My first experience here.. Not somewhere I will rush back to 🫤. I love a Flat White, but get annoyed at paying £3.40 for what turns out to be a coffee with a little milk. Nothing rich or velvety about the drink served as it was so 'thin'! Really disappointing (& on the small side).

I have always found the staff at Costa to be friendly and helpful. Interesting to see that Costa is now a drag on Coca Cola corporation earnings after Whitbread made it so successful then sold the business to Coke for over £3.9bn. It is easy to see why. The coffee at Costa used to be one of the best from the chains, but it has gone steadily downhill along with the influx of sweet sticky cakes and pastries loaded with sugar and UPFs. A few months ago the coffee was nearly undrinkable - definitely improved again and now slightly above average, but still over roasted to mask cheaper beans. Hopefully the loss this year was a wake-up call and they’ll get better again.
We had a rather mixed visit here. Lovely setting, clean and welcoming. Top quality food. But the service was mixed which rather affected the pleasure of the visit. First, it is a very small menu. The server did not tell us that some items were not available until after we ordered. The joy of eating out is to chose and anticipate the meal. We like to chose starter and main that will flow well, and choose wine accordingly. So when we were informed after ordering that some items were not available, this was the first hurdle.
Then we ordered a French wine, and without any comment, a bottle of Chilean wine was brought. We had to query this.
Even worse when a second glass was ordered, it happened again, Chilean was brought again, despite checking with the server whether it really was the wine ordered. (It wasn't) So this had to be queried again.
The bill was also incorrect.
Whilst everyone was polite, this had the affect of putting us on edge, having to check everything, and left me feeling like a whingy customer. It's a shame for the chefs because the food really was special, and had the server and bar staff been up to that standard it would have been an amazing experience.
A very comfortable branch of Nero's. A good place to settle down if you have some work to do, a book to read, or to chat with friends. Will definitely be back.
Unfortunately, The Bakers Arms in Winchester falls short of expectations. The beer selection is uninspiring, with a lack of variety and little effort to offer anything beyond the most basic options. If you're hoping for a decent pint or something unique, you’ll likely leave disappointed.
However, the bigger issue is the overall atmosphere and customer service. There’s an unwelcoming feel to the place, with staff who seem disinterested at best and outright rude at worst. Rather than creating a warm, friendly environment, interactions often feel like you're inconveniencing them just by ordering a drink. It’s not the kind of place where you’d want to linger.
With so many great pubs in Winchester, there’s little reason to return to The Bakers Arms. A pub should be about more than just serving drinks—it should offer a welcoming experience, and sadly, this one misses the mark.
The best way to describe this pub is A museum set up by and insane victorian inventor. Where you get a free beer included in your entrance fee.
Great pub , great and friendly , hard working staff. Would recommend this pub to anyone. Too much for the eyes to look at, and too much for the mind to take in, on one visit.
I don’t like to leave bad reviews but unfortunately in this case I need to as I hope the owner can see this and react upon accordingly. We were on our way home around 8:30pm and thought we’d have a nice sausage and chips for our dinner. How disappointed were we? From the outside the shop looks ok but once you get in the place is filled with smoke ( it was like the extraction wasn’t on?) so instead of waiting for our order inside we went out and came back in 5 mins later. The young lady that served us was pleasant but the other staff just looked as they were in a youth club and messing about.
So we get home 10 mins later and eagerly want to tuck in and after the 8/9 layers of paper that wrapped them we had what we thought were generous portions of chips with our battered sausage. Well we were glad they were generous as the majority of them were stuck to the paper as they swimming in oil. Instantly from the first chip I thought that they had a peculiar taste and after a two more chips I had to put them in the bin! They had definitely been cooked in very old cooking oil as they had that bitterness to them. The battered sausage was like any other battered sausage so no complaints there.
