all in all a disappointment though they did say when we settled the bill that they had given us a discount because it was a birthday celebration, so thanks are due for that.

The handle inside was hanging off, toilet paper and paper hand towels stuffed between the pipes. Water tap very rusty and hard to turn on . We decided to have lunch at the Orangerie for our 53rd wedding anniversary. Again - what a disappointment. We were shown to a table but only given a wine and drinks menu. After 20 minutes we had to complain to one of the staff, that we seemed to be being ignored. We did order from the very restricted menu and by the time the food arrived, we had been at the table for 45 minutes. The staff (of which there seemed plenty) had no organisation at all. Our table had not been cleaned and we shared it with a dead fly.I opted for the Vegan Super Curry. When it arrived, the plate had curry splashed on the rim and the papadum had puddles of fat in it. The curry itself was tasteless and I left over half of it.My wife went for the fish and chips. That arrived with dried up marrowfat peas and apparently, there was not a lot of taste to the fish - and they don't remove the skin. The batter was thick and gloopy. My wife left over half of her meal too.For drinks, I had a Luscombe ginger beer which was nice - my wife ordered a Diet Coke. When it arrived, it was a 200ml mini bottle (price £1.95).We did complain to the young girl at the till. She was full of apologies and said that the food was down to kitchen staff shortages. (It might have been a good idea to use one of the many staff serving). This young lady was the best thing about the visit as she seemed to care. She did give us a staff discount.Living locally, we used to use the Orangerie at least twice a week. The place then changed hands and was renovated. Why oh why did they try to fix it when it wasn't broken.Sadly, I can't see us going back. And we weren't the only ones complaining.

Come on Orangery, we were once very regular diners, we always knew where to come for a perfect breakfast or fab lunch, however our last few visits in June have been very poor and we will not return to eat! (Coffees always great, so we will return to drink!)Sourdough with avocado, eggs and bacon...... sourdough was bread not toasted, lack of avocado and what was there had soaked into the untoasted bread, eggs were boiled dry (all 4 of them), not poached, bacon undercooked. We did complain and staff very kindly discounted the bill..... so we tried again today thinking this was a one off! This time 4 of us had breakfast baps, I would add that usually in the past they were amazing, not now! Sausages so dry they were likely cooked up very early, possibly day before and refrigerated (cheap sausages would have given more justice), eggs again hard boiled, not an ounce of oozing yolk, baps boring - dry and would guess from frozen, this isn't anywhere near the quality of the breakfast baps of old, no point using quality ingredients if not used/served right. Butter would have helped with the dryness but sadly no butter on the baps either! In closing, as always, the staff are amazing, the older staff are fabulous and a credit to you. Ange served us fantastically and Nikki did knockout lattes! In fact the best Smashed Avocado we had ever had in the past (and we've had many) was prepared by Naomi.Three poor meals in succession, we won't be chancing a fourth!

The staff are so rude!! No customer care at all. Soup came out not even tepid warm. Wrong bread. When told staff member said well they didn't do it deliberately! Stood for quite a few minutes waiting to be seated. Was totally ignored by 3 members of staff whilst being looked at as they finished their conversation. Made me feel very awkward, staff were so rude & obviously think customers are beneath them. For the expense this place is a definite no go. I did message the cafe on their Web site & have given them 14 days to reply. To date I have heard nothing. As a local I urge you to take a picnic & don't spend your money here!

Was very disappointed with meal. Two of us had fish and chips. The batter was very hard and dark brown (overcooked) and fish was dried out in some places and watery in others. The third person chose tuna filled jacket potato which looked as if it had been cooking since day before. Salad was limp and full of grit! Stick to the pastries in the cafe!

Bring local we have regularly visited The Orangery , this time was not so good due to unpleasant customer service . The week before we ordered hot food and as we were on the benches on the grass we’re told it had to be take away , that was all fine , no problem , the food was brought to us in take away boxes , all good …. BUT yesterday when I went to order and to say we were on the benches on the grass just outside I was told very curtly that we could only have sandwiches and no hot food , when I explained we had had hot food the week earlier the server huffed and said she would have to ask the kitchen , she made me feel as though I was a real nuisance. She came back and said yes we could have the burgers etc , but was not friendly at all. The food came after a fair wait , my husband loved the burger , no complaints , but the burger was meant to be served with chunky chips and garnish , the chips were thin and were from frozen . The chips at the Orangery used to be the absolute best . The burger and chips were served in foil. , it cost £10 plus for that . I won’t be going back for a while I think . Not sure what has happened as the food and service was always fab .

Very disappointed visit last week whilst on holiday. The restaurant and menu looked very appealing so was sorry to report the food quality not. My quiche was rock hard but worse was my husband’s fish and chips. The batter looked fine but the fish was full of water certainly not fresh. Spoke to the lady who allocated our table and she said she would tell the chef but that was it. Unable to eat the fish was left and he just ate a few chips and bread and butter. When we tried to explain to the manager at the till she was extremely defensive and spoke to us like we were con artists after a free meal. She reluctantly agreed not to charge for the fish” on this occasion” however there was no apology.

Hard Eggs and dry vegetarian hash! My partner went for the veggie Hash bowl and was disappointed! He had a pile of dry vegetables with chips! Not at all what he expected for breakfast! Not normally a fussy eater but without my beans he wouldn’t have been able to eat and he left half! He just wanted a normal veggie sausage mushrooms tomatoes and egg! We can’t even return because they don’t do a normal break fast! Shame, mine was fine be accept for solid hard eggs! Venue is lovely and service good!

My wife and I were regulars at the Orangerie before lockdown and this morning, decided to see what it was like. When things are not broken, why fix them. The first part of the room has been taken up by big armchairs and sofas and the extended bar also cuts down on the tables. As a result, the tables are all cramped up one end. My wife was constantly battered by the man in the chair behind. Every time he moved, it jarred her chair. The tables are just too close. The other problem with all of the tables being down one end is that it is so noisy. It always was with bare brick walls and hard floor but it does seem worse now. There are also 'One Way' signs on the floor but they take you so close to diners at the tables, they might as well not be there. We ordered cappuccinos and a toasted teacake. The teacake never did arrive and the apology for this, didn't feel as though it was meant. On the positive side, the breakfasts we saw, did look nice.We both felt so disappointed at the 'update'. Again, if things aren't broken, why fix them.

Lovely powderham beef burgers supplied by their farm shop for two. I chose to have filthy fries with mine. They were described as topped with chilli and cheese. It didn't even occur to me that it was beef chilli, I just assumed chilli, jalapeño, scotch bonnet.... I hate kidney beans! Chips themselves were great though.Plenty of space outside on a sunny day. Staff polite and prompt. It's a few weeks till we can eat inside again but I think I'd still eat outside there.

Waiting for at least 5 minutes waiting to see if a table was available. One employee didn’t even look up from behind the till, another waitress walked passed me and looked me directly in the eye more than once and didn’t even acknowledge I was there! Ended up giving them a piece of my mind and walking out. That’s basic customer service skills. I don’t mind waiting, but you’re not too busy to acknowledge your customers and tell them you’ll be with them shortly... won’t be coming back.

We decided to come here for breakfast as recently recommended by friends. Two of our party had the basic cooked breakfast and I decided to have scrambled egg and bacon. The breakfasts were OK nothing special and bland. The scrambled egg I found very distasteful, lack of egg consistency and completely overloaded with butter. You get given two half’s of toast on the side which isn’t enough with the portion of scrambled egg. Why not just do proper scrambled egg on toast with two slices of bread? If it wasn’t for the bread I would’ve sent my breakfast back it looked liked old school dinners when they’ve been thrown back up. Not impressed. Also tea was too weak and coffee tasted disgusting. I also noticed that tables reserved already had the juice, butter and preserves out ready but one or two tables weren’t reserved till 12 that’s a long time for these items to be sitting on the side for. I won’t be returning in a hurry and certainly wouldn’t recommend as I feel there is better value for money elsewhere.

3 of us decided to treat ourselves to a Sunday lunch at The Orangery Restaurant, Powderham It was awful. To kick off, 1of the glasses had to be returned as it wasn't cleaned properly. At the top of the glass, crumbs or other food debris was apparent on the ridge of the glass. The seasonal veg were practically raw and obviously cooked in a microwave & inedible. The dinner was served on cold plates. Needless to say we didn't stay for desert or coffee. This restaurant has gone down hill dramatically since our last visit. If the dinner wasn't bad enough it appears dogs are permitted within the dining area. I am a dog owner myself and would never dream of allowing it to enter a restaurant where other diners were present and eating. I noticed when1of the diners with their dog was settling their bill their dog was standing table height and shook itself vigorously next to a family eating their dinner. In my opinion this is totally unhygienic for the diners sat on that table. Dog hair or worse could have easily settled on their plate. Yuk. I was beginning to ask myself if I was eating in a restaurant or a kennel. There were 3 dogs present when I visited. We shall not be visiting this establishment again. If I could offer a no star I would do so. . I did tell the main man who I assume was the Manager that the vegetables were raw and microwaved. So the bottom line I wouldn't recommend this restaurant there are plenty others within a stones throw.

We have been before whilst on holiday, and loved it so much we came back this time. The food was very nice but not as amazing as we remembered. The service felt a little rushed and we were pressured into making the order even though we had literally just sent the first waitress away to give us more time. The specials board was impossible to read, the writing was (partly) illegible. That being said, the lamb curry, beef pie and warm goats cheese salad were delicious, the lemon meringue pie was a big disappointment. It won’t stop us returning but must confess to being a little disappointed.

I have been to The Dolphin Inn several times now and the staff are always very friendly and welcoming. There are homemade traditional pies and roasts offered on Sundays, and bar snacks during the week. I had forgotten my scarf and Sam had very kindly looked after it for me. I wish them a very happy and successful 2020!

Amazing level of service from one of the ladies at The Ridge Café. I want to thank the member of staff who offered and brought out to the car park, our order to me and my two rescue dogs, one of which, new to us, is very nervous following traumatic times in recent years. It was raining but this lady absolutely wanted to do it, and the dogs were able to meet her - one was enthusiastic and the new boy just looked puzzled, probably wondering who was so kind to bring out this meal to us. It was great, gentle, exposure for ‘new boy’ and a highlight for me too. I’m sorry that I don’t have the lady’s name but she was so good, thank you!

We was on a pub tour of the area and passed this on a way to another pub and thought “oh this looks quaint” sometimes the most impromptu pubs are the best and this one certainly is! Four ales were on draft we opted for the salcombe gold Which was excellently kept. I loved the laid back atmosphere with dog friendly sofas. They have a beautiful boxer dog named boots who greets you on arrival who is loving in nature with people and dogs. Very chilled and dog friendly and I will certainly visit again and stay for longer when I’m next in the area. Whatpub online does not hype this place is much as it should.
