We arrived for our Sunday lunch today and were really warmly welcomed into the heart of your really wonderful pub. I was immediately handed a glass of red wine and shown to our table. The service is brilliant (I even tried to poach one of the staff!) and although the pub was really busy you gave us such a warm and cosy time - and the food was fab too! Thanks xx

Stopped for a walk & lunch on way to catch ferry in Portsmouth. Friendly welcome & great service throughout. Sunny day so sat outside next to the pond, which had lots of birds, swans, ducks, red kite, to watch. Food was excellent- highly recommend the smoked trout starter & the pie of the day hit the spot. All good, fresh & reasonably priced. Well done.

First visit. Went for a family birthday meal. There was an 18th birthday party going on in the garden. The music was very loud inside the building and very booming, we asked for the bass to be turned down and the waitress said “ it’s a party we won’t be turning it down” The other family opposite us had a young child who was very disturbed by the noise and had his hands over his ears. We left as soon as we could and won’t be going back. The waitress was rude and dismissive.

Booked a table for 5 for a family birthday celebration. When we arrived there was a party going on the garden outside, I didn’t seem to be too noisy. As we sat down inside to eat, the music started up …so noisy that we were unable to hear each other unless we shouted. When the waitress served our meal we politely asked if it would be possible to turn down the bass level of the music as it was deeply uncomfortable booming inside the building. The waitress said “ it’s a birthday party and we won’t be turning it down “ I said we were also having a birthday party and would like to hear ourselves. She then said “ well we won’t be turning it down,” There was also a table with a couple and a child, the child was upset by the noise level and sat at the table with his hands over his ears. I have never had such bad service. To not even have our complaint acknowledged was totally unacceptable and the poor attitude continued from the staff continued throughout the evening as if we were at fault.

“No we don’t have a parking, we have a lake!” The counter says upon opening the door. That quite sums up the spirit in this old and honest pub. It’s in the middle of nowhere Alresford, since the 1200s, and so worthwhile.

My wife and I arrived at 6pm, having reserved online. We both had some Doombar to drink and a main each. Chicken, ham and mushroom pie with buttered cabbage and carrots was delicious. Pastry was superb and the filling tumbled out with lots of meat. Gravy was served seperately. I chose a side of fries with parmesan and truffle oil, which were good. My wife enjoyed the vegan falafel burger, which was moist and flavourful. A pint, 2 halves, 2 mains and a side of truffle fries came to around £60. I would visit again. Staff were very pleasant and in good weather the lakeside garden would be fabulous.

First of all, we only scored 4 for food as we only had one breakfast during our stay. We arrived very late on the Saturday evening due to plans not quite working out plus we had theatre tickets so we messaged the pub to let them know and ask if ok, and were assured this would be ok. On arrival we were expected and greeted warmly. One of the staff showed us to our room & made sure to show us the fire exits. She then explained breakfast would be to order only for the morning & we both chose a nice sounding full English. We were travelling with 2 dogs and despite our youngest being a bit "aggressive-sounding", they were also given a warm welcome. The room itself (en suite double, room 3) was a very good size with plenty of space for us all. The only thing was the lack of a wardrobe which didn't really bother us. A sturdy coat hanging hook on the door had several good hangers which can be used if needed. On Sunday, we had arranged to meet up with friends (they had 'baby sat' our dogs the previous evening) so didn't have time to eat at the pub, but the carvery looked fabulous. After returning in the evening, I went up to our room with our dogs but my hubby went back down to the bar for a drink. The next morning, he explained that he had stayed down for a few more than anticipated as he had been chatting to the owner, staff and other customers. We felt quite sad leaving as Mike (owner) and his staff looked after us so very well. In particular a big thank you to Lucia and Mia for their care and the general happy atmosphere during our stay. A note for the Lucia & Mia is that our dogs names are Kristoff and Kyra (just in case message got confused). We will see you all again. Thanks. Apart from that, we had the most restful 2 nights sleep we have had while away for a very long time. The bed was just tso comfortable.

Best Sunday roast I've had in a very long time. The staff were really friendly and accommodating when we walked in without a reservation and close to the end of service. Chef is clearly passionate about the quality of ingredients and therefore the standard of food his kitchen produces. Crispy potatoes, soft Yorkshire Puddings, delicious gravy. The beef was, apparently (others in our party had that), soft, tasty and cooked to perfection. The nut roast was very good. Would definitely drive the 1.5hrs from where I live for that meal again. Maybe when it's warmer, the sun is shining and we can take advantage of the garden by the water!

Service was friendly and attentive and we enjoyed the house speciality malt bread that we were given while we waited for our food. We only had light bites on this occasion - 3 of us had the Pumpkin Velouté which was delicious. The parmesan and truffle fries were very tasty too! The main meal choices were very varied and looked great. It was lovely to have full table service in a pub and also fabric napkins rather than paper. A cute pub that is part of the local community. It does have a charm of being very open and welcoming. There isn't enough seating inside if you have a four legged friend as they are not allowed in the restaurant area, understandable of course.

We stayed with another couple for 2 nights B&B plus one dinner. The hotel couldn't be better placed in Winchester but both the car park and the dining room are far too small for the number of guests. One of us had to wait for about 40 mins for a car park space (for which they charge £15 per night) and we had to wait for over 30 mins each morning for a table at breakfast. The hotel was busy but they should operate booked timings for breakfast rather than making guests wait for tables when they cannot accommodate the numbers. The food was very good but at dinner two of us were served our main courses about 10 mins before the others. I paid for the wine separately but when the bill was presented a service charge had been added which I asked to be deleted which it was.
