What has happened ? We visited regulary last year whilst down here on holiday. We have one local to me but the service here was incredible in comparison. However, we visited last week as we are back down on holiday and it was awful. Rude staff, shop was dirty. Toilets smelt awful and the coffee was bitter. Such a shame.

Very unwelcoming visit. The lady who served me seemed to really not like her job or her customers. I asked for two food items by the ingredients ie mushroom and emmental etc and she kept rolling her eyes at me. I received another eye roll for asking for my americano and hot milk, extra hot. The ironic thing was it was served to me with fridge cold milk 😂. The two lads were much better, they were respectful and polite to me and other customers. Such a shame as the place used to feel like a good independent coffee house (I know it isn’t one), but it now feels like a low-end budget chain. Not a pleasant place to enjoy a coffee and I won’t go back. It’s not cheap, but the experience is. I hope management take this onboard.

We usually go in here every Saturday we're up in the town. Definitely for coffee sometimes lunch. This Saturday 3/2/24 it was abit busy but I got an empty table easily downstairs as upstairs was shut off. All the tables had dirty dishes on. But the 3 staff behind working were all talking & not working the queue was out the door. It took us 30 mins just to get served & I removed the dirty dishes from my table as the man that did empty some didn't do them all. There was a few people saw the queue & just walked away.

I found the cafe looked very tired. The service was slow. Most of the staff didn’t engage with customers and seemed more interested in talking to each other. Coffee and chocolate brownie were both good but I won’t be going back. My experience at the Exeter Coffee 1 is far superior.

Not a great day for staff. Very poor attitude and sub-par experience. Muttering under their breath, and made sitting in a very poor experience. Huffed when asked to replace a tea mug which had a tea mark in the bottom, as well as 2 knives which had some food residue on. Left off teaspoons as well as milk. Not a smile in sight. Normally I would not have cared for a smile, but the hostile expression made us feel very unwelcome. This was nearly 2 hours before close. Hungover perhaps?

Went in yesterday on the Sunday, the staff made my experience really unpleasant. I felt really uncomfortable and for someone who suffers with anxiety in shops like these, they really made me unsettled. With their “under the breath” comments, the eye rolling. The cutlery they gave me was dirty, and when asked to swap for another one they huffed and made out it was such a chore. At the end of the day i was treated to a coffee by my mum and they actually ruined it. The three staff that was in there was quite young and had absolutely next to none, very poor customer service… on what they showed anyway. Sonya usually serves me and she is lovely, not use to this type of rudeness from a coffee shop, where it isn’t cheap either. It’s not hard to put on a small smile, and I understand everyone has bad days but the job really isn’t that hard. There is a level of professionalism when working, and also if you are having a bad day do not take it out on others as you don’t know what they are going through! Manners cost nothing. Really disappointed and it has given me further anxiety to wanting to go back in there. Not one to usually write reviews but it really did stay with me, and something definitely needs to change as it wasn’t fair on anyone.

Pitiful. They had run out of teapots so I got a tea bag in a cup. It was only half full when I removed the tea bag so I went back for a top up. No milk pourers either so we both got milk in espresso cups which don’t pour at all. The table was dirty and had to be cleared by ourselves and I made the mistake of visiting the toilet. Seriously bad. Thick dust on pipe work that has not come overnight. The whole set up was a shambles and very expensive for what we got. Will not be returning.

Please have a word with your lazy staff. Apparently the dishwasher was broken- so they were using disposables for ALL drinks PLUS lids for every order (for health and safety- just wash the cups!!) Three people on shift, with one on washing up. Seems they could only bring themselves to wash the few plates and the odd bit of cutlery. It wasn't that busy, but most people were having to clear the tables to be able to sit down. Really bad show. Have a word with your staff. Other people in the queue were also astonished at the disposable attitude.

Shocking service! Had to queue for over 10 minutes with no urgency shown from lady taking orders. We ordered a toasted tea cake to share and two coffees to eat in. Coffees came in paper cups which smelt, and toasted tea cake arrived in a paper bag with a flimsy wooden knife and melted butter portions. When I asked for a plate, the man who served us literally threw a couple of large plates onto the table with no words. Felt like they think they’re so popular that they don’t need to aim for the most basic of service and friendliness. Won’t be returning!!

I visited again a few days ago, hoping that it would have improved. Unfortunately not, it looks even more run down and unwelcoming. It needs a deep clean and a smasten up. The chairs look old, grubby and uninviting. When my coffee was kindly brought over to me as I am disabled, it was partially spilt in the saucer. The butter packets had been laid on the toasted teacake, so I ended up pouring melted butter on it. I would so like to see this branch brought back up to standard again as I used to really love going in there for coffee and an almond croissant.

This coffee shop is beyond tired. Needs a good deep clean.Needs renovation and new equipment ie teapots that are not chipped around the spout( health and hygiene issue) ceramic all crazed, cups seen better days and clearly not enough saucers,as provided with one drink,l purchased 2! Disgustingly black mop stood up by a table opposite the customer toilet which quite frankly a) shouldn't be on view and b) worthy of no more than the bin! Customer toilet....VILE!! No toilet tissue, toilet tissue strewn around the floor, urine stains all over the pan and toilet seat and the smell was awful. I have always been a fan of Coffee#1 in Newton Abbot, but no more....the Exeter shop is far superior on all levels. Perhaps the area manager needs to review this shop.

Lovely and very polite staff : ) The apple drink isn't what I expected at all, and it wasn't to my taste but it was still nice, I asked if I could put some milk into it and the lovely lady behind the coffee machine said it would not mix very well as it's more like a hot juice drink. I think she saw that I didn't know what to do, (even tho it was nice just not to my taste!) But she offered me another drink instead which was much appreciated!!! We tend to use coffee shops quite a lot, and often the experience is rather average. This place, however, is fabulous. Far better than the usual chains, and despite being majority owned by Nero these days it hasn’t gone downhill, as I suspected it would. Whether that’s just because the staff are brilliant- they are- or because Nero have been sensible enough to leave them alone to get on with it, who knows- but this is the best coffee shop experience you’re ever likely to get. Highly recommended.

Very eclectic seating that look and feel as though they came from several different house clearances.Whatever atmosphere there was became drowned out by the muzak, the volume of which is in keeping with so many coffee shops now...SO DARNED LOUD you have to shout to hold any form of conversation. Who is it for? The staff I reckon 'cos the customers don't need it SO LOUD!I think the most annoying thing was that I had to clear the table from previous customers before I could sit down...all the tables had some form of detritus and crockery on them. The toilet was in a bit if a state. The staff are still brusque and I queued for around 10 mins to be served. I ordered homity pie which was advertised as coming with salad garnish and crisps. When it arrived I had my homity pie with no salad garnish and a total of 5 crisps in a tiny pot. When I queried this I was advised abruptly that they had run out of salad. I pointed out that £4.50 for a pie measuring approx 3 inches across and 5 crisps was not great value and that I had been expecting salad. I was advised that the salad was complimentary so I couldn't expect it. The attitude was very much how dare I complain and be grateful for what I've got. Newton Abbot has many very good and good value independent coffee shops so I will be taking my custom there in future and would advise others to do the same.

Has the feel of another chain of coffee shops , not your traditional homely feel that I enjoy in a coffee shop

This is a overpriced coffee shop, no waitress service and can be cold in the winter as the windows leave it open to the elements. Most of the staff are young, with little in the way of customer . care skills.

Great prices, half the price of various other coffee shops in town, very nice coffee and cakes, the staff seem nice however a little disorganised, wasn't sure if there was a system for serving people - overall great value for money so will return.

Forget the major chains down the road, this is worth a try if you want a decent coffee in comfortable surroundings. It's very central so can get busy but has a great atmosphere. It also scores in summer by being able to open the large front windows so is light and airy.

Visited here today, it was quiet. There was 1 guy in front of me, three members of staff behind the counter and it took me 18 mins to get served???Very slow...lots of staff not really doing much. Disorganised. Coffee was ok but overpriced and not worth queuing for.

A regular haunt of mine, v tasty coffee, great food, good service, free no hassle wifi, nice decor, good atmosphere. I'm really fussy & IMO this the best Newton Abbot has to offer, I've tried most of them. Highly recommended.

Great coffee and a good selection of cakes! A way to spend a Saturday morning to chat, read or just watch the world go by if you sit in the window. Always excellent for money and lovely staff!

Called here whilst on a trip to Newton Abbot. Took advantage of the good weather and sat outside. Excellent coffee and selection of cakes. Very reasonably priced for such quality. I must mention the 2 buskers nearby - they were excellent.

Not the greatest Chai Latte i have ever tasted. Nice place and nice mugs no silly saucers like a lot of Coffee Shops. Would go again, might try a different drink next time.

I am a regular visitor to coffee #1. I always find the staff helpful, especially when I am with my baby. The choice of products is staggering, and the specials each month I love! I love the mix of furniture and the way the windows open in the summer. This is definitely the place for coffee lovers. The only suggestions....make the cocolilly permanent and keep the toilets a tad cleaner.

Really Helpful barista, Erin, I think. I had a complicated and large order, and she awesomely smashed it! Shells has great handwriting!

Lovely food, classic pub grub but done well and reasonably priced. Liver was excellently cooked, slightly pink and soft and packed full of flavour. Service was good, we were checked back on, meals came promptly and cleared when finished. Nice cold wine and kids meals substantial for the price! Only marked down one star as bar is always busy (not a bad thing), but just makes it sometimes awkward leaning over drinkers to order food. However, always highly recommended for both food and drinks.

Bovey Castle is certainly a beautiful and interesting location. However, with all their grounds parking spaces are a premium. Eventually, we were offered a space in a coned off area. A very well appointed building as your would expect for a Five Star Hotel. We began with an aperitif 'Gusbourne English Sparkling' which was superb. A absolutely delightful bar. Smith's Brasserie! Well, let's begin with the positives. Excellent welcome and staff were fantastic throughout our Birthday lunch. Extremely unimaginative menu to say the least. A nice enough starter. Perhaps would have expected freshly made mayonnaise, not from a bottle, in such an establishment. Pleasant enough bottle of rose, although there was a choice of ONE. My wife (Birthday Girl) and I opted for pasta dishes. Absolutely clueless when it comes to pasta dishes. Packet spaghetti with prawns (four small ones) and a Provencal sauce? Very little of it too. It is an Italian dish and the sauce requires mixing in the pasta. Tagliatelle, again from a packet, with some type of utterly non-descript cream sauce at the bottom of the dish. Totally unseasoned dishes. The cooking water needs to taste of the sea. Therefore, seasoned. No offer of cheese or pepper or pangrattato, nothing, and certainly no theatre. Huge improvements required I'm afraid to make an enjoyable dining experience. Dress Code: Expectations, as you would imagine were high. Staff were smart, but could have been better attired for such a hotel. Clientele: Lots of jeans and un-ironed tee shirts wondering around and dining. A pair of football shorts and dirty trainers at one table, others with feet on the chairs in the bar and the final straw was a couple arriving in towelling dressing gowns and flip flops. NO! Sorry. There's a time and a place and this is not acceptable. Unfortunately, this was a lunch to judge if a weekend stay would be appropriate for our anniversary and it simply is not good enough.

We came for Sunday carvery when we visited Dawlish. The food was good, although the beef was a bit chewy. The Yorkshire puddings were huge. Service was quick and friendly and the Covid-19 set up was good. We would return if we came back to the area.
