Read about this place in MCN so stopped off when in the area for lunch on a Monday. Unfortunately it failed to live up to reports. Food expensive for what it is, not great quality and slow to arrive despite there only being a dozen people in the cafe. Staff just about managed to talk to customers. Probably better when more bikers about but otherwise I wouldn't bother going back. Should be interesting when the new Caffine and Machine on the other side of the road opens later in the month and provides some competition.

I recently visited The Roebuck Inn with my partner for a special occasion—my birthday—and it was absolutely fantastic from start to finish. We started with the Spiced Lamb Cutlet, which was perfectly cooked and bursting with flavor. For mains, we had the Specialty Lamb Madras and the Spiced Salmon, both of which were exquisite. Every bite was a delight!
To make the evening even more memorable, the staff surprised us with a complimentary birthday cake, which was such a thoughtful touch. The wine selection was excellent, and the service was truly brilliant—attentive, friendly, and made us feel so welcome.
The Roebuck is a gem, and I can’t recommend it enough. Whether for a special occasion or just a great meal out, this is the place to go.
Even though breakfast and dinner was part of our plan for an extended business stay, after dinning a few times and trying numerous items, we chose to go into town and pay to dine elsewhere. We are very budget consequence, to not eat a free meal and purchase food elsewhere says a lot about how disappointed we were with the food. The quality of ingredients was poor and there was a holistic lack of flavor.
At times the food at dinner was presented well, picture perfect; however, the meat would be over cooked, the food was poorly seasoned, the soups were literally the worst soups I have ever eaten in my life. That says a lot as I do not think I have ever had a soup I did not like before trying the soups here.
Breakfast consisted of traditional English breakfast using poor quality ingredients, runny yogurt, fruit from tins and lots of processed breads and cheap baked items. They did have a few small containers of nuts that you could use as a topping for the yogurt or your cereal. Service was slow, our tea/coffee would come out after we had finished our meal.
The one strong positive thing that I can write is that they genuinely seemed to care if people had allergies to any ingredients on their menu.
The staff tried but they were mostly young and poorly trained.
I was really excited to try this after seeing all the stuff on social media.. however, really disappointed food was average - we ordered started and it come out with our tapas - we had asked separately, took about 20 mins to get drinks , service was slow and not the most friendliest. Another friend had a similar experience here. Looks lovely with the decor but overrated.
Came across this after taking grandchildren on Watercress Line.Lovely roast dinner for only £7.50 , a Weds special, tasty welsh rarebit too. Reasonable prices.
Over priced microwave food. We ordered ‘oven’ warmed bread for the table, it came out served on a platter on top of a black paper serviette, because it had clearly been warmed in the microwave the moisture meant the serviette had actually stuck to the bread. The rest of the food that came out was more worthy of a weatherspoons rather than a hotel
Restaurant. The prices they are charging for dessert you would expect something pretty special but for £9.50 my husband got a very soggy apple crumble tart clearly just warmed in the microwave. When we were asked if everything was ok and we commented it was alright for microwave food not one of the staff denied it. Would not eat here again.
Service gone downhill.
Dont clean the tables or remove dirty cups promptly.
They dont bring your order to table, no service, very poor. Cups of coffee have shrunk in size. Will not have coffee there again.
However purchased a loaf of bread which was excellent.
One of the best special Chow Meins I’ve ever had from a Chinese takeaway. Comes in a large round container and tastes delicious.
Their Special Curry is also very tasty!
A great location for a Tea Shop so close to the Cathedral and Winchester College. The tea room itself is quite quaint - just what you imagine it should be. A delightful place to catch up with an old friend for an Afternoon Tea.
Service alas, on our visit, was somewhat haphazard.
Afternoon Tea for two was duly ordered - unfortunately it appeared nothing like the photographs in their advertising. First the sandwich plate arrived - four thin finger sandwiches (two of which were egg, one salmon, one I can't remember), and a mound of dressed salad - way more than any garnish. Not quite what we expected.
Then came the cake plate - two (smallish) fruit scones, cream and jam, along with a slice of Battenburg cake, and a square of carrot cake and a cake of chocolate and Guinness cake. Both squares of cake were tiny. Problem - how to share 2 small cakes between two hungry ladies.
To be fair, the scones, cakes and jam were obviously home made and very delicious, but a taste is really all we got.
I've given a rating of Average for this place. This is because TA jumps from Average to Very Good. I believe their should be a Good.
Would I go again? Yes. I would like to try this place again even though I found it quite quirky. I probably wouldn't order Afternoon Tea though.
Would I recommend it to others? Yes, if I think they understand quaint and quirky.
Don’t waste your money. A couple of times now our food has arrived cold, soggy batter on the fish and onion rings, limp wet salad and an awful tasting burger. I received a phone call from someone who works there asking why I left a bad review on their website, so told them the reason why. The guy then got very rude with me and told me if I don’t like the food then go elsewhere which I now intend to do. Very poor customer service.
Been going here for 30 years. Usually go once a week. I have tried many different meals and have not had a bad one. Great service and lovely food. The best Chinese in Winchester.
Una señora grosera dirige esto, no es agradable para los niños y no tiene conciencia de los niños con necesidades especiales. Evite si tiene hijos, especialmente con necesidades adicionales.
I didn't really give this little cafe much of a trial today but really enjoyed my coffee in what felt like a safe and convivial environment. Well worth visiting to make sure this little escape place stays functioning.
